Gaby is probably the only one whose serve got worse with time...all her contemporaries got better, even the weaker servers like arantxa, conchita, seles.
I remember watching this match live back then. Gaby and Steffi were the 2 promising stars. Gaby even seemed to have more variety in her repertoire than Steffi. Unfortunately, her mental abilities were very fragile and she did not have the expected carreer we all expected from her. With only one slam under her belt, it cannot be satisfying for such a talented player. She should have won the French and did not even make it to the final. What went wrong with her ??????
Gaby beat Steffi 3 times in 1988/89 (Steffi had only 5 losses in total in those 2 years): Key Biscayne 1988 with 26 63 61 Amelia Island 1988 with 63 46 75 Amelia Island 1989 with 36 63 75 Ouch…. 😄
@@francinezane4076 Ouch, that absolute peak 87-89 Steffi lost only 5 matches in those 3 years but that 3 of those losses came against Gaby Sabatini in 3-set matches.
This was supposed to be the new evert Navratilova rivalry . Then a little skinny 15 year old kid with a loud grunt came along two years later and said, “ I don’t think so “ haha.
It's a shame Gabi never really got her act together - we see glimpses of her potential in this first set. Listening to her talk years later, I'm not sure she really enjoyed being one of the top players, and I think that explains why she retired so early. She mentioned how she was so shy and hated being in the limelight so much that she deliberately lost some of the big matches. Would love to know which ones they were.
@@zeddeka I’ve heard that before too . If it’s indeed the truth and she threw certain matches , it’s a massive shame . She did a lot for women’s tennis popularity in late 80’s and early 90’s and was very capable of being a 5/7 slam winner . She was a superb Tier 1 player but it’s almost like she only felt comfortable in Rome, Tokyo and Florida
@@CJJAK37 Sabatini's two biggest weaknesses were her serve and desire to win. She was an great athlete and had great strategies, but when it came down to it she just didn't have that second gear or incredible urge to be the greatest. I did enjoy this rivalry very much.
@@CJJAK37 She didn't throw matches. In a magazine interview I've read she explained that she didn't lose deliberately, but the anxiety she felt when all eyes were on her caused her to lose matches that she should easily have won.
Many happy returns of the day. Steffi Graf. Keep well. God bless you.
Graf-Sabatini, fantasticos partidos, bellas atletas
THANKS FOR POSTING THIS MATCH!!!!
Thank you!!!
Thanks for posting this match
Amaaaaaaaazing! But I just remembered I worn Gaby's perfume back in those days lol ;)
Brilliant first set from Sabatini - it's a shame she couldn't always be that positive and aggressive.

DON´T YOU HAVE THE 1987 ROME FINAL BETWEEN THIS TWO PLAYERS?
I've never found that match, too.

'Tell you this: my fantasy Charlie's Angels are Graf, Sabatini and Sharapova...all aged 21.
You need to get out more
Mine would be Kournikova, Dokic and Halep... all young and firm.
Replace Sharapova with Ivanovic and I would agree with you.
@@mbucd Dokic and young Halep had too big boobs to be very attractive. They looked weird.
Gaby seemed so tired after second set. She did improve around early 90s though
a PertSnergleman ™ production LOL ,,, what kind of name is PertSnergleman ™? Has such a beautiful sound. LOL. ooh that internal rhyme makes my day
Do you have 1988 French open ladies singles final?
Why? you need a really quick match to watch? lol

This match was a great example of Gabi's problems in the 80s. She could play a great set and would then conk out physically.

Are sure that Steffi and Alex Zverev aren't related? They have a very similar face.
Alex is Steffi‘s son from a pre-Agassi relationship.
@@carrerau7138 lol😂😂😂
Zverev is a Russian with no manners. Steffi would never raise such a neanderthal.
Zverev is the son of russian parents, as his surname suggests. He is no relation whatsoever to Steffi
