Great review. I just purchased the Zoom F8 and love it. I have used the Sound Devices 633 for some time but needed more inputs and couldn't swing the extra monies to purchase the 688 so I picked up the F8. For the features available and comparable sound quality, I think Zoom hit this one out of the park. I would have preferred a better headphone amp as it is not a clean as the SD was and pro-level line outs would have put this unit over the top. I am thoroughly impressed with the Zoom F8 so much so that I have sold the SD633! Great job, Oliver!
I am using a battery plate that has a booster circuit in it and some Sony style NP-F 7.2v 6.6 Ah LiOn batteries. I show 12.1v on the F8 and run-time is approximately 9 hours.
hey - loved this. I want to be able to record a band out and about so 8 channels would be perfect! Drums percussion etc. - I'd like to see someone recording a band with it and test out different mics etc, Q: did phantom power apply across multiple channels at once or can you individually interchange all 8 channels? - so a ribbon mic can be on channel 3 next to a phantom power input without it being grouped and fried? I like dedicated machines like this :3
Hi Oliver very interesting your video I really liked, one question if you don't mind could you explain how you can set up this in a studio for record a band? mean how you can play with the digital noise rest etc...
Thanks for this Oliver - I’m looking for a way to boost my mic (rode ntg2 - which seems a fairly low signal actually). My thought was to get some sort of pre-amp - but this F4 or F8 will do that and a lot more... are you able to EQ the Channel? The ability to have a basic multitrack recorder and a stereo mix of all channels if needed seems a bonus. I’m just wondering if this would be an overkill for my normal needs (recording a basic interview).
Not overkill at all-simply because of those preamps! I’m not familiar with the NTG2, so I can’t speak to how clean the boost will be, but this thing is so good with my NTG3. Also-can’t speak to the F4 but I think it has similar preamps. The only eq options are hi-pass filters
Jesus Christ that thumbnail got my heart racing!
The whole bag is upside bleedin' down!

Love it! I’m still on the fence-what are you doing for batteries on the f8? AAs or did you invest in a rechargeable?

Zoom F8 question here. Monitoring the input signals of specified tracks separately during recording. How do you do it?
Hit the “PFL” button on any track and you get that track alone, while everything continues to record
@@OliverJHughes thanks !!!

A: yep! You can individually control which channels have phantom power and which do not.
Awesome seeing a RUclipsr who is obsessed with audio like me. Great video and channel my friend.
🙏🏻🙏🏻 we need more audio obsessed people!! Thanks Scott
What camera and picture style did you shoot this video in? Loving the skin tones!
Haha all of this was the Canon C100 in CLog. I think graded with one of Adobe's Eterna Luts.
Oliver J Hughes you look amazing here: 00:40 awesome color 😍
Interesting boom mic...I liked it

Not sure what you mean by digital noise - but you could for sure record a band as long as you didn't have more than eight channels of audio.

Have you reviewed Sound Devices Mix Pre
I haven’t! I have a few sound friends that use the mixpre
Good review.....would have liked to have heard a dialogue test though!!!
Thanks man, and good call on that--next time I have it I will for sure do a side by side dialogue test!
I look forward to hearing that sir!!......did you keep the F8 in the end though!?
Nope, this was just a rental. I'd like to try out a few others before upgrading from the H6
I hear that.....there is a rumour about a new F8+ is coming....do you know anything about this.....also ..have you tested the Sound Device 633 yet???
Black Steel I would love to get my hands on that Sound Device recorder--looks amazing! No I haven't heard about F8+
