I've been listening to SSS since 1953.....I can hum it, note for note, all the way through. The unbeatable version was at Benny Goodmans Carnigie Hall concert in 1938; no recording thereafter came near that.........but............ ...these girls are FABULOUS. The sheer skill and swing they achieve is wonderful......there stage craft is superb....and they look great. BG will be smiling with approval at the Swing Girls!
For all the doubters out there you need to watch this song being performed at the end of the movie THEN watch this live performance recorded later! These girls continued to practice and learn and it clearly shows in the live performance. Since these girls are actresses i doubt they still play together but as a Sax player myself during High School (about a hundred years ago, LOL) i can tell you the music bug never really leaves you. After many years away from playing i am back at it partially due to this movie and watching Kyoto Tachibana High School. I suspect that sooner or later some of these ladies will get the urge again also!
I had to search hard to find this concert DVD. I love it! The movie is LOTS of fun, and also much more easy to find on DVD. One of my favorites movies and a great fun concert, together they are among my most cherished DVDs I own.
What a great rytm! You feel with your body: Danse, Danse, Danse! I have played trumpet in a band and you can feel the sound when all members make it work together. Fantastic that the actors did play, especially with a few weeks learning, much better than original band. Maybe because the band leader found this sound when learning them. Every band has their own rytm and you need to find it! They play also with their body means that they have the rytm to let the fingers live their own life on the instrument! Thank you all!
they all learned their instruments 6 weeks before filming started they were taught at the yamaha school of music in tokyo. yamaha showcased the new line of horns and funded the movie. then after the movie sent them on a world tour
+Naufal Aden yes i started playing cornet in 64 and was barely playing at this level as 1st chair cornet in 72 as a sr. i was not taught to read music properly
+brokenwrench1 I play diffrent instrument, but I feel the same :v.. I really want to know what kind of training did the have :D they must be really serious about this :D
+Naufal Aden they spent 8 hours per day 6 days a week at the yamaha school of music in tokyo and yamaha funded the movie and furnished all the instruments. yamaha was introducing a new pro trumpet model and they were furnished for the world concert tour that followed a year later. just play the sing sing sing performance from their first and last concert. the group had been playing for 18 months when it was recorded and you can tell the difference, it was a lot stronger
What a great tribute to the swing era! I agree with Timbotot WIlkins that Benny & Louis would have been proud, and while nobody's ever gonna be Gene Krupa...good job on the skins. I missed the clarinet solo, but over all....good performance. Loosen up a bit and you'll be alright. :)
I find it a little strange, that all these actresses were taught to play for the movie. In Japanese schools, they have after school clubs, and every student is expected to join one. It is traditional for the girls to join the Wind Instrument Club. The Kyoto Tachibana Green Band, is a band made up of senior students ranging in age from 15 to 18. For those of you who like band music, i suggest you take a viewing of them.

Sadly, you won't be able to listen to something this cool on American Radio Stations. Most of the songs that they play are pop flop and for sure that they'll never give girls the biggest breaks that they should've gotten long ago. Hmmm. I wonder if someday that I might get Commercial Free HD Radio as well?

The discussion arose about the fact that the girls had no musical experience, and worked very hard for 6 months to perfect their musical talents. In the case of Yukari Toyoshima, from Hokkaido, she attempted to make it in the music industry, and produced a couple of CD's where she showcased some of the songs that she wrote and sang. She also was popular in Japan doing some shows with a band she formed, and attempted to get a booking here in the Los Angeles area to do a show. She did get here, but I think her trip turned out to be more of a vacation rather than a showbiz gig. She was in one other Japanese movie, but not sure how popular that movie was in Japan. Timbo

Pretty amazing performance. But I wonder why the entire sax line is tuned just a tiny bit flat? For this kind of hot swing, it's customary to actually tune the saxes a little sharp, so they can cut against the trumpets...
It absolutely amazes me that girls this young are interested in this kind of music and play it so well. VERY impressive, ladies!!!
And they learnt all the instruments over 3 months just for the movie

I miss Japan. Spent 21 years flying in and out of Narita, Osaka, Kansai & occasionally Yokota and other places. Got to know some great people.
