    I think the 50,000 rounds per combatant killed in Vietnam vs 60k for Afghanistan is a good indicator of how inflated kill claims were in Vietnam when you consider the latter saw mass adoption of optics for riflemen and less obstructive terrain.

      You also got to take into consideration that The Viet Cong would get into close combat with U.S. soldiers to prevent them from using artillery. The dense jungle also prevented longer range engagements as well. I would also say documented deaths on the Viet Cong's side would be less documented because a big percentage of them were probably poor farmers with Mosin's or a rusty Ak that got blown to smithereens on the ho-chi Minh trail and no traces of bodies left. So if anything I reckon the Vietnam's casualty rates would be under inflated not Over inflated.

      @@dylanaquilina862 Casualty counts in war are notoriously manipulated. If directly asked off the record, almost everyone involved with the counting of enemy casualties will admit its bullshit. Specifically during the Vietnam war, some units had a policy of confirming enemy KIA off of blood trails, i.e. after contact, if you went and looked where the enemy was and saw blood but no body, you counted it as a kill when reporting to superiors regardless.

      Its not that they aren't expensive. When the US says we are giving "$1 billion in aid" they are saying the VALUE of the stuff they are giving will be $1 bl, they aren't going out and buying the vast majority of stuff being given. The practical truth is that it actually directly saves the US military money (in some cases) by getting rid of old stock that is simply sitting in warehouses waiting to be decommissioned (also for a cost). Its a bit of "government math" calculating this stuff. Its like if a business had a bottle of milk about to go out of date, and they donate it to a food bank and claim the full retail price for the donation, when clearly the actual value of the donation is not that amount.

Just a bit more gov't math, yadda yadda "oh we're only giving $800 mil this time" but more or less there wouldn't be a single fewer plane flying into Poland with gear.

    Reasons why supporting Ukraine was an amazing decision despite a few (VERY fee) disadvantages:
    -Ukrainians continue to keep their identity and independence despite Russia continuously denying their existence and right to exist (from comments made by many, including Putin)
    -China gets a strong deterrence from invading Taiwan by the precedent set
    -US gets to SAVE money by sending much of their older inventory which required massive storage and de-militarizing/scrapping costs (hazardous and sensitive components need to be removed, tracked, and stores safely)
    -Frees up room for more modern weapons and systems to fill in this gap, spurring industry
    -US, NATO, and its allies get an unprecedented look at military lessons that can be learned from this conflict thanks to their very close ties to one of the two belligerents of this war.
    -The other belligerent, Russia, is too weak, stubborn, prideful, and corrupt (much more than anyone on the other side, even the US and Ukraine), to make use of what they COULD have learned (as can be seen by Ukraine quickly giving up armored spearheads when they don’t prove as effective in comparison to Russia continuing to use them everyday in Avdiivka).
    -Russia getting militarily and economically weakened (how’s that Rouble doing?) to the point where they couldn’t even take advantage of those lessons if they could, much less become very relevant in the world after the war except as a resource servant for China
    -Speaking of China, they don’t have nearly as good of a perspective as Ukraine’s allies when it comes to learning lessons from this war. Plus, Russia and China supposed “friendship” has proven to mean very little during military conflicts. China and Russia in the future will both be very alone compared to many others.
    -Massive future job market for those wishing to rebuild Ukraine after the war, mostly from the US and its allies
    -An extremely anti-Russian and militarized state, indebted to the US and its allies, serving as a buffer to Russian expansionism in the future for many decades to come
    -NO US OR NATO DEATHS!!!

      Сам смысл "секретного плана" заключается в том, что Германия и Соединённые Штаты планируют снабжать Киев именно тем вооружением и именно в тех количествах, в которых украинская армия способна удерживать нынешний фронт, но в неспособна отбить оккупированные Россией территории.
      Рёпке со ссылкой на информацию из правительственных кругов ФРГ утверждает, что нынешняя цель западных союзников Украины - поставить её в "стратегически выгодную переговорную позицию". С этой позиции страна должна вести переговоры с путинским режимом о своём "суверенитете и территориальной целостности".

    Can a javelin be used to target a boat or ship?

    • @nvelsen1975
      @nvelsen1975 Год назад +3

      Of course, it goes where you direct it. The thing is: Ships are large. Yes a Javelin will penetrate it and proceed to agressively re-arrange the interior BUT, a Javelin is designed to blow up a space of a few cubic meters (the inside of a tank).
      To really destroy a ship you need a much bigger explosion, a bigger warhead, that's capable of destroying the insides, shattering walls and tearing apart the hull.
      The Harpoon anti-ship missile carries 221 kilograms of Destex explosive.
      The full warhead weight (including non-explosive components) of a Javelin is 8.4 kilograms.
      Firing a javelin at any decent-sized naval ship would be like firing a needle at a person: Yes it'll hurt, but you're not killing anyone that way.

    • @noonenoesbutme
      @noonenoesbutme Год назад +2

      Not very effectively. It's got a dual charge warhead designed to penetrate armor, and over pressurize the inside of a vehicle. The pressure is what kills the vehicle occupants. Wouldn't do a ton of damage to anything but a small ship. You also only have like 2km range, boats would likely be beyond this range. I went to the US Army's javelin missile School when I was in the army, and I am very familiar with the system.

    • @noonenoesbutme
      @noonenoesbutme Год назад +1

      Also, side note: anytime you see a huge explosion when a Javelin hits a tank is because it set off the shells in the tank. That's the problem with auto loading tanks, the ammo is right there in the passenger area. This is why the Abrams tank uses a manual loading gun. The rounds are stored in their own compartment, and if they all detonate then the explosion blows out the back of the tank, protecting the occupants. But oh man, while being able to survive the occupants would have severe traumatic brain injuries and possibly blown ear drums even with hearing protection on.

      Short answer: It's complicated. Long answer: At the moment, the war appears to be in something of a stalemate. However, given the difference in size of the militaries and their budgets involved, one can reasonably consider the current state of 'a stalemate with the possibility of long term victory' to itself be a massive victory for Ukraine. At the absolute minimum, it is a horrendous defeat for Russia. Russian commentators will often try to claim that they're at war with all of NATO, and thus it is the opposite, but the truth of the matter is that NATO has not and absolutely shall not commit to the war in any meaningful way. For the US, for example, much of what has been shipped was equipment meant to be decommissioned, and the costs listed by the White House are the amount it would take to buy a new system to replace the crappy old ones they had been about to get rid of either way.
      In terms of overall strategic position, Russia will never recover. Think about it; Two more countries have joined NATO, despite being traditionally neutral, NATO itself has gone from 'of questionable utility' to 'vitally important' in the minds of most of its members, Russia used their trump card/blackmail of withholding gas to try and force the EU to cancel their support of sanctions/ukraine and instead the EU has completely decoupled from Russia, and most of the other countries that Russia had a longstanding outsized impact on are beginning to rebel.
      Just take a look at the recent Nagorno Karabakh war; A war that Russian peacekeepers had been meant to prevent. Now they've been booted out of the region along with the Armenians.
      As for Ukraine itself, there remains the very real possibility that they're always just on the cusp of a major victory and only need one missing puzzle piece to turn strategy into reality. For example, if fighter jets like the F-16 allow them to fight on even or better terms with the Russian air forces.

      Well, Russia's already lost, it's a matter of how badly Ukraine loses at this point. Russia's political objectives were to isolate Ukraine from the west, to prevent the expansion of NATO, and to expand their petro-dominance. They've suffered dramatic failures in all 3

      Weird because so far US lost 0 soldiers and modern equipment vs Russias 50-100k+ soldiers, capital ship, submarine, fighters other planes and helos, 1000s of tanks, modern S300/S400 equipment, dozens of Generals and officers, crucial military and logistic building and vehicles (Modern ones also). Meanwhile US weapons companies are getting richer off this war giving away its old equipment.
      The Goal of the US is not to destroy Russia. it is to destabilize it internationally and show the world it is not as strong as its propaganda has said it was. Which so far the west has done a great job. Whatever the world view of Russia was as this "super power that is going to save the world from evil west" is pretty much dead now and many of its fans have lost faith.
