    I think being respectful of Korean culture is very important as well. I've met a lot of people who don't want to take off their shoes at people's house or restaurants, expect everyone to shake their hands or think they can leave a mess for everyone else to clean up. When I was in Korea, just showing respect for the culture opened up conversations and allowed me to make friends.

    • @skycedi
      @skycedi  5 лет назад +8

      Yeah, it's unfortunate that people feel entitled to people accepting them when they disrespect the culture. That's a good point you made about respecting the culture.

    Without living in Korea, I have been able to meet some amazing people. At least one of those places was at the Subway. A complete stranger assisted me with my luggage and we kept in touch ever since. The few times I have been there, I have found Koreans to be amongst the nicest people I’ve ever met.

      I'm happy to hear that you've had those positive experiences that turned into friendships! I can attest to that as well in that many Koreans will go out of their way to help.

    I think you left out networking.
    You did meet a lot of friends that way? But I guess that could go under similar interests🤔

    • @skycedi
      @skycedi  5 лет назад

      Very true! The networking could fit under "similar interests" but it can (and should) be it's own category. Networking was huge for me in meeting foreigner and Korean friends here :)

    Interesting. I have had Korean friends in another country (where we all were foreigners) and it was eye-opening. Very loyal but also some areas which I found hard (very intrusive at times, but it could be a question of personality) We were all Christians and had common values and views, so I don't know how it would be within a secular society.
    Edit. How has it been according to your experience in the churches in Korea - are there English-speaking groups/events, do they churches generally have translation provided, or are those who are visiting and do not speak Korean going to be totally left out? (not that I expect every church to cater for foreigners, but I have been in many countries where translation for non-natives was commonly arranged.)

    • @skycedi
      @skycedi  5 лет назад

      There are some churches to my knowledge (at least here in Seoul) that offer English translations during service but not too sure. There are also a lot of English ministries here where services are ran in English and is made up of many foreigners who speak English.

    I miss bars from the States... sit on a stool, have a drink and possibly talk with others around you..makes starting conversations easy and not really necessary to come with others...however in Korea they're basically non existent...I would have to go all the way to Itaewon for those kinds of bars and that's a trip coming from Yongin where I live(1hr20min)...all the restaurants here are designed for 2+ people at tables with no bars in the traditional sense....there's also not as many meet up groups in my area compared to Seoul...I will try the apps though

    • @skycedi
      @skycedi  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah, you're right. I feel like bars are a bit more open to random convos with strangers in the states depending on the area. The bars and places in Daejeon (where I used to live) and Seoul that I've connected with Koreans were all bars that also had a lot of foreigners also. Didn't think to mention that. Definitely try those apps out and see how it works for you!

    Did you have any teaching experience/ previous qualifications that relate to this position?? I heard jobs through EPIK are becoming very competitive and I’m not an English major and I don’t have any teaching experience. I’m learning Korean, but I don’t know if that’s enough to give me an advantage?
