If we're going to have parliamentary privilege, it needs to be double sided. As in, if a politician can't be sued for for what they say, in parliament, under the purview of their political office, then the public can't be sued for talking about them, if it relates to their political office.

Dutton has been implicated in serious misconduct several times. From his office's admitted (and his continued silence on) involvement with the Crown Casinos visas, to narrowly avoiding jail time over being held in contempt of court - his actions in response to criticism or scrutiny appear motivated solely to silence dissent, control the narrative and maintain a firm grip on his position. Publicly laying claim to certain values, then repudiating them with his actions.
People like this are dangerous in any organisation, let alone the highest public offices, and need scrutiny. It's scary that as a voter we have to be careful with our words while we discuss the actions of our elected representatives and even scarier that major parties even entertain the idea legislating against our political dissent - but Australia owes the FJ team a massive debt for their fearless work. You're a beacon of light in the dark.

I was trying to discuss with a family member about how Dutton sued a guy for making fun of him on twitter, but they felt that controlling what people can say about the government on social media is important for the safety of children (that's not specifically what they said, but they agree with the whole Liberal idea being put forward that ~the kids need to be protected online~).
It's one of those frustrating things where you know that their heart is in the right place. As an individual they do genuinely care a lot about the safety of children (I'm talking about my family member here), but they refuse to consider the possibility that the government might stretch the truth a bit, or take advantage of public concern, and use it as a way to trick the people into taking away other freedoms from them. Right now there are lots of people who are convinced that the Liberal Party are the party of personal freedoms because of what is going on with covid.

Since that election they’ve put Dutton in a box and only let him out on the rarest occasions. As a result his popularity climbed again and now almost looks untouchable each time an election is held.

"We were keeping our eye on 1984. When the year came and the prophecy didn't, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of liberal democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares.
"But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell's dark vision, there was another - slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley's vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.
"What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us."
