Once the zinnias are 4 or 5 inches tall, pinch off the stem to just below the top 2 leaves. This makes the zinnias bush out and produce more stems and flowers.
yes absolutely it does.. this variety I planted doesn't seem to need it as they get really bushy anyways.. but I can see doing this for taller varieties, thank you Sandra..🌼
I can tell you have a green thumb, those were beautiful plants and I can't wait to see them blooming.
thanks Diane... I can't wait to show everyone this summer.. 👍❤🌺
I live in Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦 2 days ago. I directly seeded my zinnias in my garden, which is direct southern exposure. And to my surprise I have little seedlings popping up all over the place😊
That’s awesome! 👏
Wonderful video and adorable cats!!!!!
Thank you very much!
I appreciate you showing different points in the timeline, and for sharing your sweet kitties. I’ve never had great luck with Zinnias 🐿but will keep trying!
Glad it was helpful! , Bethany.. Zinnia just don't like to get too wet.. overall not the hardest to grow.. keep trying!
I really loved your laid back, 'it'll all be fine' vibe!! Also your cats are adorable 😄
Thanks for taking us along with you Diane. I learn a lot that way! Can't wait for updates. Happy gardening.😊
thanks Pat...for sure updates this summer.. you have a great garden season as well.. 🌺
What a nice, confident and calming manner of presenting! I really enjoyed watching your video and this year I am off to plant zinnias in my little British garden. Good luck to you Diane!
So nice of you, thank you Nadine... happy growing and best wishes to you...🌼🌼🌼
Thanks for the video. You did such a wonderful job explaining everything and you have a friendly personality. It is a joy to learn from you.
Glad it was helpful!
Miss Diane you have a gentle soothing voice. I can see your plants love you. It isn't as easy for me as it looks when you show us how it is done, but I will keep trying.
So nice of you, Hi Linda, I have been growing for many years, trial and error but do have the Zinnia down pretty well.. just love them.. have some neat ones growing in my basement right now. thanks for stopping by.. ❤
Super awesome video it my first time this year trying something new and trying to grow zinnias
Good luck!
Thank you for this video. I let my daughter pick out some flowers to grown and she picked zinnia. Can’t wait to grown them in our garden this year!
Wonderful! oh such fun.. really fun growing with your kids.. good experience for them as well.. good luck!
I love Zinnias n plant them pretty much all year long as I live in on the west central coast of Florida. I start them like you do in small pots n then transplant. My problem is the leaves turn so brown so I started to water at the bottom. They also get mildew. I just learned about pinching off the top to get them to fill out more. I also heard the more you cut the blooms the more flowers you’ll have.
I enjoyed your video.
♥️😊👍
I have problems with powdery mildew when outside… they need good air circulation and plenty of sunlight… thanks for sharing your experience.. 🌞
I am going to plant zinnias this year. Thank you for this informative video! Looks like kitty likes the garden
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for showing every step the way you did! This is year two of gardening at all and my first year I might do zinnias, and I thought this video was great. :) Can't wait to get some in with my veggies this spring!

Thank you for a very informative video, did you start planting in cells in mid April?
I'd say that would be close.. don't remember right off.. now I have changed my schedule and how I plant to help free up some time.. as I start the seeds in April now right in the cells.. either way works.. good luck growing!
You have done enormous efforts in this video. Thank you a lot 🌹🌹🌹❤❤❤
Thank you so much 😀
Wonderful video! Straight to the point and still so charming. Covered all the important information in a short amount of time + showed the process and mentioned dates 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 - not to mention all the cute cats and your sweet, down to earth demeanor. TNX you 🙏🏻❤️✨

Excellent video, I am going to grow my first zinnias and mums this year and this gives me a heads up as to the stages of growth.
Glad it was helpful! Hi Ralph, good luck growing zinnias, I have several varieties this year still in my basement under lights ..
Very nice! I can't wait to see them flower 👍🏾😊❤️
thanks... yes a update this summer sometime... thanks for watching!
We call that “kneading the dough” when a kitty paws like that!
yes they say it also resembles when they are young feeding off of momma.. they knead then as well.. 😁 thank for stopping by..👍
We call it making biscuits!😂
Very helpful!
Glad you think so!
Thank you for your lovely video!!!
Thanks for watching! Stephanie ❤
I like intermission!!!
thanks Gloria..:)
Hi do you keep the lid on so they won’t stretch? And until when do you keep the lid on? I bought a big tray with small holes for seedlings and want to give it another try but my seedling always stretch out a lot and I would like some tips on that, your video is so thorough and I love the cat intermissions 😊 thank you
Stretching is almost always a light problem the more light the better
Great job. They're beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Love your intermission!!
Thank You! 😁
Do they do well when direct sown? Love your video.
Zinnia should do fine self sowing I have meant to do this but never get it done.. the only thing that can happen some times is if you get a lot of hard rains it can uncover them and scatter them.. so a good thing might be to cover them with maybe card or something to help with that until they germinate.. then quickly uncover.. I was thinking about doing some this year if I have any room to do so... have a good season.. and thank you! 🌼
Hi Diane, I'm very happy to see your video, I'm going to give a try to grow some zinnias this coming spring from seed, I'm a rookie, how many hours grow light does they need per day? and what room temperature range require after taking them off the heating mat? Because I will do it in my garage. I live in south Ontario Canada, zone 5, thank you!
I have my lights on 12*16 hours a day.. I would keep the area at least 60 degrees .. sorry this is late been away and probably late but hope it helps anyway.. good luck Sherri..
Thanks so much for the video.. Love your kitties. It's so beautiful there. I'm stuck in the suburbs. Jealous of your rural. setting.
Thanks for watching! Nona, always been on the farm .. wouldn't know how to act anywhere else, love our privacy.. for sure.. :)
how do you prevent mold from forming in the cells? your plants look great
Hi Cindy, may be the soil , the dampness , your home humidity and so on.. here is some info have may help
The first and easiest method to kill mold is by using hydrogen peroxide. Pour 3% hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle and spray the outside of your pots, where the mold is located. Let it sit for a few minutes. You will notice hydrogen peroxide sizzling as it's interacting with the mold
Thank you for this video! This is my first year growing Zinnias from seed & they germinated faster than expected & got leggy. They are still thriving, but they are very tall. I’ve seen videos where people have transplanted other leggy seedlings sideways & buried the long stem in order to create a stronger root & leave the leaves above the soil. Any thoughts on if this would work?
I transplanted sunflowers, tomatoes and cosmos seedlings like that and they thrived. However I’m not too sure about zinnias because they are well known for having sensitive roots so I’m curious too 😅 Have you done it?
My zinnia seedlings also turned out leggy. Did you plant your seedlings sideways? Did it work?
@@00BeesKnees00 I potted up in larger pots & buried the leggy part. I believe placing them sideways would have worked also. They took right off after that. I also pinched off after the 4th set of true leaves & they are doing really well.
@@twohigginsahammer950 Thanks! I'm glad your zinnias turned out well. I'm going to do the same as you and bury the leggy part into the soil. That seems more easier than planting sideways which may require training the stem to grow upwards.
@@00BeesKnees00 I totally agree! I hope it helps! I wish there was a way to post a photo here so I can show you how well they are doing. Good luck!!
very informative i am grow Zinnias
Best of luck to you growing Zinnias, they are one of my fav's..
Could you go over your inside light set up over your table in another video maybe ? Great looking starts.
HI Tina, here is an old video, maybe it will help..👉🏻 ruclips.net/video/J-WdEHU_wMg/видео.html
Question for you. You said that you use a peat/ perlite mixture with bark. Do you have a recipe for that or just eyeball it? Thank you very much for the informative video!
Hi Krista, I usually buy the mix already mixed , called pro mix..
Here it is September and your video just now came across my RUclips feed. I like the idea of germinating the zinnias under lights. I didn’t see anything in your video about hardening off the zennias before planting outside. Do you harden them off?
I transfer out in my greenhouse for a bit then try to plant outdoors when cloudy, however not always.. :)
Great video. When did you start your seedling and what zone you’re in? I want to start zinnias indoors, I am in zone 7b. Thanks, RJ
I usually plant zinnias in April indoors and I am in zone 5. Plant outside mid to late May depending on weather..
Cool video 😎
Thanks for the visit
Do you have any videos on the basic equipment/setup to sow seeds for a total rookie? Without a greenhouse so prob need to do in my home?
yes I do, you should be able to search my channel, look under growing from seed thanks Jeff..
You make it look so easy...I am still a new seeder.😂
So nice of you... just takes doing it ... you will be a pro in no time.. :)
Hi nice video !
Thanks for the visit! 👍🏻
@@dianemummvideos you’re welcome, went bought me some cut and grow zinnias today 😃I’m so excited!!
I was just sitting here watching you and I thought what did people such as our grandparents do they did not have heat pads what was their way of getting seeds to germinate? Could you give me some of your thoughts on that please?
Hi Angela, warm room. I use to place on top of refrigerator years ago.. place in a sunny window..
Top of frig, top of water heater, etc
hi. thank you for an informative video. i planted zinnia & appreciate how the flowers fed the butterflies, bees, hummingbirds & more on our backyard. i noticed that some of the stems are drying & dying. is that normal?
is it extremely dry in your area? possible fungal issue.. hard to really know without seeing them and knowing your climate
I like your mister sprayer bottle… do you have one you recommend where you get credit for pointing me to them?
this is way late but here are a few I suggest.. amzn.to/419DqI9
Hello from northern Germany - I just found you here and I will watch all of your videos now! So helpful 👏🏻👏🏻Maybe I missed it but for how long did you have the lights on every day? Greetings from Maike
14 to 16 hours is typical.
Yes what Kathy has said.. I do 14 to 16 hrs day , and a timer is handy to automatic shut off the lights at night..
How would you suggest planting these in a climate like Las Vegas, without a heating pad? I am new to gardening and plan to start a garden at my sister's house. I'll be able to build a little shed/greenhouse where they'll be protected at the start before planting in the actual garden. I am bsessed with zinnias and want them to be my first flower to plant.
you are warm now and germination should be fine without a heating mat..
Love this channel. If your planting perennials do you take the bloom off also?
thank you Peach, yes I have done that and it really helps to settle in the plant ,they usually will form new better and more blooms.. 👍
@@dianemummvideos Thanks.
I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat ..I did..I did taw a puddy tat ! lol ! :) Thankyou for a great tutorial . I cant wait to grow some Zinnias :)
thanks Daisy...
How beautiful! Loved seeing the whole process and the happy cats! 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Thank you! 😊
Hi I was wondering if you put the Zinnias under light 24/7 until time to plant, or if you use a timer to replicate natural rhythms? I noticed what looked like a timer in the video but don't recall it being mentioned if used or not.
EDIT: Your video is great too, btw, and it explains the process of growing Zinnias from seed beautifully. It reminds me of the first year I grew them. I had great success, just putting the seeds right down into the soil in late May. However, that was 15 years ago, and while I have still have had some success, nothing like that first year when all the foliage was healthy green and every flower belonged to bouquet. Although I know I'm guilty of over watering the seedlings at times, causing the stems to dampen off, my biggest challenge remains in starting them indoors, and/or getting the PH right for my soil. I often wonder if the stuff we call "peat moss" is even really peat moss. I'm pretty sure it's not 100% peat moss because of all the pieces of tree bark and sticks I find in it, which to my knowledge peat moss doesn't produce.
So if my suspicions are correct and what we are calling "peat moss" is actually a blend of organic matter, I wonder if it's possible that you are perhaps buying a "better" blend of organics labeled as PM, and when I say better I just mean that it may have a PH better suited for Zinnia and other like-plants. Because what I find is that with the peat moss, and also the little "peat plugs" that they seem to be on the acidic side which tends to make the little sprouts yellow and stall in growth. Alas I try to add lime, to bring the green back to them, but can't seem to add enough (or maybe it's too much) as they continue to just remain yellow and stalled out.
Some seasons they eventually snap out of the yellow/stall stage after nursing with lime and nitrogen/food and resume to a luscious green, but by the time they do, they usually have brittle stems or other diseases have taken hold.
I feed with miracle grow (lightly as I would house plants 1/ teaspoon or so per gallon ) if/when they develop their first sets of true leaves. Some times compost tea.
Just looking for any tips or feedback if anyone else has these same issues with the little lovelies. Perhaps I've had bad luck with sketchy seeds in the years since my first season. I've been known to be a bruiser and neglectful at times when it comes to taking care of plants, plus the deer, birds, squirrels and my pets all seem to enjoy nosing around and chewing on whatever I attempt to put into the ground. It could just be Karma too i guess, lol. Anywho, thanks so much for the presentation and if nothing else it gives me hope that I can turn my pale yellow thumb back into green with a little love and tlc. Take care! :)
Rick
Hi Rick, thanks for your time of sharing.. I use a commercial pro mix.. peat and perlite mainly and get it sometimes at a local nursery or big box.. I also like to feed with either compost tea or fish emulsions.. this year the fish emulsions seems to be working great.. maybe the peat needs more aeriation .. more perlite perhaps.. overwatering can be a big issue that many struggle with and I too have at times..
good luck growing and stay at it, it can take trial and error I should know.. :)
@@dianemummvideos Thanks for your reply.. I've started adding a bit of lime to the mix and it seems to be helping. My other biggest issue has to do with over watering, but in a not-so-obvious sort of way, which I'm sure you can understand. My issue hasn't been with frequent over-watering, but simply from the very first time the soil is mixed with water (I always premoisten soil before adding any seeds or seedlings).
What I was doing wrong at times was over watering the mix the very first time, which would come back to haunt long term even once the soil dried out! I'm now realizing that if soil gets too wet, overly mixed and too soggy, even once it's dried out, and even once the water starts flowing through it again, the roots still simply don't like it- they die off, causing leave rot etc. Now I'm making sure that the soil is moist, but still has that fluffy quality before planting. After the roots have established it becomes nearly impossible to over water at that point as the structure of the soil seems to hold up and not become soggy due to the plant's root structure.
I appreciate your tips and videos! Looking forward to a bounty of beautiful Zinnias this year! Thanks again! :)
Nice video. What do you mean by "stretch"?
When they don’t get enough light they reach for it. Some people also call it getting “leggy”.
thanks Kim..:)
Do you trim them back once they get in the ground so they produce more stalks? I’m wondering if I should? I ordered seeds from Johnny selected seeds and they’re the Oklahoma series zinnia. I’d really like to see them bush out.
only if they are extremely tall... I would.. these were really nice and stout... other zinnia varieties stretch fast and those are the ones that would be ideal to cut back..
Diane Mumm Garden Videos I think I will try to prune them down a few leaves. They’re kind of leggy but not floppy or weak. I started them indoors six weeks ago, I planted them outside about a week ago and they haven’t really took off yet.
Can we please get an update on how those zinnias filled out? :)
Would love to see that
I did have a update video on my summer gardens. :)
So Beautiful! What temperature should Zinnias can handle at night? New subscriber 😀
I would say to stay nice and flowering at least 60 F , once it gets cooler the plant deteriorates at least that is what I have found..
Diane, I started my Zinnia in a pot indoors and want to move them to a larger pot outdoors. I tried this last month and most did not survive. I want to do it again but successfully this time any advice? Thanks in advance. Lesley
Zinnia are not always a fan of being transplanted... just make sure not to disturb the roots to much... make sure you soil is a good draining soil.. give them an adjustment period outside.. meaning adjust to the sun and wind gradually... good luck!
Great video! Do you harden off your plants before planting outside?
Here is what I do Brigid, I move my plants from inside to outside greenhouse.. where the lighting is stronger, the wind blows through and it seems to be enough.. I try and plant on a cloudy day also helps.. but not a bad idea to get the plants used to sun and wind slowly.. if you do not have a idea situation like I do..
I saved zinnia seeds last Fall and started them in February. Some came up and some didn't. They are looking a little leggy though. I didn't use a grow light because I don't have one. I do have them next to a south facing window. Should I push them down in the dirt more?
you can but be careful that you do not break the stem.. I also replant them in a deeper pot.. if necessary or wait till you plant outdoors and bury them close to the leaves..
Aww ty
you are welcome..
If I want to plant some for this year when should I plant them to germinate? I dont have a heating pad to use so I dony know if it will work?
I wouldn't plant no earlier than 4-6 weeks before your last frost. It really depends on how large of a cell tray you use, you can plant them earlier & have a bigger plant tray for when your last frost date rolls around, but you have to have them in big enough cell trays or pots to where they don't get root bound. If the get root bound they can revert back to single blooms instead of double! And no, a heat mat isn't necessary, you really only want to use a heat mat to increase temperature to around 70-75 (depending on the variety of flower some benefit from warmer temperatures) to get them to germinate faster. But as long as the temperature is over 60 in your house you should he fine.
@@ElderandOakFarm I'm pretty sure my cell trays are 1.5 by 1.5 each cell!
@@ElderandOakFarm my last frost is usually the first week of May! So I should probably start them next week?
@@Jessica_Crease87 I'd say that size would be perfect to start 4-5 weeks before your last frost, and then to be able to keep them in those trays until ready to plant in ground!
@@Jessica_Crease87 Zinnias usually only take 3-4 days to germinate!
Wish I had found your sooner. New sub.
Thanks for the sub! 👍
Do the rocks help to warm up the soil?
if they retain heat they sure could..
I heard your peafowl in the background, Ilike in FL and have wild indian peafowl in my neighborhood(60+) and they roost in the trees in my yard and hang out in my yard all day. Will they pick at the seedlings? I just planted seeds straight in the ground. I havent found any info on zinnia and peafowl.
yes I have peafowl, but they do not get to roam free.. to keep them safe.. I would not know if they pick at the plants, they do like green grasses and such .. so possibly..
Do you pinch them back to make them fuller once they get their true leaves?
I have never pinched back zinnias.. never seem to have too.. these always come in bushy.. hope that helps!
Would have been helpful to show how close your grow lights were to seedlings. The stages of raising lights too. Also hardening off-in S.E. Hardening off is a must. So much work hardening off here!
Please see my latest video …
Hardening off takes you being there and adjusting to sun and wind gradually … a few hours at a time … when I send the plants out in my greenhouse they get some good sun and air flow so that helps me when the zinnias get adjusted…
@@dianemummvideos I will look for it thanks!
Hey Diane, Am interested in starting zinnias from seed like you did. If I live in Iowa, when would I start them inside and when is a good time to take them outdoors for transplanting? thanks
I am starting my own approximately 10 weeks before the last frost date. Some people will tell you 6 to 8 weeks but I can’t help myself!
I start my Zinnias in April, and plant out in the ground mid May to end of May depending on our weather as you know really unpredictable.. they grow fast so if you grow too soon they get way to big.. smaller is easier to plant outdoors.. hope that helps and I know this is late.. been away..
What did your garden look like when it was done on your zinnias
Just beautiful they last well into fall.. I should have some videos on my flower gardens.. :)
Hi. I’m starting to grow my seeds indoors in the pot itself. It gets pretty hot here about 80-95 f and I leave them indoors facing the sun directly 10 hours a day in a clear window. I used regularly potting soil with 25% compost mixed throughout the pot. Will they grow this way?
Hi, they should grow but may get tall indoors.. with just window light. Do you plan to keep indoors.. they can handle that heat once they are climatized.. to your heat..
@@dianemummvideos Yes I plan them to grow indoors, however how can I climatize them? If so then I will terribly thankful to you Diane !
@@alm3257 gradually adjust them to sun and wind outdoors..
Good 👍🌼🌺💮💮
Thanks for visiting
Question: IF I have a grow light, should I place the cells under the light immediately after sowing?
Hi Concetta, I only do if they require light for germination..
Thank you so much! I planted some zinnias but they have reddish stems and I don't know why. (I live in really hot weather could that be it?)
not sure Kari..haven't seen that before and did not find any answers on google either.. do they look good overall?
@@dianemummvideos they look fine, some of them dried out but the others look good.
Mine have red stems. No problems.
Hi do you keep them of the heat mat once germinated ? I'm in scotland -
Hi Janette, no pull them off once germinated and place under your lights..
My zinnias are 4 weeks old and 2.5 inches high. Is that about right ? Do,you feed the seedlings ?
the growth really depends on the variety, how your growing them , etc.. sounds fine to me and don't worry they grow quick enough when the weather is right for them.. I have been this year using fish emulsions.. you can you any soluble fertilizer for flowers.
@@dianemummvideos Thanks. I moved them to larger containers last weekend and they are starting to grow now.
How much should I bury the main stem while transplanting the zinnias???
I have had bad luck with transplanting them.
I bury my stem as far as I can .. but you can try and leave a inch or so.. it will just help them out.. they can be touchy to transplant ..
... if you ever are bothered by rodents at all try peppermint oil in water spray or just a little oil on a cotton ball ... great repellant ... good on some insects too ...
How far away is the light so they don't get leggy ?
I usually just place a few inches.. some zinnias just tend to stretch faster thank other cultivars..
Hi,
I have a question.
I planted Zinna seeds. Its germinating very fast and then once it becomes 5-7 days old the plant breaks because of rotting.
What I am doing wrong? I water those plants everyday.
Hi, what are you using for soil?
@@dianemummvideos , I fix the problem.
Partly because of snail eating the leaves and not have enough sunlight.
Thanks for your concern.
What’s a heating Matt?
Hi Christine , it is a mat that heats the bottom of your trays, pots, etc, even heat for a better even germination.. search online ..
What should I do if my zinnia’s are stretched?
they do have a tendency to stretch.. I like to cut them back see video ruclips.net/video/QuQeWltGVRY/видео.html
How do you spell the type of zinnia you grew?
Zahara mix zinnias..
Great video, but I love your intermission eye candy!
Thanks for watching!
