  • Offshore Sailing Tips - Storms at Sea ,Tame the Autopilot + Mainsail Battens - Patrick Childress Sailing Videos #38
    Sailing around the World, blue water sailing through the Mozambique Channel from Bazaruto to South Africa, avoiding storms and squalls, but still sailing in rough seas and rough weather. Our Old Mainsail dies and we bend on a new main sail. We struggle with a Dangerous Anchorage and leave in a storm..in to the storm at sea that we were trying to avoid. One can never avoid storms in Africa altogether! ! Making sailing videos in good and bad weather has just become part of our sailing life on this circumnavigation. Patrick Childress shows how to adjust the autopilot sensitivity, and why he does not put a Mainsail up when sailing with the winds, and why we chose partial battens vs full battens in the mainsail. Adjusting the autopilot is a simple adjustment for most autopilots.This is more than a sailing blog...it’s a Sailboat how to channel...Sailboat DIY...showing how to handle rough weather on our yacht, how to sail in general, and Sailing in storms and sailing in heavy weather while you circumnavigate, and other offshore sailing tips.

I only sailed as kid... but dropped out cause the Captain was a big ego "blow hard" I find this everytime I climb on board........ though one guy was a "busybody" but he was cool about it though , now I understand why....looking back on it we were getting blown faaaaaar from land..going back was all uphill). I was a dumb kid.... now I am a dumb adult....

    Great episode Patrick. A number of people criticize me for dropping the main when running downwind in high winds. I completely agree with your headsail only strategy. A great lesson in seamanship. Thanks

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад +4

      Patrick, can you imagine the forces needed to break the boom of a Swan 48? I know someone who did that because they insisted on using he main as the primary driver in strong wind and seas, then gybed. Another captain, in similar conditions ripped out the traveler when they gybed. As the life long sailor and boat guru, Bill Seifert, says, "It is easier to pull a boat than to push it." Anyone who still believes the words of the sailing instructor on that first day of sailing class "The main is the first sail up and the last sail down." has not learned how to deal with sailing beyond the bay on a pleasant day. Thanks for watching, Patrick.

    What a wealth of REAL sailing advice. I have searched through too many RUclips pages created by green sailors who simply don't know what they don't know. As a merchant marine Captain, and more importantly as a yachtie, I am concerned that they will eventually have to learn the hard way. You two are clearly and obviously experienced world cruisers. They should all watch your channel as it may save their life some day.
    Your approach to safety and the maintenance schedule you have in place along with your voyage planning, should serve as an example for all sailors regardless of the length of their wake. For me, you have provided validation to 3 issues I have been crewing on for my Morgan 43, they being Iridium Go/Predict Wind, backstay isolators and the best way to set up bilge pumps on a sailboat of this size. And I find myself taking notes during your videos. Just terrific info here. I look forward to your next video knowing it can only make me, and everyone else for that matter, a better sailor. Fair Winds, Capt Bill

    Patrick. Of all the cruisers doing videos, yours are by far the best and most informative. I spent a year cruising the Mexico Pacific coast many years ago in a 30 ft. sloop, and thought I did very well with planning, maintenance, sail management, and navigation in the days before the electronic tools were so widely available. But after seeing your videos, I now realize I was often lucky rather than skillful. I really admire how thoughtful and cautious on your adventure cruise. It's an inspiration, and a pleasure to watch.

    I just bought some chain at Maggi, USA and to my surprise saw a drum labelled Brickhouse. Man, I wish I would have been prepared. I could only grab a couple of Misc things from my truck tool box to add to the drum. Its so cool to communicate and ship stuff that far. First time buying Italian chain so I was reassured if you bought it, then my research was on the mark and I would be ok with my purchase. Preston was great to deal with and very helpfull. Looking forward to yall opening up that drum.

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад +1

      Small world :) Thanks in advance for whatever you popped in there!
      Yes...we just could not find chain in SE Asia before we left last year that was of the quality that is tough enough for our demands. Our old, old chain is SSOO at the end of its life. In this very video, you saw the anchorage just before it got dark and started to get VERY bumpy...dangerously bumpy, considering this old chain we have. That’s when we decided we would go NO further with the current chain, and would wait for a drum to be sent to Richards Bay in South Africa before anchoring anywhere again. We have been in contact with Maggi Chain USA for more than a year, and it was time to do it! I can’t tell you how much research I did, and , yes...I think you and we have made a very good decision with Maggi! (Rebecca)

    Nicely done - knowing when to go and when to stay. I learnt an early lesson in sailing when we booked a flight for one day after we planned our return from a summer cruise up the coast. Yeah you know what’s coming...and so should have I. The weather was fowl, 30 gusting 35 on the nose, and a sea perfectly tuned to our boat length such that we slammed back through every wave and every mile! Needless to say that never happened again. : /

      We know South African cruisers who say they don't just have stories about sailing the E. African coast, they have horror stories. But just like Cape Hatteras, it can get rough but there is not a constant storm. Watch the weather reports and the greatest majority will do fine. …...I hope that statement holds true for us!

    I think a high pressure system coming across the cape of good hope will produce the north easterly winds needed to push you south. My understanding of it is after a low pressure system flows north up the channel toward Madagascar it will be followed by a high pressure system that will cause the current and the wind to shift to favor sailing south.
    My Mainsail does not have full battens.
    I also like sailing downwind without the main when the wind picks up. It just feels right.

    Wow! What a nostalgia trip for anyone sailing out of Richards Bay to Inhaca Island or Durban and back.
    Memories brought back...
    * threading through the channels (bah! Humbug!) at Inhaca at night in the days before GPS and a dodgy echo sounder (I just crew - go ask the skipper)
    * Those frigging southwesters. Even heading north they are a pain...
    * The anchorage at Inhaca in a (guess?) southwester. I still can't jog due to a fall crunching my
    L5/S1 disc in ±1995
    * Trying to get past St Lucia going south against the counter current in a mild southwester (in a race so no starting the donk). And the same going north with a northeastern. Stood still doing 4½ knots through the water for nigh on 60 hours!
    * Prawns at Lucas's at Inhaca

    Hi Patric, Have you ever tried to use the “response setting” instead of the rudder Gain? I have always been using the response setting on the Raymarine to achieve what you do with the rudder gain. Will try your method when I’m back on the boat.

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад

      Maybe this is something new to me. Isn't this the same but different terms? So on your control head, you can go to either "response" or "gain"? How would you get to "response"? What is the difference?

    • @a2022z2
      @a2022z2 5 лет назад

      Patrick Childress Sailing I’m sure Raymarine have many versions. I have the 400G course computer. On my autopilot Gain controls maximum rudder angle when executing a course change. Response controls the deadband port/SB and amount of drive activity. To access response menu I press -1/+1 button until I get to response menu. I normally use response 5 when I want active steering and 3 when on the ocean.

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад

      I just checked the manual, and there, Raymarine calls it Response Level, but on the control head it is called Rudder Gain. I redid the whole voice over for that section as I was calling it Response Rate but then it did not look right, when in the video, it showed up as Rudder Gain, on the control head. As shown in the video, push both the -1 and +1 at the same time and "Rudder Gain" comes up. Same same.

The ex got the house 15 feet from the neighbor and kept the soul crushing corporate job because he enjoyed that kind of thing. I got the depreciating asset (happily), and kept working my soul crushing job. The ex and I had bought the boat when I had decided I wanted to go cruising someday soon...but when he decided, after 15 years of working towards that goal, that it wasn’t something he wanted to do...well...you know. So Patrick has a running joke that he talks about in that video...that he got lucky..got a girl with a boat etc...but that he has been fixing it ever since...which is pretty much the bottom line of it all! That is a wad of modeling clay. In comfortable temperatures, it works great. When the temperatures turn very chilly, the clay hardens up a bit too much. Nigell, if you mean the gain, so it does not hold quite a tight course and overwork the autopilot, yes, I lower the gain all the time from the default 5 to 3 and sometimes 2, when it is really rough and we are not using the Monitor self steering vane. Well offshore, we normally use the Monitor and close to shore, the autopilot. Close to shore, we don't need the Monitor to follow an unexpected wind shift and head us into shallow water.

    When you go forward to change sails in rough seas are you clipped on or do you wake your crew? Or is this unrealistic as you have to go forward so often?

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад +3

      Dale86, in editing the video, I purposely wanted to avoid any discussion about tethers so kept my on deck presence short and at a distance. But since you asked. In most weather, I feel perfectly comfortable working around the deck uninhibited and without being tripped up by a tether. Tethers can cause a lot of trouble and become dangerous. However, when the waves are washing over the deck and the weather is at a certain intensity, I will use the safety back up of a tether. I have spent a lot of years working construction hanging off of high scaffolding and 42 foot ladders and working on high roofs of buildings. I have done a lot of high speed snow skiing and other things that make working around the deck of a bouncing boat, at sea, seem far safer. I generally want to avoid opinionating about tethers as that is an individual choice on what one feels most comfortable doing. Long ago I spent 3 years sailing around the world by myself so I still have a carryover from that life style which keeps me in the solo sailor attitude of just going forward and doing what needs to be done, so I don't see any reason to wake Rebecca when I need to tend to the boat. I feel perfectly comfortable doing what I do. In the old days, we always had to go forward since sails were hanked on. Today, there is far less need to go forward due to roller furling. Much less exciting sailing these days but much easier and comfortable.

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад +1

      It has always taken me so many sentences to express what you just said in a few words. I will change it a little to say " Fall protection can cause more of a safety problem than be a solution." That is how many experienced sailors view harnesses and jack lines. Of course there is a time when the weather becomes so bad and dangerous, that the equipment is a valuable safety item. Thanks for your helpful comment.

    Do you have a boom-brake for broad reaches or do you use protector lines?

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад +2

      We do not have a boom brake. I rarely see one out here on a long range cruising sailboat. We use a preventer tied to a side deck cleat. I watched a video recently about a couple crossing the Atlantic. The wind was off the quarter and they had far too much main sail up for the conditions. When they accidentally jibed, the boom brake was so overwhelmed, the traveler was ripped out of the boat. A lone jib would have kept them moving at hull speed without the danger and damage of a jibe. A commenter on this video said that in similar, strong wind, conditions, when they jibed, the line on their boom brake broke. Certainly the boom brakes are adjustable, as the person in the video did not have enough wraps on the preventer drum for the conditions. The commenter went on to say they upsized the boom brake line. In the, off the quarter, wind conditions, they would have had a much better sail by flying a lone jib and dumping the main.

    Off topic but what did you do to get the Juggernaut (Catalina 27) ready for circumnavigation?

    • @RVLifeNOW
      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад

      There is a very long list which is in John Vigor's book, "20 Small Boats That Will Get You Anywhere". (amzn.to/2QcrgLf) Two of the most important items were to increase cockpit drainage. That Catalina had more cockpit drainage, by adding 4 drains out the vertical stern of the cockpit, than our Valiant 40 has. Increasing drainage on our V40 was one of the first things I did to this boat and is shown in the first Valiant Tour video. The second most important thing on the C-27 was changing the aft lower shrouds from deck plates to hull mounted chain plates. The side decks were not strong enough to carry the loads, in heavy weather, even though I had doubled the square area and thickness of the stainless deck plates. In the Catalina, there was also a high water, electric, emergency, bilge pump similar to what is installed on out V40. Maybe, one day, I will put the list up on our blog site. Do you have a C-27?

      Thanks Darco, for the link. What that owner is doing seems to be working for him. The other day, on a Face Book sailing site, someone posted pictures of the bottom of their fiberglass boat. There was a streak of burn mark, emanating from a thruhull , outwards in 2 directions for about a foot. "Lightening strike" is what the general assessment was for the cause of the marks. In the video link, I do like their idea of a much larger copper sheet to dissipate a charge coming from their mast. So maybe it is better to use a prop shaft strut over a thru hull for grounding, because of its larger wetted surface. In a different direction, she said something about using LanaCote monthly on their Marelon valves. LanaCote might, initially, look and feel greasy, but when it dries, it is an anti grease. I found out the hard way when I "greased" up my bow roller shaft with LanaCote. The roller would not roll and the chain just wore a deeper grove in the plastic roller as the anchor went down and as the anchor chain came up. I had to saturate the roller shaft with WD40 to get the roller to spin. Finally I was in a place I could take the roller apart and clean it up to remove the Lanacote!

      @RVLifeNOW  5 лет назад +3

      This is Rebecca...Yes...Cyclone Idai is the one we left Dar and Mtwara in a hurry to, to try to follow it down, which worked great...we had north winds for the first 800-1000 miles all the way down to Bazaruto.....where this video picks up. That cyclone hit only 100 miles NW of here, so we would have liked to have left Bazaruto sooner but had constant S winds for 9 days...we needless to say kept a very good eye on what what happening near Mayotte in case another started taking off...in which case we would have left against the south winds, to beat the cyclone! Here is that video: ruclips.net/video/ZrGMIlweQAo/видео.html
      After leaving Bazaruto we just had the normal southerlies barreling up the coast one after another. Then the storm that hit Durban came a week after we arrived in Richards Bay. Funny, 80 miles north and we saw nothing out of the ordinary here. Then Cyclone Kenneth hit Mozambique again, a little further north. Hopefully that’s about the end of it. Definitely it was a calculated risk heading towards it..but we were ready to deal with the consequences...but luckily it didn’t come to that!
      So long story short...yes we are fine...had a great sail...with the exception of about 2 hours just above Bazaruto, and 6 hours out of Inhaca (when we left the 2nd anchorage in this video in the storm...and even that was fine, just not sunny fairweather Sailing which is my favorite ;)
