One reason why the audience appears so unenthusiastic is because in the 80s the 'Showtime at the Apollo' crowd was mostly an R&B crowd. Around this time there was a divide in the Black community (mostly generational) between those who appreciated Hip Hop and those who thought it was trash (a lot of the older Black folk used to call it "noise"). The Apollo crowd did not become largely Hip-Hop until the early 90s. A lot of this is even reflected in how the audience is dressed in this video. By the mid-90s you would never see people dressed like this there, especially with so many Hip-Hop acts dominating the show by then.
True, the audience seemed to like it though! I'm a little young but I remember my dad had a lot of super old school rap vinyl. He liked Run DMC crowdhype acts.. he didn't like battle rap. He told me about Kool Moe Dee dissing Busy Bee in 1981 and how 'black music' should have never been about taking on other black men. So I guess that's his view.. "Hold on Busy Bee I don't mean to be bold / but put that bom biddy bom bullshit on hold" - Kool Moe Dee
@@ComboBreakerHD Funny enough, Kool Moe Dee became one of the most positive and conscious rappers of his time. Though, he could never shake his beef with LL Cool J, which I believe ultimately killed his career.
To all the haters: they were in my country in eastern Europe back in 1988. RUN,DMC and JMJ were the only blacks and Still we had Suchman a good fun that i have never had in my life since then. Just saying i am 47. I Still love and listen to them
It was one of the best time of my life when them 3 legends came to Hungary to perform back in the 80’s. Now I’m 50 but still remember everything they did on the stage. Run DMC is just certified fire
Very prominent song for me since I went to a mostly white school and the black people had to stick together, so this song was our anthem!! Run DMC the Kings from Queens!
Legendary group, the thing i love the most about 80's and begin 90's hip hop is the dj scratch. I'm also a big fan of rock music so Run DMC is the perfect match for me! Sadly i'm only listening to them since a few weeks, but imma definately buy some albums man, this is gold!
I found this song before Jan 5 that George Washington Carver was passed away on that date in 1943. He's the greatest scientist and being role model of my whole life. Thanks for paying tribute with this song. With love from Myanmar
God bless the next baby that come in this world Wow super powerful. Yes I definitely agree God bless the next baby that comes in this world . INCREDIBLE.
what's going on with the audience?!?! I'm thinking that because rap was "new" at this time, they don't know quite what to do?!?!? get up and shake your rump
