My first truck was a 1995 7.3 Powerstroke. The truck sat 3 yrs. towed it home dropped 2 fresh batteries in it & it started right up instantly. It leaked fuel everywhere, but she ran.
Just picked up a 97 f250 hd. 7.3 power stroke.. Extended cab. 4x4. 5 thousand cash. Runs. Needs shackles.. comes with new ones and even better springs.. I just gotta put them in .. o and new batteries..
Haven't read through the other comments and don't know if it was mentioned, but those solenoids are notorious for going bad. People jump them all the time. There is a two-prong connector for the glow plug relay. You definitely had a tach signal because you could see the needle bouncing as you were cranking it. That starter was really getting a workout lol 😅
Hi all, love the cooking oil use, as I used to run my old 1991 Landrover turbo diesel (as most are in the UK) on %50 diesel and %50 new cooking oil, but added a good "Splash" of petrol (ok gas) to it all to stop it getting too thick in winter plus it made it run very well.. try a "splash" of Gas in your truck maybe.. It's an old truck driver's tip here... Diesel prices in the UK have gone crazy also now at £1-87 per litre = to £8.20 a UK gallon.. stupid prices, sadly my newer Landrover Freelander turbo diesel with its factory fitted BMW engine dont like other fuels so Im stuck paying pump prices.. this is the most comical thing ever because international only developed the long block ford produced/did everything else) which is why the international i a dt444e because its makes less power(mechanichal lift pump and detuned pcm also differnt idm) its so funny because there not even close to the same engine in fact the dt444e has a different cam and block theres so many differences yet everyone refuses to believe they are just because the valve cover says international dont make it an international engine the 6.9 and 7.3idi(7.3idit ford helped produce) are international engines with ford accessories this is like saying cummins is a dodge motor because its in a dodge yet fca/stellantis just pays to use the engines and cummins is its own company (ford even had shares in cummins a few times that doesnt make it a ford engine or every ford with a cummins a ford motor) regardless point is im not gonna argue but truth is stop saying its an international motor when its not its a ford international motor end of story
Y'all had a lot of faith in that starter. Shoulda popped that fuel filter cap off and looked in there to see what was happening. Also for future reference if you're gonna spray starting fluid unplug the two prong plug on the glow plug relay. It disables it until you plug it back in.
If you worked on a few 7.3s I’d think you would know which battery terminal is what without looking at the battery… but hey mistakes were made it doesn’t seem like the pcm or anything got messed up.
Those engines don’t die. I had a camper that had a 7.3 in it and it sat for a year or 2 and all that had to be done was charge the battery and it started it did need new glow plugs tho
these 97s are the best of all the f- series ever made. mine is unbeatable. i parked it for 5 years after i got hurt at work. i just resurrected it for my dad. his 2010 f- 350 with v 10 ate two plugs and destroyed engine. this old truck was his only option to keep his travel schedule. it went from filthy and flat tires to like new and pulling a 14k lbs camper horse hauller. 200 mile trip no probs . only it wont pull 14 at 85 mph so learn some patience . every one needs to slow the f down any way . whats your hurry , live to run don't run to live.
My 95 powerstroke was parked over 5 years. i had used it to plow one day and it died. I never checked anything i just pulled it off to the side and never touched it for 5 years... Tried cranking it over and RPM gauge didnt jump. Checked the CPS and it was unplugged. Cranked 3 seconds and started
the 7.3 has a deadhead system so yes you could prime it with air but itll still have air which would cause it not to start or if your lucky to start but run like shit till the air bleeds out
I’ve jumped starter solenoids. I always have to use a screw driver and hold the handle. If I try to use me Leatherman, or a wrench it will shock the shit out of me every time. Doesn’t matter if it a truck tractor , car . Gets me everytime.

That pop around 5:00 in ..... thats most Likely a piston cracking...also You never want to use ether as your starting fluid. I talk from Experience and i had to junk that engine block and find another.Take it how you will but $12,xxx - $15,000 comes faster than you think on a rebuild. (buying a junkyard engine is cheaper but the machine shop will sometimes get you). Giving you a heads up is all. Now the real question is when will the hole appear ? I Had like four pistons that cracked and one of them that had a hole.

When the EPA started forcing manufacturers to build junk, those manufacturers should have all stood their ground if they didn't receive any "bailout" money from the government. Since that wasn't the reality all we have now is a bunch of underpowered crap that breaks down regularly and costs a ton of $ to fix.

the superduy 7.3 was 4 years not 3 99-03 my dream truck is a 99-03 7.3 crew cab dually 4x4 second emissions never killed the 7.3 there is not emissions on a 7.3 the 6.0 and 6.4 was killed by emissions and ford and international trying to make the highest hp and tq(which they did) but emissions ruined the reliability of the engines fun fact international only made the long block on the 7.3idit(93/94) 7.3 6.0 and 6.4 powerstroke the rest was put on by ford the 6.9 and 7.3idi were the only engines fully produced by international (other than fords accessory drive) the superduty 7.3 was the best 7.3 and also holds the record for highest milage in a diesel truck with original engine and trans with over 2.5 million miles(you can look it up if youd like truck was a 99 f350 crew cab 4x4 dually with a 7.3 and zf5) not one other engine has yet crossed the 2m mark even without major work or an og engine and trans closest was a 12v with 1.2 million but its had 3 head jobs and several auto trans replacements cummins is the second best engine out there and the 7.3 is the first both great engines(besides the 12v 53 block and newest 6.7 (which ironically blows up due to emissions) cool revival and love the backstory great video
also forged rods/internals are 94.5-97 and 99-01 02 and 03 are powdered rods(which are still just as reliable just wont hold 500+hp) but regardless you ether locking it will damage the rods and pistons/piston rings regardless there a balance to ether and diesel engines and you dont know it obviously

So I actually have a question about my 1997 OBS f250. So everything runs great but I’m having an issue with my truck sputtering. I get up to 45/50mph and it starts to sputter and Have to put it in overdrive and it stops! If you have any suggestions on what to check that would be wonderful! Just founds your videos and definitely a new sub:)
not true the hpop system will still push over 550psi cold the engine might turn over slower but cold oil actually increases oil pressure unless its a gel

Those engines don't want to start, but they will literally take you across the country once they are started.

Just got my first diesel and I’ve said this for years I’m getting a 7.3 and I did I traded a 97 xj with a 5 speed for a two owner 01 7.3

When starting a diesel after a long time PURGE THE AIR IN THE FUEL SYSTEM that is why it was a struggle to start

You have to mix lye and methanol alcohol to thin down the vegetable oil
It has a preheat system so you can run it straight
Situation like this with computer hooked it is wise to monitor icp. If it is a no start anyway.

the glowplugs actually run for about 3-5 mins as its warming up however you were ether locking it the 7.3 dont like either

They went to the 6.0 to meet the requirement of EGR, that's why emissions killed it. Had they not mandated EGR they might still be making them.

In 1994.5 they switched from the 7.3 IDI to the powerstroke so you can find an OBS with either 🤷🏻♂️
