We are two crazies from South Africa, Frik & Petro. We knew absolutely nothing about sailing, but the ocean has always been calling. So, we got rid of all our stuff, bought a Leopard 45 Catamaran, and set sail. Follow us as this story unfolds! This is a sea-life adventure captained by a couple of nomads who have built their lives on doing what inspires them in the moment. Join us and see how we break free of the traditional lifestyle, creating videos of our journey, adventures, life on board, and lessons learned along the way. It will be super rewarding if we can be an inspiration or contribute in any way to anybody wanting to fulfil their dreams.
SISU (Finnish concept) is a grim, gritty, white-knuckle form of courage in situations where success is against the odds. Taking action against the odds and displaying courage and resoluteness in the face of adversity, in other words, deciding on a course of action and then sticking to that decision even despite repeated failures.

Congrats on an epic effort refitting. I am amazed you managed to get so much done in such a short space of time, you must have some serious project management skills to get such a variety of work done…as ever in awe of your skill set.
Thank you Trevor!!!! It was 6 weeks after all LOL. But yes, it was a lot of work, fortunately a lot of pre fabrication made work much easier and quicker. They had various teams on the boat at the same time . . .
Damn! That was an expensive haul out! But you certainly got some major upgrades- The new bottom looks great! We did the same to Ikigai in Trinidad. Hope you guys are doing well, wherever you are now!
Hey Paul!!! Expensive is an understatement, but yes, like all yachties know, sailing is a costly affair. But so worth all the wonderful times we have seeing the world . . . Missing you guys so much!!!! Much love to Kristen. O, currently in Antigua, heading south soon
Your granddaughter is so beautiful! We’re so happy for you that you finally got to spend some time with her! 🥰🥰🥰.
She is adorable, yesssss so glad I could eventually make it, thanks to a very generous gratuity given by one of our guests. Actually paid for my plane tix.
And Aloha from the Big Island where we live. Maybe ya'll well sail here someday.
Thanks for a Great video again and can't wait tell the next one.
So until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!
Aloha!!!! It was a brief but great visit to your beautiful island. Don't know if the winds will lead us there, time will tell. Thank you so much for your support
I agree with Frik on what is classified as "important stuff". Nice update video. BTW, tell Frik that I had my solo flights this weekend! Soon I will be flying my airplane. Cheers from Winnipeg.
I wow!!!! Congratulations, you must be super stoked. I will tell Frik. Cheers, well done.
Cheers guys!
Cheers Trev!!! Well done on the 35k subs!!!!
Wow that was quite a rock you hit! Do you remember where it happened??? We’re headed back up there next summer and would love to mark that on our charts 😊
Hey sweetie, I will get Frik to message it to you. He did mark it for sure. Nasty bugger it was 😒
Cutest baby! She is just adorable!!
I couldn't get enough of her, she is just the cutest thing ever. It was extremely sad saying goodbye, felt like someone ripped my heart from my body . . . .
The upgrades look great..We look forward to the Finished project. Petro has a cute grandbaby?
Thank you guys. She is so adorable, missing her heaps!!
Luv the STUFF!! Frik
Thank you !!!!! Stuff is important on passage LOL
an idea in unsinkable boat you can make buissiness on is...
like an airbag in a car :) use weatherballons and fx if catastrofic leaking in engineroom. use a tank with air and 1 bar to fill fx 5 diameter ballon and prevent so an safe port can be reched. of course sharp edges in engineroom is prevented first...catamarans with two enginerooms is better :) best from björn in sweden
Yeah, cat owners often try to figure out ways to use a dinghy below the bridge deck. Deflate, insert, inflate. Or empty fuel cans.
Thanks this was a useful and worthwhile video especially for those considering new purchases .. interesting to hear your positive comments on the seawind company backup and ownership of design problems, where other companies possibly less honourable .. and the design issue that were encountered with stuff being workable but slightly undersized or superseded on launch. I would love to hear your comments on dragonfly 35 …
Dear David, I never owned a seawind nor dragonfly. Thus cannot help you there. As for Robertson and Caine, they are and were very supportive towards us and other owners.
That SS welding "lyk vir my nes mossie kak" I agree.
VERSEKER!!!! Gladnie beindruk met daai swak werk nie. Het n helse lang onderonsie met hulle gehad oor dit. SA se was is PUIK.
People's Weather, DStv 180 @ 18h30 😎😎
@@SailingSisu wow! Can't wait
🤔 an analogy between a tattoo and a 🐝 ⬅️ Bee sting. They both HURT 😮 during. Yet, afterwards 😊 BTW, the tats look GOOD👍🏼
Thank you Steven, yes, a painful experience indeed
Prices are silly in the US hey but that’s the labour costs for sure as products are cheap there.. you should have considered leaving the yanmar alternators in place and adding another. We have that on ours.
Hi Mike! We had two Yanmar alts per engine, but all started to fail within a month while we were in Bahamas. They were temperature controlled by a Sterling alt/charger controller, but yeah, they are designed to top up a starter battery, not pushing 60A - 110A continously for 3-4 hours. We don't have a genset so, engines are used to charge housebank. Even when Stirling cut the charging down to 60A per engine, 30A per alt, was it forced to do a 50% duty cycle, meaning that the engines run 50% of the time not charging. With the EEMAX, we now run engines and get 360A or 4,000W in continously and therefore only need to run the engines for one hour every three days 😉
Good episode. Yip, boating/sailing is damn expensive 💰
Hey Chris, yup you should know . . . . LOL
The costs for boat parts are a nightmare and insolent. But why you have to repair the windows? Is there no warrenty? And which Windows we are talking about? The escape hatches as well?
The Sikaflex Primer is flaking off from the expanding/contracting acrylic window. This is a known issue and an ongoing fight with Sikaflex. Yes, the first four years Robertson and Caine did support the warranty, but now it is becoming a maintenance issue. We used a different primer when we re-bed the saloon roof window in Turkey a few years back and this time the primer sticks like crazy, but now the window starts to crack because it cannot expand that much. Catch-22. The Leopard 45 does not have escape hatches, the main hatches and front door are big enough to be escape hatches.
Mooi man. Wondering when all saling done , where will home be?. New Zealand or back home. Always difficult decision I guess. Keep well and thanks for the great videos.
That is for sure a Jackpot question 🥴, but the quick answer is: not SA 😁. We get to see so many awesome places, and we're not even halfway around the world yet, so who knows 🤔
We found you on RUclips and love your videos. My husband is South African and we love you guys. Are you going to the Annapolis Boat show in October? ❤
Hey Karin, WELCOME to our channel. So glad you enjoy what you see :-)))))). Unfortunately not, we were there last year. We are currently heading south towards Grenada. You must enjoy the show, it is a great party for sure. Have a Painkiller on us at Pusser's
@@SailingSisu Ah that’s too bad, we wanted to meet you. We are new to sailing and will be buying a live aboard catamaran in the next 10 months or so. Getting our ASA certifications and shopping. We love your Leopard 45. Any tips for us newbies? 💖⚓️
Karin DM me on messenger, I might have an idea for you
@@SailingSisu I DMed you. Dankie. 😁
Thats a big cost of maintenance + upgrades. What year is your Leopard?
It's a 2018, so 5 years living and sailing on her takes it's toll 😔. Some of the upgrades were just to make living on her more comfy, not necessarily a necessity 🤔
That was just ridiculously expensive. Nice job, though. Except the welds then, perhaps.
It was indeed!!! The welds are a sore topic for sure . . . .
I am glad you brought that up. They were shocking. It's my trade and I would be embarrassed. But it was nice to hear SA getting the recognition it deserves with far better quality!😊
Whow, baie duur diens en upgrade. Groete van SA
Ongelooflik duur David!!! Veral met ons ZAR wat so swak is
How old is Tipex ? What could you have done to prevent some of those appalling repairs ? Looks like we’ve been in the wrong industry with prices like that .
Hey Paul, Tippex was 5 years old. She only had 1 patch, a rip we picked up in Turkey. The balance of the pieces that was coming undone is the seams. We had chaps on her, and hauled her out of the water after every trip to shore, we never tow Tippex behind Sisu when underway. So don't know what else we could've done ????
Eina!! Hope the numbers are Rands and not USD. Groete from Cape Town
Unfortunately they were in USD!!! You can say EINA again . . . .
I cant believe how expensive the items you have updated/replaced came too! Unbelievable that you had to pay $21k to rebel the windows after 4 years, i would have pursued Robinson & Cane on that cost. It seems there are so many substandard windows bonded into many Leopards!
This is a known issue and an ongoing fight with Sikaflex. Yes, the first four years Robertson and Caine did support the warranty, but now it is becoming a maintenance issue. That said, we used a different primer when we re-bed the saloon roof window in Turkey a few years back and this time the primer sticks like crazy, but now the window starts to crack because it cannot expand that much. Catch-22. Those windows expand on the edges as much as a centimetre on all sides. We had to trim the windows so that they don't catch the hull or adjacent windowpanes on hot days. It is crazy!
Frik what is interesting is that our new to us Catana still has all original caulking in all the windows since it was built in 2009. The acrylic is crazed so some time I will need to replace them myself. The big issue is that Catana paints the acrylic on the outside with a frame so you get no uv through it causing it come undone
@@mikeferguson2828 that is different. RC is painting on the inside, called a primer, but this is also causing the issues. The primer does not expand the same as the acrylic or the Sikaflex and then peels off
We feel with you. 😉
Have I seen this correctly that on the 45 there is no bilge sump in the engine rooms AKA the bilge pump takes the water directly from a somewhat rounded bottom? 😳
There is a bilge pump in each engine room with an alarm light showing on the DB board as well as helm station when activated. The same for main hulls, but there is a high-water level alarm too, which will show red alarm lights on DB and helm with a high pitch beeping sound for in case the bilge pumps are overrun with water ingress.
@@SailingSisu Bilge SUMP like in the hulls where the water collects at a point lower than the surrounding area. The 45 looks like the Fountaine Pajots where there is no sump but the water is taken directly from the rounded hull. Have you never head any problems with that? On our 48 the shower drips from time to time and we only notice it because it collects in the bilge sump. 😬
in the engine room, there is a square indentation where the water is collected. inside the square indentation is the bilge pump as well as the float device, which triggers before the square indentation overflows. not sure what you want to call that :-) in the hulls there is a "slot" like the formation of the keels, which are deeper than the "rounded" hull. it is much longer than the square indentation in the engine room, which allows much more water to collect before the float switch is triggered. Petro has to climb in and dry it out with every water maker mishap :-( so, if you refer to the main hull and not the engine room, then yes, it is a pain to get rid of the water laying lower than the switch trigger.
@@SailingSisu Thanks for the info. Then the 45 is exactly like the 48 in this regard and I just got it wrong from what I‘ve seen in the video. On other brands the indentation is missing and if there‘s water and a bit of swell it’s moving around inside the engine room. 🤨
Happy to hear that R&C still know what they‘re doing. The windows on our 48 are still in pretty good shape. I think it‘s the temperature difference Med vs. Caribbean.
The factory should be covering the cost of your windows being reinstalled under warranty Frik. I hope they aren't giving you trouble, especially considering how much you have advertised the brand for them.
Trend, as you know, this is a known issue and an ongoing fight with Sikaflex. Catch-22.
@@SailingSisu Oh you chose to change the process. That is really unfortunate that it didn't work out. Someone sent me the video and I saw the bill and was like WTF 20k thats the whole boats windows. I'm doing the same now and rolling the dice as I don't want to use Sikaflex. Well good luck, hopefully they see their initial install caused hardship and help you out in some way.
Nice upgrades. the cost of everything boating really frightens me away from ownership. Thousands for 2 alternators..........
Tell me about it, very scary indeed. But it's been 5 years, and 31000 miles, so Sisu has been through a lot. Was time to give the lady a bit of upgrades
My secret is to maintain, but only upgrade as little as possible. I don't want luxury, just some comfort.
That is our thoughts exactly. Living on the boat 24/7/365 we try to make Sisu as comfortable and practical as possible.
That is why you never trust others to do antifoul, besides the cost rarely do they do a proper job. Also did you choose sail drives or did you purchase the boat with those? Most people i've known who have them say they're a curse
yeah, I realize the antifoul DIY thing now. But we were not allowed to do DIY in that boat yard...insurance issues. The sail drives come standard and it is not an option. I am sure that shafts have similar maintenance issues with cutlass bearings and shaft seals?
@@SailingSisuyup. Bottom jobs is dirty, but I have never seen or felt the satisfaction and value you get besides DIY. Boatyards generally do not care enough, unless you sit and watch every paint stroke.... I'm doing Innisfail in January🥴
Good luck :-)
Just had to replace the roof > 70K .... Its only Money .... & Im stuck with the niegbours LOL
🤣 🤣 🤣 But it's a LOT of money tho 🥴
Hallo !!!! .
I thought only Zatara could afford to do a haul out for that kind of money. Absolutely nuts. You guys need to be doing more of your own work as this is not sustainable ( unless you have a very healthy income stream). Bliksem !
It is crazy what boat yards ask! Watch our latest video...
Wow that is onexheck of a bill 😥
VERY SCARY indeed!!!
@@SailingSisu I converted it to ZAR😱😱😱😱😱

Any chance you two are going to be in Annapolis again this year? Catherine and I would love to buy you a round or two of Pain Killers : )
Ah man!! It will be super great to see you guys again, but sadly no, we are heading south at the moment, currently in Antiqua. We will spend quite a while in SVG (St Vincent and the Grenadines), great sailing grounds.

We will be in the SVG (St Vincent & the Grenadines) then. Great sailing grounds . . . .
@@SailingSisu yep absolutely fantastic cruising grounds! We were there in May and did a passage over to the Panama Canal. If you ever need crew let us know 😎…but our boat is done next year so no guarantees after that!

Dis mos die Kost in R nie $?
Ongelukkig is dit USD :-((((((( Dis vrekkens duur. En met ons ZAR wat so swak is, maak dit geweldig seer.
Could have saved a fortune doing the work yourself in a yard where you can work on your own boat.
That will most likely be the route we will take next time, will save a lot of $$$$$$
im glad i didn’t buy a leopard.
Glad you didn't buy a boat you mean :-D because nothing in this video was leopard specific :-D
