  • I changed the oil on my 2013 Mercury outboard 20hp 4 stroke motor oil, and filter. Showed a step by step process how to change your oil, oil filter, and how to check your oil on this outboard. Parts I used were Quicksilver 10w-30 motor oil, a brand new oil drain washer, and a new Quicksilver oil filter.
Tips i learned were to run the engine up to temperature to make sure oil is warm, and will drain better and faster. The Oil filter requires a proper oil filter wrench as it got stuck on, but I managed to get it off by punching a screw driver through the end and levering it off. This is not recommended but it was all I could do to get the oil filter off.
This motor only requires approximately 1 litre of oil, I added about 1.2 liters oil in total. I followed my manual to the letter and found this to be very easy to do other then trying to get the oil filter off. There are some tips on RUclips to assist in removing a seized oil filter. Please feel free to leave comments or questions below. Cheers.

Glad to help. I have a few vids on my channel on my motor. I show a tip that’s less barbaric on removing the oil filter and I also have done a gear box oil change vid. Cheers

use a k & n HP-1008 then you will use a 1" wrench for remove/install, i alomost broke my arm trying to get the old filter off ! great video !

fullcirclejams thanks. I had to jam a screwdriver thru it and crank it off that way. I tried with a few different hand cranking tools. I will buy the right wrench and drill two small holes in the wrench so you can use two screws from keeping the wrench from slipping. Thanks for watching tho. I will have some future vids up on my boat.

There is a lot of oil in the filter left after the oil has been drained off from the engine. If the filter is just removed with the oil in it the oil will flow out of the filter and end up to the lower engine cover. I have used some absorptive paper that would prevent the oil from getting to the structures of the engine but this may fail and the oil will still get there. The first four years as the warranty was valid I took the engine to the professional service. There was never any oil leaked to the lower cover so there must be tricks on how to take the filter off without having a terrible mess of oil there. So there must be some tricks to be able to do the job in a clean manner. Last year I tried to tilt and turn the engine of a couple of times after the main oil drain was done. I think there was less oil in the filter than before but it still wasn't a kind of empty. Does anyone know how to do this properly?

I’m sure you could use some sort of vacuum to suck the old oils out but I doubt you would get it all. I did a vid on an easier way to get the filter off. But your still going to need a rag or like you said a absorbent paper. I just try to do my best to clean it up. I basically followed what the manual states.

where did you buy your supplies for the oil changes?

Tyler Goodpaster I bought the supplies at the marine parts supply store in the town I live. You can buy quicksilver oil products from any mercury dealer I’m sure. You might be able to get some of it on amazon. But I got mine from a mercury dealer in the end.

Why was it not "pissing" water when you cranked it up 6:20 or so..?

tommykib my water muffs were not hooked up properly more then likely. If they are off by a little bit the intake doesn’t pick em up. But I guess I never noticed it. But yes it’s important to make sure it’s pissing water. Cheers
