Yes they used a fn mag 7,62mm machine gun from the heli for suppressing fire while fast roping. And I think it's a marsof unit or what they used to call BBE. Hardcore marines. Helicopter is a cougar and there's a frigate next to this cargo vessel. And that is very intimidating. It's not dsi cause dsi have blue nh-90's and do not operate on anti piracy missions. This is navy.

Really nice video! Most of the dutch commentary is describing what's happening in the video so you didn't miss much.
The sound you hear in the helicopter is suppressive fire from the machinegun, you can see the windows of the bridge are full of holes when they clear it later in the video, but it doesn't seem like the pirates shot at the boarding team.
The wire is a pretty standard anti-piracy measure that merchant vessels can take, other options are using fixed water cannons around the ship to try and flood approaching boats and locking the pirate cages (metal gates) that are meant to slow pirates down and buy time for the crew to get in the saferoom.
When they're clearing the crew quarters the narrator mentions that the pirates thrashed the place, kicked in doors, and even shot through some doors they couldn't open.
He also mentions that the pirates were armed but had thrown down their weapons. And yes they are as rusty on the inside as the outside, seawater makes things corrode and rust pretty quick.
He also says that the merchant vessel's captain got out of the saferoom with his crew, they explained their operation and got applauded.

    • @wyldz6763
      @wyldz6763 2 года назад +15

I sadly don't speak Dutch but I have worked with sea freight for a decade and it is nowdays (after these issues especially) quite common practise for the crew to bail inside a "panic room" or seal off a section of the vessel which is unaccessible without heavy duty cutting tools, so any friendlys can basically assume that there are no blues in sight and light up the place. With any luck the captain can make the request for military assistance call in good time and the crew can move to holding positions without being exposed to a hostile party. This might have come up already in other comments so sorry if I'm repeating other things!
Edit: there are a lot of things to unpack here but of course the level of information would dictate the approach that the boarding party takes, as you know, so this is why there is the suppressive fire etc. It would be very rare for a ship to be taken totally unguarded. The captain would give a call for support (or whoever is senior on the bridge, they would give their best info) and there is always crew performing visual watch, maybe even double so for visibility in high risk areas.

What he says... merchant vessels indeed use c-wire as you call it more difficult for the pirates to board the ship. You see that quite often.

Here's some explanation about the video (as someone who speaks Dutch):
1:53 - 2:01 Somalia 5th of April 2010: the German merchant ship Taipan is freed from pirates by Hr. Ms. Tromp. The team commander of the boarding team explains the images which where shot by body cam during the action.
2:15 - 2:45 10 pirates are on board, they have commandeered the ship. There are 15 crewmembers who have locked themself safely inside a safe room below deck.
3:00 - 3:45 Giving suppressive fire with the machine gun, to safely allow the team to repel down.
4:05 - 4:12 You can see the Hr. Ms. Tromp in the background.
4:18 - 5:05 Giving suppressive fire again, this time by the units on the ship itself.
5:06 - 5:40 These barbed wires are installed by the crew of the ship (or company/ safety team, whoever is responsible for crew safety), in order to slow down or even prevent pirates from entering the ship. A very common practise for commercial ship passing through those waters.
5:55 - 7:40 the soldier/ marine is trying to detain 6 pirates. They say they hand cuff them and secure them. Later on 2 more came from the stern of the ship, who where also detained.
7:43 - 9:00 The last 2 pirates are detained coming down from the bridge. That's now all 10 pirates accounted for. They then go on to clear the rest of the ship to be sure.
9:52 - 10:45 the living quarters have been thrashed by the pirates, including broken in doors, laptops on the ground, shot through doors. They say its been 4 hours since the pirates boarded the ship.
10:50 - 11:06 The pirates where armed, and dropped all there weapons on the spot. Weapons varied from rpg's, rpg-7's, ak-47's and pistols.
11:08 - 11:30 The German captain decided to open the doors (of the safe room) and came outside with his crew, they were very relieved. They were brought to the port side of the stern and briefed of what took place.

I think mostly they just pay the pirates and don't even try to get them, not to endanger hostages, but in this case there weren't really hostanges I guess. But like these guys often have RPGs, so I wouldn't feel very safe approaching there with a helicopter lol. Ships going thru these waters should just have some real soldiers on board to protect the ship, like with rifles or other means to prevent pirates of getting close to the ship & boarding it.

Vessels often rig concertina wire around the gunwales when entering piracy hazard regions; it’s one of the basic anti-boarding measures (that as we see here doesn’t always work), along with things like fire hoses, armed security teams and so on.

It doesn't need to conclusively stop them (though armed security certainly will) - the main aim is to make the vessel a harder target and affect the pirates' target selection.
After all, why attack a ship with thousands of people aboard, a high freeboard, concertina on the gunwales and an LRAD on the bridge wings when one can aim for a less defended rather instead?
Piracy is a business, and they do the cost-benefit calculations like anyone else.

    - The fire from the helicopter and just after landing was cover fire. They weren't actually engaging, but suppressing while fast-roping in
    - There were 6 pirates found on the bottom deck (6:40), they made them climb out of the window
    - They found a total of 10 pirates, which were aboard for ~4 hours, in which time the pirates ravaged the crew quarters
    - The ship was German and was freed by a Dutch team as there was a ship close by

1:26 "het korps mariniers" is literally, as the name suggests, the Dutch marine corps. Maybe they have an intervention unit, idk

might sound a bit like drunk english because definately in the last decades we implement a lot of english in the language. and some people often mix the 2 while not being good english speakers. so the english parts in sentences will be with a very heavy dutch accent. i honestly get a little frustrated when people do this. just either talk english or stay with dutch. mixing while sounding like they try to speak english while sounding dutch makes me cringe so hard

You should have a look at Simple History's Battle of Mirbat (9 SAS Soldiers VS 300 Adoo Guerrillas). It's one of the most important battles in the SAS's history. And Labalaba should have recieved the the Victoria Cross

The barbed wires are anti pirate measures. Ships also mount up fire hoses, and tow lines on beams.
They dont realy repel pirates by themselves, but it makes it harder to board.

I guess the barbwires were installed to slow down pirates boarding. We had the same on Shelf Drilling oil rig "Baltic" offshore Nigeria. It was supposed to give enough time to the crew to rush to the safe zone and lock the doors

the C-Wire is probably set up by the ship's crew as an obstacle to pirates and prevent them from being able to board in places where the pirates like to pull up their boards and climb on.
