An interest part that is often overlooked is where Alonzo says 'I've been planning it all week, son'. A first day rookie being there wasn't a coincidence. They needed green as grass rookie, with a clean background as the guy that shot Rodger in their alibi. I imagine those other guys have some dirt on them. So they needed someone clean as the shooter and who would corroborate their story.
Yep, they knew they couldn't trust him. He was too clean. It's like this in reality, too. If you want to be a cop you got to be willing to get a little dirt on you, or else they shun you, or some thug suddenly shoots you.
The coolest thing about the film is that they would all have to accept Jake after Alonzo was killed. Jake kept his mouth shut and never would go after them or Smiley or even the Three wise men. This would make him both trusted and feared. I really do believe Alonzo when he said Jake is exactly how he USED to be. There are indeed lots of HARD criminals who still appreciate and respect an honest cop. If not for themselves, then for their families. Smiley was genuinely thankful that a cop was there to save his niece from being raped/killed. Even Smiley himself was shocked and probably NEVER let someone go before that he was paid to execute.
I remember a field trip I went on in grade school. My whole class and I went to a bank. The bank manager took us into the vault. We got to hold $25,000 in $20 dollar bills. That is the only field trip I remember going on. It surely was one of the best ones.
Alonso wasn't only playing Jake, he was also playing his officers as well. They all believed they would get their cut of the money. Alonso claimed he was "holding it for them". Realistically, he was planning to rip all of them off and pay the Russians with their share. What is never explained in the movie is that Alonzo and Roger were partners in the LAPD before Roger retired. It was Roger who introduced Alonzo to the corrupt side of the LAPD but not even Roger believed Alonzo would become as evil as he did.
I thought he only held onto jakes cut of the money? He literally tells Jake, "first time, you ain't comfortable, I'll hold it for ya" The other dudes were holding theirs, and laughing along with Alonzo about being very comfortable
@@savagemonster5781 The one who was shot by Alonzo to cover Roger's murder threw the wad back to Alonzo to hold onto after saying oh I'm comfortable. The other one who said he's very comfortable didn't even get to touch the money. It was a $4m seizure which Alonzo downgraded to $3m when he did his taxation speech. Alonzo owed the Russians exactly $1m. Alonzo's cut plus the other two and Jake's cut equalled exactly that amount.
@@chrisrowe7503 I think they got there money. It'd be stupid of Alonzo to not give them anything, then he risks them ratting him out. Plus after the Roger incident, when they were in Alonzo's car, Alonzo tried to give the money to Jake again. If Jake accepted the money Alonzo wouldn't have taken him to the Mexicans house.
Doing the "right" thing is not always considered the "right" to others. Yes, Jake was righteous, but he forgot that he was surrounded by snakes. But in the end, Jake remained alive while Alonzo was killed by the Russians, his wife left him, his hood rejected him, and he was "shot in the ass." Jake won the battle. And Jake saving that gangster's niece also saved his life. God was on Jake's side the whole time.
That's why after Smiley gave his blessing he'll watch Jake's back after saving his Cousin, Jake was determined to arrest Alonzo and seize the stolen money (in a deleted scene, the 3 wise men visit Jake's apartment in Santa Clarita, CA to bribe him about the million (the three wise men were so greedy, they faked a high risk warrant and Alonzo will get a proper LAPD funeral).
It's funny how you say "doing the right thing doesn't always mean doing the right thing" the writer of this movie, also wrote the script for the movie "S.W.A.T." in which that same line was used👍
True another thing people don't pay attention to. The Russians was going to kill Alonzo regardless whether he had the money or not. They had every intention of killing him
He's reaction is very natural. It's his first day, doesn't know if this is a sting operation a set up to weed out bad cops, everything is happening too fast..so many angles and possible scenarios here.
You're right that he was playing him from the start, but I felt that Alonzo wouldn't have had Jake killed if he had taken the money. I believe the reason it's a training day for Jake is not only because Jake is trying to make the unit, but rather it's Alonzo trying to convert Jake into a crooked cop like himself and his guys under him. There were several moments throughout the film where Jake impressed Alonzo enough to the point where he thought that he could maybe be a part of his unit, ie when Jake beat down the guys that where trying to rape the young girl. However, Jake not taking the money was the final straw. But ultimately, a movie like this is left up to interpretation, which is what makes it so good.
If Jake took the money, he'll be involved with tampering with evidence, armed robbery, disorderly misconduct, and accessory to murder if the feds caught their scheme. They were going to kill him because Roger knows Alonzo killed a Russian made man in Vegas
This is the moment Alonzo decided to have Jake whacked. He wasn't planning it the whole day, which is a common misconception about this film. Originally, Alonzo had just been grooming Jake to join the squad with these other corrupt dudes. But since Jake didn't budge, he then had dirt on everyone and he had to go.
You reckon? I read some people mentioning that Alonzo was going to kill Jake either way. Would be interesting to see the turn of events if he did take the money.
@@lukej452nah lonzo not a cop killer but he is a dirty one and will kill a rat which is what jake was to him. They take fire, return fire, then proceed to dig up the mans floor before calling for backup??? +AoN being associated with crooked people is not what you call living a real life or focusing on things that matter. Alonzo and his fellow crooked narc cops were living the dangerous life. Even if I knew my family WOULD be killed, it would still be a tough decision depending on how much money were talking. Haha jk (but not really)
Ethan Hawke is criminally underrated for the endearing and relatable naïveté he brings to this role. Really pulls you in as the viewer cause he’s so human.
There are 22 packets in the trunk. Alonzo gives Jake one and says that's quarter million. Then the loot should total to 5.5 million, not 4. Also he is sharing 1 million among the four of them (a quarter each), but what about Dr. Dre's share
6 of em get 250k minus 1mil for the Russians, leaves the 3 mil seizure. Jake didn't know about the million he needed for the Russians obv. But the big problem is that those are $50 bills and not $500 bills so the 250k is actually only 25k.
The rest of the movie is over the top, but I feel this part is realistic. There’s no way of proving a criminal left a $4.75 million stash or a $4.25 million stash if you discovered it. Congrats, now $500k is yours. And let me tell you, the cop feels ENTITLED to that cut. No bs about sleeping thru ethics class. They think they earned it, plain and simple.
Damn, I feel Jake. My conscience would of been whooping my ass the same way, like "God is watching, what would your mother think, this might lead to your death, I truly want to be a "good" cop, God will condemn me, this is that test of my life everybody was telling me about, stand up and say no, these guys will want to kill me"... 😬🤕
Even if the rookie would have played along. They made sure his fingerprints were on everything. So if it came out that someone was pocketing the drug money, the rookie would have been blamed.
it would be 5000 bills total, I know from my days as a cashier how thick a stack of 100 bills is, so multiply that by 10 for the height, then by 5 for the width, the package looks alright.
That's kind of real how it goes down. I have never been apart of something this big as far as I've seen and know. However, I've had a family of Cops and this is realistic.

There's just something about the look on everyone's face and how they look at each other when Hoyt refused the money. Lol
Yep. The look pretty said that Hoyt was a dead man. Couldn't cut it.
Even Smiley himself was shocked and probably NEVER let someone go before that he was paid to execute.
and Hoyt's reaction when he realized he regretted taking it
They should have looked at the case instead, because there's at least 5.5 million in there, not 4
I remember a field trip I went on in grade school. My whole class and I went to a bank. The bank manager took us into the vault. We got to hold $25,000 in $20 dollar bills. That is the only field trip I remember going on. It surely was one of the best ones.
people would worship money, i hope they realize it's not everything
How was your comfort level while holding it lol :D
😂😂
@@borarider669 Oh he was comfortable
Alonso wasn't only playing Jake, he was also playing his officers as well. They all believed they would get their cut of the money. Alonso claimed he was "holding it for them". Realistically, he was planning to rip all of them off and pay the Russians with their share. What is never explained in the movie is that Alonzo and Roger were partners in the LAPD before Roger retired. It was Roger who introduced Alonzo to the corrupt side of the LAPD but not even Roger believed Alonzo would become as evil as he did.
I thought he only held onto jakes cut of the money?
He literally tells Jake, "first time, you ain't comfortable, I'll hold it for ya"
The other dudes were holding theirs, and laughing along with Alonzo about being very comfortable
Nope you got it wrong they turned in 2 million
@@chrisrowe7503 I think they got there money. It'd be stupid of Alonzo to not give them anything, then he risks them ratting him out.
Plus after the Roger incident, when they were in Alonzo's car, Alonzo tried to give the money to Jake again. If Jake accepted the money Alonzo wouldn't have taken him to the Mexicans house.
"Just make sure that bath tub is clean."
It's funny how you say "doing the right thing doesn't always mean doing the right thing" the writer of this movie, also wrote the script for the movie "S.W.A.T." in which that same line was used👍
its a movie
I know I'm mad late. But that was his mistress. His wife and he had three sons. They were mentioned twice. Once by Alonso and again after his death.
After the day he had with Alonzo I think it’s obvious this ain’t no operation to weed out bad cops LOL 😂
FACTS
"THERES ALWAYS TIME.. For one last kiss.."
Oops, wrong movie
JUST WAAAIIITTT!!!
Lmfao
If he took the money I think Denzel wouldnt try to kill him. Never trust a man who cant be bought right? :))
He was going to kill him from the start.
Yup. Gna kill em anyways.
Jake could be held accountable. That’s why he never would’ve killed him had he accepted the money.
Lonzo thought jake would just go with the flow of dirty police work and get his hands dirty but many times jake rejected and the last Alonzo needed was blood on jakes hands which was killing Rodger he refuses and freaked out and lonzo made the decision in the car when he also refused the money again, before jake got in the car you hear lonzo otp saying make sure the bathtub clean and lonzo have jake one last chance to see if we sell his soul by taking the money again jake refused and said fuck them.
1:51 look at that quick look he gives to the others like "yeah guys, he's trouble"
Yep, that look like, "he's a narc."
Denzels played a few characters that I absolutely loved but by far this is his best acting.
Does hoyt know that after taking down alonso, he still need to figure it out what to do with these crock cops? they probably kill him in the next days
that what I was thinking makes you wonder what happens to Jake afterwords.
They knew the Russians had killed Alonzo
+fashizzle78 hes still a witness to a crime they comitted and word would be out on the street that Jake took the money. Plus he was their friend... I think Jake has a very hard time after this.
+Jack Guelette Jake tooked the money and booked it at the police station .it was his evidence against them
You have a good point, I'm thinking the producers should make a sequel to this film.
how did they explain the hole in the floor that took, presumably, hours to dig, if the story is they were being shot at as soon as they open the door? They take fire, return fire, then proceed to dig up the mans floor before calling for backup??? This was a fantastically suspenseful film but a lot of shit doesn't hold up after you watch it a few more times.
Yea you're right. I never noticed that
If you go back to the scene when Denzel and Hawke (Jake) met the 3 guys at the restaurant, those men gave Denzel the okay for the hit. I AM THINKING the whole time their backs were covered if shit never added up in their report of raiding the house.
Yup the 3 wise men knew, and hence no investigation would be sought
Simple men Alonzo payed to the three kings remember? They coudl do whatever they want with the scene crime.
J Boogie: You forget the Three Kings.......
This movie is so full of intense scenes, thats why its so good :)
Agreed
Jake's fate was sealed before the movie began.
@travis "I've been planning this all week son."
What fate was sealed lol? Did you prophecy clowns even watch the movie? In the end he comes out top.
@@haveatyou1 He's talking about what happened after what we saw in the movie. Jake still has drugs in his system and participated in illegal activity. He also had the wise men and the other dirty cops to deal with.
@@michaelseeker9680 Lol what are you on about? What do you mean 'what happened after the movie'? The movie ended mate, end of. Nothing happened, as far as the movie is concerned. What if after the movie a meteorite hit and everybody died lol. Would his fate then still be sealed?

I loved it, says a whole lot about his situation.
That's how I look at my food in the microwave
Bearpaw LMAO these types of comments are usually lame af but you were on point cuz
Whoever wrote these dialogues and screenplay is a fucking genius
They should make a prequel showing what happened with Alonzo and the Russians in Vegas
Lol, bout 20 years too late for that one bruh
7 years too late for reply on that on that one bruh
Wish they made a prequel on Alonzo life and how he became all twisted. The series training day that was on CBS alonzo was mentioned how he was once a great cop but lost his way and became the most corrupt officer.
CSB I was just thinking that the other day
This aged well guess what’s in development...
I feel so 'comfortable' by just watching this scene

So u think 70 to 80 percent r on the take or into foul play in general?
The Then With Hoyt is that he just wants LA not to be Corrupted and Dirty also Wanting he's own world
Who else watching dirty cop Alonzo in 2019 ?
4 million? In one box. It's like 4 years of hard work for me. Imagine gettin all that in one day.
you get paid a million a year??
actually I wouldn't take the money at that exact moment and would need a lot more persuasion because this could be a test to see if I'm a dirty cop (assuming that I wasn't sure if Alonso's crew were corrupted).

"Who's gonna pay for my floor?"
Roger should have asked, "Who's gonna pay for my funeral?"

+ferrod liles Work your ass off for the next 20 years, or live a real life and focus on things that matter? Nigga I'd take that cash and I would be in Bora Bora before you can say flash.
Frodo Baggins there's always a certain kind of consequence when it comes to narcotics, did you not see what happens to alanzo at the end? oh but no when you have trouble or when your little daughter ends up missing who do you call? crooked cop won't care but end up having you and your family butchered
AoN take some of the cartels cash and see what happens
+AoN being associated with crooked people is not what you call living a real life or focusing on things that matter. Alonzo and his fellow crooked narc cops were living the dangerous life. Notice how Jake's conscience saved his little baby nuts in the end while Alonzo's egotistical-self didn't.
I'd rather work my ass off, maintain my conscience and my morale, and be a good cop rather than be a crooked cop who lives the dangerous life.
Fabricio to each their own.
Jake's face when he realises his whole crew are dirty is really something. Like wtf have I gotten myself into here!
1:51 that expression and look tells you everything you want to know
"I'm very comfortable" line has deep meanings
The fact that Denzel’s character actually based on a real cop who work for c.r.a.s.h (also in gta San andreas) is actually crazy
Training Day is one of the most quotable movies I've ever seen. Absolute classic written by David Ayer.
Then he went on with that same shit in Lord of War and got fucked for his hard work and honesty
Wasn't he offered a commendation and a promotion? The only thing that got fukd was his integrity
But he ended becoming a crooked cop when he moved to Brooklyn New York lol
Jake went on to become a corrupt cop himself in brooklyns finest
I didn´t like Ethan Hawke that much as an actor till i saw this movie... I mean the guy must be one hell of an actor to make this annoying character so believable and obnoxious, damn!!! Then watch him playing a cold blooded psychopath in that movie with Angelina Jolie...
Ethan Hawke is the man!!
How is he annoying though? I like his character.
He was bad ass in Brooklyns Finest
Dead Poet's Society
I don't think there is a person on this planet who would turn down that money if offered it knowing your not going to get caught... I mean who the fuck would turn that down? I would be keeping my mouth the fuck shut and praising the fucking lord that I had ended up on a force that happened to have a bunch of corrupt cops and were willing to pass out some of the money! Although thats just me... I also would have been keeping my mouth shut through when he shot Rodger.
your a smart man this shit they are in ain't no joke or game you open your mouth and snitch they'll kill you and make up some bullshit story and there bosses will likely believe them the word of a cop is extremely POWERFUL. especially if there more than one comfirming the bullshit story. remember when Jake said I didn't shoot Roger and Alonso said 4 "COPS" says you did. they key word is cops. cops are scary. no wonder the Feds be watching there asses at times I would.
I prob wouldn't take money that meant I would have to look over my shoulder everyday, that's not how I wanna live. I got enough problems, just gimme my peace of mind.
+tankmaster1018 I agree you're surrounded by 5 crazy trigger happy cops and you're going to play the boy scout shit? Even if he's got moral problems with all this he has to play his cards closer to the chest. They were about ready to blast him.
Easy for you to say, trust me if you were in this situation it be really hard to turn down that money, actions speak louder then words.
largec Lmfao I still agree with what I originally said. There is not one possible circumstance that I can think of where I would have given those cops shit and refused the money. Unless I knew my family or something would be killed if I took the money, I would be fucking taking it in a heartbeat. Even if I knew my family WOULD be killed, it would still be a tough decision depending on how much money were talking. Haha jk (but not really)
I know this is petty but the faces on the money are hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂
LOL When jake didnt want to take the money everybody got quiet.
They can't get mad at him just because he didn't take the money.
2:04 hows your comfort level?

hows your comfort level?
JayTelo 250,000 I'm on cloud nine
This movie is in my top 10 easily!
There are 22 packets in the trunk. Alonzo gives Jake one and says that's quarter million. Then the loot should total to 5.5 million, not 4. Also he is sharing 1 million among the four of them (a quarter each), but what about Dr. Dre's share
I don't think Alonzo wanted any of the share so Dre would have his cut, paying off the Russians and staying alive for him was enough of his "share"
+Mike Smith Alonzo was doing this whole op for money to pay the Russians, so he will want a share
The packs were at least double stacked, so there were at least 44 packets. $11 million+
6 of em get 250k minus 1mil for the Russians, leaves the 3 mil seizure.
Jake didn't know about the million he needed for the Russians obv.
But the big problem is that those are $50 bills and not $500 bills so the 250k is actually only 25k.
1:49 Jake signed his death warrant at that exact moment

The rest of the movie is over the top, but I feel this part is realistic. There’s no way of proving a criminal left a $4.75 million stash or a $4.25 million stash if you discovered it. Congrats, now $500k is yours.
And let me tell you, the cop feels ENTITLED to that cut. No bs about sleeping thru ethics class. They think they earned it, plain and simple.
