  • Hi, I’m Caroline Rider of Rider Horsemanship. This month’s Holistic Horse “Ask the Expert” Q&A is about "The Purpose and Mis-use of Round Pens/Corrals in Horse Training." This month’s viewer question is: “Dear Caroline, I just bought this horse and he goes crazy in the round pen when I work with him. He bolts away from me and keeps running. I try to stop him and he is so worried and breathing heavy. He will stop and the minute I move or ask him out he runs again and even faster. Can you explain why he does this and what I can do to stop it!” While I can explain the why I will not be able to demonstrate strategies in this month;s video that will help you stop your horse's madness in the round pen. Please stay tuned for next month's video will I will show you how to help a horse like this.
The round pen, or round corral, has many positive purposes when it comes to training. Unfortunately, they can also be used as a negative training environment where dominance, force training occurs. Dominance, force training is used to develop submissiveness in our horses. Generally, there is a lot of making the horse run until it is ready to collapse. The horse becomes sacked out at this stage - exhausted, breathing heavy, sweating profusely and most of all confused, bewildered and scared. This is when most people allow them to stop and the damage is done.
The damage is caused by people coming into the space of the round pen with aggressive intentions and energy. They have been taught, or watched this being taught, to dominate the horse and the only way is to make them run themselves into the ground. The horse is a victim at this point. I've worked with so many young, un-started horses who have not had any negative training or handling experiences with people. When asked to work in the round pen they are full of questions and wanting to join you, be with you. They are easy to develop into willing partners. I have also spent more time re-starting horses that have had negative round pen experiences and they are the ones who are petrified of the round pen. The moment you bring them into the round pen space, they go into flight mode and begin running away from you and doing laps around the pen. It's almost impossible to get them to stop and check in, let alone feel safe enough to want to join you in the work - and, that is what I am all about. Developing the relationship and partnership needed for the horse to want to be with you and want to work with you.
I have listed below, and demonstrate in this video, why I use the round pen and the positive affects of my training approach and method. To find out more about my training method please visit my website: www.riderhorsemanship.com.
    Purpose/Intention of Round Pens/corrals
    - To create an intimate space for connecting mind and body, bonding and learning
    - To develop the 3 levels of joining that are important to both relationship and partnership
    - To develop the mindset of focus, relaxation and cooperation that are necessary when training
    - To assist in developing the mind of a horse
    - To assist in developing purposeful cardio
    - To develop liberty play with your horse
    Power of Position
    - Understand the natural drive line on a horse when working on controlling movement and leading from behind
    Purpose of Movement
    - Control movement
    - Build cardio
    - Motivate the 'try"

    Dear, dear Caroline,
I rode way back in the 70's and 80's natural horsemanship wasn't on the radar. Very long story short; I got back into horses to teach my granddaughter.
Suddenly there were all these trainers who used the round pen (which I had never used/heard of).
A friend introduced me to a trainer through videos, who had really responsive, impressive results with horses. I tried the method and though it worked, I wasn't happy with the overreactiveness I was getting. Recently my horse has become very spooky on the trail. While searching for more instructive videos I came across you!
I have already gotten better equipment and tried your technique with my mare. It's a miracle. So now I've just watched this video showing proper round pen technique. I am so excited and happy to hear what you had to say about "running" your horse around. This is going to be the next thing I do! So completely back to basics with gentle firmness.
Thank you for putting this out there for OLD riders like myself to learn some methods that can elevate our enjoyment and effectiveness through respect!!!
    Love it.

I understand what you're saying however in my experience, untrusting, scared horses usually got that way because someone got heavy handed with them. When I try to regain their trust, the whip stays behind, only soft hands until they're ready to except a little pressure. As you know, it's a feel process and my take lots of time.

Hi Caroline! Well learning patience and tolerance AND standing still is difficult, isn't it! This past weekend I focused on rhythm with Jupe. In grooming, walking alongside, and riding. I closed my eyes and counted his footfalls. Allowing myself to stop thinking about techniques and get more visceral is tough. I can see glimpses of where we'll be by following your methods. And it's going to be pretty spectacular. Xoxoxo, Rebecca

Caroline, I am so happy that I found your video on RUclips last night. Earlier in the afternoon I had done all of the wrong things with my horse. I wanted her to stay out on the rail in her gaits, something I had never taught her. She feels more confident when she is on lead line when doing round pen work. After viewing your video I realized that I had been too aggressive with the whip and been too much in her space. I realized that I had frightened her, and all she wanted to do was escape by running around and changing direction, and ignoring me by trying to smell the poop as she raced by. I felt so depressed that I had pushed her to that point. I hoped that I hadn't damaged her beyond repair. So today, I went to see her and she ran to meet me at the gate. I took her to the round pen and began with lunging her on the lead rope to help her understand what I was going to do. Next I brought her to the center pen and unclipped her lead line and asked her to move away in the same gentle but purposeful way that you did in the video. she immediately knew what I was asking her to do. I maintained my place in the center of the round pen and gave her my intentions just as you demonstrated. I am amazed that she responded so quickly to what I was asking of her. She made a few mistakes bu I corrected her in the same gentle way and she gave me her attention and and she really tried in every way that she could to understand and please me. I ended the session the same way that i started it it, with her on the lead line.with lots of love and praise. Caroline, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your knowledge and love for horses through your videos

@ 26:35 I couldn't agree with you more! I CANNOT stand dominance training - it only creates a fearful horse and you will never have a connection with horses. I rehabbed an abandoned horse that everyone at the barn called the "jerk" horse. I brought him back to a more calm and confident horse. It didn't happen overnight but I always kept myself calm and gave him security and love. It just makes sense to treat them this way. It makes me absolutely sick when I see the 'show them who's boss dominance training'. I'm sooo glad I found you last year. You are truly kind & gentle with these wonderful and beautiful creatures!

Hi Caroline. Being older with a metal rod in my back and having MS, which messes with my balance, I use my round pen for grooming. My horses walk up to me and follow me everywhere. I’m enjoying your videos and like the fact that you treat horses with respect. We moved to a small rural farm community where horses are considered property and everyone who has given me training advice use the round pen to run their horses to burn off energy. I haven’t ridden freely yet, due to my chronic back pain and MS, which introduced fear of being put in a wheelchair into my otherwise fearless world. I’m restarting my geldings after the winter and will be working on getting permission to mount. One was a feedlot horse and I don’t think he was treated too well. I think we have a pretty good relationship but I want to always work at making it stronger and letting them know no matter what, I will always protect and put their safety and needs first. I’m really going to try and be aware of my energy and chakras. I suffer from major depression and anxiety but my horses always pull me out of it. Finding your videos was reassuring to me that I’m not crazy for not putting my boys into the round pen and running them for an hour. I’m looking forward to the warmer weather and warming my boys up from winter. I plan on riding them around my farm. I need to reteach myself how to ride and now, retrain my body for balance.

Caroline I am picking up something new every time I watch your RUclips lessons and especially as I revisit the online academy modules. Once again, thank you!Around 19:00 and again around 23:00 Lovey stomps her foot. My horse does this at times while I'm trying to work on free lunging. He seems to be impatient, but more in the spirit of "Will you just tell me (clearly) what you want!" Than aggressive or peeved. What's Lovey saying at those spots with you? She's ready and would you quit gabbing already?!? Her manner of being is noticably different from Sundance, or the others. Such a sweet face! I look forward to watching some beautiful riding connections from the two of you in the future! Best, Rebecca

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  7 лет назад

Hi Rebecca!!! So great to see you on my channel! When assessing a horse's reaction or behavior I always watch their expression. When Lovey comes in and stands with me (around 19:40) and stomps she is relaxed and her ears and eyes are relaxed and soft. She hates flies (typical OTTB - thin skin!) and does this often. Now, if we were standing around under saddle during one of my clinics and she stomps, it's usually because she is bored and frustrated. Standing is still new for her and learning patience and tolerance is part of it!
Yes, Lovey was named Lovey because she is one of the sweetest, most loving horses I've ever met! XOXO to you and Jupe!

Caroline, I have recently been given the opportunity to work with a beautiful 13-year-old, western pleasure, quarter horse mare. Her owner is too busy to spend time with her and says she hasn't ridden her in over a year and she's asked me to start working with her. Because she's been left alone for so long, I've simply been spending time grooming and then walking her around the grounds to get to know each other. Then I started researching natural training methods and came upon your videos, which I LOVE! I've been so excited to get into the round pen and start implementing what I'm learning. Here's the problem. In the two weeks that I've been going out to see her, I've only been able to get her into the round pen three times, all of which were BEFORE I found your videos. Twice with her owner, who ends up having to get behind her to get her going, and only once on my own. The last two days that I've been out, she'll just plant her feet and won't go towards the gate. I can lead her anywhere else, but she just won't go towards that gate with out someone urging her from behind. She's very sweet and has followed everywhere else despite being nervous at some points. Any ideas on what I can do?

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  8 лет назад +1

+Letitia Jacob Hi Letitia and Welcome! Congrats on your opportunity with your new horse! Your situation is complicated due to your horse being a former WP show horse? or school horse. So often school horses and show horses get "sour" towards the work because there hasn't been any meaning or purpose for them. They are talented and eager to please and do the work and then it gets abused and over used and drilled. I've worked with many ex or former show horses, many who won and were broken down (spirit) before they were 10 yrs old. They lost their luster and their eye was dull because they had checked out a long time ago. Perhaps your mare is still there and her spirit is intact. Sounds like it:) She also has a new "leaf" on life with you. You care and listen to her. She is free to speak her mind and not be forced into doing things she doesn't see purpose in. Right now the round pen represents all those things she doesn't like. You need to work on developing the bond, relationship, so that she wants to be with you enough to trust you AND you need to work on earning her respect. No matter how much you love her she still won't go. You need to work with her through specific exercises that develop the bond and level of respect you need. It all comes down to a balance of love and leadership (relationship and respect).
I offer many long distance teaching and training opportunities should you be interested. especially with mares, I feel like force and dominance doesnt work the same with mares, even if trainers use it they know the results they are getting, but most people do not and mention about aggressive, mean, moody, dangerous mares. Mares are more intuitve much like any hot breed they feel your energy and emotions, mares really dont like aggressive treatment, most of the people who complain about their mares use aggressive treatment, and i just dont think they get the point of the techniques being used and instead use it to like force the aggression and respect out of a mare which Never Ever Works.

    • @brittanyritenour4695

Many mares are actually extremely sweet, just very mishandled, obviously their are trainers with some of these methods who know what they are achieving dont complain about mares, but most people dont understand it. I am no horse expert, but I know one thing is wrong and that is how people handle mares a lot of the time and the bad wrap they get. They are extremely sweet they want to understand and trust, as well as feel comfortable with you and if you give them this they will always help and take care of you when they need it. I love the heart of mares.

Like I remember a horse, a saddlebred mare, this one lady said she is a b'tch, this horse would either take care of you or choose to do what she wanted instead, super smart horse, this lady was like grumbling, like we dont get along, mean while she's like slapping things around, brushing her real hard, just everything with brute force and her energy was very negative. Broadway was just getting frusterated, aggressive, etc, and shes moving around, threatening to bite, kind of moving her hind legs and just like did not what to be touched by this lady at all. I first thought. who is the btch. Look how you are handling her? Mares are so smart, and they are nurturers as well as parents often times, so why dont we nurture them. Be a back bone for them as well. Yet this same mare is super gentle towards kids, but she is very smart.

Hi Tripsten and Welcome! There can be many factors contributing, causing, a horses anxiety in the round pen. Most likely, the round pen is a trigger, past memory from a bad experience in the pen. If they speed up and act out it often indicates they are emotionally and physically imbalanced. Slow things down is what I recommend and if you would like to learn how to develop your skills as a horseman/woman and develop your horse's potential, check out my big horse-human training program www.taoofhorsemanship.com/masterymembership.

This size has worked best and for the following reasons: not too small where it will stress a larger horse physically; has enough space so you are not on top of a horse that is more anxious and feels defensive, threatened when working like this; allows for riding; any bigger and you will be moving too much should you have to develop a lazy horse's work ethic.
Yes! I have a large educational DVD selection with a beginners series: riderhorsemanship.com/index.php/dvd-information-where-to-begin/. The first series begins with four DVD's, with two DVD's specializing in round pen work where we develop both the relationship and partnership.
I look forward to keeping in touch!
      Warmly,
      Caroline

Margaret Harrison Thank you sssssoooo mucccchhhhh, at last someone who explains what should happen with our body and the horses body when walking, trotting and cantering, I have been riding for 2 and a half years, and have had sebere back back pain, because none of the trainers taught me. I have researched the info on you tube videos myself. Also have gone back to basics and started again studying these videos before I ride again. Keep up this very important work to help horse riders, thanks again, Margaret

What do I do if my horse doesn’t want to come in? Every time I stop her she just stays by the edge of the round pen and won’t give me both her eyes?

Hi CJ and Welcome! Most horses won't come in and that's because they are afraid. Most have had horrible round pen experiences that ruined their trust and confidence and others won't come in because they either don't trust people or you're not asking the right way. Learning how to develop connection, join up and hooking on in the free lunge can be complicated. I teach you how and help you help your horse work through trust issues in my online courses. I have a horse with an arab mind set very high spirited just starting round pen training with him but I have to be very aggressive and it takes a good 30 mins for him to hook up with me.... I guess Im confused when you say you dont want to be bossy... I have to be with my horse or he bucks me off him and will run all over me? Maybe over time this will change? but right now it takes me a good 30 mins of driving him before he hooks up and then when he does we are golden and he is such a sweet boy.

    • @TaoofHorsemanship
      @TaoofHorsemanship  7 лет назад

Hi Jeff and Welcome! It should never take you that much time for your horse to connect, join up and your horse to hook on. Sounds like you are coming on too strong, aggressive in your actions and your Arab has had some negative (fearful, aggressive) round pen experiences. I can change all of this and help you develop a calm, connected, trusting horse.

Hi Donna and Welcome! I do offer you all a video on my channel of working with a green horse for the first time. Here is the video ruclips.net/video/yFEsTMz48dk/видео.html
Should you want to learn more, I offer a wide array of learning opportunities here at my FL facility and on my online training academy for people and horses. Here is a little more about my approach.
We believe in a holistic approach to horsemanship, providing expert knowledge and instruction for the whole horse and rider. Our approach is multi-dimensional and includes the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of both the person and horse’s well-being.
We specialize in both foundation training and problem-solving and have the answers you are searching for. The key in horsemanship and having the partner you want with your horse is in foundation training. If your horse has either had 1) trauma or 2) hasn’t had a correct and solid foundation (start), they will either be too scared to learn or missing key building blocks to their development.
Horses need years of development and learning to be at the level you see in many of the professional clinician and trainer’s horses - including what you see in my videos. There are no quick fixes, tricks or gimmicks and like any solid education, it takes a curriculum or program to follow so you are building a correctly foundation.
We have 8 training modules that we follow in our curriculum that specialize in self-awareness, the spiritual connection, relationship, discipline, confidence, biomechanics and balanced riding. Click here for details on our training pyramid www.riderhorsemanship.com/rh-training-program.
Should you be interested in learning online, we offer a very large and comprehensive online training academy for people and horses. Click here for details about our online academy training courses www.taoacademy-horse-training-courses.com/.
