  • This decades-old Whistler kettle made by Gemco Ware still looks -- and sounds -- different from almost every other kettle. Chef Matt scored this one for $4 at a thrift store and puts it to the test.

The kettle is a good reminder when buying used stuff, we don't always know if there's a safety concern.
Ha, as soon as you said, "fire it up" the ad for the fire blanket came on. I remember there was a Gemco in La Mesa. I think we still have my mom's credit card from there.

Indeed on checking old -- and even new -- things you buy. Brand new cars are recalled every day, for that matter. Though unlike this kettle, they must be repaired at no cost. That's so funny about the old card. I think my mom used to also shop at a Gemco when we lived in Orange County.

I still have my Gemco card. Got it in the mid-70's, but it had already been around a while, though I'm not sure how long. I miss Gemco. Lots of cool products. Can't say if the glass kettle is one of theirs, but I wouldn't be surprised. Your kettle's condition is so good that it is hard to believe. Either someone really loved it, or it sat on a shelf forgotten for decades.

That’s cool that you’ve held onto the card. I remember my parents talking about the store, now that I look back on it. As for the kettle, I tried to find even a small crack that might compromise its integrity, but it’s solid! 👍

What a fun kettle! I really love your collections - you should do a showcase video sometime!

The "mystery" object looks like a cocktail muddler.
You could also use it to tamp down a fermenting vegetable like cabbage being fermented to sauerkraut to keep the fermenting product under the liquid level inside of a mason jar.
I am a sucker for vintage cookware and try to limit myself to collecting specific brands such as Revereware.

OMG, Revereware, right? I've bought several pieces at the thrift store and I just love cooking in them.

I'll have to look up Revere ware. Oh, they're similar to the Farberware I get at the thrift store.

I am very interested in hearing the answer to this one. Growing up, my mother did not own a lot of gadgets so most of these that you share with us are a mystery to me. It has been very entertaining for me to discover what these are. TYSM

I will agree with the some of your viewers that it is a bar muddler and I like your Detroit gear pattern shirt 😎

Indeed! They must have made well over a million of them, so I'm sure plenty are still around. Cheers.
