An English tourist on Douglas beach was once collecting crabs in a bucket. He went to get an ice cream and asked a nearby man to make sure the crabs didn't escape.
The man says "Don't worry fella, they're Manx crabs. If one tries to get out the rest will drag him back in".
😂😂😂😂😂
The best saying the Manx have about someone whom is not happy about the Island : " There is a boat in the morning! "
this may highlight the lack of progression on the island and ability to praise poor service in the hospitality and retail sector if they are a local company and failure to recognise the people that come over pump a lot in to the community as oppose to the 'manxies' who can't wait to get off the island and pump their money in to liverpool, cheshire oaks or primark.

I think I would agree if the maker of the video was always being negative about the Island; I’d even buy him the ticket. However, the video was compiled by someone who is generally very positive about the Island and in my view very balanced in his criticism. Maybe something else is at work here - folk’s unwillingness to listen to other or different views than their own. A sure recipe for decline and isolation of any culture or country.
I have a job interview this Friday and I have watched so many of your videos! Very helpful and looking forward to getting to have a look! Thank you
Good luck and thank you :)
Thank you for all the effort you put into these videos, you have really made it a lot easier to understand everything about living on the island.
We visited for the first time this Spring and are coming back in another couple of months. We loved it, particularly the north of the island. People were really friendly, great whippy ice cream at Laxey, shit shopping (who needs it), extraordinary skies, room to breathe, and a unique culture.
So enjoyed your video very informative.
Best wishes Delia 🇬🇧
Thank you so much for this video! It's quite useful.
Great videos Frank, thanks 🙏
I’d be keen to hear about local produce, like farmer’s markets (beef, dairy etc).
I m Puerto Rican I visited the isle of Mann 2008 I experienced nothing but love from the Manx community everyone was super nice they made me feel welcomed
Totally agree.
I’m Puerto Rican too, I live in Sunset park , Brooklyn. I’m dying to go and visit the people!
What did you expect? Why would it be any different
Are you light or dark skin? Im wondering because im dark skinned
Im black and wanna move there but im scared it may turn bad😢@@kazi20011
Frank, I can remember back in the '90's when I first started coming over to the Island with my parents that the local papers would also publish divorce details complete with names, ages, grounds for marital breakdown, etc. It made for eye opening reading on the ferry rides! So some "progress" has been made and I have noticed a slightly more tolerant attitude prevailing in the last twenty years.
I think you have presented a fairly balanced viewpoint but mainly from a Douglas based perspective. Try living in one of the smaller villages in the North of the Island. There is virtually nothing up there in the way of amenities but there is some spectacular scenery. You also forgot to mention the Co Op and the Spar which are around the Island and help to make food shopping a bit easier in the smaller places. I appreciate your continued championing of the IoM as a place to live despite the inherent drawbacks that come with Island life .
Thankyou. Brilliant video.
Great informative video, thank you.
really enjoyed watching this, many thanks
Thank You Frank , very informative video, especially for those who intend to come to IOM for the first time.
Really informative. Good watch for people thinking of moving over. Cheers mate
Thanks again. Your previous video about the benefits of the IoM was excellent, but I knew there were downsides due to its size. Three nights in Douglas this time last year and we were bored. However, given the drawbacks, do you think it's a suitable island for retirement? Surely it dosen't suffer the same level of social problems of its two bigger neighbouring islands?
On a visit to the island in August I went for a quiet drive. On the way I met oncoming motorbike after motorbike riding at crazy speeds in abject contempt of the speed limit. What on Earth was going on? However loads of people were waving their hands at me which made me feel welcome.
A great video, very useful info…..
Very informative video, explainations are really good
Thank you.
An honest video stating the facts as known, love the way most of the backstabbers are not brave enough to put a real name to their posts but that is the way of cowards. I visited for a couple of weeks with the view to do some research into moving there when I retire, so far it looks like it will happen and some of the credit has to go to your videos look forward to meeting you one day, cheers.
Great video. Ty
Thank you for this balanced video. As a longtime Manx resident I think it’s a shame that others criticise.
I found the video objective and fair.
In my opinion when I read some comments from other locals say “There’s a boat in the morning” it’s downright uncalled for insult and used to shut down conversation. I would prefer some of our Manx nationals to self reflect before insulting. The island is competing for good people to relocate here for work.
We need more advocates for the Island like you Frank. Thank you 🙏 30:05 👍👌
As an ex-worker in the health service I left when they ended the reciprocal agreement with the UK NHS pensions. I have been back as a locum and could see the decline in health service provision and the issues they where having in recruiting high quality staff and could see the decline in quality care, it was getting as bad as the worst places in the UK. Management was also becoming more aggressive and bullying in there attitude towards staff, again like the worst places in the UK... A pity because it used to be such a great high quality service that was a pleasure to work in, but not the last time I worked there.

Thank you, very informative. Are there farms or smallholdings for sale on the Isle of Man?
There are some great old traditional pubs on the island serving great beers from local breweries. 🍺🌝👍
Unfortunately the numbers keep dropping. The pandemic took a lot.

Thank you Frank, for a very honest and balanced report on IOM. Your video is so much better than the “Everything is Rosy” kind; that kind always seems to lead to disappointment when things are not as perfect as they appeared.
The IOM always seemed to me to be a stricter jurisdiction than the UK with respect to law and order including handing down longer tariffs. As for your comments about printing the names and addresses of law breakers in the local press, where I live in Northamptonshire the local paper print the full names of convicted offenders and the street names where they live, but not the house numbers. I don’t have a problem with it.
That’s the same here on the Isle of Man actually, I don’t think he meant to say the full the house number, just the street name.
They do have a habit of announcing job titles and employers though
yes of convicted offenders. On the island they'll print your name even if you're just suspected of the crime
There are 14 bobbies and there is a prison. Maon issue on the island is drugs.
I completely agree with your very sensible comment about this, the IOM deals with criminality much better with lawbreakers. The IOM is a great place to live, you can look up all the necessary details of what you want to know about before wanting to come to the Island, whether it is to move here or enjoy a holiday...end of story.
I hadn’t even been on the island 24 hours last Thursday on my first visit from across and I ended up in your A&E😂 needing stitches on my wrist. I was in an out in three hours not too bad. Had to fill in some form because I wasn’t from there. Good job I’m left handed in the injury was on my right 😅
Thank you for your balanced view; I'm currently considering relocating my business to the Isle of Man and buying a property there! :)
I moved from the island in 79 that was down to parents hope to come back in next few yrs .. Question can the Isle of Man still hang people or has that stopped too
Frank, why is it so hard to hire a car on the IOM? Not during busy season, during off season -- some are sold out, some can't confirm, and some want a massive deposit.
Thank you for your videos. I've lived in California all my life and I've always loved it until recently. I'm fine with earthquakes but I've had enough of heat waves, fires, shootings, rattle snakes, mountain lions, coyotes, etc. and a cold, rainy and windy island sounds wonderful. I depend on your videos (except the TT ones) to educate me on the island since I've never been. I go to London every February and thought I'd make a short trip to fly to the IOM to take a look at the place, though now I see that February isn't the best time because of the weather.
im also from california and when i visited the isle i didnt want to leave because it was so much better
Frank, old friend, privacy and anonymity are close neighbours. Anonymity is, IMO, at the root of much of the anti-social behaviour we see in larger populations such as in UK cities. The relative lack of anonymity in the IoM is one of its most positive attributes because it encourages a more responsible, respectful and accountable community.
To my way of thinking the biggest weakness of the IoM is the unaccountability of government :- senior Civil Servants decide policy, decide what they think is best for the IoM, and then hide behind politicians so that the authors of policy are hidden, anonymous, and unaccountable. Ultimately this stifles public debate, public engagement in policy. Decisions by anonymous senior Civil Servants affect what the island will be like as a place to live, and if they change direction (as they have previously) then the social climate can change dramatically (as it has) without public debate and scrutiny and those changes may not suit everyone. Some recent changes and policy directions didn't suit me, which is why I caught a boat in the morning after 15 years of investing myself into the island. My 2d. Leaving was the best option for me, but I deeply resent that it was necessary.
You are definitely from UK.
I'm not from the IoM or live there - "If you do something wrong everybody knows about it".
What's wrong with that? maybe it makes people think twice. The crime figures on the IoM speak for themselves, it's extremely safe.
There is a saying on the Island; there's a boat in the morning. In other words if you don't like it, leave.
Well said.
What if someone was actually innocent, still have their name out there.
It's good crime is lower than the mainlands.

I made loads of those
4:05, I can't see any FULL address on that newspaper page, a FULL address to be regarded as such should also have the house number and the postcode. And BTW, I'm a non-Brit residing on mainland UK and I've seen this on the newspapers over here as well, so I don't really think it's peculiar to the IOM.
Audio is low. Listening on laptop and can hardly hear you.
Thanks for the info ... Is the government stable financially.. do taxes change and rise often ?
Were on better tax systems than England, can earn more before getting taxed on it. And capped at 20% no matter how much you earn when over £21k
@@kimberleynowell8737 isn't there a flat tax cap too like Guernsey and jersey?
@@TkSebastian from what I got told when I rang the income tax division, you get 14500 allowance tax free then its 10% tax on anything over upto £21k and then you go to the 20% on anything over 21k.
Every adult earns £14500 before paying any tax. If only one partner in a couple is working then the other spouse's allowance is added to it, which means a couple can earn £29,000 before paying tax. It's 10% on anything above that up to a certain amount (quite high and I don't know what it is). Mind you the cost of living here is high so it's great that the tax is relatively low.
@@TkSebastian Yes, if you are fortunate enough to be in that position, then you can elect for a tax cap over a 5 or 10 year period at £200k max income tax liability or £400k per couple.

it's all very well saying there's a boat in the morning every time. but there are things wrong here that we locals are often too close to see. so perhaps we should think about what he says. after all we do complain about things a lot here ourselves. Frank, my wife and I are looking to relocate to IOM and we have been viewing may of your videos. My only concern is the housing and diversity. Most apartments prohibit smoking, NO CHILDREN, and NO PETS! We don't smoke, but what is about children and pets. I spoke to a few realtors on IOM and they all say the this is NOT a pet friendly Island (community). Is that true? I know this may be other (realtors) opinions, but these are very important decisions people have to make and being unwelcome communities is important. I appreciate your insight.
Why would you want to move there? Is it because your people already turned most of Western Europe to 💩💩💩💩. Why does it have to be the Isle of Man? Go to Bermuda or Seychelles
I am a local resident for more than 20 years. I think we are a nation of animal lovers.
I believe the opinion we are “not a pet friendly island” has come from an estate agent and only refers to difficulty securing a rental that allows pets. It’s probably part of the rental market becoming more competitive (in favour of the vendor)- very sad if it stops people moving to the island in my opinion.
IOM not for you I think.
If you think that Britain isn't cold, windy or expensive enough, move to the Isle of Man!
Correct
And most landlords don't allow pets ... or children
which makes no sense to me. There are plenty of doggy day cares around the island (something I didn't know existed prior to moving to the IOM) which proves that the general public is pet friendly. But renting a place that allows pets is a mission impossible.
Well, that's their prerogative I suppose, they own the place , they call the shots.

Quite a balanced view I think. You forgot to mention the moaning however, there's a lot of people here who complain endlessly about the lack of this or the state of that yet as soon as someone tries to change the thing they are moaning about they throw their arms in the air and scream about hating change. The biggest hurdle to making some of the things you mention better is the "There's a boat in the morning" attitude of some but not all people.
I have had a Beef with Manx Forums! IMO: I was Unfairly Banned!

But actually the newspaper displayed indicated that the individual concerned had been tried, convicted and sentenced. This would be legitimate reporting anywhere. This contrasts with an earlier and decidedly abhorrent practice of reporting arrests and trial proceedings, displaying the names and addresses of those indicted who may well be later found not guilty.
On the subject of the airport you should ask why years back they could provide light aircraft parking on the grass for 50+ aircraft during TT yet this year they can only provide parking for five light aircraft ? This may be difficult for an airport management who’s understanding of aviation stops at the airline business but it is essential for the Islands economy that because each of these aircraft represents a living to the taxi drivers and restauranteurs on the island. The government spends a lot of money promoting the island as a tourist destination yet the airport ( a government department ) is hindering tourism by only providing 5 light aircraft parking slots. As yourself how difficult can it be to during the summer mow a bit of grass big enough for parking 20 or so light aircraft and then extent this area during TT & MGP? The island is a superb destination for the well healed aircraft owner to visit during the summer but the parking situation severely limits the numbers.
Comparing privacy laws in Germany and the Isle of Man, they are two extremes. Even Google Street view is blocked in most of Germany. But when it comes to the government information is hard to find in the IOM.
One thing I believe was not mentioned was road tax. For most cars this is more expensive on the island. With just 500 miles of roads, many of which are hardly fit for use.
Since your video it has been announced that the island is officially the safest place to live in the British Isles.
there is no road tax in the Isle of Mann or the UK, we pay VED on the Island which is a variable rate which is emissions based and not expensive.
@@georgebarnes8163 Whatever you call it is more expensive for most cars in the Isle of Man than it is in UK. It is called Vehicle Tax and is more expensive than UK rates for emission-based figures. More important it can only be paid in one go and is non refundable. While UK offers multiple payment options and is refunded if you take the vehicle off the road or sell it.
@@michaeltb1358 My car costs me £230 per year in VED in the UK, 2350 Euro in Ireland or £186 on the Isle of Man for Vehicle Duty, the Isle is the cheapest and can be paid every 6 months or yearly.

An interesting video.
Firstly, a person coming to live in the Isle of Man needs to be aware that they are a "A large fish in a small bowl".
The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency which means residents have a British Citizenship but are not part of the United Kingdom. Indeed, the Isle of Man Government dates back to 979AD.
I do not think that somebody who moves to another area to live should begin imposing their own customs and culture but should absorb everything and intergrate instead.
Finally, people who move to the Isle of Man and are dissatisfied should remember that "There is a boat in the morning!" as Interpid Traveller confirms.
the phrase "There is a boat in the morning!" is the most disrespectful thing a foreigner can hear apart from actual racist slurs. As if suggesting something to improve whatever it may be is a bad thing.

It bothers me when I hear about somebody trying to change a place they’ve recently moved to, especially when they assume their views are shared by those who have lived there for generations, or by those who have settled here precisely because of the way it is.
