  • I'm down on Hyndford Street off the Beersbridge Road, East Belfast, boyhood home of music legend Van Morrison, ( 'Van the Man' ).
    Funny enough Van's home is only a stone's throw or a few streets away from legendary footballer Danny Blanchflower! I wonder did they know each other as young lads?
    George Ivan "Van" Morrison, OBE (born 31 August 1945) is a Northern Irish singer- prolific songwriter and musician. He can play a variety of instruments including guitar, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone!
    Van rose to prominence in the mid-1960s as the lead singer of the Northern Irish R&B band Them, with whom he recorded the classic "Gloria".
    His solo career began under with the release of the hit single "Brown Eyed Girl" in 1967. He has never looked back. He does however return frequently to Belfast to play and often stays with his family at the Stormont Hotel.
    Hard to pin down much of Van's music but on different occasions/outings it could be described as R&B/Soul/Spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition/Gospel/Jazz/Rock and Roll/Folk and more!
    Van Morrison from wee Belfast is widely considered by many rock historians to be one of the most unusual and influential vocalists in the history of rock and roll!
    My particular favourites include Brown Eyed Girl, Orangefield, Cyprus Avenue, Coney Island, Bright side of the Road, Cleaning Windows, and of course his rendition of the Star of the Co Down.

      Yes Van Morrison has done well for himself all around the world and he has brought positive attention to Belfast too. Hundreds if not thousands come here every year to check out the city and East Belfast out because of him and his many local song refernces. Best wishes.

      Hi Marlene. Thanks for that. Van Morrison has an amazing catalogue of songs to his name and through them has touched millions. I'm afraid I have never been to any of his concerts. -Very expensive. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills of Northern Ireland.

      Many of my street art/wall mural videos have Van Morrison in them. ( We are big on street art here in Belfast )

      I have videoed many of the places mentioned in VMs song eg in round places mentioned in Coney Island and Orangefield but I haven't mentioned the VM connection.
      I hope some of this helpes. You are obviously a big fan. Van as you might know is a very private person and doesn't give a lot away about himself or do many interviews.
      Best wishes again

    Tom has best channel on Belfast on RUclips. Great fella. You quite often see Van in Belmont for his coffee. Famously rude and grumpy man, never ever say hello to him. With talent like his he can do what he wants.

      Hey Nicky, many thanks for your kind words. I'm just an 'ole eejit having a bit of fun with RUclips.
      I've seen Van scurrying in and out of that coffee shop, trying to avoid being seen. I would love to chew the fat with him but it's not going to happen. I wouldn't go near him. He just wants to be left alone. So be it. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

    Good morning Tom. Just came across your video by chance and very glad i did. Been to Belfast 3 times since 2016. Was supposed to go again last march, and you know how that turned out. Have made some close friends there. Matter of fact just asked my friend to take me to hynsford street last week on my next trip over. Be well

      @@TomMcClean Oh I om I know what a raven is. We have plenty of crows around here. I got interested in Ravens and owls of late. I have just the friend. She visits Scrabo tower quite frequently. She even gave me a small portrait of it that's in my locker in work.Took her around my neighborhood yesterday as a matter of fact on facetime

      Sadly we have very few owls left in Northern Ireland. The most common are long eared owls. All others including barn owls are very scarce. Scrabo is a very place to go.

    Tom thanks for showing this video, wonder are there many old streets left in Belfast that aren't modernised,what about Alex Higgins house.

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  6 лет назад +1

      Yes there are a lot of the older streets still left but it can be really difficult finding out where the supposedly less important people lived. I have been trying for ages to find the actual number of Gary Moore's old house off the Upper N'Ards road. Eric Magee ( still alive and playing ) also from Thin Lizzy lived near Euston street. He now lives in Carrowdore. If you are not deemed suitable for a blue plaque award people will not know where you lived. And the people who pick the blue plaque recipients are all upper middle class types.
      I found Danny Blanchflower, James Young and Ottelie Patterson's houses by accident. They are still there. I don't know where Alex higgins lived. Sorry.

    Looks like Baltimore. Except its clean.

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  7 лет назад +1

      I am very surprised at you saying this Ed9870
      I'm surprised that Baltimore streets would look anything like Belfast. i thought they would be much more opulent. Having said that Baltimore was a major port of entry for many immigrants from Ireland so maybe some of the people from here built their homes of a similar size and shape to the ones they had left back home in Ireland?
      Thanks for dropping by with that comment.

    • @Ed9870
      @Ed9870 7 лет назад

      Opulent? No Baltimore is a gritty port which has seen far better days. Graffiti- blighted row-houses are a permanent feature of its backstreets, many of which are either vacant or give cover to the drug squatters. I commend the HBO series "The Wire" if you have time. The lead actor, Dominic West, hailed from the Midlands of the UK. He found Charm City to resemble the innards of Sheffield. Opulent applies to Manhattan or DC's tonier precincts while Baltimore occupies Cleveland territory is terms of urban decay.

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  7 лет назад

      Hey Ed9870, We were led to believe that all things American was great and good. Just like we were also told centuries ago that the streets of London were paved with gold! Well of course this is a 'slight' exaggeration but the idea or perception was that far away fields were a lot better or greener than home turf. Then when someone actually arrived to work etc the reality was quite a shock.
      Hey thanks for getting back to me and thank you for your honesty about Baltimore. Truth be told we all have places like this near by. And I'm not pointing the finger of blame at anyone because if I had been born into an environment like that I too might have fallen victim to drugs or gangs etc I used to watch a lot of TV years ago but now I find it so depressing to see people struggling with all sorts in life through no fault of their own. I know I'm burying my head a bit but............ I still read the papers. I tend to look for the uplifting positive stories because bad news sells. There are still so many good folk out there fighting to get through each day.
      Best wishes

    • @Ed9870

      Thank you Tom. Much of America is certainly great and good, as I'm sure is Ulster. Coincidentally, my daughter is visiting the UK this autumn with her college friends and the tour includes a visit to Belfast, which would've been out of the question in my college days as the Troubles were in full cry at that time. She also will see Dublin, Edinburgh, London, Holyhead and Galway. I am envious, to say the least. But she has my English and Irish roots, so she chose this adventure over some other European destinations. I expect if I ever do make it to Belfast, Van Morrison's birthplace would be on my list and I am going to suggest to her as well. Cheers.

I've videoed places all over the city places and buildings. Anyway... good talking to you. I hope your daughter has a great time. Tell her to do the Belfast open top, hop on hop off, bus tour especially if she is pushed for time. Best wishes
