    I made these last night. Don't add the extra flour. Just do as the recipe says. When you let it sit for an hour it doesn't stay sticky like that. When rolling it out, I used parchment paper to help me fold the dough when I got to that step. Also don't put the cinnamon sugar filling up to the edges so that you can make sure your edges are sealed better. It was definitely nerve racking because it didn't look right but just follow the recipe and it works perfectly!

      RecipesTested they were amazing! Also I forgot to add that I stuck the dough to rise in my oven that I had on super low like 200 (I do this with cinnamon rolls too to help them rise quicker) and it still didn’t rise much but it turned out fantastic regardless. The parchment paper with tons of flour was a huge help!

    I made these today, but almost wish I would have saw this video first. I also added more flour to the “dough”. I was freaking out over the soft cookie dough texture. My dough did not rise at all. However, once baked they were absolutely delicious. They weren’t fluffy but all in all we weren’t disappointed. I even made a cinnamon cream cheese icing to top them with 👌🏻

    Thanks for your video! I had the same result and found your review when I went searching for answers. I thought maybe my yeast was too old because I barely had a rise.

    I so LOVE your channel and your honesty! It is awesome that you show the ins and outs, the mess, the joy and the pain! I feel your pain on this recipe because we have shot several videos and had to scrap them because the food turns out really bad! It also funny how one day a recipe can work perfectly and the next it doesn't. On a side note, your knife rack behind you is really cool! 😊🌼🌷

    Hello, I just saw her make these on her show. I'm going to make them and let you know how I did. She put in a lot of sugar. In my sweet roll recipe I don't put in that much and I also use a glaze on top. Her concept on rolling the dough was interesting.

    I actually made this recipe today. Mine came out so good. My food processor took a dump, so, I had to resort to using my blender and add the filling ingredients little by little. I ended up using my stand mixer to finish blending the filling till it was smooth. I didn’t like that the filling had no cinnamon taste to it so I added 2 tsp more to it. I also added 2 tsp nutmeg and 1 tsp of salt because I used unsalted butter. I wish I could share my pic of my finished Cinnamon Squares. They are so good. And I did add 2 more cups of flour to the dough recipe.

    I tried these twice too before seeing your video and had similar results. It was so frustrating! I ended up showing the recipe to a pastry chef friend asking him if anything stood out in the written recipe that could be a mistake. He guessed the amount of white sugar in the dough ends up killing the yeast and that’s part of the reason the dough is so difficult to work with. He didn’t try making them, just reading the proportions he figured that would be the case. I’ve run into a few problems with recipes from this book. Such a bummer!

      It is! I was so excited to make these too! Some people are saying they worked out for them, and others are saying they got bad results like I did. I wish it would have worked because they look so good!

    No added flour necessary . My first time baking these tonight. The filling is a bit much, but that didn’t stop the finger licking of gooey goodness. I actually made these in the evening as a dessert à la mode and it was a hit!

    SAME!!! I added more flour too. The dough never got light or airy. Wish I’d have watched this before I wasted all these ingredients. I think this recipe needed to be worked out before it went in the book.

    I made these yesterday. It was scary at first how wet the dough was but then it rose a bit and dried up a BUNCH! I added more cinnamon and pecans to the filling and didn't make it super pasty and mine actually turned out great. I'll take a pic the next time I make them. Sometimes the amount of humidity can actually affect recipes that are this wet. You can cut down the water by 1/4 cup and that helps as well.

    Thanks so much for your review! I found your video after I noticed my dell has not risen very much. I too, added the extra flour because it looked so sticky and loose 😂 so I guess we will see how they turn out. Hopefully they are still yummy!🤞🏻Honestly even if they aren’t the greatest I’m sure my crew will eat them up!

    So sorry the recipe didn't turn out the way you wanted. I did click the link and buy the book because of all your other recipes reviewed from it! I get so disappointed when my recipes don't turn out because it is expensive and time consuming. I have found that cooking has a magic to it and sometimes it doesn't appear. LOVE your honesty and we have all been there!!😊🌼🌷

    I would say try them again!! Just don’t add the extra flour, don’t expect much of a rise, and bake on a stainless steel sheet. I made them and they are delicious, better than cinnamon rolls. And I love cinnamon rolls. 😂

      Yeast is super easy! Don’t be intimidated. As long as it smells like beer and looks foamy, it’ll all work out! This recipe is a flop according to a lot of people in the comments too.

    Followed the recipe as written, and these were a fail for me, too. Four cinnamon squares were eaten and the rest thrown out. I don’t plan on trying to figure out what’s wrong with the recipe, because “traditional” cinnamon rolls-of which there are many recipes out there-are easier to make and have more predictable results. Thanks for the video-it was very helpful, including the comments from others experiencing the same bad results.

      Same here. The recipe was a huge fail for me, and baking is my thing.
      For one thing, there’s way too much sugar in the dough. I ate one square and threw the rest away. They were awful. 😂

    My sister in law and I have tried these multiple times and have yet to succeed. Have you attempted again? We’re each trying something a little different this weekend because we’re determined to figure this out.
    Did you feel like the dough rose at all?

      Not very much, no but it did smell more yeasty If that makes sense. I haven’t tried this again but I really want to at some point. I will absolutely post another video for them when I do so stay tuned for that ☺️

    I just tried these and my dough was SUPER wet. I should've added more flour, but I stopped because it didn't rise at all after an hour (which one other youtuber seemed to say would happen, but she still liked them). Another website said it was too much sugar to add to the dough, that it would kill the yeast - but I don't think these are supposed to be very bread-y.
    Anyway, yeah, I'm annoyed with this recipe as well. And I can't find any good ideas about what to do to make it work!

One of these days I’m going to try them again and actually figure out how to make them right so I’ll have to play around with the recipe.     I am making these now and had to go online to see if there were any hints because the dough is really more like a thick batter. I was tempted to add more flour and did add a little before I stopped myself. Mine are rising now so I will let you know. I'm pretty experienced and was surprised that the recipe called for so much yeast and only 2 cups of pecans and 2 Tbl cinnamon. For that amount of dough, it seems like you would need more. I'm a little worried after watching your video.

      Ok, I doubled the cinnamon and added an extra 3/4 cup of pecans and they turned out great. Strangely addictive.
      You DEFINITELY needed to use the parchment paper (sprinkled with flour) when you fold the dough over and it helps to be gentle. I kept the dough at the sizes recommended during the rolling out and foldings by gently pushing it into the right size/shape so that the bars would fit on one sheet pan. The dough did not rise, well maybe a tiny bit and I left it for hours waiting for something. I don't know what the point of all the butter on the bowl was. I added 4oz of softened cream cheese to the glaze because I wanted to thicken it up a bit and the cream cheese was already opened. It was GREAT but that part of the recipe could have been cut in half.

    Just made these yesterday and they flopped as well. I think there is too much white sugar!
    Also, 2 cups white sugar and 2 cups brown sugar is 4 cups sugar = WAY too much sugar for only a 6 cups flour recipe! I wish Joanna Gaines would address this, is it an error or not?!

    I’ve tried 3 recipes from this book and have been disappointed with all of them and like you I blamed myself the first couple tries, now I’m thinking the recipes aren’t all that great

    Plus soooooo much butter, leaked everywhere and burned the bottom before the wet dough could even fully bake. I feel better though seeing similar results.

    I think it must be an error in the cookbook- 2 Tbls of sugar would make WAY more sense in this recipe (and even in the way the instructions are written).

    I just attempted these and was so disappointed. I ran into the SAME issues as you. They went straight into the trash can. After doing a quick Google search I'm seeing you and I aren't the only ones. My baker friends have told me there is WAY too much sugar in the dough. I hope the rest of the cook book isn't like this.

    There is definitely something wrong with this recipe! I watched your video and decided to go ahead and give these a try. There is not enough flour to even form a malleable dough. After baking, they are a complete disgusting disaster! I make bread every week and cannot for the life of me figure out what went wrong with this.

    You added 1 cup too much flour! On joannas's show she only added 1 extra cup of flour ( total of 7 cups) that's why yours were too dense and dryer than they were supposed to be.

      I just made these and added absolutely no extra flour and my results were exactly like this video… i feel so vindicated I am 34 weeks pregnant and I wanted these to be better than cinnamon rolls but they tasted like dinner rolls with some sugar sweetness in every other bite

      Yes I did tweak the recipe because I do know enough about cooking and baking to know when a dough recipe is not right for the consistency needed. If you’d look at the other comments under this video, you’ll see I’m not the only one who this recipe was a massive flop for. Such a bummer because I love so many recipes in Magnolia Table.

      I think it is extremely helpful to show a recipe “fail”, as well as the successes. Not all recipes turn out, and those with yeast can really be tricky. I’ve made another recipe out of this book, and I thought it was not good at all (her biscuit recipe). So I know I won’t even try this one. Plus, it just sounds like cinnamon rolls in a bit different way. I know how to make cinnamon rolls, so this recipe just seems a bit weird. I appreciate the showing of it for sure!
