Kantorei's final recording session - Warming down the low notes for this final session in this nice room before the recording. Working on vocal subharmonics and modal transition starting on G3 down to G1.
Being careful with the transition (singing vowel to vowel, bright, and releasing into subharmonics) will allow for it to be smooth and will carry a full sound.
You can use headphones or a nice subwoofer if you are all about that bass. :D
A is the fundamental frequency of the room. Pay close attention to when he hits A2 and A1, it's much fuller in sound and it resonates through my headphones.
Correct! Room resonances play such a huge part - even though the release of sound was on the G1, the A1 was fuller. Cell phone mics usually only go as low as 100Hz before it starts to roll-off the sound so harmonics become even more important.
@@bass2yang Yeah but it's a BIT like cheating, using the room in your advantage haha! I've done it many times, sat around and found the frequency of rooms with good acoustics. But if you're training for better resonance it doesn't help to sing in the room's fundamental, it basically hides your own resonance since the room boosts the note and not you.
Older video though huh? I was checking out your other, older vids after you shared the Wade In The Water Excerpt yesterday on my Facebook post. Is the setting in the video a temple or a cathedral of some sort?
@@GeorgeLifterMann the G3 to G1 video is a small chapel at a church the singing group I was in recorded at a few years ago. The wade in the water was recorded in my living room with quite a bit of distance away - no active room resonance there.
Yeah the rooms natural frequency maybe. He should have gone for A3 to A1 instead to tap into that extra ambience
When I play low notes on my keyboard, all the thing vibrates.
THHHIIIIIIIIICK.
Fun fact:
As we can hear in the video, the resinate frequency of the room is 110Hz [A2]. This means the width of the room here is roughly 1.55 meters or 5 feet.
Here's a formula: 341m/s [The speed of sound] :110Hz [An A2] : 2 [Because the sound goes to the wall and returns] = 1.55 meters:D
as someone who is studying sound at the moment, how do you know that the res frequency is 100Hz? can you tell through his voice?
@@jennaliv cuz an A2 got boosted as he sung it
@@rtsbass7829 Oh! that’s really neat.
@@jennaliv intereting, right?:D
Damn.
You can hear the transition to subharmonic register at C2, at about :14 mark
This might be one of the best things I’ve ever heard
Very nice transition. It doesn't sound at all like a different voice. The only way I could detect it is the very slight delay when you switched.
Most singers I've noticed tend to use leaps to disguise the transition. But you sound like you're playing the same 'instrument" the whole way down.
Wonderful technique
Oh, I thought it was all in subharmonics. Good voice. I can do subharmonics from C6 to G2 fundamentals, but I've hardly seen anyone use it on high ranges other than by mistake. I think it has its own charm once mastered.
Very true - many actually use it as a distortion effect above C4, especially since the normal fundamental naturally comes through better when it is that high.
For this example, the transition was at C2. I am usually comfortable blending up as high as A2 subs but I prefer the blend at D2/C#2/C2, depending on the vowel and color needs.
Thanks!
@@bass2yang Yes, it is quite used as a distortion, but most of them are breaking the note, as in raspy voice or fry scream, and in general not knowing that the distortion pursues a sub-harmonic. Two clean notes is rare. The aryepiglottic type of growl, common in belting, for example, is two notes but not relative, so it sounds more like distortion than polyphony.
Well, I was just looking for examples because I think it has some potential, but I can't find many examples of it.
Have you trained 2nd subharmonics? My goal is to master them for practical use. I'm a dramatic tenor so I don't have much choice for deep bass.
True - successfully producing a subharmonic that high vs actual use of subharmonics that high are not really in any demand - about as valid as using falsetto into the lower 3rd or even 2nd octave.
I work with 2nd and 3rd (Sometimes 4th) subs for training only to get me used to how it feels. In terms of performance used I only use 1st subs. 2nd subs can be successful, though I have only found them successful in cadences (more specifically, V to I cadences due to the nature of the 2nd sub), and not always singing with words or phrases.
@@bass2yang Yeah, that cadence is the most practical use yet. Well. Successes.
That was really smooth! Holy crap!
Bravo ! Amazing !
I hope you don't mind me using this in a video I'm creating! I'm giving you credit.THIS IS INCREDIBLE, and I want to help you become known.
Very similar to the ending of one recording of 'Im Tiefen Keller' sung by Rebroff, except that's in F. And he sings all the way down.
Why do g3s sound so high for you? That confused me lol. But good job!
Ahh - hello first passagio, how I never truly knew thee. Haha - My voice has always disliked the Gb3-Bb3 area. I recall the days in middle school when my voice first changed - I think C3 was all I had. Like. Really. That was it. Good thing I was in Concert Band at that time. Haha.
Good job in hearing that break!
Bass2Yang lol thank you.
I think g3 is actually pretty high for all men, exept for tenors I guess. May not be true for you!
@@itschaos007 G3 is below middle C, so no, it's firmly in the range of all voice types, basso profundo included.
@@aarondimoff5180 I know that but middle C..even tho it is the middle C is pretty high...for me personally since I am a bass, G3 is, actually about where my head voice starts
WHAT!!! Shut the front door!!!
HOLY SHIT
The one dislike is a girl who couldn't do this
I know it's a joke, but for the girls out there y'all can do it too
@Tamás Gál you should watch David Larson's videos on this, I'm sure they will help.
@Tamás Gál not recently, no, sorry :/
Tamás Gál - the most recent video of subharmonics (back in April) I made is linked below if you haven't seen it already. Let me know if it helps or if you are looking for something else that I didn't cover.
Yes, David is a wonderful resource as well and I highly recommend him.

A man with the voice of a girl
Wow. How can i learn this one?
David Larson has a good video on it. I learned it by humming a note and then relaxing into a vocal fry and then you can hit those notes. Sing an octave above what you want to achieve.
Le Asher nice explanation. I usually see a huge complex paragraph trying to explain it but you nailed it.
Hella smooth💯
How do you get this much power? I’ve been practicing for a some months now and my are really quiet
It does take time to get it down so do not feel like you have to get it within a few months. I've been doing this for a little over 10 years and I still have to be mindful of how to approach it.
Be sure you are practicing proper breathing and work on different vowel sounds throughout your range. When you have it down solid, start on a G2 (assuming you are able to sing that since I don't know your voice) and slowly move to subharmonics without pressing down or forcing it. Thinking of it as a layer over your full voice instead of a register change will help as well. Best of luck!
Bass2Yang thank you very much! Hopefully one day I’ll sound as good as you!
Lol, there's a reason oktavists are usually older than 40yo
Oh my goodness
Nice!
When you started sing subharmonic? I was thinking about C2 or only G1, because you have smooth slide
C2 is right where it happens. Thanks!
Impressionante!
i can do this and im 16. For some reason all the voice genes of my family hit me. The tuners cant pick up what notes im doing. The last note it tells me befor breaking is D1
That's great! Keep singing and developing that voice! Thanks for watching!
with subs? if your using subs than thats nothing special
Upload a video
Which note do you shift to subharmonics?
Harry Thomas C2
Urueds Songs it’s C2. He only goes down to a G1 here so you might be thinking down an octave
C2 :)
Excellent!!!
I legit thought this was about the G1 BB gun and the G3 battle rifle until I saw "subharmonic" and the video profile
kool
I hit this note with subharmonics/growl mix, (as a 14yo girl,) but DEF not as loud
31/5000
Fantastic! Is not there more of that?
Can I learn this power ?
Great you started the end of the world.
Can you do G1 to G0
I've only ventured down in the 0 octave a few times but not sure I can manage a G0 consistently at this time. Haha. Thanks!
И я так хочу!
THE SEAMLESS TRANSITION??!?!??!?! bye i quit
Came
How did you do that
Vocal Subharmonics! Feel free to browse around my channel and website to learn more about it. Plus, there are more resources about it on RUclips. Thanks!
How do you sing subharmonics?
Go watch vids on yt. I'm teaching it to myself tbh. But if you are a tenor I wouldn't try. You would hurt your vocal cords
I'm a bass/baritone, but i don't quite understand how to switch from fry/growl to subharmonics
This video made me mad (in a good way) I wanna fucking learn this technique SO bad
Hello I'm a big fan of your videos! I have a question for you? how hard is it to learn subharmonics? because the lowest I can hit in chest voice is a B1 and the rest I have to do fire breathing for.
+Thou “bass2yang” Yang so like I can hit a C2 and a B1 what do you recommend I do to train my voice?
+Thou “bass2yang” Yang thank you so much! I will try that!! :)
