@@guitarofdestiny It wasn't all in one take, but still he would be able to do it in one take, and you know why? Because he is an actor, that's it. It's part of his job.
I wonder if any if these actors or any of the writers of this scene realized that Salinger was, at least partially, referring to them when he talked about phonies.
"I like girls for their looks too but at least I'm honest about it. I don't go out and buy them a copy of Catcher In The Rye then give them some 7th grade interpretation about how Holden Caulfield was some profound genius. He wasn't! He was a spoiled brat! He wasn't some profound genius or a spoiled brat, he was a passionate, confused, stupid kid in a lot of pain and most likely traumatized from sexual abuse. I don't understand how the fuck people don't understand this.
and thats why we are magic ... people, i GIVE you the author of "Gettin jiggy with it " .. and THIS most thought provoking monologue performance... flawless
The Greatest Acting will Smith has ever done,He's Brilliantly embodies the character of "Paul"(Poitier).I can't believe this Film came out 20 yrs ago already
j.d. salinger would throw up had he seen this scene. doubt that the writers even understood what kind of "phonies" holden was talking about, or even read salinger's letter regarding the book
every page he mentioned, I turned to it in my copy and I was sad, because my copy clearly didn't match his =(, however this scene was great, it really did pretty much explain the point of the book =D
First, how apropos. Secondly, talk and discussion like this is what I trained for and thought I'd grow into. But alas, I live in a society where no one wants to grow up and all the corporations and "adults" want to make sure they never mature.
If I had been there and had to endure listening to this I don't know if I'd rather have shoved my finger down my throat or bounced a wine glass off Will Smith's head.
imagination was the conclusion of his thesis. he starts off with the catcher in the rye, and notes how all these killers pointed to the book as their reason to do what they did. so he looks at the book, and he sees a troubled child who sees the world as fake and impure, but he then notes that all of us have the same problem. We all see the world as fake and our struggle is to fit into a world that is different than we are. And then he says that this difference, this struggle to fit in, this sense of distinction that we have of ourselves as separate from everybody else, is crossed by our imagination. that all of us can only connect to the world through our imagination. That when we fail to bridge the gap between ourselves and the world outside of us, it is a failure of the imagination. He posits that schizophrenia is simply a failure of our imagination connecting us with the outside world, that all of us struggle to connect with the outside world, but that some of us do not succeed. In conclusion, he is suggesting that crazy people are just people who are incapable of imagining how the world outside themselves is.
+Alex Czerpak Yes. I have read it! And I know a movie will never be of the same quality as the book but it could be nice to just relax and still have somewhat the same feeling as I had when reading that book.
I think what they were trying to say was the movie of Catcher in the Rye would never happen because Salinger never wanted it to be a movie. When he was still alive he was approached by famous producers and directors but he made himself very clear that he’d never sell the rights of Catcher. He passed away in 2010 and his wife and daughter have the rights to the book so who knows what will happen.
Haha... who knows. I have three names so.... It works out ;) I was reading that book in the breaks and while ignoring work. I wanted to finish it on the train on my way home. Basterds!!
Than I could possibly understand? Presumptuous, aren't we? Watch out....self-proclaimed "intellectual" in the house. As shown in this film - prepare yourself to be "intellectually" shown to be a fool throughout your life.
Smith just rocks that Navy Blazer and Khakis! I remember seeing this in the Western Suburbs of Sydney Australia one Sunday night in 1993 was when Will Smith was big with his Code Red album. The theatre was full of teenage kids with backwards Ball caps. Let's just say they lost interest pretty quickly! Not Only Smith was articulate but he was also gay.
This is an Arson prevention meeting. we are competing for a contract to net us, 21,000. This was my presentation to the Committe. I gave this talk twice. The second time was as the man you think of as Will SMith. The people present are Nick Bollman and my parents at that time. I won the contract with this type of Claude Goldenberg with a crown thinking. And Oscar presentation. Neiman Vampire
I just got done reading it and I don't agree with the ideas in this monologue. Holden just seems pathetic to me, and judgmental of everyone around him.
I did a play once and had a difficult time memorizing two paragraphs. This is a very well acted five minute dialogue by Will Smith. He's a good actor.
Vernon Woodroffe lol so true tho
Vernon Woodroffe it's called editing genius. It wasn't all in one take

More ppl who will like it will read it cuz of this movie
My fav. Will Smith performance. I mean he's doing a scene with incredible actors and he held his own.
So that's how Ian Mckellen got into The Lord of the Rings movies, great job Will Smith
I LOVE this scene. Thank you for posting!!! :-)
All the heaven and earth is within you..Live every moment of your life..Thank you.
This scene deserved an Oscar
This didn’t age well
A lot of people don't realize that Holden's trek around New York is a dry run for when he's older and blows away a lot of phonies.
No doubt ,it is the best book written in the history of the man kind.Phonies hate this book.
this shit is hard to remember
Best monologue ever!!!
i memorized this whole thing
Not bagging on Will Smith, but this was his greatest performance.

Matt Smith Except Holden was dealing with depression, PTSD and had dealt with abuse but sure just talk about how spoilt he is.
He wasn't some profound genius or a spoiled brat, he was a passionate, confused, stupid kid in a lot of pain and most likely traumatized from sexual abuse. I don't understand how the fuck people don't understand this.
Some ppl say it wasabout the war cuz salinger saw more service than say, william golding
@@lukelbd_ it's more crazy to me how people don't see how Salinger was clearly criticizing people like Holden because the are hypocrites.
He references the lord of the rings and Ian mckellen who is in this movie, also star in the lord of the rings
In other news: Water=Wet
Well performed
What The HELL did he just say?
Nothing really. But they were certainly impressed.
Goes to show you - it's not WHAT you say, but HOW you say it.

I got a letter from the police today that they are dropping the case. It was to be expected though.

Gonna read again tomorrow
The real irony is that this room is full of phonies

I was robbed today on my way home from work. They stole my wallet with 300€ in it.
And a copy of The Catcher in the Rye. True story.
Well, sounds like they had not read it....or you might have had a worse fate.
