The rules changed introduced in Monoliths did such a great job elevating this game to where it needed to be. It's a much cleaner, more engaging experience for me now. I would recommend this as the base experience, personally, and suggest the original as a castle/ally expansion. I can' wait to keep diving into this box.
The deluxe Monoliths is near the top of my want list right now. I have the base game and really like it and Monoliths seems like it's just going to make it better. And having the storage solution for when I inevitably end up with Campaigns + the deluxified tokens would be nice. Good stuff as always, Colin!
You have by far the best playthrough I've seen. I use RUclips video to learn to play games as I struggle to understand rulebooks do to cognitive challenges so I really value your time and quality yo put into your videos :)
Seems like you got it sorted, but I believe any time the portal was damaged, you're adding the '-1' tokens technically. They just cancel out an equal amount of the added '+1" tokens. It makes this Outsider really nasty and tense! Makes any healing on the Castle you can get so important, it's quite a fun little race to get big enough swings out there, while constantly being flooded by roots.

Edit: Yes, volume 4 seems complex 😅 your video will help a lot haha. I will say that if you have volume 3 (sand of Shurax) though that one is the most complex.

You are adding -health tokens every time you attack (they just immediately cancel out with +health tokens and are removed when both are on a card), so those portal abilities should have triggered. I believe the Skytear Protector card says to gain stat boosts when you gain mana during the alliance phase, not the mana gained during the horde phase at the beginning. You use their own exhaust ability (or some other card like the Spring Watch mana gain) to get the bonus. Agree that the Monoliths suggested first game horde (called Monoliths) has too much of a focus on minions and isn't as much fun. Especially when paired with the suggested first Outsider which also buffs minions to start. It could leave a bad impression if that's the only game someone played.
I believe that ally that could exhaust to move and deal damage can deal damage even if it doesn't move since the ability doesn't have moving as a cost. This game doesn't use the oddball logic of LotR LCG where everything before the word "Then" must complete in full. LotR LCG is amazing but they really dug themselves into some strange holes with rulings rather than issuing errata cards to follow standard logic rules.
I completely agree with the Monoliths Horde being a bad (first) opponent. I'm an experienced Skytear Horde player and didn't enjoy them at all. Played on difficulty 2 and within a couple of rounds I had minions with 5 and 8 health. Still managed to pull a win but man if that would have been my first experience with Skytear Horde it might have ended on my shelf of shame.
I just played original game for first time yesterday. It was fun but i literally ran out of cards by 5th or 6th turn so had to stop the game. The new rule to exhaust castle and spend mana to draw a card would have helped me 😂 least i know about it now
@@MeetMeAtTheTable no I mean I ran out of cards in hand and couldn't draw any more because I had nothing to kill monsters with (all Ally's had died and just had tower and spell card that didn't do damage)

Hi, Nice video like usal, but I think you made a mistake with the Yetnar Minion against the Gibbet Tower. Each turn the gibbet tower apply -3 attack to the minion but he has 5 attack power so he should have strike your castle for 2 damage during those 3 turns. Anyway, that's how I understand it. After thinking about it, I think I must be wrong because all the text on the card is considered an ability... sorry.

did you have to unsleeve the cards when you took them out of the box, then resleeve them to put back in the box. It looks like cards in box sleeved
Yup! I do that for all my games so I reduce glare when recording!
