What's a Pigtail

- Single Point Connections are Faultless Connections. I heard it when I was just a young apprentice and I have never forget it. Of course we have all worked in a box with a lot more wires than just one, so what are we supposed to do with all these wires.
Pigtail! Pigtail 2, 3, 4, or even 5 wires!
Some people (especially in the residential market) want to push speed more than quality and like to stab wires in the back of plugs and switches. We call those "Holes of Despair" because while they might be faster right now, they will cost you countless hours in trouble shooting or long term electrical failure.
Correctly Pigtailing is a true mark of a craftsman. Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast. Take the time to pig tail your boxes and everyone coming after you will thank you!

Nice video!
Good video! Thanks
I am a late bloomer when it comes to DIY and I appreciate this advice.
This video was very well done. I had watched many other videos on this same topic and was not all the way clear in my thinking on pigtailing. This video was the one I should've watched first.
Best video on RUclips explaining as to WHY we should pigtail! thanks (:
Excellent 👌 You have a future as a teacher when you retire maybe😅😅😅. Truly, you have a gift for teaching.
This was very clear, was about to add one outlet and thought I had a plan.. This made for a better install. Thanks Brother!!
This really helps make sure no one device causes a problem to the whole circuit. Appreciate the support!
Thank you!
Bro, that intro was clean…wtf
Thanks for the video. As a DIY'er, I'm always looking for tips like these to help me improve.
Subbed
Gary thanks so much and please if there is anything you run into and need a little specific guidance feel free to him me up. Josh@EmpoweredKC.com
😊😅😊😅😅😊😊😅😊
Thank you for taking the time to make this helpful video.
I remember when I didn’t have a clue what I was doing… wait that was last week 😂🤦🏻♂️ Thanks a ton for following along.
Great video!! My grandpa taught me this when I was learning.
Sometimes I feel like I was the last person trained by the previous generation! They have so much to teach!!!
Really helpful video, professionally done.
Just Subbed. Please continue with these videos
Thanks a ton! We have a decent amount made and will continue to push these out. Also if there is something that you specifically want to see let us know. We will try and cover it or heck just message me Josh@EmpoweredKC.com. Have a great day!
@@empoweredkc Yes! If you could show how to replace old ceiling lights with new LED ones that would be super helpful
@@snrtaco on deck ❤️❤️❤️
Great video. Thank you!
Thanks a ton. We are trying to "shine the light" on the trades.
great vid thank you
It would help to have more lighting and closeups on the wires. Otherwise we have to imagine what the wiring looks like from what you say.
Andy, totally agree and with each video we are trying to get bet closer and better ❤️
Awesome channel & content. Your videos are top notch. Great videography, graphics and sound. Keep grinding and this channel is going to grow.
Here's a future video idea: How to do a re-wire or replace a home-run most efficiently with minimum amount of drywall damage. Any tips and tricks you've learned over the years that would be helpful to new guys getting into the field. Thanks.
The Guys at IntrepidCreative.co make us look way better than we really are.
Ps. Exclude Drywall repair in your bid 😂🤦🏻♂️ great idea and will think about how to show that… honestly it’s really freaking hard.
Wago Connectors ......love the logo
The only video I could find with a proper, clear explanation. Thank you!
I froze, my old plug has 4 wires and new usb plug has two screws ... so this pigtail will really help!
Can i ask, what about one really short black wire and a long one. Can you strip the long one and attach short one further down where it touches, pigtail at that point then proceed to make a one point connection? Or do they have to be even?
While I agree with using pigtails, your comment on "holes of despair" is wrong. That is a spec grade receptacle you're showing and does not have backstab holes. Those holes or openings are for back wiring where tightening the screw clamps down on the wire. It's a legitimate option, installers choice. The mud ring should be installed to complete the rough in, no? Good job over all, thanks.

what are your thoughts on Wago connectors? Seems so much easier to implement and just as effective, but what do I know? Great video BTW
Peter thanks a ton. The guys at Intrepid (www.intrepidcreative.co) make me look and sound so much smarter than I am.
Regarding Wagos: I used a ton of them when I was a first and second year apprentice but feel wire nuts are a better option now. But, I think if you feel more comfortable using them just make sure
1. that all the wire is striped to a similar length (ensuring enough copper is making contact inside the wago but no copper is exposed outside causing a arc hazard),
2. Make sure they slide straight into the right slot (if they go in at an angle they won’t properly grab),
3. Just like wire nuts, give them a little tug at the end and call them good.
Wago lever nuts. 👍🏼check out sparky channel if you haven't already . Great detail and information.
What kind of wires are those that you got for the pigtail?
Same gauge as the circuit and they are just precut from the same rolls of wire. If you’re a DIY, you’re probably using Romex and so just strip it and cut to length. For a ground, you can buy green sheathed pigtails.
Boxes surface mounted on aluminum studs? Is this a demo wall?
Yeah, we built this wall to show basic installation. We were trying to film on job sites but the lighting and sound made it really freaking hard.
Use Wago's, piker.
Dude..Did you play Crisp in kindergarten Cop??
Question, I had an outlet in my bedroom in which I did not want any longer so I disconnected all wires from the outlet so there was a total of 3 whites, 3 blacks and 3 ground wires. I put a cap on each wire individually since I wanted to patch the outlet hole with drywall, but now my bedroom light doesn't turn on. Should I just pigtail all blacks together, all whites together and all ground wires together, is that safe? Will that restore the bedroom light?
It sounds like you broke the circuit so nothing downstream of that point will work. Pigtailing the wires together as you suggested should work, but you cannot put drywall over that box or patch the hole. That is now a plain junction box and must be accessible. Put a blank cover on the box and you're done.
"holes of despair, never use these holes"... there is a reason why there were manufactured and installed on those outlets.
Understood, but once again this is about how to avoid future problems, just like the NEC is the minimum. I've never had box make up issues or circuit interruptions because of a plug. Avoid those holes and hook and pinch your wires.
Skip the stupid "music"!
Honestly I would say skip the whole stupid video... but thats just me.
I muted the video because of the music, but I’m an old guy😉
