#bathurst1000 - Спорт
When a crowd was THAT disrespectful, no-one should blame Jim Richards for what he said. It's just ludicrous.
1000% agree, remember the race well. If it was me they were booing like that for absolutely no reason my words wouldn't have not been as kind as Jim Richards. Down right un-Australian to carry on like that just because you don't like the rules that were in place before the race started.
Booing is ok, but throwing things? That's too much. Imagine someone decided to throw a rock instead of small items.
@@takumifujiwara13954 booing is not OK, no one is forcing you to clap or cheer for the winners, but booing is downright disrespectful. I miss the days when that kind of behavior would have earned you a punch in the face. People think they can do anything these days and they don't need to be responsible for their actions.
@@takumifujiwara13954someone did in 1980
@@DodgyBrothersEngineeringso booing is not OK, but punching someone in the face is.
Riiiight.
Fun Fact: Jim Richards drove every Bathurst 1000 from 1974 to 2006. He still holds the record for most Bathurst starts and he won 7 of them in 4 decades, winning for 4 manufactures and even raced with his son to finish second in the race.
The saddest part of this race outcome was most people either forgot or didn't know the Denny Hulme passed away.
Don't know the driver myself as 1992 was before my aliving but I feared that happened when I heard it in the video.
RIP
I was aware his passed away during a Touring car race, but never knew it was the Bathurst 1000.
RIP Denny
@@curledone7947he was the 1967 F1 champion, a highly esteemed driver by any metric.
Yeah nah, they to drunk to give a rat's, mate. Didn't you see them throwing their own grog away? Whenever Australian's start hurling perfectly consumable alcohol at people, you should KNOW that that's a "declaration of War," anytime.
@@M2orNot Where was he from, do you know?
I really hate tribalism in sport. Even when it’s mild it’s still toxic as hell. The crowd that day had no good reason for hurling that kind of abuse at those drivers. Jim was absolutely justified in saying what he said.
He let the crowd off easy, lets be honest.
It wasn’t tribalism
The Datsun had hit the wall & was out of the race / till the stewards decided to put the Datsun back in
This is WHY Micheal Masi made his decision at the Dhabi F1 race < & WHY I fully Support Micheal
@@BDCMattwell there would have been a different outcome had Micheal Masi been in charge
I think this is the race that formed Masi future decision as far as Dhabi F1 race went
@@johnmuller5342a car hitting the wall almost 30 years before the 21 race had zero impact on his decision. He openly admitted he thought that word would spread world wide in a matter of minutes and everyone would drop everything to watch the race. At least that's the excuse he gave. What he told his bosses got him sacked
I agree
Reportedly upon winning in 2002, Jim said to the crowd from the podium, "you're a pack of lovely, lovely people", which is a nice touch.
I think James Moffat said that too when he finished 2nd for Nissan in 2014.
Actually I have a funny story with Jim's son Steve. First time I met him was back in 2007 at the Gold Coast, him and his then team mate Mark Winterbottom walked past and I said "G'day guys, good luck for the weekend" Winterbottom thanked me, Steve was in a world of his own and misheard me and thought I said something mean to him so he started to yell a bit of trash at me. Frosty put his hand on him and said "Mate, the guy is just saying hello and wishing the best" and we all walked away. A day or two later, Steve walked past me again, he remembered me, stopped me and apologised profusely. Genuinely good friends with him these days alongside his kids Clay and Priya (we race iRacing together) and got to know Jim to a degree. We all have a good laugh at this "incident" these days.
Haha I wanna know what he said 🤪
@@PriyaRichards Hey Priya, good to see ya! If memory serves, your Dad pretty much yelled "Get fucked" or something to that affect. Frosty kinda held him back because it looked like if he had half a chance, would've gone to fists. (he thought I called him a c-bomb and a few other slurs because we were not far from the track and the ChampCars were running so was a little hard to hear at times) Fortunately after Frosty explained I was just being polite and we ran into each other the next day, he was very apologetic. (plus scored a free FPR cap signed by the guys) We shared a few laughs over it.
Hope you and the family are good, be awesome to catch up sometime soon or see you and Clay on iRacing alongside my partner Hannah. - Greg
Bathurst races deserve so much more attention, unfortunate send-off for the GTR

Richo said that the following year when they were driving Holdens, he signed t-shirts that said, “I’m an asshole, Jim Richards told me.” 😂
god I love this sport some much
Fun fact: On that podium in 2002, Jim Richards proceeded to call the crowd "A pack of...lovely, lovely people" 🥰
That's great
Gentlemen
I love how his teammate looks at him while he switches up his tone in the interview like „oh you doing this“. Makes it even funnier because he told him before to keep a cool head and than flips out himself 😂. Understandable tho
Something tells me Jim did that because Skaife was young at the time; it's easier for higher ups to fuck with a young gun's career than someone who's been in the sport for a long time, so Jim took the heat and repercussions because ultimately the consequences for him would be *very* temporary, being touted as a legend of the sport even at that time
a driver calling drunk fans " a pack of assholes & mongrels " on live TV then the fans making t-shirts for the next year saying "I'm a asshole ,Jim Richards told me " is the most Australian thing I can ever imagine
Watching Denny Hulme come to a fading halt was a sad moment. Took some time to understand what was happening, but then ..
Thank you Josh
I remember watching it live, we thought he had a mechanical failure or something like that. I'm glad he was able to get off the track without a terrible accident. He was a legend.
@@BrickNewton absolutely. It didn’t seem like any kin of crash that would cause injury, so we were stunned to see medical staff attending. A great driver from an era of greats.
For those not in the know, the reason the GTR was classed as the winner was because as per the rules the race was back dated to the start of the previous lap from the red flag, which was before the GTR had even had his first crash at the cutting and thus was still ahead by a full lap.
Nah good on him for not apologising. He didn't make the call to declare who won or lost. Hardly his fault was it and he responded in kind.

No but seriously how fkn good was Jim Richards, NZ’s GOAT of the ATCC
For the comparable size of populations, NZ has been disproportionately and incredibly successful in the ATCC
I think possibly GOAT of all time as far as touring car racing goes.
@@cappo_nzNZ seems to have an extremely high percentage of racers vs population. I have never raced anything since i started that didn't have fast Kiwis in the field, and even some Kiwis you've never even heard of could have been among the best anywhere.

@@cappo_nz It's disingenuous to claim some nationalism. It's an Australian series that gives talented kiwis a chance.
You could do a story on the Murphy / Ambrose or Ingall / Skaife rivalries. V8 Supercars is full of material.
Fun fact to remember: At the next year's 1993 Bathurst 1000, Richards was greeted at the track by a group of fans wearing shirts that said "I'm an arsehole, Jim Richards told me so". Thankfully he saw the funny side
And the 2022 race had people wearing shirts that said "30 years ago Jim Richards called me an arsehole". Gotta love the sport.
Honestly we need more drivers to be honest and tell it how it is to a toxic crowd when things get to a distasteful low.
Unlikely these days when everyone is walking on eggshells determined not to offend the over sensitive mob.
And whenever they do, they get instant clap back from those saying it's not good enough. It's a lose-lose situation in that sense.
We need more drivers to be honest and tell it like it is* full stop.
Too bad personality is suppressed, either by the corporate gestapo, or the horde of Twitter witch hunters.
I see Josh Revell, I click. I see car, i happy. Especially if it's something like the GTR

Fantastic video, truly captured the essence of the 92' Podium. The '90s were a golden era for Bathurst indeed! Would love to see a video on Peter Brock, dubbed the 'King of the Mountain,' maybe on how he secured his record-breaking ninth and final Bathurst win in 1987, a feat that I still think about often. Truly, an era of legends and nail-biting races! 👏🏁
i really love these kind of videos you do, with random stories outside F1, it's a good thing a youtube channels gives a damn about motorsport not only F1
KInd of wild that they asked Jim to apologise, because in a way its like asking him to apologise for winning.
You know for a laugh he should have done that just to rub their noses in it. “I’m sorry you are assholes, I’m sorry we were too good, I’m sorry we won.....by a full lap, Thankyou very much assholes” and walks off.

Pls do more content on Australian touring cars / V8s etc, it’s an uptapped goldmine
I think it'd be cool if you did a collaboration with S1apsh0es to talk about a subject he has spent a lot of time talking about, the 1969 Talladega 500, the very first NASCAR race to be held at Talladega. Boy! The behind the scenes goings on that weekend made what happened in this Bathurst race Denny Hulme passed away seem tame by comparison. At first, I thought it was the NASCAR equivalent to the 2005 US Grand Prix, but that doesn't even do justice for it as a comparison. Heck, you didn't see Paul Stoddart giving Max Mosley a knuckle sandwich did you??
Hostility, Bathurst, and absolute chaos all in one video... I love it. Absolutely love it. Another banger of a video Josh 👏 👏 👏
Idk about you right but Australian motorsports seems like an undiscovered gold mine of iconic moments and content.
Josh: "How many times have you seen fans hurling stuff at the drivers?"
Me, a NASCAR fan: "Well.....where do we start with that one?"
Talladega 1994, Daytona 2002 and Talladega 2004 come to mind.
Reminds me of Jeff Gordon winning at Talladega in 2004... albeit there were A LOT more beer cans thrown at Jeff.
The fans needed that call
A race marred with the death of a legend. Shame that the podium become that hostile
You spelled 'A-hole crowd with no respect' wrong for podium. Shame them not the damn drivers.
Perfectly understandable reaction from Richards, even middle of the road if consider that a race result will not affect you in any way besides the ones you already decided for yourself, but for him it was a race a friend died and one with multiple accidents that could've been fatal, the "fans" didn't show any respect, why should've he?
There are three things guaranteed in life:
1) Death
2) Taxes
3) A Nissan Skyline R32 GTR hitting a barrier
Bakazato moment
Another absolute top class video. Total Ford fan but Jim Richards will always be a legend. Can drive anything. RIP Denny.
I remember watching Jim Richards as a kid, racing in the black BMWs, around Amaroo Park and Oran Park. I thought they were the coolest cars.
Just wanna say thank you. Im somewhat newish F1 fan, but when I get into something I dive deep and have learned a lot pretty quickly, but your videos, even the F1 related ones teach me something new and interesting everytime. Admittedly, Im solely a F1 fan, but I really do appreciate the great and captivating videos on motor racing as a whole. Just like the F1 content, I learn a ton about some really interesting racing series, people, tracks and so much more through your content. In my opinion, some of the best racing content on RUclips. The quality is unparralled, the way you tell the stories is unique but clearly exudes the passion behind it. Thanks again for the amazing content, I think its fair to say I, and everyone subscribed look forward to your videos.
For Bathurst 50th I was there, Jim went around on a truck with dicky Johnson , I yelled out hey Jim I’m still a arse hole, he laughed so did the crowd
I loved those R32 GTR's in the early 90's, found memories as a kid watching them tear up the mountain.
I'll never forget watching that - truly astounding at the time. I would LOVE to see someone graft the audio of what Jim said over a vid of a current F1 podium for a laugh :)
For anyone who doesn't know the rules. Whenever a race gets declared mid way through due to race incidents, weather or time. The officials will go back to the last completed lap. Whatever your position was that last lap was where you finished. This rule has been around for a very long time and the vast majority of other motorsport disciplines use that exact same rule.
As Clarkson said. Bathurst is where Ford and holden fans have a fight as a motor race happens
ever saw the final race of the BTCC (British touring car championship) in 1992? that race is worth a video ;)
man i love this dude josh you are a legend man much love 💙
Bro lost a friend that day and got insults hurled at him? Yeah, he's fine in my book.
Damn Josh pumping out content, love it!
I remember being at Clipsal in 2010 looking at the touring car masters and looking at Jim richards car. I was 7 at the time had no idea who the guy was just thought the car looked cool. I remember him coming up to me grabbing a poster and signing it for me, dad was shocked to find his kid that he thought was lost was with a Bathurst legend getting a poster signed. Life long fan after that
shortest Josh Revell video ever. Still very unique, niche, insightful. Lends perspective to modern motorsport atmosphere.
Of course the next year, fans approached Richards wearing T-Shirts branded "I'm an Asshole, Jim Richards told me so". Jim saw the funny side and signed them as he and Skaife finished 2nd to Larry Perkins and the late Gregg Hansford
Owning it with the videos lately. Keep it up!
In a throwback when a Nissan next found it’s way to the Bathurst Podium the driver James Moffat came out and told the crowd ‘You’re a pack of really nice people’ 😂
5:14 on the Podium, after winning... Getting Booed like Prime Vettel.. Damn.
Appreciate this short and sweet vid
Another chapter of The Great Race to be written this weekend! Great video.
People completely misunderstand what went on here. The fans trackside saw the Nissan crash, and Dick Johnson drive past it. (You seem to have forgotten to mention that bit)
The vast majority going to the presentation were expecting Johnson to have won the race. To have the race win handed to the driver who had crashed was a shock, to put it mildly.
(I was actually there, didn't go to the presentation, but headed back toward home thinking that Johnson had won the race.)
This was the first race I ever watched as a kid. It made me love motorsport. Though I was too young and new to motorsport to understand why the fans hated the GTR. It's funny how a couple of decades later, Holden doesn't exist, we don't even have an "Australian" Ford and the Nissan GTR a legend.
Those Holdens and Ford were lucky they didnt face against the GTR again during the mid 90s🤣
True fans of a sport value and revere the winners. Things like Bathurst just bring out the idiotic, Neanderthal side of Australians who don't care about the racing, they just want to borrow a bit of glory from people who actually achieve something, just to make up for their pointless, shitty lives. It's the same with footy and other sports.
I quote this almost every day.
Just an iconic Bathurst moment
Richards and Tarquini in a saloon car shootout would be epic, both masters of touring cars and very popular. I can imagine Edd Straw getting so excited that he started vibrating
Edit: guys stop being dicks about Edd, you're sounding like a pack of arseholes
Look up '95-'99 Bathurst SuperTourers. Ex-BTCC race cars at Bathurst with a mix of supercars and Euro racers of the time including Richards.
That would cause a tsunami.
Edd Straw vibrating can trigger volcanic activity and cause Eurasian Plate to subduct under North American Plate.
More like blobbing 😁
This is like every Sunday for Denny Hamlin😂
Exactly what I was thinking 😂😂😂
I love stuff like this, keep em coming…
You really undersold the reaction of the crowd. They were BAYING for blood.
I was a kid and was shocked by what Jim said but certainly understood why he'd said it. I was 1000klms away, watching it all on TV, and I was scared for them.
(i was in Bathurst a coupe of weeks ago and, while at the Motorsport Museum that is beside the track, took a photo of the car (which is on display) and sent it to my Brother-in-law, who is a skyline fan boy, with the caption, "you're a pack of arseholes". We both had a laugh and chatted about the race in the resultant phone conversation and we found out, to both our surprise, that my sister was clueless....... she has since been schooled. )
I guess at the time it was unusual but this happens in NASCAR all the time.
This kind of thing is what made me like Kyle Busch. Regardless of his driving and attitude, the bow gained a lot of respect from me. It was his way of basically telling the crowd he enjoyed the hate. And I loved seeing that bow to a roar of boos
@tylercady3985 there was one time when he was introduced to a loud jeering crowd, and, seeing this, he walked over to the microphone and shouted "If you love you some Rowdy [His nickname], let me hear you go BOOOOOOO!"
@alctheblade8124 I remember that it was the all star race driver intros I think
Edit: I was very wrong. It was Bristol 2021. Not an all star race and not even the right track as that year's all star race was at Texas
Jim was correct in calling them idiots. The best car won. as for holden being ford, the BMW e30, in a different class was almost quicker. Going from Group a to Holfords/Foldens was the death of bathurst for me in australia.
Heard many stories about Jim Richards from my granddad, who used to be a race marshal in Auckland. He sounded like such an awesome guy. Don't blame him at all for what he said in '92.
In my opinion, Jim Richards was right.
Funny thing is, in the intervening years rev heads in Australia have come to love the Nissan GTR's. In fact a GTR of that series goes for a high price these days. The old rivalry Ford?Holden was fun, but I really like the fact that car enthusiasts these days have the blinkers off largely and appreciate all the paths you can take to go fast.
Plus the GT-R brand outlived both Ford Australia and Holden (the last GT-Rs rolled off the lines in 2022).
I knew about Richards' speech, but I wasn't aware of what 'Crompo' did.. legend! 😂
As a fan from philadelphia, this seems very tame
I watched this race as a kid, and it was the GOAT of all motorsport races.
I was there as a kid! The number 76 Toyota ae86 flipping is his car!
The best winners speech at the Mountain, ever... and I disliked the GTR at the time, but loved Jim's honesty.
The GTR won biggest the track was wet :p
The rules for deciding the finishing order under a red flag are usually well-defined. Just because the lead car crashed on the last lap but the race was called off as of the previous lap doesn't disqualify that car, if for no other reason because it was running when the race officially ended.
One of the most beautiful cars ever made. The GOAT-R
The irony is the GTR was more Australian than the car they wanted to win lol
Really was looking forward to hearing ypur Interpretation of the rules and who you though won the race
Fun fact - Skaife loaded up the pockets of his jacket with cans of Tooheys before going onto the podium, to throw at the crowd, but Jim talked him out of it. He wrote it in his book
I remember that day. I was watching the race and I saw the cutaway to Denny Hulme's car at the side of the road. I think that they announced over the broadcast that he had passed away, but I remember that it was one of the first times that I felt a massive shiver run up my spine.
The right team won. Like it or not, the GTRs were a great car and it was up to the others to work out how to beat them. The crown was...... unfortunate and Jim's response was perfect. I totally agreed.
When I first saw the thumbnail I was like IS THAT TOM HANKS?!
Between Jim’s character reference towards that mob and Crompo flipping off the crowd, I’d say I’m amazed it didn’t get even nastier.
At 2.00 with the marshal holding out the Red flag, I’d never noticed that flash of lightning before.
I can imagine Lewis Hamilton fanboys after abu dhabi 2021 beeing like this. They even wrote death treaths to latifi.
I'm a fan of this guy just for this alone, never heard of him before, but now I love him

Did anybody else hear someone call Gounon and Marcichello a "Pack of assholes " when they were on the podium at Bathurst earlier this year? Funny
Issue with sound through my PC, so haven't heard anything yet of this vid.
Only I can think of regarding 1992 and Bathurst, regretfully, is the passing of great kiwi driver Denny Hulme - R.I.P.
He should've been much more recognized as a great champion here in Europe, as I myself grew up with motorsport in the 70s and 80s, but many of my friends unfortunately forgot him in the ranks of champions from the golden era.
Will watch again when I get sound signal on my PC, otherwise rewatch on my LG C2 YT app or tablet tonite.
