What's a Pigtail

  • Single Point Connections are Faultless Connections. I heard it when I was just a young apprentice and I have never forget it. Of course we have all worked in a box with a lot more wires than just one, so what are we supposed to do with all these wires.
    Pigtail! Pigtail 2, 3, 4, or even 5 wires!
    Some people (especially in the residential market) want to push speed more than quality and like to stab wires in the back of plugs and switches. We call those "Holes of Despair" because while they might be faster right now, they will cost you countless hours in trouble shooting or long term electrical failure.
    Correctly Pigtailing is a true mark of a craftsman. Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast. Take the time to pig tail your boxes and everyone coming after you will thank you!

    This video was very well done. I had watched many other videos on this same topic and was not all the way clear in my thinking on pigtailing. This video was the one I should've watched first.

  • @javonhelling794
    @javonhelling794 6 месяцев назад

    Can i ask, what about one really short black wire and a long one. Can you strip the long one and attach short one further down where it touches, pigtail at that point then proceed to make a one point connection? Or do they have to be even?

  • @surferdude642
    @surferdude642 Год назад +2

    While I agree with using pigtails, your comment on "holes of despair" is wrong. That is a spec grade receptacle you're showing and does not have backstab holes. Those holes or openings are for back wiring where tightening the screw clamps down on the wire. It's a legitimate option, installers choice. The mud ring should be installed to complete the rough in, no? Good job over all, thanks.

    what are your thoughts on Wago connectors? Seems so much easier to implement and just as effective, but what do I know? Great video BTW

    • @empoweredkc
      @empoweredkc  3 года назад +1

      Peter thanks a ton. The guys at Intrepid (www.intrepidcreative.co) make me look and sound so much smarter than I am.
      Regarding Wagos: I used a ton of them when I was a first and second year apprentice but feel wire nuts are a better option now. But, I think if you feel more comfortable using them just make sure
      1. that all the wire is striped to a similar length (ensuring enough copper is making contact inside the wago but no copper is exposed outside causing a arc hazard),
      2. Make sure they slide straight into the right slot (if they go in at an angle they won’t properly grab),
      3. Just like wire nuts, give them a little tug at the end and call them good.

    What kind of wires are those that you got for the pigtail?

    • @glasshalffull2930
      @glasshalffull2930 Год назад

      Same gauge as the circuit and they are just precut from the same rolls of wire. If you’re a DIY, you’re probably using Romex and so just strip it and cut to length. For a ground, you can buy green sheathed pigtails.

    Question, I had an outlet in my bedroom in which I did not want any longer so I disconnected all wires from the outlet so there was a total of 3 whites, 3 blacks and 3 ground wires. I put a cap on each wire individually since I wanted to patch the outlet hole with drywall, but now my bedroom light doesn't turn on. Should I just pigtail all blacks together, all whites together and all ground wires together, is that safe? Will that restore the bedroom light?

    • @surferdude642
      @surferdude642 Год назад +1

      It sounds like you broke the circuit so nothing downstream of that point will work. Pigtailing the wires together as you suggested should work, but you cannot put drywall over that box or patch the hole. That is now a plain junction box and must be accessible. Put a blank cover on the box and you're done.

  • @marcostudd
    @marcostudd 2 года назад

    "holes of despair, never use these holes"... there is a reason why there were manufactured and installed on those outlets.

    • @empoweredkc
      @empoweredkc  2 года назад +3

      Understood, but once again this is about how to avoid future problems, just like the NEC is the minimum. I've never had box make up issues or circuit interruptions because of a plug. Avoid those holes and hook and pinch your wires.
