The barrier has always been imaginary because everyone I knew in the 80s liked RUN DMC and Aerosmith, even before this song came out.
Much like Hip Hop was thirty years ago. Rock was invented by blacks and was criticized as not being "real" music. This was a legendary moment in music history. It reignited Aerosmith's career.

That's awesome to hear! I was maybe 12 or 13 when this came out and, like you, knew it was a game changer. Now I have a teenaged son who listens to mainly rap (he hates hard rock and metal for the most part).....but I have a feeling I might just win him over with this song! I love when kids like the music us parents listened to back in the day!

The youngens will never understand the importance of this video in hip hop/rock in roll history. This was the first time something like this had ever been attempted. It brought mainstream recognition to Run DMC and it revitalized the has been rock group Aerosmith! It was a beautiful moment in 80s music!

Not really. Dude Looks Like a Lady rejuvenated them. The Run DMC thing was just part of grand scheme between Rick Rubin and John Kalodner. Then Aerosmith went on tour with G'N'R, the biggest thing in rock in at least a decade. You could say that's what rejuvenated them, but no. It was a combination of things.

I remember the times when this came out: Rock was one thing and Rap was a completely another world. This went so far that people beat another up because of different music styles. And then these guys put everything together and made one the coolest tracks ever. Times were good back then. It's like fairytales becoming true to create a better world. I wish something like this would happen again to bear down all the hate, which is out there...

I never forget when this came out; we went absolutely NUTS... craziest thing I had ever heard up until then; my all time favourite collab of two very different genres. I was no stranger to the compelling beats and rhymes of Hip Hop; so in that way the tune was already great. But man, when I heard those guitars, and that type of primal scream singing voice from Steven Tyler, I was driven wild.... Yeah, I had likely heard the music genre through radio before that, I guess, but this really, really caught my attention. The whole collab was just sick on another level.
I have Run DMC and Aerosmith to thank for this intoduction to an entirely different kind of music; them and Public Enemy (they used a sample from Slayer's Angel of Death as a backing for their tune 'She Watches Channel Zero'...). These people really opened my ears.
If rap nowadays had more guitar like this, even if only a remix sample, then it would be a lot better.

I love how they don’t try to flex or outdo one another, but celebrate and encourage each other to go even harder. Aerosmith had been off the radar for a few years when I first saw this video. I was always a fan from the 70’s and I was now appreciating clever and good rap. When I saw this I lost my mind first time. This should be shown in high school sociology classes. It’s historic. I’m 62 years old and grew up in Georgia and could see then, the possibilities.

This didn't launch Run DMC. They had already released two successful albums.
This did not launch Absolutely Run Dmc was already on top! What it did for them was expose them to more fans. It ressureccted Aerosmith's career because now they're doing a song with the top people.
