I have the latest model and they’ve done away with the stalk lights and put a great LED above the back door with a switch at the light and a more convenient one just under the right hand sill. They have retained the double USB port, but have added an extra cig port making it two. I’ve done away with the stock ladder and use a 2.2m telescopic one too which I’ve added stronger feet and a 300mm x 280mm fold down top that I can sit on to remove or put on shoes and it makes it easier also to get in and out. This summer I’m fitting a Sirocco ll 12 volt fan that can be hard mounted because it can fold up to remain in the tent. Use computer fans to stop the condensation. they are all 12v so easy to wire in and there typically quite slim so would fit in any setup also can get really quite ones if you want to leave it running while you sleep.
Good review Sam, I am just looking at roof top setups, dunno about getting up there at 60 tho. A quick tip for zips, is to use some cheap silicone spray or crc occasionally to help lubricate & reduce fowling from salt, dirt, mud, uv, age, moisture, etc, also works well on ur fridge cover zips if they are getting shonky. You were right. I just bought this near exact model with more updated features and it was $1500 usd delivered. Great deal and beautiful setup! Thanks for the review.
My rooftop tent is still my swag. I collapse the middle pole and fold the swag in then tie a tarp down over it. Thats the very basic rundown but its just as quick to set up as mates RTT's, much lighter and barely sits above roofline.
Good video Sam. This RTT has been on my wish list for ages, but as you mentioned the price is a huge downside to purchasing one (I was quoted $5.5k recently supplied in SW of WA). I currently have a soft canvas RTT and love it, but yeah the setup and pack down times could be better, and yeah the moisture problem is always there. I'd probably look at a cheaper hard shell unit next. I couldn't go back to a swag now, I really like sleeping up high with my creature comforts now. Cheers
Hi Todd, regarding your moisture issue, have a look into some large desiccant packs (usually silica gel). You can leave them in the tent when you back it up to absorb moisture, then put them in an over on a pot next to the fire to dry out again. Use a good absorbent towel to wipe down the walls when you back up the tent. If you leave your bedding in the tent, get a fitted waterproof sheet to cover your bedding before closing it up so the moisture does not transfer to your bedding from the canvas.

Do you get cooling problems because your spottys are blocking a big amount of the inter cooler and i have a sahara and i had to take them off and get a light bar.
These are more expensive than a James Baroud, heavier, less areo dynamic, they have a shallow end, harder to close because of the bigger heavier struts, they rely purely on the strut to hold the tent up, they don't have a vent fan for moisture when your driving, it seems like thier is less space inside for bedding. Not sure why these are so popular, just because they can carry a load on top?
I prefer the tents with clam shell top but when it opens upwards at both ends. I don't like having the angle down towards my head or feet. A lot of wasted space IMO.
This shape is easier to errect and foldup. Also in they handle high winds much better, just nose them into the wind, much less canvas flapping. I've even rotated the car in the middle of the night when a storm came through, without packing it up. There's plenty of room for your feet at the low end.
what about shade and weather protection on the side entrances without having to shut the window no options there by the looks bit of a downer, has got the shade on the larger entrance but doesn't look like it would stop much sun or rain from getting in with the window open
When you run power for an LED strip you may look into a little fan to help with the condensation? I've seen that work well in small teardrop trailers and such.
Hey mate, Thanks so much for your detailed review. You touched on it briefly in your video, but what are your thoughts on the weight? I've put a deposit down on one of these after much research, but the guys at the local 4WD shop are worried about the weight especially when off road, given the maximum recommended roof weight for my 150 series Prado (100kg on road). Do you think that’s a strict rule one has to follow? I’m not planning on really intense 4WD-ing, just low-grade stuff and plenty of long dirt roads, but they’ve got me worried. Cheers, Steph
Other brands may come out and "compete" with lower prices but I don't see the alucab reducing in price. Other brands like Kings are having a crack now, while they may be cheaper there is no way in the world that they'll compare quality wise with alucabs years of development IMO, so essentially all you'd be waiting for is a cheaper product that is more than likely going to be inferior. I think also with the surface rust on the struts that surely it would be a lot worse were they on the outside? The weather and the tree branches would give them a hard old time.
Agreed, and i have the cheap Kings Kwiki pop up roof top tent. The quality is clearly lacking, however for the price i can get 6 of them.... I identified some weaknesses in the floor and corrected it with a 3.5mm marine ply sheet under the mattress, I also changed the straps to over centre latches and put a rubber seal around the top so its air tight when closed. $5000 USD for a rooftop tent is ridiculous. Like, absurdly ridiculous. Heck, that's within a few thousand of what my 100 Series Landcruiser cost in the first place. When a tent costs more than my bullbar, sliders and dual swingout rear bumper (ALL respected names in the overland community.....IronMan and SLEE), something is wrong. Just not seeing any value in a $5000 USD tent. And a $5000 USD tent shouldn't have ANY rust on anything. And the mesh on the outside? That's absurd. Hard pass for me.
My wife and I love to get out camping, more importantly we love gangbang's. At times it can get very messy with 4-5 people all defecating, urinating and vomiting on each other. Was just wondering how the material would hold up and could this unit be hosed out or pressure cleaned. We are currently using a tarp. It does the job but It is an offence to wee or poo in any public place (in a municipality or town) that is not specifically made for that purpose. Thanks

Wipes for the morning shower... Yep that's exactly what they're for 😉
My wife and I love to get out camping, more importantly we love gangbang's. Thanks

Mate I don’t agree with ya ( the price won’t come down)that kind of tent is nothing new, my mate fitted a similar one to a trailer back in 2007 all fibreglass back then, it cost $4500 13 years ago
Baby wipe shower 🤔
Gentleman's wash
Great except they are silly expensive.
No way I would ever own a rooftop tent , I like the freedom of being able to explore when I’m set up , but whatever makes ya happy...
Haha, really? Are you exploring in your rig at night? They are so easy to put down, why be negative?
@@rogerhalt3991Not being negative, I said what ever makes ya happy mate . And yes have explored at night , it's a different world at night... Where I go mate , don't want to be top heavy.
Iv the kings kwiky rtt. Its awful 😂
Its all i can afford and does the job. Hope it gets me through until Alu Cab price comes down. They are over 5k dude. Fark that
What’s wrong with the kwiky? Mine was great
Wayyyyy too expensive. Motop is only $3000
EARLY?.,?!, didn’t realise I’m first
Good review, but not for us
Bought not built
70kg? No way id put that on my roof. Plus no roof rack. 5k id rather buy a used camper trailer. Nice review though, if it didn't weigh so much id be sold
Jarrod you’re typical rooftop, arb, kings, Darche ect ect are around the 65kg do not much heavier
website actually states 88kg
Too bloody expensive
Good comments I forgot about my poles holder being worn but am also having that issue!
I just wrote up my review last week. overall it's a good tent but if your paying full price I don't think its totally worth the coin going to be giving James Baroud a try in the coming months I think
