  • I've had the good fortune of working on two Zenith Trans-Oceanic Royal 3000 sets, but never on this more advanced model. The Trans-Oceanic D7000Y is one of the last really great world receivers made by Zenith, and is a true collectors' item. If you don't believe me, look at the prices they're fetching. Quite amazing.
    This one has been in the hands of a previous tech, who did not manage to fix it. It comes to me completely silent, which is good for some people, but definitely not for a radio.
    I've looked forward to this project for some time, and now need to do it justice. Wish me luck.

    I picked up one of these the other day in near mint condition. It worked on all bands and thought maybe just leave it alone. Watching your video thought what the heck it looks pretty easy. Pulled it apart and it was good thing I did. The 500uf cap in the power supply was leaking. Order the needed caps and they came today. It's now done and even changed the very small 1uf cap that's there with the power supply caps. What a difference it made. Pulling in more station with greater volume and clarity across all bands. Thanks for the great video.

    That is the most beautiful 7000 I have ever seen. I have been searching for one of those in nice condition for years. At least, one I can afford. They do bring a premium.
    I use to have a very clean 3000 but it was stolen. In fact, it was a manager at the company I worked for. He said he was interested in shortwave radio and asked if he could borrow it for the weekend. Well, he never returned to work and no one ever heard from him again.

    I do like your "Radial to Axial" capacitor conversion method. I will probably do something like that in some equipment I am working on as well. Those capacitors you removed, or at least one of them, may have had leakage, or "parallel resistance" higher than they should have, dragging down the whole power supply once you raised the voltage. The Zenith Royal series of radios don't looked as stylish as most of the Euro made offerings, but still have a class to themselves as far as design and performance. Nice work and enjoyable video, thank you for sharing your work with us!

    Good that you tried it before changing the capacitors Manuel and we can see what symptoms it displayed, that's learning. I'll be watching to see what the other issues are 🙂

    Hello Mr. Caldeira! As you probably heard, BBC has decided to open up some shortwave broadcasts for Ukranians! I am wondering if you could do a short video explaining how to tune in to those. According to BBC: “The BBC says its shortwave broadcasts will be available on frequencies of 15735 kHz from 4PM to 6PM and 5875 kHz from 10PM to midnight, Ukraine time.”. I have an old radio set with MW, LW, KWI and KWII and I’m unsure how to tune it! Maybe this can be helpful for others as well! Thank you!

    I always enjoy your video's and learn from them. I am especially enjoying this series since I bought this model set while in Viet Nam over 50 years ago and had it shipped home. I believe it was at least a month's pay if not more. I still own the set and had a similar experience where performance dropped off significantly but was restored when I replaced those same three capacitors. I'm sure you may be aware of this but regarding the reception issues on the shortwave and BC band there is a manual RF gain control, second knob from the top on the left, try rotating that knob counter clock wise until you hear a click (much like the on off switch on a volume control )that will put the RF in the "normal mode" ad may improve performance.

      Sounds like that radio of yours has some history. They were not cheap, and were made to last.
      Yes, I’m aware of the RF gain switch. It can be sneaky 😊

      Mine was confiscated when I landed in pulau KuKu, Anambas in 1983.
      Dead-reckoning by day with C-2300 Cessna magnetic compass and LW RDF by night, a kind of makeshift navigation to escape out of VN by boat.
      I tuned in to Pulau Matak MK ndb 329kHz (a beacon - - -.- in morse for MK) and rotated my Z-7000 for null detection.

    With those three 12 volt rated caps then one has to assume they were breaking down at or just before 12 volts was applied to them, Emanuel.

    Not sure if it is just me not remembering right, but some of the transistors don't look like the originals. The package types look different.
    Then again, I could be remembering it wrongly :)
    I do love these old Zenith radios. If they work, or once repaired, they just work and usually are really sensitive sets.

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew  2 года назад +1

      This is odd, actually. I also thought they used the 4-pin types with one of the legs being the shield, but in fact most of the sockets are only 3-pin types. This is the D7000Y model, so there may be differences. Not sure. I do know that all transistors ages silicon, and not germanium like the 3000.

    I have one of these but it is in wonderful working condition (even the tuning mater works) but in horrible cosmetic condition covered in mold, rust, and dust and the chrome is coming off the metal but I think that after some cleaning, cosmetic work, and TLC it will be as good as new again!

    Well, those who say not to change electrolytics probably doesn't have that much experiense with them.
    Try putting some DC on those old caps and see what happens.
    Start with 9 volts and increase up to 12 volts.
    Use a milliamp meter to check the current draw. Bet you'll see something there as voltage rises.

  • @greengrayradio1394
    @greengrayradio1394 2 года назад

    Nice progress, Manuel! Strange that the 3 'lytics which tested good for value, leakage and ESR should affect the radio so much. I stopped and looked at the schematic, still I don't see quite why.. But, electrolytics can fail in so many ways without "giving away their faults".. Bit strange they used point-to point construction that late, the caps were marked 1974 iirc. Good luck!

    I can tell now that this is going to be an interesting video series! Have enjoyed it a lot already!
    Food for thought: I have noticed that leaky capacitors typically have a capacitance value higher than the rated value.
    You mentioned that all the transistors are mounted in sockets. Are the recepticals of the sockets gold plated? Are the leads of the transistors gold plated? I ask because an engineer I once worked with had a circuit that just wouldn't work...it was discovered that the issue was because of a "dissimilar metals" reaction between the standard pins of the integrated circuits he was using and the gold plated contacts of the IC sockets in his design. While we are on the subject, would you please show some closeup shots of the sockets and the transistors plugged into them? Also, do you have a link to a schematic of this set?

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew  2 года назад

      The transistor sockets will need cleaning, obviously. Not sure about the type of metal. The service manuel was found by simply searching on google. I think this one was on Elektrotanya.

    Manuel You proven yourself to be a German radio aficionado, but now I start to think you're leaning toward Sweet home Chicago and Zenith manufacturing company. Your friends radio has had little or no use as the first thing that happens is when you start using the main tuning knob your fingers scuff the brushed aluminum. I notice when you remove the back plastic cover I saw the export models 120/240 transformer there should be a slight switch to select the correct voltage. As there is an earphone jack on front of the radio I'm curious what the 1/8" jack on the back is for 12 VDC battery? FO? I like the idea that when you remove the power cord from the back of the set it switches to the internal batteries. This one's got me excited too.

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew  2 года назад

      I’m definitely opening up to other radio brands. Essentially I just love a challenge. This radio does have that power selector and I will be going into that soon as well.

    • @nimbusco8956
      @nimbusco8956 2 года назад

      The jack on the back is the output from the tuner, which can then be run into an external amp.

    Hi,
    I have an export model as it's indicated on the inside of the battery cover to refer to the user manual for instructions on how to switch the voltage using an internal switch for 120/230v operation...but I don't have the user manual and it's nowhere to be found on internet. The service manual is easy to find but doesn't provide those instructions.
    Thanks in advance for any help! 🙂

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew  Год назад

      I’m quite surprised. I searched all my usual haunts and cannot find it. It’s strange - normally you can easily find the user manual but not the service manual. In this case it’s the opposite. Sorry.

    Those caps in the front aren't original. I have one open right now that hasn't been touched before and not one of the those original looks like what's in yours. I doubt Zenith ever used nichicon capacitors in their TO's. Your video is great and has had to have helped many people and I'm one of those.
