Thank you, I was refreshing my memory on what to look for when buying a horse. We lost everything when the economy fell back in 2007 and was devastated over loosing our farm and horses. It's been 12 long years and we have a nice little mini farm and getting ready to get two horses. It's been a long journey. This video was so helpful and I'm totally impressed by your kindness, and yet understand the importance of being the alpha. I can't get enough of this video, the connection you two have is incredible. Im looking to purchase a horse for my husband and I, after about a 7 year break from owning. This was refreshing to see and Im excited to try and implement this kind of relationship with our horse to be! so informative thank you
So glad I found this video! I will be having a vet do a prepurchase on a 3 yr old, 15 hand, Friesian/quarter horse cross, colt next week. If he passes the vet test I will see how much I can round penn him. (He is green broke right now). I will take the advice to get a blood test for drugs though. When I saw him in person at first - he seemed tense, (ears back but not pinned - he was not being aggressive at all, feet gathered under hum, back slightly arched and tail clamped), but I put that down to strangers being near, and him being in the wash rack when we got there. The owner is exposing him to lots of new things - but he let's him be a colt out in the arena with the other horses, once he has done his work. I did wonder if he was pushing him too fast, and if the colt was getting a bit of overload with so much newness being introduced... He seemed responsive for the owner in the round pen and walking over/around obstacles around the property. Fingers crossed on the vet test.... : )

Caroline Rider Thank you so much for your response, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing Part II as I don't want to miss any of your wonderful tips. I have watched this particular video a few times now and it has definitely been helpful. I was initially considering purchasing your DVDs, however it's a $75 fee alone for postage (I was going to get the first package) to Australia and I missed your recent sale. I prefer the idea of having it available online, so will look further into your Tao Method course. Would you recommend I wait until I have my own horse before embarking on this though? Or am I able to download the videos or are they only for streaming? I am making sure I don't rush into this and purchase the right horse/s for my young family, and for the horse too. Thanks again, really love the work you do! :)
Hi Brooke M! The online Tao Method Course is as much about you as it is about horses! If you were to enroll before you purchased a horse, you would be ahead with more knowledge and skills with my work.
Thank you so much for this video! It's extremely insightful. So, I am about to buy a horse that I already know. He's a 12 year old Quarter and he's very sweet and he rides amazingly, although sometimes the wind or a plastic bag will spook him. His response is never something I can't handle, but he does spook a little. Mostly, however, I feel that the current stable boy spooks him. At the stables where he's at, the idea is definitely to dominate a horse in a very traditional way. For example, when they wanted to teach me how to lunge him, they were extremely forceful and used his fear against him to make him obey, going so far as to smack him with the end of the lunge rope. Later, when I lunged him, I did so in a quiet manner, and his response was much more quiet and relaxed and he willingly walked, trotted and cantered around me. However, when at the stables, he always remains on the lookout of something that can happen (thus using his right brain (right?)). Now, I definitely do not agree with this traditional method and believe that he will be better of living with me, being handled in a consistent, calm and thoughtful manner and of course building up a relationship with him. My question to you is whether based on this story you think this horse will calm down completely and trust me completely when he's taken out of this environment ? I am aware that I've got to work on it... but do you think it's possible?
Hi Lou and Welcome! Sounds like you are doing a great job with this horse. He is responding well to you. And, he is also being triggered by the energy and actions of those at his barn who remind him of harsh training and handling. While you will continue to be able to progress with him he will not be able to completely relax and trust your way because he is constantly reminded, daily, of what can happen. He is hypervigilant (looks around alot and is tense) because he is scared. Until you remove him from this environment and move him to one where he can relax and focus on you solely, your progress will be limited.
@@TaoofHorsemanship Thank you so much for your response! Your advice is worth a lot and makes me even more keen on getting my horse here! I am actually taking him out of that environment ASAP, since I am preparing my own pasture and walk-in stable adjacent to my home. I can't wait to start working with him when he's away from those stables and can completely relax! Thanks again! Your videos are the best!

Hello Caroline! I was wondering if you could make a video that talks about how to gain a horse's trust. You seem like you have bonded with a lot of horse's in your whole experience. Joel Jose Hi Joel! Buying a horse is the cheapest part! Purchase cost depends on many factors, bloodlines, training, etc. Boarding horses also depends on location and amenities. Board can cost anywhere from $300-$900 a month.
Would you be willing to look at a short video and just provide me with very general overview? Am looking to purchase a horse. I have visited the horse with my trainer and am looking to do a second visit soon. I really like your holistic/natural approach rather than the "typical" approach most trainer have.
Hi Al and Welcome! I offer virtual video coaching & assessments. Please click here should you be interested in me reviewing video of your horse www.taoofhorsemanship.com/coaching-instruction-1.
Wonderfully informative and so sensitive to the animal. It is great to see a really holistic approach to the education and care of equines that is really respectful. Can I ask you Caroline whereabouts you live. Is it in the USA ?
I almost bought a horse - the seller's agent was really cranky when I insisted on my own vet. The horse had a very stiff shoulder that seemed to soften with movement. The bloodwork came back questionable concerning CPK (? muscle pain indicator) and liver numbers were elevated. The seller's agent insisted the vet tested the wrong horse or his lab was faulty. She had her vet re-test and the numbers were better but the liver was still out of balance. I backed out of the sale. Hesitantly, she refunded my deposit and then promptly blocked me from her FB page. Oh yes and this horse is still for sale. Off the track Arabian.
I know this is a really old video, but you said that you mostly focused on trail horses. Does this mean that your program is more applicable to trail/pleasure horses, and not to competition dressage?
Hi Candy and Welcome! Most of my audience, students, are casual riders who mostly trail ride, enjoy their relationship and participate in riding foundation basics. My training system follows classical dressage and working equitation (I am certified) with some reining mixed in. My system is very well-rounded and trains both the horse owner and their horse from ground to riding, start to finish. Ryan Equestrian Hi Ryan and welcome! What are your horse's symptoms or behaviors? I have found that most of our horses are shut down, checked out which resembles lazy behavior, a sluggish response or "dead" quiet. Does this sound familiar?
She's dead quiet, unresponsive, lower lip hangs, she closes her eyes at any given chance, will stand tied without any argument for hours. Idk its weird. She's been this way for over a year
Ryan Equestrian Hi Ryan. She could be very checked out. I've worked with horses with this behavior. Many are former Western Pleasure or reining horses. Does she have any "get-up-and-go" meaning is she responsive to cues, aids or do you have to get on her case to get her to respond? Do you know her background? Caroline
Yes she loves to run and get up and go under saddle, but on the ground, she's like dead...lower lip hangs, if she doesn't wanna do something, like be lead over a puddle, she won't do it. You can pull on her, smack her as much as you want, she just shuts down. She is 19 years old. She is a race bred tb x appaloosa. I am not sure if she ever raced. She was used as a broodmare and lesson horse..was used as a jumping horse when she was younger...I use her as a trail horse now
hi Caroline I have a 13. year old thoroughbred gelding who has just started rearing I have gotten his teeth checked, seen if the saddle fits, any problems I thought might be wrong. I have gotten a trainer out to look at what might be wrong and she gave me some tips that aren't really helping. He often tries to bite me. Any tips as to what I can do or what may be wrong with him?
+Lexi Bear Hi Lexi and Welcome! You will need to give me more specifics before I can give you a "guesstimate" as to what I think is going on. Re giving me more specifics, please let me know how long you have been riding this horse; what type of schooling or training are your doing, anything new to his program that could be causing this behavior? Re checking his teeth, how does he handle the bit? Is he quiet? Does he mouth the bit nervously, constantly? Does he pull and push, root, through contact? Once I have more detailed info I will be able to trouble shoot for you. Warmly, Caroline
+Caroline Rider (Rider Horsemanship) I just switched to English with him as he did not like the western saddle when I first I got him. I have been trying to train him to jump he seemed like he liked it at first but after a few rounds of jumping he starts to rear with me
+Lexi Bear Something has had to change from your normal routine for him to be acting up? You need to think about this and do your best to observe his behavior when you ask him to do something, go somewhere. You still need to give me details and on when he bites you, what are you doing?
I have been trying to find an answer to this question for a long time....maybe here....I have a 14year old AQHA gelding and when I lunge him he immediately puts his head almost totally to thee ground. What does this mean? It kinda freaks me out.
If you're interested in a laid-back species, like a Clydesdale or a Gypsy Vanner, and when you go to the seller to see the horse, and the horse is the opposite of laid back, something's not right.

+Caroline Rider (Rider Horsemanship) Aloha Caroline, I myself was looking for a "Part II" of your video. Because I currently live in HI. thinking of getting into buying a ranch. So naturally I started looking at various training methods for horses, and humans. So many experts that train horses (to me) looks pretty harsh. Your teaching methods seems more makes the horse "Think" instead of "React". Then those guy's say "Good Boy" if the horse guesses correctly. I've had dog's all my life (love animals, and being outside), and train them to be respectful of others. I was looking for the Part II to see what else I should be looking for. Thinking, first of all before I buy any horse is to get training myself. So I know what he/ she is thinking, or how to communicate with this animal. I've seen some of your videos and really find them very informative. Keep up the great work!! Aloha Randy
Hi Caroline, I'm looking at a horse I want to buy, but he is out of state and on the other side of Australia (I'm in NSW and he is in QLD) so I can't visit him before buying him.. I am a dressage rider and own a dressage horse and am buying a second horse to do eventing on (my horse hates jumping) I was wondering what you think I should do, but him or find a vet near him and get him to check the horse out (without me being there) or do I buy the horse and get a vet to check him out when he arrives and if he is drugged or lame I send him back? Or what should I do!? Please help!!!!!!!!
+WhinnyTheHorse Hello Whinny and Welcome! I would have a vet (not the horse you are interested in buying owner's vet, an impartial vet) conduct the vet check and xrays - esp if you are considering jumping. You need to make sure this "potential" horse doesn't have hock issues, fractures etc.I would also make sure that the purchasing contract has a stipulation in it regarding 30 lease to purchase and/or your vet will run blood work when the horse arrives to determine drug use. Make sure you cover your bases and whatever questions you have for me you need to ask the seller and have them in the contract, such as; Sellers horse will not have any drug in his system 30 days prior purchase etc. I'm not familiar with this language as I don't buy or sell show/competition horses. If you are buying high end show horses you need to contact an equine lawyer that deals with this type of industry and knows the language and abuses. I hope this helps! Keep me posted. Warmly, Caroline

+PonyparkcityJans lovertuh Hi PonyPark and Welcome! When purchasing foals, there are a few key areas to focus on. The most obvious problem will involve leg abnormalities. These can include contracted tendons, toeing out, toeing in, over at the knees (bucked knees), back at the knees (calf knees) and cow hocks. Some foals will correct themselves before they are 3 months of age and that is why I like to wait until the foal is older, stronger and able to run and gain muscle. If the hind leg is long that is also a good inclination that the foal will be tall. It’s also easy to tell the confirmation of a foal when they are just a few months old - after they have gained muscle. I like to see a round topline meaning the foals neck, from the pole, to the wither is round, not sunken in or hollow. A round topline tells me how easy it will be for the foal to “come through,” reach and bend when traveling. This is important to both dressage and reining, having a confirmation that allows the horse to move fluidly, naturally, and carry themselves with balance. Of course bloodlines dictate many of the physical and mental traits. Knowing the sire and dam will help you understand the foal’s temperament and physical agility, abilities.Warmly, Caroline
Hi D and Welcome! Yes, there is. Here's the science. Dr. Steve Peterswww.horsebrainscience.info An evidence-based approach to horsemanship involves assessing and integrating scientific findings to inform decisions and create best practices in horsemanship.
@@dshe8637 Hi D! Sorry, but your wrong. I've trained and re-trained thousands of horses developing their left brain so they think more vs react (right brain controls their instincts, sensory processing and self preservation). I've also written published articles about this. While there is still very little to support it, both Dr Peters and me and the few out there know it to be true and will continue to educate those who are willing, and ready, to listen and work with horses with this level of understanding.
You are a gem. Thank you so much for posting the best informative PPE exam on YT. I am very impressed. Subscribed!

Your videos are the best!

thank you, you're great!
Hello Caroline! I was wondering if you could make a video that talks about how to gain a horse's trust. You seem like you have bonded with a lot of horse's in your whole experience. Besides, I'm interested in bonding with my Tennessee Walkers that don't exactly trust me just yet. Thank you for taking the time to read my request!
EquestrianHayleigh2148 Hi EquestrianHayleigh2148 and Welcome! Trust is one of the primary foundation blocks to any solid training method. All of my videos on Holistic Horse's Blog Channel include training approaches, techniques and ways of developing trust: ruclips.net/p/PL1UMI_k13fYWO_amtAh_aCljfta7T_5XI. I also have an online course that deals with trust, relationship and true partnership as well as many DVD's on my website: www.riderhorsemanship.com. Warmly, Caroline
Joel Jose Hi Joel and welcome! Thank you. My training facility is in Ocala, FL. I own many horses and a pony that will be for sale this Fall. Warmly, Caroline
AMEN!
I have a question. I have a horse that I've owned for over a year who ALWAYS appears drugged...any idea on why?
She was used as a broodmare and lesson horse..was used as a jumping horse when she was younger...I use her as a trail horse now
She will also randomly get uncomfortable and nervous, and then randomly get way too relaxed, close her eyes, and let her bottom lip hang
hi Caroline I have a 13. year old thoroughbred gelding who has just started rearing I have gotten his teeth checked, seen if the saddle fits, any problems I thought might be wrong.
+Caroline Rider (Rider Horsemanship) I have been riding him for almost a year now.He isn't really quiet with a bit hs sometimes mouths at it
+Caroline Rider (Rider Horsemanship) I just switched to English with him as he did not like the western saddle when I first I got him.
+Caroline Rider (Rider Horsemanship) I'm usually either tacking up, brushing him, or me just picking up his feet, and after I give him treats.
If you want to breed from your new horse you need a vet to check that they are fertile as if they are barren it's not fixable
Had a horse that's could not walk and I had to put my horse down but I have her baby
I have been trying to find an answer to this question for a long time....maybe here....I have a 14year old AQHA gelding and when I lunge him he immediately puts his head almost totally to thee ground. What does this mean? It kinda freaks me out.
If the buyer doesn't have the money for a Vet's PPE, then they can't afford a horse in the first place. Horses are not kittens or puppies.
If you're interested in a laid-back species, like a Clydesdale or a Gypsy Vanner, and when you go to the seller to see the horse, and the horse is the opposite of laid back, something's not right.

Hi Jim and Welcome! Thank you. I'm so glad my work resonates with you!
Can you do the part two of the video?
+WhinnyTheHorse Hi Whinny! What are you looking for that wasn't given in this video? Warmly, Caroline
+Caroline Rider (Rider Horsemanship)
Aloha Caroline, I myself was looking for a "Part II" of your video.
Aloha
Randy
Thaaaaank you so much
Hi Caroline, I'm looking at a horse I want to buy, but he is out of state and on the other side of Australia (I'm in NSW and he is in QLD) so I can't visit him before buying him..
Random question, 'Do you know how to train horses for plowing?'.
+Susanne Winslow Hello Susanne and Welcome! I have trained horses to pull carriages that have also pulled plows (Amish country in PA). Warmly, Caroline
There are a lot of videos teaching how to train a cart horse and driving horses and plow horses basically any of these types of teasing will help you to learn the basic fundamentals to get you started 😘 good luck to you ❤️
I started my has a baby on training
Thumbs up 👆 thumbs up 👆
I really want to buy a Irish Cob but I can’t afford it, I don’t know why I’m here. 😂
Do you have other horse youtubers that share the same viewpoint as you
+Brandon Yuan Hi Brandon and Welcome! I have a following if that's what you are asking, people that subscribe to my channel, purchase my DVD's, attend clinics, internships and such. Warmly, Caroline
+Caroline Rider (Rider Horsemanship) ok
how would u ask ur vet to come with u
I’m 65 yrs old, do I’m to old to get a horse 😜?
Hi Sylvie and Welcome! Absolutely not, you're never too old! Make sure you buy the right horse for you and one that is safe!
What do you do when you want to buy a foal?
+PonyparkcityJans lovertuh Hi PonyPark and Welcome! When
purchasing foals, there are a few key areas to focus on. The most obvious
problem will involve leg abnormalities. These can include contracted tendons,
toeing out, toeing in, over at the knees (bucked knees), back at the knees
(calf knees) and cow hocks. Some foals will correct themselves before they are
3 months of age and that is why I like to wait until the foal is older, stronger
and able to run and gain muscle. If the hind leg is long that is also a good
inclination that the foal will be tall. It’s also easy to tell the confirmation
of a foal when they are just a few months old - after they have gained muscle.
I like to see a round topline meaning the foals neck, from the pole, to the
wither is round, not sunken in or hollow. A round topline tells me how easy it
will be for the foal to “come through,” reach and bend when traveling. This is
important to both dressage and reining, having a confirmation that allows the
horse to move fluidly, naturally, and carry themselves with balance. Of course
bloodlines dictate many of the physical and mental traits. Knowing the sire and
dam will help you understand the foal’s temperament and physical agility,
abilities.Warmly, Caroline
If you can't pay for a vet you probably shouldn't be buying a horse...

No such thing as left brain/right brain
Hi D and Welcome! Yes, there is. Here's the science. Dr. Steve Peterswww.horsebrainscience.info
An evidence-based approach to horsemanship involves assessing and integrating scientific findings to inform decisions and create best practices in horsemanship.
@@TaoofHorsemanship Im sorry, it's a myth
@@dshe8637 Hi D! Sorry, but your wrong. I've trained and re-trained thousands of horses developing their left brain so they think more vs react (right brain controls their instincts, sensory processing and self preservation). I've also written published articles about this. While there is still very little to support it, both Dr Peters and me and the few out there know it to be true and will continue to educate those who are willing, and ready, to listen and work with horses with this level of understanding.
This horse is disrespecting her, it's taken it's attention from her, is eating and she allows it!
