      yes, always this, heh.. not sure why it would be concidered to be common sense to all and why it shouldn't always be mentioned in tutorials about taking decks or any device apart.. besides from the screws being janky and one being slightly hidden it is probably the only part of taking apart the deck to ssd swap that isn't common sense / knowledge to a certain degree, lol.
      If Linus of LTT didn't think about doing it only to then snap his 1tb xtreme card that probably cost similar to more than my entire 64gb deck at the time he bought it in half when he opened his (something that many others have followed in his footsteps since, including other tech tubers) then it kind of proves that anyone can forget or not even think about it in the first place, even if your whole carreer is in part based around taking apart devices, and in his case even devices similar to the deck prior to doing that.
      I was just checking this vid at random to make sure I didn't forget anything obvious before taking mine apart since it's been a year I guess since last checking vids about it and only then had a duh moment thinking shit, the sd card!.. lol.. why I checked to see if anyone else had mentioned it :)

    If you buy the cheapest LCD 64GB steam deck right now it would be $349. iFixit sells the replacement screen mentioned in the video for $64.99. A 512 GB SSD goes for around $50. Totaling somewhere around $465. Granted you can find the ssd and screen for cheaper but at that point.. steam sells the upgraded steam deck with screen and 512ssb for $449. So.. I'm not seeing how this saves you money really. Its a fun diy project but not really a cost saver.

When I got to the point where I needed to download the Steam Deck OS and put it in a USB drive, I was not able to format it to GPT most likely because of the kind of drive I was using. Basically Rufus was letting me know the drive was MBR but it was still gonna let me copy the files into the drive. I was a bit nervous because I did not know if it was going to work, or if it was going to crash or brick my steam deck. Bottom line is I had no issues with it being MBR instead of GPT. • @thumperboyad1031

    I agree 64Gb is really a lame starting point. Even if you add a Micro SD it still installs shaders to the internal drive and it eats it up like candy. I think they should have at the very least started the base model at 128Gb SSD. That way at least you could drop a decent sized Micro SD card in there without having to worry about the shaders eating up internal storage.

      I have the 64GB version and yeah, I have to agree. I haven't installed a ton of games so this isn't a real issue for me (yet), but two things happened: a) when I tried installing Witcher 2 from GOG on the Heroic launcher, it would attempt to download the entire installer (20 GB) to /home before installing, which obviously failed; and b) some of the Proton installations are really big and don't get cleaned out if you no longer have any games that use them. However, while the 128GB starting point would have made so much more sense, I remember Gabe mentioning that they tried really hard to hit this sub-$400 price point with the base model, so a 128GB upgrade might have messed with that.

    I'll combine some of the replies I had to a few of the commenters here instead of actually replying to them:
    I did not unzip the bz2 file. Seemed to work fine.
    I didn't know Rufus would automatically format to GPT, I had done that manually from CMD.
    There were some errors during the flashing process (Discover Notifier closed unexpectedly, Plasma unable to start, no write access to $HOME, unable to reboot after flashing). The flashing process continued and the Steam OS appears to be working fine after going through initial account setup. Do not panic if your buttons and joysticks don't work during the flashing process, they'll work again after it's all done.
    First few tries I did this, during the step after you choose the USB drive to boot from, I was stuck seeing the Deck logo for HOURS. Co Worker says his took 5 hours. After I had put a Dock on and put the USB drive in that way (I was intending to provide power while flashing so I could go to sleep during the process), and the flashing worked within minutes of using the Dock.

      thought it would be as easy as this, too--bought a phone repair kit specifically for this so i had the proper-sized bits with philips 000, 00, 0, 1 among other bits, of which 00 and 0 are the real sizes for unscrewing, and i either stripped or wore out literally every screw, and popping open the back cover was a pita. the bits that were able to unscrew the outer bottom/top screws were different, and the same went for the inner screw--couldn't unscrew with same bit bottom and top. i also completely stripped the second screw for the cover for the battery and ssd, so i couldn't even replace the ssd with my 512gb one. unscrewing the first screw also resulted in the board literally chipping, probably because of the force i had to apply to unscrew it (or it was already damaged from being so tightly screwed). thankfully there was no massive risk of anything being damaged since there aren't any important things immediately around the screw holes, but the steam deck screws really are absolutely garbage.

    I think that, for what they are, they are a wonderful little device. For the first time ever, you have a true PC gaming system in the palm of your hand. I actually don't think of it as a hand held gaming PC. I think of it as a back up, hand held multimedia centre for if my PC ever fails on me, or for instances where I might be away from the house for a while, like say if I have to go into hospital. What would be interesting, is putting one of those in an arcade cabinet and setting it up against the like's of the Raspberry P.I., for old retro gaming purposes. One of those, in an Arcade Cabinet = Win.

    • @Espartanica
      @Espartanica Год назад

      Yeah. It might not ever replace a traditional PC because of all the drawbacks of being so compact, but it's still decent enough to hold its own. I'm particularly interested in games like Terraria, Halo, and emulators that don't necessarily need high end specs to play, so I plan to get one of these for the comfort of bringing my library on the go. Especially with Hollow Knight's sequel coming out soon, and being perfect for a pocket sized adventure.
