Thank you for all the advice & tips you offer in this video! I’ve been obsessing over informational RUclips videos regarding Katmai and yours is definitely one of the most valuable ones I’ve seen thus far. I absolutely adore your highlight footage video of your trip. You are a master!!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful video , I almost felt like I was there with you . Just an amazing job you did with this Bravo 👏 I will rewatch it this winter many times because I miss them during their long hibernation 💕
I heard that you put your name on a wait list and they give a buzzer similar to ones at a restaurant. Do they change out smalll groups every 30 minutes? If it takes you 10-20 minutes to get back to the place to enter the Brooks Falls gate were the Ranger allows entry, does the time start then versus from the time they set off your buzzer? Thanks for the detailed aperture and shutter speed along with photos ...very helpful. I am assuming you did not have a camera rain coat for your camera and lens based of your comments about it stop working due to water. Since then, have you vetted any camera rain coats that you would recommend? What dates were you there?
I didn’t see any buzzers when I was there but it’s been a couple of years so things can change. Because of the weather when I was there, people weren’t staying on the platform long so it wasn’t an issue. But the time would start at the platform, there’s a ranger gate about halfway up where they post up. On the one day I mention, where it WAS busy, we put our name on a list and went to the other platform to wait. Then they called our name when it was our turn. And they did have a ranger that would call your name thirty minutes later for you to leave. I actually haven’t used a water jacket for my camera since and I’ve shot in rain and waterfalls. I think this trip was just a bit much as my camera got rained on for a week straight with no opportunity to dry out. I honestly think any waterproof material would work though. I can’t remember the exact dates but it was around the first or second week of July I believe.
Yes. I would guess I probably lost at least two stops of light because of the thick cloud. It was more important to me to have a fast shutter speed so I needed to raise the ISO. Enjoy your trip!!
Is there a technique or trick to capture the fish near the bear's mouth or you just start shooting in high speed drive mode when you see the salmon jump out of the water ?
Great question. My dslr doesn’t have a high shutter speed so I tried to click the shutter as the fish got close to the bears mouth and took 3-5 frames.
This is a re-upload. I made a whoops when uploading the previous version, causing the footage to be painfully grainy and horrible.
Spectacular imagery! Thank you! And thanks for the photography details too!

Have a great trip! I hope you get great conditions up there. I’m jealous!
Love to watch on cams. Little bear in tree is so big now.
That makes me happy to hear! Would love to go back some day and watch the little guy as an adult fishing the falls.

Was your ISO so high because it was cloudy? Going in July 2024 and getting ready
Yes. I would guess I probably lost at least two stops of light because of the thick cloud. It was more important to me to have a fast shutter speed so I needed to raise the ISO. Enjoy your trip!!

do you set the shutter speed and aperture and use auto ISO?
I used all manual settings but that was mostly because we had rain/overcast skies the entire time so the exposure didn’t change much.
