Its not really underrated, it's a very popular series with a pretty big and dedicated fanbase. It mighn't be fallouts level of popular but its not even that far off it tbh

I like state of decay. The game is perfectly. The game perfectly conveys the atmosphere of a dangerous and contagious world. Your base is the only safe place at any stage of the game, and even then not always.

I saw someone recommended it but Shin Megami Tensei, i know it looks like a weird anime game just me it goes way beyond it's artstyle.
The first 2 games are old school dungeon crawlers all in 1st person however they both require fan translations to play in english, SMT 1 is on SNES,GBA and PS1 for english and like a lot of others if you can speak Japanese, SMT 2 only has an English translation for the SNES version
They retro cyberpunk post apocalyptic games where demons have invaded and you use computers to recruit these demons to your side with the ability to fuse them together to create stronger ones
SMT 3 nocturne is the most popular and the most different, instead of having a more cyberpunk type vibe its much more occult with rituals and an eerie atmosphere, you play as a half human half demon who needs to try and survive a brutal apocalyptic world after seeing the world end around him, the original is on PlayStation 2 but there's an HD remaster for ps4, steam and switch (don't get the switch version if you have the choice though)
Shin Megami Tensei 4 is a return to the cyberpunk setting but much more modernised, it's on 3ds exclusively
Shin Megami Tensei 4 Apocalypse is a sequel to the original SMT IV and it's very divisive, on one hand is has some of the best combat in the series but it has arguably the worst story because it's very tropey.
Shin Megami Tensei V (although I'll be talking about its expanded port SMT V Vengeance because its objectively the better game) has to be the most fun ive ever had with an rpg, the demon collection and customisation is perfect every option has some usefulness, they exploration is really fun, you get 4 semi open areas to explore littered with stuff to collect, sidequests, optional bosses and small platforming segments, the story in the "canon of vengeance" storyline is really good and much much better than the barely finished story of the original version, its on every modern console and steam.
And while its not one of the main 6 games I think this audience might enjoy SMT Strange Journey, it ditches the Japanese setting for one set in a black hole that opened up in Antarctica that you have to traverse through, its on DS and 3ds however the 3ds version is kind of meh, its a first person dungeon crawler like 1 and 2 but feels a lot smoother, you play as a soldier investigating the black hole when you're pulled in and anything other than that is spoilers.
I'm also gonna touch on the combat and the alignment system
The combat is SMT 1 and 2 is pretty standard jrpg combat with the exception of the whole demon summoning bit, but starting in SMT 3 they introduce the "press turn" system, it's fairly simple
You start with 1 turn icon for every party member you have in your active stock (up to 4)
Using any action except passing uses up one turn icon and when you have none it's the enemies turn
However of you strike an enemy with its weakness or get a critical hit the turn icon that would have been used starts flashing, it does go to the next party member's action but without using up the previous members turn fully, consider the flashing icons a half turn, you can perform any action on that turn but if you pass or strike a weakness/crit again it gets used up.
Passing turns the current turn into a flashing icon but passing again uses up the first available blinking turn z except in SMT V where it turns any available full turn into a half turn.
Now if you miss an attack or the enemy nullifies your attack you lose 2 icons and if you hit into a reflect or drain you lose ALL your turn icons immediately switching to the enemies turn.
Now everything here except passing applies to BOTH sides anything you can do to the enemy they can do to you and trust me they will.
Strange Journey is the outlier and uses a more simple system called demon co-op, if you strike a weakness any demon in your party of the same alignment as the member who struck the weakness will join for a combo attack that adds extra damage.
Now for alignment, these are in most games just a normal law, neutral and chaos
Law follows yhvh the Christian God to make a world of order
Chaos follows Lucifer and to make a world of complete freedom
Neutral follows neither and wants to make a world for humans, you are free to support any side with no consequences except in SMT IV apocalypse because its weird
SMT 3 has its own system called reasons so instead of law, neutral chaos you have Competition, Solitude, Harmony, "freedom" (turning the world back to the way it was before the apocalypse) and destruction.
I know this comment was so long it may as well have been a video in of itself but i hope it piqued someone's interest in this series.

Great list, but when it comes to Post Apocalyptic survival, I think you ought to mention games like Rust and Day Z. I know they arent your run of the mill RPG but in Rust and Day Z you make your own adventure, find allies and enemies alike while scavanging for resources. They aren't underrated in anyway of course, but you might find your next game obsession in one of those games.

Funnily enough I thought the other 2 were more underrated, being completely honest though absolutely nothing on this list is underrated. I was really expecting to be hearing something realy niche but they're all games I already have on my steam library (I don't even have much games) that just about anyone who is into gaming would know about.
