I use a Bausch and Lomb 10x eye loop to inspect for pests. I also remove the frag plug and throw it in a bin to reuse later.

I quarantine all of my fish. Only way to go. Some people just don't get it or need to learn the hard way like I had to.
Do u just quarantine and watch for anything or treat with meds?
If your reef is new and has zero livestock, how do you go about quarantining your clean up crew and any fish you're adding at the same time? Just separate them in quarantine as equally as possible? All fish from the same tank at the store into the same quarantine tank together or separate them out? Separate by species (crabs in one, snails in another, fish in another, etc)? Do you need to quarantine shrimp? Thanks for all the videos! I love getting to watch your tank while you answer questions.

yes! I learned the hard way
I didn't have a quarantine tank when I wanted to buy fish for my reef tank, so I simply bought Molly's and acclimated them over the week in a large bucket. No chance of white spot or velvet or anything really. Still only just got the Molly's and going good in 1.025 for over 15 months.
Having set up a SW Specialty store in the SeaTac area, its extremely rare that a LFS or even wholesalers use a QT tank before selling you live stock! Yeah that Grouper they are selling for 40 bucks used to only cost me about 5 bucks if it wasnt on sale from the wholesaler. So yeah there is about a 400-600% mark up on your live stock. Just like the video said, a big part of the reason is you have to pretty much expect to loose half your stock in a shipment or to not survive long after being shipped. Its a fact of life. When it comes to dry goods your LFS is basically selling it at cost or pennies above cost at best.

Not everyone has room for a quarantine but it should be a priority if you're running a medium-large system (For the sake of the animals and your wallet.)

What do you recommend for those who dont have room for a QT? Maybe try to create a stand with two levels like you have for QT and sump? I think that might be my only option

Very good video quarantine is the way to go. You have a lot of people that have RUclips channels that just throw their fish and corals in the tank they're not really giving good advice to everybody else keep up the good work
hey man as always I really enjoy your videos.. can you show how to make a temporary cheap quarantine tank. Does the tank water have to be cycled or do you do 50 percent water change every week? what is a good size to start one. Do you dose copper in tank if so how much and long.

Hi, there are few questions that i still confused with quarantine tank. I'll break it down to :
1. How long do i cycle my QT? If i am using all new equipment.
2. If i have 1 fish in the QT for a while, and if i going to add new one, should i move the old one to Display tank or just add the new one straight away?
3. Then how to move my fishes from QT to DT? What are the best methods

Do people still do fresh water dips with their saltwater fish to get rid if parasites? Just wondering if we could do that for the inverts since it's hard to quarantine them.
Acclimating and lowering the salinity is that the best way? Can you do a video on how often to lower it and what the lowest salinity should be. Then how long to bring it back to the normal salinity in detail. Love the videos.

I absolute agree about quarantine tank. and there is no excuse if you ask me. petco and petsmart sells 10 to 20 gallon set up tanks and that is pretty much all you need to make one. and they are like 50 to 70 bucks too. tank, heater, filter, light, net and lid. Well worth the money

ok, so I quarantine a fish. Looks like he may have ich. Never treated the tank, just let him work through it. He was eating fine... 9 to 10 weeks later, no sign of ich. OK to put in display tank?

Screw the haters man, I'm exactly the same. To the people who want to put it out there that qt is a waste of time, you have rocks in your head. Anyone that has any decent amount of experience (or just common sense) knows how valuable a quarantine system is.. I don't get why people have to be so butthurt because they can't do things right!! Keep up the good work

FishOfHex, well speaking only for myself, it doesn't have to but it should. The only videos I really watch on RUclips are reef tank related. I'm much older than you I know so nothing about video gaming is of interest to me. I guess I'm just trying to say if the subject of the video is the quarantine of saltwater fish I expect the video portion to be at least loosely related and video games just don't come anywhere near relating. as I said though, that's just me. everyone else may be just fine with it.

That would be up to you but I still qt everything prior to adding it to my tank

Not using a QT tank before introducing new additions? Then take it from a long time old school reefer...your walking on water chancing that the ice wont break! Its not a question of if, but a question of when, I promise. When you consider how much time and money you have invested in your system, your out of your ever loving mind to not at least buy a 10 gallon tank and set it up as a QT tank and then USE IT!

It is amazing how people act on RUclips. I make free music production tutorials. I try to keep my production values pretty high, and I'm always improving. You'd think that people would be welcoming the free high-quality content, and most people are... but there is ALWAYS a least one guy that comes along talking shit. You get used to it. Now I just laugh at the absurdity. Just this week some guy said, "I like your videos, but you sound like Rush Limbaugh. Could you please modulate your voice to sound like Stephen Hawking?" WTF?
