I wish we could post videos of completed projects! I finished our hidden bookshelf/door several months ago, and it is fantastic and simply blows people away when they see it! Thank you so very much for this video and advice!
Great video, now to locate a chart/ math to determine where the pivot point goes. Otherwise seems like the template will just be trial and error so you dont hit the trim. Love the video, very detailed. Appreciate you sharing!

Great video. I was looking for ideas on how the hinges work and glad I stumbled across this. I believe I will be using small magnets on the trim stop to hold the door shut though.
Just finished a closet door/bookcase. The small cabinet magnets didn't work for me. Had to upgrade to a larger 4" magnet to keep the door closed. Had a little bit of spring in the bookcase and needed extra contact power
@@onFIREouttakes It just occurred to me that a more reliable method of actuating the latch would be to use two solid steel rods with a bell crank to change the direction of motion from vertical to horizontal. This would eliminate the potential failure of wire or rope. Hope that's helpful! 🙂

I'm curious how you decided where to place the hinge point? how far back from the front edge, how far from the side face.... and does it really matter as long as you are consistent between the positioning of the top and bottom hinge?
Placement for me was trial and error by creating a template and adjusting the hinge point until I got the swing and clearances right. For the bookcase to not hit the frame when swinging, you do have to place them right (and top and bottom need to match, of course).

Yes, although it would be much harder to drill for that cup to be recessed. I’m not sure how it would work and you’d have to modify the bottom of the cabinet but you much think about mounting that bottom hinge upside down?

This is great. I’m building an out swing door currently. My trim on the hinge side is numbing the door only allowing me to open about 1/2 way the door OR have a huge gap. Do I need to make an adjustment to my hinge positioning?
I have no experience with them and how they mount but if it’s accessible from the outside to manually actuate (or change batteries) it should work. Maybe a magnet to hold it closed too so it doesn’t just pop open every time you walk by.
A couple of things are unclear to me. Good project. 1. I tried doing this with a small sample but I had difficulty pivoting the top into the hinge after fixing the bottom. I needed to increase the gap. What is the clearance you left between top of door and frame as well as left, right and bottom? 2. How did such a large gap at the bottom get caulked and filled?
Great video! As a relative novice, I’m concerned about the top and bottom pivot points not being totally aligned / plumb…what’s the easiest way to ensure they are aligned?
Make sure the opening is square and plumb and that the wall is vertical. If it is, measure the same spot top and bottom from the frame (or make a template and use it to mark both hinge locations. That’s what I did anyway.
Hi i want to do something similar to this in my ensuite bathroom, there was a standard depth bathroom cabinet but behind it there is a 0.5m deep void space above the stairs, i want to have a standard opening bathroom cabinet but then press a latch or something which will then swing the whole cabinet open to reveal the much bigger storage concealed behind it. any ideas ?
That's a tough one. These hinges might work for that application. You'd just swing the entire cabinet with a door on the front. Clearance on that hinge side will be an issue though.
Great tutorial! I’m going to be building one in an attic location just like yours. What size smaller did you build the bookcase to fit inside your inside opening dimension so that it will fit without being too tight? 1/8” smaller? Thanks
What type of drill bit are you using to make the recessed holes for the hinge hardware? Looks like a hole saw bit but you don’t have to go all the way through.
How much clearance from the top do you need to position the door past the set screw and hinge bolt that sits proud of the top horizontal jamb? I would like to maximize the height of the shelf. I guess they’re variables in play here. Ie depth of shelf…width of jamb rough opening etc. but do you remember yours?
Hey great work! Could you post what the measurements for the hinge placement that you used were? from the edge of the shelf to the pivot point. Thanks in advanced.
Thanks! The measurements are a little complicated so I made measured drawings to download. Check out the link in the description of the video below to download them.
It’s in the plans linked in the description and maybe in a comment below. If I remember right (check the plans) I went with 3/4in on one side and 1.5in on the other for the best swing and fit.
Thank you very much for this video. I’m in the process of doing a full size shelf that is 47”W x 67”H x 15”D and even though I already ordered the same hinges, I don’t think it’s going to hold the weight. Any ideas as to the max dimensions or weight you can do without it sagging? Thanks for any
Sorry, I’ve never pushed it. They are very robust hinges. The bottom hinge holds all the weight. The top just keeps it from tipping and holds no weight. If you plan to fully load it with books it may give you trouble. If it’s just the bookcase with some decorations, you may be okay.
Sorry for the delayed response! I bet you’ve got it fixed by now. I just mortised some of the plates (the top). The bottom I left proud of the frame (and shelf).
Nice build I'm building a pantry door with shevles on the inside and been trying to find a good way to hid hinges and hold weight .where and what hinges did you use I couldn't find your link .thank you and again nice video explain a lot

Probably with modifications. Most shelves are not strong enough on their own to support weight without sitting on the ground. If you strengthened it, and then framed the opening to fit the size of the shelf, it might work.
The gap is different on each side (for mine). Details are in the plans (link in description). If you still have questions, shoot me an email and I’m happy to help!
I’m stuck…I have it all built, but when I go to test fit the bookcase with the hinges, I can’t fit the bookcase in the frame because of the hinges. I left gaps on the top and bottom of the frame for clearance…maybe I didn’t leave enough of a gap? Could I make each of the hinges flush with the bookcase and frame to create more of a gap?
Oh no! Sorry, Lindsi! Yes, that's exactly what I would do. Recess the face plate of the hinges where you need to to provide that clearance. Hit me up if you have more trouble and I can try to help you out.
Only thing I would like to have explained was how you located/ plumbed the upper and lower hinges that were attached to the upper and lower jamb.

Wonder if some fairly strong magnets recessed in the trim that is attached to the shelf would hold up and keep it closed?
Yes, that should work!

Yes, although it would be much harder to drill for that cup to be recessed. I’m not sure how it would work and you’d have to modify the bottom of the cabinet but you much think about mounting that bottom hinge upside down?
Can you overload this style of hinge? It seems like they might bind if you have enough weight away from the axis the door rotates about.
I haven’t had an issue when fully loaded with books. Because it rides on a ball bearing, I think it would be just fine.

Yes, move the hinge point closer to the center and it should allow the door to swing clear of that trim.

Good luck with your project!
Unrelated to the video , Curtis stokes has a 48 foot California yacht that may be right for you
Thanks Harold! Will check it out. I think we know the one and unfortunately it's a 2 stateroom version.
Does the Jam need to be the Same Depth of the bookcase?
No. My bookcase is 6in in a typical 2x4 framed jam.
Did you mortise all 4 hinge areas or just some. I spent way too long today trying to get spacing correct and get everything to fit.
It's in the video description: Hinge: amzn.to/3nFNpBR, Latch: amzn.to/37AUpua
Good luck with your project!
@@onFIREouttakes thank you
Magnetic latches would work.
Definitely!
I have a 6" wide shelf. How do I know how many inches from the frame to install the pivot?
I had to use trial and error but if you bought the plans, use the template hinge position and see if that works first.
@@onFIREouttakes I don't know anything about plans. I'm just trying to gauge how to set a pivot hinge

I have a buddy that used magnets , I had no idea that door even existed until he showed me !
That’s a great idea! Thanks Patricia!
I know it was a long time coming but I now have measured drawings available for this project. Sorry it took so long! You can find them here: onfirefamily.com/plans/ or at the link in the description of this video. I hope they help you with your project! Let me know what you think!
Where did you buy that latch you are using, i cant find it anywhere, and the ones i do find has opposite closing direction. Can you send a link to it?
It is linked in the description of the video. Good luck with your project!
Great video! Been meaning to do this.. Can this be done with a pre-made book shelf? Just add the hinges?
Probably with modifications. Most shelves are not strong enough on their own to support weight without sitting on the ground. If you strengthened it, and then framed the opening to fit the size of the shelf, it might work.
Whats the setout for the hinge?
How big of a gap did you have to leave on each side for the door to swing properly?
The gap is different on each side (for mine). Details are in the plans (link in description). If you still have questions, shoot me an email and I’m happy to help!
can you place the hinges down the floor, or the door has to be above the ground?
You would just need to recess the hinge cup in the floor but otherwise that would work just fine.
Can I ask what your rough opening was compared to your bookshelf?
Sorry, I don’t know it off hand. It’s in the plans linked in the description.
Would these hinges still be sound to use on a full door side space shelf?
I think so. They are really strong and well engineered. I’d try it.
@@onFIREouttakes thanks! I am excited to try and do this myself! Thanks for the tutorial, very informative
