I took part of vintage stool that I have been meaning to reupholster for quite a while. The fabric it was covered in was needing to be replaced. What I found underneath was layers, heavy cotton fabric, then burlap, then what I guessed to be horse hair which this video confirmed. Then I see What looks like caning. I’m going to wash the horse hair and replace the burlap and the fabric batting. I’m going to attach new fabric on top.

How can I find out what my chair is stuffed with. I've removed it, but don't know. I plan to wash and resuse the product but would like to know what it is. Thanks for this information!

Thank you for this! I just picked up a vintage chair someone was getting rid of and it was actually the first time I've come across horse hair (and springs!) in a piece of furniture I was reupholstering. It's very dusty and I was wondering if I should just replace it with foam, wich is what I normally use. But I'm happy to hear I can just wash and reuse the horsehair. I'm even more excited for my project now!

In my 1940’s motorcycle seat padding, the hand wash looked great, but the tumble dryer didnt work, and really ruined the shape and created holes in the patern just fyi
