Boy you’d think a country that can equip every cop like a soldier could equip every doctor like a doctor
Best thing I heard all day.
That tends to happen when you have conservatives more focused on the second amendment rather than the good of the people.
That reminds me of a poster from years ago which said "I want to live in a country in which the teachers have everything they need and the military has to have a bake sale."
Nope. SoCiALisM.
The doctors are working their asses off while soldiers are back at base.
"There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military (and their tactics) becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people" - William Adama
Finally someone with a brain!
_Base ships launching missiles. Forty… Correction… Fifty plus. Inbound. Half targeted on us… Half on the fleet._ -Felix Gaeta
_Target the ones going after the fleet. We can take the hits. They can't_ -William Adama
Isn't that part of the reason why we have the second amendment?
@@dottydew3673 If you think privately owned guns will stand up against the largest military in the entire world...
Funny how that show was all about slavers on the run from their former slaves.
The expression isn't "don't worry it's just a few bad apples" it's "one bad apple can spoil the bunch".
They can't be bothered to remember the rest, and it's optimistic in the first place to imagine they'd double check the meaning of an adage before turning it into their new cultist rally chant.
The expression is actually : one bad apple doesn’t spoil the whole bunch.
@Space Roamer Yes, knowing something about plant diseases, one apple with a bacterial infection could spread and turn a whole barrel of apples to stinky mush. Mr. Orange is actually the bad apple that has brought out the rot in so many others by basically giving them permission to do their worst.
the Problem are not the Cops. just the ppl making the Laws
I was married to a dispatcher. I hung out with cops. I found there were 3 kinds: 1. Those who truly wanted to be the good guys catching the bad guys. 2. Those who wanted a government paycheck and pension. 3. Authoritarian personalities who enjoy the domination of others. About 1/3 for each group.
Yeah there’s definitely a problem with the way the whole law enforcement system is structured, but I feel TERRIBLE when I see people trashing all cops, saying that they’re all terrible. Because I’m sure there’s a huge portion of cops who truly want to help people or, at the very least, know enough to not hurt people. Even if they’re just in it for the benefits and the pension, they’re not unnecessarily cruel and they just do their job.
But there are many, many cops who just like holding power and abusing it, and our current system just enables them, because there’s no real punishment or threat. And those cops are always the ones who make it on television.
I’m not saying the bad cops are the minority, but I hate it when people generalize all police as being bad.
DAVID SPONDIKE: I believe there is accuracy is your assessment. My future son-in-law is a police officer. He says MOST are very decent persons genuinely seeking to protect law abiding citizens; there ARE a few who get out of control. However, the current calls to DEFUND & DISBAND ALL Police Departments is a dangerous over-reaction. Thank you.
SOMEBODY PUT IT IN WORDSSS "authoritarian personalities who enjoy the domination of others"
granted you are absolutely right about the patriotic americans who become cops because they truly believe in helping their communities :)
@@mjcamck You are very right, keep in mind that the defund and disband police departments movement isn't about suddenly removing all funding it's about gradual change to a system more focused on prevention of crime in community support. Police are a part of society and serve a purpose to inhibit organized crime. :)
the amount of money we spend on law enforcement is absolutely disgusting. people live without healthcare, access to quality education, etc. and yet, your city's police department apparently needs a goddamn tank.
it sorta seems like a racket. Poor education system, rampant inequality, poor healthcare system = more policing and prisons.
I know, right?
Couldn't they just rent a tank when they needed it?
You know, from Hurtz, where I rent my tanks at.
😉
It’s because they serve at the behest of the rich, not at the behest of the everyday citizens. As the gap between rich and poor only widens they’re going to gear up their protectors.
Don't you think you'll probably have to spend more money on law enforcement though? Should probably train these blokes a bit more. Its not uncommon for cops to be trained for a year or more overseas. To be fair if they got rid of all the tanks and other dystopian bullshit that'd pay for a chunk of it but I doubt it would cover the whole thing.

The actual saying: "A few bad apples spoil the bunch."
Not "A few bad apples are ok as long as you eat around them."
How was that ever a viable argument?!
BOOM!!
@Neil Boerma actually .. it's not. The saying dates back to at least the Shakespearian era. Benjamin Franklin wrote it as "the rotten apple spoils his companion." Pretty cut and dry.
But thanks for coming out to pontificate!

We're not giving up our freedoms with these measures...we are ensuring that we aren't infringing on the freedoms of our fellow American citizens.
I do want things to go back to the way things were, when we had a US president instead of a proxy for a hostile foreign power, when we could go outside without playing Russian Roulette with our lives or the lives of our loved ones. We need to vote, and we need to vaccinate.
Full transparency, I'm a Canadian. I work 5 to 7 days a week. However, I fail to see how that is in any way relevance to the point that I made in the original post. An abundance of logical fallacies from everything from false equivalency to strawmanning and the unfortunate whataboutisms seem to all be the Hallmarks of what counts as intelligent argumentation from the current American Administration. I don't fault Americans for choosing this man, I really don't, as much as I'm loath to admit that. but his clearly divisive politicizing of this issue has been to the nation's detriment. I know ! I was just doing an essay on how the words you choose when you speak make a huge difference the other day. I think media rightfully describing Floyd's death as murder is a great example of that. I'm happy they are.
Yes. Not «tragic event» or other sad words. It was cold blooded MURDER.
I'm a cop. In another country. It's murder. I'm also a prosecutor. At work today we were discussing our jurisdiction's equivalent to second-degree murder, which is I assume statutory murder in my country (common law murder here is killing with that precise intent, statutory murder includes intentionally causing serious harm that results in death, serious disregard for human life, etc). We all agreed that we would give statutory murder a run. He conducted an unlawful restraint and refused to remove his knee even when the person in custody was saying he couldn't breathe. And members of the public were begging the police to get off him. And they tried but were threatened with spray (or potentially get shot themselves). When Floyd stopped moving, became unresponsive, the murderer remained on his neck for nearly 3 minutes. He is held to a higher standard than an average person due to op safety and combat training, as well as duty of care. I only saw a short snippet of the footage, however, he did not appear to check on Floyd's welfare or show any concern for Floyd's distress, nor his colleague's repeated requested to get off Floyd's neck and turn him over. So, although I cannot see how first degree (common law) murder would stick (we can't prove that he actually intended to kill Floyd beyond reasonable doubt), however, second-degree should be a strong case. Especially with the CCTV footage from a neighbouring business, and the MoP phone footage of the incident. The BWV on all officers should also be quite telling. I feel somewhat reassured knowing that the murderer would be having a horrible time in custody and will not enjoy his sentence at all. He is a stinking pustule to my profession, the type that sinks into the fabric and you can never quite wash out the odour, no matter how many times you try. It also breaks my heart knowing (and seeing on the street today and yesterday at work) that people don't feel safe, especially around me, a white cop. That is wrong. My presence should be reassuring, help feel safe. I serve and protect, all humans (and actually animals too) within my jurisdiction.
To borrow the ethos of our indigenous peoples....I cannot speak for others for that is their words, their knowledge; I can only speak for me. However, I am listening, I am watching, I want to help in any way that I can. Every waterfall begins with a single drop. Stay safe, be kind to each other. :)

Seth: Whoever wrote the "fractal" joke deserves a raise!
I don't think it was supposed to be a joke
Growing up in the late 60s, I had no idea what “Racism” meant. I was 6yrs young & walking into my 1st grade classroom. The majority of children were blonde/blue eyes. The only 2 that had different shades were me & Lawana. The teacher sat us in the back of the classroom. Later that day I told my mom, I didn’t want to go back to that classroom. She ask why. I told her the teacher doesn’t like me. The next morning my mom walked me into to the classroom. Realized the issue & took the matter to the principle. The next day I was sitting in the second row with the other kids. That didn’t change anything. The teacher began to mentally abuse me. Eventually she resigned. My mom believed in equality for humanity. Our best leaders start at home. Parents, it’s our responsibility to protect our children from the ignorance of others. I became the same role model to my 3 sons. They respect every human being/ culture/religion. The only thing that will change is believing in yourself. Love all humanity. God makes no mistakes. We are all his chosen. We are all beautiful. Start loving yourself & others will follow that example.
Amen teachers need the most compassion all are equal thanks Seth
That is not racism. Racism means that you think one race is superior to another. What you expirienced was bullying. Many people get bullied like overweight, big nose, short, tall, scrawny, stuttering, and even making fun of someones skin tone is not racism. It may be colorism but not saying one race is superior to another.

Derek Chauvin killing George Floyd was a bad apple. The county coroner attempting to cover it up makes it systemic. The fact that it took them 4 days to reluctantly arrest and charge him makes it systemic.
It was "the fastest any officer has been arrested", so there's that.

"A few bad apples spoils the bunch." is the whole phrase.
That’s right!
And it's literally because if you leave some bad apples in a barrel with good ones, they speed up the decay of the good ones. Which is a perfect metaphor for how the alleged good cops do nothing or actively protect the bad ones.
@@lorcannagle I agree, it only takes one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch; take that bad apple out lock him up & throw away the key!

The fact that the policemen felt safe enough to kill a man in the street, slowly, in front of everyone shows that its not just a few bad apples! the system needs to change.
And how many of the officers who have killed unarmed blacks has gone to prison? None. Oh, maybe one, but it was a black who killed a white. SAD!
You put a bad apple in with a bunch of apples and pretty soon they're all bad.
When you have 4 cops on the scene, with one murdering someone, and three standing aside, watching and letting it happen, you have more than a few "bad apples".
You suck at math don't you? Can you compare 4 to 10000? That would equal a few in comparison.
did the officer KNOW he was murdering the subject...who they had to pull out of the car with force...Most likely not. Cops have been kneeling on peoples backs for over a century. This was probably not what the officer expected to happen.
@@mattbatson8890 in their back, not their neck. The man was crying, he couldn't breathe!

@@mattbatson8890 are you guys insane?
Kneeling on someones neck is not something you might forget that it might probably maybe kill someone. Also 4 to 10k. Lucky that all the bad apples work the exact same shift. ;)
You are already calling them Bad apples. Treat them like bad apples and quickly sort the whole barrel.
Lack of accountability in a system without effective checks and balances breeds these types of lethal work environments. Whistleblowers are bullied into silence. Those exposed simply get transferred (so-called gypsy cops). Cops knowingly switch off their bodycams or allow the battery to run out in order to get away with crimes such as planting drugs on suspects or tamepering with evidence or even killing some black men every now and then - all because they KNOW that they can get away with it.
The irony of the "few bad apples" thing is that it is constantly misused. It's a reference to the pre refrigeration days, when you had to find tricks to preserve things in the absence of cold. One trick was putting those things that lasted a while, such as onions, potatoes, and apples, somewhere cool and dry. They would last quite a while if you did that, but it was very important to routinely inspect them. If one rotted, and you tossed it out fast enough, the harvest as a whole might last quite a while. If you let the rotten apple/onion/potato stay in there too long, the rot would spread and the entire batch would be quickly ruined.
In other words, "a few bad apples spoils the bunch" is actually about how if you don't root out corruption with vigorous inspections and actions, it will corrupt an entire system. Which is what has happened with the police. Corruption has spread and become entrenched and is now systemic.
The irony is that many people use the "a few bad apples" proverb in a way that completely inverts its message. They say it to suggest that the presence of corrupt individuals is not indicative of systemic corruption. How's that for historical irony?
Thank you for this! 🙏🏼
O.K. Professor 🧐

The original English proverb is "One bad apple rots the whole barrel". You're welcome!

@I used to be liberal I`m sorry Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left.
The problem is always "why" someone becomes a police officer, a president, a teacher, etc. The selection process for police seems to choose people who have no business being in a position of power, or no business being in stressful situations, or no business dealing with people - or all three.
There are two kinds of crooks one wares a uniform.
I feel the "why" is that most cops are the equivalent to the army "jar heads" they become police to be in a position of power and force, as being proven now by them attacking PEACEFUL protestors. There were so many quotable lines in this monologue I lost track. Great work Seth.
@@jeremysmith9694 Tanks in fact are not needed. This comes down to the goal of the police. Police are there to deescalate a situation, a tank does the opposite. Military on the other hand is designed to show overwhelming firepower superiority. So a tank is suited to military use. If the police need a tank they can ask for the governor to bring in the National Guard. There is a system that is in place so that each level can do their job. Some police forces have decided to act like military units which will inevitably bring a militaristic response. It doesn't help that we have so many defense contractors that if they can't sell their gear to the military they sell it to the police. A tank means that you have given up on being police and want to be a military. If a force treats the people like an enemy they will act like one. This is all from the lack of true action by the leaders in the country now and in the past who have not taken proactive action to correct how some police interact with society. We need to learn from other countries who police more effectively than we do with far less firepower. They understand the dynamic and that tanks are not an intelligent solution.

Systematic problem with our police starts with the fact that they literally spend 20 times more training at the range to learn shooting to kill than they do learning how to de-escalate potentially dangerous situations.
pop5678eye : Plus, at the police academies, the main lesson they learn is that they are always in danger out there and should always be prepared to defend themselves against potential wrongdoers. Meaning they are trained to shoot first, think later, and go out on the terrain terrified that everyone is out to get them. I don’t call that training, I call it priming young cops to make a lethal assessment.

And for him to imply it's only 0.1% is ignorant. Even if the number of truly bad cops was that low, there are a whole lot more who have been quietly ignoring it and refusing to speak up about clear violations of the law by their fellow officers.
Matt Harrell yes if there where only do few “bad apples” those “bad apples” and their crimes would be properly investigated by the other “apples” and they also wouldn’t just stand by while their colleague kills a man but considering no one in the police seems to care to stop them or even investigate them when something did happen there are a lot more than just 0.1%

The police aren't holding each other accountable. Cause it's still happening. It's like a kid, who beats up his little brother, is told to stop, but five minutes later does it again because words didn't hold him accountable.
If the problem was just a few police officers, they would have been arrested by all the other decent officers the instant they went too far. The issue is that these bully officers are being protected and defended by their fellows and the system they are part of. You cant sit there and claim that it is unusual for these issues to exist if the people in charge of stopping it are the ones defending it.

He already knew..hence the plan...
So...a couple of years ago here in the UK, we had a spate of attacks where terrorists would deliberately ram vehicles into pedestrians and those responsible were rightfully condemned as terrorists and murderers. In other words, they did exactly what those police in NY did. Wearing a police uniform while you do it doesn't change what that action makes you, nor does it excuse you from the appropriate punishment - if anything, the punishment should arguably be more severe for a law official to be acting in such a way. And while yes, I could see how a group of very angry people surrounding your car could be scary in the moment, the natural instinct would surely be to back away from the danger, not ram towards it. As Seth said, they should have reversed.
Honestly, if Trump wins this next election, I don't see how America can survive four more years without fundamentally ripping itself apart.
I only hope November 3rd and January 21st are not too late.

I was reminded of the rest of the phrase today, thanks to an educated person in an online forum I read. "A few bad apples spoil the barrel."
Bad apples ruin the *entire* barrel. You can't pick them out and everything's okay, the whole barrel is ruined because of the rot they quickly spread. Corrupt people can't exist alongside honest people, because honest people threaten to expose and punish them. They must either corrupt the honest, or expel them. A few "bad apples" visible in the police force means the entire force is suspect and must be thoroughly investigated. Maybe they're not all corrupted, but until you know, you must fully investigate each and every one. Any found to be corrupt must be fully prosecuted and honesty must be restored, or the rot will seep back in.
Also comparable to a garden. If there's a weed it must be picked out before it goes to seed and spreads throughout the entire garden. Indifference results in complete corruption.
