Hey folks. I actually missed quite a lot of characters! Enjoy the video but take a look at some of the comments for PLENTY more.
And I totally forgot Shadow Mario was revealed to be Bowser Jr. My bad!
Just thought id let you know the egg their is called Bandit
😅 It's okay Johnny Vector!
You could absolutely make an update video. Mario Wonder's coming out so maybe it's almost time
A bit of a correction with Gooigi, he actually first appeared in the remake of the first Luigi’s Mansion game on the 3Ds as an option for a two player mode.
Oooh thank you!
mama? mama luigi?!
@@randomistough0*heartiest laugh you’ve ever heard*
And now we can add Chargin’ Chuck to the list!
Good point! He'll be joining the lineup soon
@@JohnnyVector And Ninji now.
There's a scary amount of Mario characters out there, but there's even more:
- Funnily enough you forgot about the original Donkey Kong (AKA Cranky Kong) who was playable in a few Game & Watch games such as Donkey Kong Circus and Donkey Kong Hockey.
- A ton of Wario Land 3 characters appeared as playable multiplayer characters in Dr. Mario 64 oddly enough.
- Chargin' Chuck (playability wise) debuted in Mario Kart Tour
- The Pixils from Super Paper Mario were skipped over although their range of "playability" is questionable.
- One of the Lumas was a playable character in Mario Tennis Open
- Captain Toad is an iconic character in the series, but whether he's the main Toad or his own character isn't clear.
- What is clear is that the other members of the Toad Brigade debuted as playable characters in the 3D World Switch port. This includes a Blue Toad with glasses, a Green Toad and a sleepy Yellow Toad.
- Speaking of Toads, do Blue and Yellow Toads from the New Super Mario Bros games count? Not sure myself honestly.
- This doesn't actually count, but a funny thing about the Fire Emblem character Elimine is that she first made her physical appearance not in Heroes (but she first became playable there) but in the Mario Kart Double Dash!! Bonus Disk. Yeah, I don't get it either but that means she's a Mario character I guess.
That's all I got, but I can't shake the feeling that there's even more Mario characters I missed.
About the Koopalings, they were designed first and their names were the ones inspired by famous music icons. The Nintendo America employee who came up with them looked at the designs and was reminded of some musicians names that fit. As for Larry though, he just looked like a Larry.
Haha, thanks for the extra info, very cool
That's not necessarily accurate, conflicting stories say he was named after Larry Mullen Jr.
@@orsonzedd He actually wasn't, that is a myth.
@@testaccount4830 we don't have any proof of that
A few characters that you missed are:
the Headless Snowman, who is playable in the Super Mario 64 DS minigame, Snowball Slalom
the Bob-omb Buddy, who is playable in the New Super Mario Bros. minigame, Danger, Bob-omb! Danger!
Tippi and Tiptron, who are technically playable in Super Paper Mario. By pointing the Wiimote at the screen, you can move them around
Professor Toad, who is playable in Paper Mario: The Origami King. When pressing down on the D-pad, Professor Toad will dig in the ground
Thanks for all of those
Also, Paper Mario is independent from regular Mario, due to both of them co-existing in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
@Amazing Andrew also I think that would mean Paper Bowser, Paper Peach, and Paper Luigi would be unique playable characters (at least I think Paper Luigi was playable)
OwO that's a lot of characters!
@@Quartzer. He was :p
You could consider Stanley, the exterminator in Donkey Kong 3, as a Mario character maybe?
Fair point! Thanks for the comment.
he is the mario brother's nephew according to the super show
@@RabbiB0Y where did you hear that from
@@chugiron4698 I assume the super show?
@@cjr4444 the Super show never even comes close to referencing Donkey Kong, let alone stanley
Some mistakes:
-The Mario Mario and Luigi Mario thing was just mentioned in the movie and it's not 100% official
-The Co-Star mode was already in the first Mario Galaxy
-Chain Chomp actually debuted in Mario Bros. 3
Thanks for those
Actually the Mario last name is official now. Miyamoto said it a few years ago.
@@JohnnyVector Chain Chomps debuted in Super Mario Bros 3.
Also gooigi is from Luigi’s mansion on the 3ds, both of you missed that
In Mario Superstar Baseball, Fire Bro and Boomerang Bro are both playable as well. While most characters just have regular alternate colorations for them, the Hammer Bro’s alts are specifically called Fire Bro and Hammer Bro in game.
Thanks!
Small correction, chain chomps first appeared in Super Mario Bros 3. Not Super Mario World.
Thanks, of course. D'oh
Loved this video! Was looking for a video like that and thought that did not exist, so thank youuu
Although you do technically control them as cappy, I feel like the enemies you can capture in odyssey should probably count in this list as you do play as them in theory
There are also the main playable characters from Mario Golf and Mario Tennis on the GameBoy Color.
Luigi was in a Game & Watch game before Mario Bros. Not a video game (debatable) but interesting fact.
Interesting, thanks!
Of course its a video game. What else would it be?
@@orsonzedd technically game and watches weren’t on a screen, just the lighting effects
@@masterkdude one, semantics, who most have been ported to Nintendo systems
Stanley the Bug Man, Rabbid Peach, Rabbid Luigi, Rabbid Mario, Rabbid Yoshi, and Rabbid Cranky Kong are missing. We can also now add Chargin Chuck
To be fair Donkey Kong 3 technically isn’t a Mario game and ima guess he didn’t count Mario and Rabbids games because there not canon
he didn’t count them because they are varients of the og characters but idk abt stanly
If you didn’t think there was enough humans, Mario Golf: Advance Tour brought in at least two more. The two were also playable in Toadstool Tour when linked.
Haha, thanks. Weird there were so many disposable human characters
@@JohnnyVector It was interesting to see a bunch of normal humans considering we typically only see like nine of them in this franchise
Maybe you could add Fire Bro, Boomerang Bro, and Ice Bro for their playable debuts in MK Tour. Also perhaps Foreman Spike?
Thanks for those additions
I believe Nabbit's first playable appearance was actually New Super Luigi U. and not Mario Golf World Tour
Same with Lakitu he's technically playable as the camera
You missed Kamek himself who made his playable debut in Mario Party 9! (Or that Yoshi Tetris Attack if you count that) He’s just called Magikoopa because of a translation error. And Kritter was first playable in Mario Strikers Charged. Stone spikes and Bone Goombas are also playable in Mario Sports superstars. Starlow is also briefly playable in Mario & Luigi Dream Team when the Bros and Dreambert go into the dream world because she activated The Luiginary works.
You forgot Bob Hoskins, who played AS Mario in the Mario Bros. Movie.
Sidenote, the Mario Bros. Movie went on to win 14 oscars and is considered to be the greatest movie of all time.
Ah yes, thanks! Mario Bros. Movie 14 Oscars > Sonic the Hedgehog Movie 0 Oscars
@@JohnnyVector The Sonic movies are like the Sonic games. 2 and 3 will be the better remembered. "Sonic the Hedgehog 3: The Movie and Knuckles" will go down in cinematic history. It will even replace the phrase "The Citizen Kane of games". People will say "This is the 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3: The Movie and Knuckles' of games".
Also did you forget ROB from Mario Kart DS? Or was I not paying attention..
@@novelezra HE SAID NO GUEST CHARACTERS SO ROB DOESNT COUNT

Characters you forgot (that I dont think anyone else mentioned though they probably did)
Spearhead, Webber, Silky, Appleby, Jellybob, October, Helio, Lump, Hammer Bot, Mad Scienstain, Rudy (Dr Mario 64)
Poochy (Poochy and Yoshi's Wooly World)
Shellcreeper (Super Mario Maker)
Also does Bowser Junior's Journey count cause if so
Private Goomba, Corparol Paraplunk, Seargant Guy, Buzzy Beetle, Spike Top, Para Beetle, Spiny, Mechakoopa, Broozer, Pokey, Ant Trooper, Bob Omb, Bully, Parabones, Para Bidybud, Bomb Boos, Swooper, Spear Guy, Ninji, Fire, Ice, and Boomerang Bros
And Bowser's Minion has Prince Peasly, and Starlow (Note:Once again these are only if they count and alot Jr's journey characters actually were in Bowser's Minion)
Also Info I got was from the mario wiki (besides the Poochy thing)
Also why does Shadow Mario count but not Baby Mario, Dry Bowser, etc.
Thanks for all of that. In all honesty I totally forgot Shadow Mario was actually Bowser Jr. in Mario Sunshine, my bad.
@@JohnnyVector oh yeah I went to see if I missed any and realized Captain Goomba, Koopa, Shy Guy, and Boo are technically different characters
I was looking to see if anyone mentioned the Dr. Mario 64 playable characters, good to see you remembered them.
@@JohnnyVector also I don't think you mentioned them but there's also
UndoDog and Foreman Spike in Mario Maker 1
And I think someone already mentioned the Rabbids in the first Mario+Rabbids so might as well mention the new ones from Sparks of Hope, Rabbid Rosalina, and Edge
Also do ? Block, and Trampoline count for Mario Maker 1 cause they are Mario original things made playable in Mario Maker 1
Edit:speaking of Mario Maker 1 costumes Ashley from Warioware is a costume and I know you said no Warioware but would she count since she's in a Mario game and she is from the Mario Universe (as she's from Warioware a Mario Spinoff)
@@supercamborg4218It’s funny to me how they’re just Wario Land 3 enemies
you missed the characters in the N64 DR Mario series i believe..in the multiplayer you could play as various animals
Good shout, thank you!
You missed Robot Mario from Mario Kart Arcade GP
1.I do feel mii could be added
2.blue toad and yellow toad are technically 2 different characters (also different than the regular toad, but I don’t know if this one got a playable role)
3.there’s no reason why captain toad shouldn’t be in here if toadette is listed (also his crew are now playable in Mario 3Dworld switch port for player 2-4 in game the captain toad minigame)
4.you’ve listed the Mario maker exclusive costume as playable character, so is there a reason why peachette doesn’t get that treatment?
Some good points. I guess sometimes it comes down to personal discretion but those are some great mentions.
@@JohnnyVector yeah, those were just my thoughts.
Would you count Tetris Attack as a Mario game? Because in that game you can play as multiple characters from the Yoshi Spin Offs thanks to the Multiplayer Mode, like Raphael the Raven
Awesome, thanks, that one definitely slipped my radar
I love your voice. It’s so soothing. Please never change anything about your videos, they are perfection!!
Thank you for the positive feedback. Much appreciated!
@@JohnnyVector No problem!
You forgot the Thief from Yoshi's Island, who is playable in the 2P minigame mode. I forget if it's in the original or Advance version.
Thanks. I just researched this and apparently it is in the SNES version. Wow, I never knew that game even had a 2P minigame mode!
@@JohnnyVector Yeah! I remember finding a cheat code to unlock it when I was in middle school and it stuck with me cuz the Thief is never really utilized for anything in modern Mario or Yoshi games anymore.
You forget about Starlow and Dreamy Luigi from Dream Team
Thanks!
Dreamy Luigi is just Luigi
Pray for dark bones from the baseball games😔
Correction to Mini Peach and Mini Toad, they were first playable 3 years before in Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini Land Mayhem for the DS in 2010.
Love videos like this but it's weird to count Shadow Mario when that's Bowser Jr in disguise but not the Paper versions of characters who are alternate universe versions of the cast.
Thanks. Yeah that was totally my bad. I completely forgot Shadow Mario is actually Bowser Jr.
Small correction, Rosalina is not a princess. She is not the monarch of a kingdom, nor is she ever referred to as a princess in canon.
Yes, I have had this admittedly pointless argument many times, and yes, I will die on this hill.
I loved those "Mario Vs Donkey kong" games, but i never beat it as there was this one level i couldnt get past, this was years ago.
Yeah the first one in particular was challenging but a lot of fun
There’s also umpteen generic human characters that were playable in NES Open Tournament Golf & the GBC versions of Mario Golf & Tennis as well as Foreman Spike who was playable in the Japan-only Wrecking Crew 98 as well as a couple EXTREMELY obscure characters who are exclusive to that game. Also Donkey Kong & Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, & Tiny Kong made their playable debut in Donkey Kong Country, DKC2, & Donkey Kong 64 respectively as well as Funky Kong. K. Rool, & Kritter making their playable debut in DK King Of Swing, I’m assuming you didn’t count those bc they aren’t Mario games proper, but saying their playable debuts were in Mario games proper is kinda misleading.
You seem to have forgotten the characters from Mario Golf Game Boy. Kid Sherry Joe Azalea tiny Grace putts and a gene
Oh there they are. Shut your British face the human characters are the best
You forgot Dry Bowser, Fire Bro, Ice Bro, Boomerang Bro, The basique Yellow Luma, Goomba Tower, spike and the Koopa Clown Car Jr.🙃
Thanks! Spike was in there but the others were missing.
@@JohnnyVector oh and also Perry from Super Princess Peach
And dark bones
I'd argue that Paper Mario should count as his own character, since he is separate from Mario in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.
Ya so Paper Mario, Paper Luigi, Paper Peach, and Paper Bowser should all be here
10:06 I can answer that, actually.
It's been retconned that Bowser Jr. is Bowser's only son. The Koopalings are assumed to be adopted, or unrelated.
As for Koopa Kid, he's been retconned out of existence as well. The mini games featuring him that were remade for The Top 100 and Super Stars replaced him with Bowser Jr.
I grossly overestimated the age of the Advance Tour game
Another great Video! Keep up the great work and stay blessed!
Thank you Rufio!
@@JohnnyVector My pleasure Man! Just finished the video...It was indeed great! I love listening to your stuff while I cook. I'm so happy to have found your channel!
in mario kart 64 you play as a bomb kart after you lose all your balloons
oh also if you use the gameboy adapter with mario tenis gbc in mario 64 you can unlock 4 more characters you probably dont care about, but I thought they were neat.
Thanks for all of these additions, very interesting
@@eishikibahamut all four characters were in the GBC version so do they count considering he talked about the human characters from the GBC and GBA games
I feel everyone does the golfers from the early golf games dirty when bringing them up. I just like a lot of their designs and they're probably cool characters for what they are, even if not the usual mushroom kingdom denizens
You forgot Birdo
Are you familiar with "Wrecking Crew '98"? Talk about obscure. If you consider that I think you can play as several characters in it, they might all be overlaps though.
Excellent shout! I've just had a look at this and there's some weird looking characters in there. Thanks
@@JohnnyVector These videos are fantastic by the way, big fan of all the videogame content on this channel.
If people find any you missed will you do an update video
For now I'm just keeping track of them in a pinned comment. I'll consider a quick update video though
Great video and is very informative! Small gripe tho at 7:50, the term is Transgender not Transexual. The suffix sexual means what one is attracted to, so by saying transexual, you're saying that person is only attracted to trans people not that they are trans.
Transexual is just very old terminology that's not really used anymore for a variety of reasons. It means the same thing.
Thank you, and thanks to Diana. I've added a little correction regarding the terminology in my pinned comment as you're right, I should've said transgender.
@@JohnnyVector Oh hey, thanks. I genuinely appreciate the effort to clear things up. I'm a pretty big fan of Birdo, and she's one of the first trans characters in gaming. It's a shame her chosen name, "Birdetta", seemingly isnt canon and is never used by Nintendo.
@@dianauwu1312 I would have loved it if she went by her Japanese name "Catherine", over here in the west.
Actually it’s not officially confirmed that Mario and Luigi last name is Mario (the mario movie isn’t canon)
Thanks. I did a little extra research on this bit. Seems like it's a bit of a grey area. Apparently Miyamoto said it once too, but it isn't widely accepted as canonical.
@@JohnnyVector when asked if Mario as a last name, he said he never gave him on but remember that in the American Mario movie they gave him "Mario" as a last name and exclaims he founded it funny.
That’s what I’ve gathered
Here’s a source for the article
www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/09/shigeru_miyamoto_mario_and_luigi_dont_have_last_names
Maybe i'm wrong but didn't you forgot Captain Toad?
Also not only is Donkey Kong jr. The modern Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong senior AKA Cranky Kong was playable in Donkey Kong hockey, Donkey Kong circus, and Donkey Kong 3 for the Game and Watch. Additionally Luigi's first playable appearances in the game version of Mario Brothers
16:44 Mini-Peach, DK, Toad and Pauline’s first appearance was minis on the move there first actually appearance was mini land mayhem
why dont the kremlings from strikers count? i know they're controlled by an ai but i still think they should get a shoutout or something
"Mario is of course playable in the vast majority, if not all of the games mentioned in this video"
I know you're technically not wrong, but you did immediately prove he's not playable in all of them by mentioned Donkey Kong Jr. 5 seconds later lol.
Also, not sure Shadow Mario counts. Isn't he just another form of Bowser Jr.?
There is definitely gonna be more, because Mario games use even regular enemies to be playable. In compared to Sonic
Corrections:
1. Since you counted Yoshi to have a playable debut in Super Mario World, Plessie should have also been counted, who appeared in Super Mario 3D World.
2. I'll allow Shadow Mario to count as a separate character, since in the Sonic Characters video you separately counted Metal Sonic in disguise. But the Lakitu that appears as the host is not the same as the playable Mario Kart character, indicated by the shell colours.
3. Piranha Plants, particularly the one in Smash Ultimate, are female. If you don't believe me, try the Palutena's guidance easter egg with Piranha Plant. They are referred to as "she".
4. All the Koopalings have a musical link except Larry.
5. Chain Chomps debuted in Super Mario Bros 3, not Super Mario World.
6. The Mario Maker ones shouldn't count, since canonically all of the Mystery Mushroom characters are still just Mario in a costume, hence why you turn back into Mario when you get hit.
7. There are some other RUclips commenters making corrections, let me list a few:
- Gooigi first appeared playable in Luigi's Mansion 3D
- Captain Toad, who is officially considered his own character, is separate from "regular Toad."
- You can play as the headless snowman in a Super Mario 64 DS minigame.
- You an also play as a Bob-omb in these minigames, though I question if that actually counts or not
- Nabbit was playable in New Super Luigi U first
- Stanley the bugman should also be here
Another character forgotten about was Stanley the bugman from DK3
rip the super paper mario pixles
Wouldn’t the captures from Super Mario Odyssey count as playable characters?
I thought Toad was the faster character in Doki Doki Panic/SMB2
Considering that partners in time had the normal bros and baby bros working Alongside each other, I'd personally say that they count as their own characters. Although i can totally understand why you wouldn't include them
Honestly they are the same characters so I see why they don't count.
But it's literally just time travel shenanigans they're the same person in different times
Just an FYI Goobas aren’t fungi. They’re chestnuts. Their Japanese name even translates to “chestnut people”
Would you consider baby Mario and baby Luigi their own unique characters. Pretty sure they debuted in Mario and Luigi partners in time.
I considered including them, but then realised there is a load of baby characters for Peach, DK, Wario and more! So I decided to count them as just variants of Mario, Luigi etc
Why wouldn't they have debuted in Super Mario World 2?
@@orsonzedd oh yeah haha I totally spaced that
@@orsonzedd Baby Mario would have but Baby Luigi (correct me if I'm wrong) debuted as a playable character in Mario Kart Double Dash, Baby Peach became playable in Yoshi's Island DS, same with the babies who debuted in that game, Baby Daisy and Rosalina debuted in MKWii and MK8 respectively, and Baby Yoshi could either be SMW or NSMBU
@@Quartzer. I don't know that we were talking about when they first became playable because if that's the case then Baby Mario is first playable in Mario Golf 64
I wonder if Super Mario On The PS4 would have any new characters...
What? Mario have a game in PS4?
Shouldn't all the DK Country characters be considered first playable in the DK Country games? Just my two cents.
Adding shadow Mario AND Bowser jr. is the same as Adding Metal Mario as well as Mario, just saying… (they’re the same character).
Also chain chomps not only debuted in SMB3 and not SMW, but they’re not present anywhere in SMW at all (but I mean both of those mistakes would be easy ones to make).

One issue, gooigi should be earlier as he appeared in luigi's mansion for the 3ds (2018) I forget this, the game is forgettable enough, and since it is in a multiplayer mode, and who plays luigis mansion multiplayer, like if it's co-op sure, but who wants to play an ambient-puzzle-fishing-action game, (i have no other way to genre it) competitively?

You're wrong. Donkey Kong jr. Is the modern Donkey Kong.
It seems there are differing opinions on that one. I got the family history from the Mario Wiki, but the source there may be unofficial or out-of-date: www.mariowiki.com/Donkey_Kong_Jr.
@@JohnnyVector according to Leigh Loveday, Donkey Kong, the current one, is intended to be Donkey Kong Jr. Though, sure his relation to the first Donkey Kong is a bit ambiguous, I don't buy the idea that it wasn't retconned by Rare.
