For any of the UK viewers who are listening to this - He was negotiating another RTE radio contract when he released a statement that annoyed the head of RTE, and they turfed him out - That is why he is in the UK now. He told the Irish nation that we "are all in this together" during COVID, while at the same time taking secret payments under the counter, which he said he would pay back, and never did.
Most of the Irish TV license payers feel like they got robbed by Ryan Tubridy in a hoodie (or maybe an Arran jumper).
I suspect most UK listeners don't care about all that.
Man/Woman you know everything, I do not know that much, but none of us know the full truth, Yes he got very well paid, very few of us would refuse good extra money if we were offed it, personally me I would take the money and give a lot of it away to the most needed
Living in the U.K. 22 years, I stopped listening to RTÉ in particular about 10 years before Covid even started, because aside from being total cringe, it’s standard of news reporting was very poor, not trustworthy, accurate nor reliable in the time that I had been coming home to Ireland, travelling over and back across the Irish Sea - and I also felt the same way about U.K. MSM outlets - my gut instincts were to not trust what was being put out there - I started to feel that Ireland was losing its values system and the Ireland that I left was changing in all the wrong ways, it felt wrong

Tubridy was effectively sacked by RTE in the wake of a financial scandal in which he was a key player. No other station in Ireland would come close to matching his ridiculously inflated fee. London was the nearest big market in which he might reinvent himself, this time without relying on his many, many family connections in politics at the highest level, going back to the foundation of Ireland as a state.
Any other comment is just PR spin, or outright lies.

Tubridy jumped before he was pushed. He could have come clean about the money but he didn't. Interviewer get your facts straight, he was not dragged into anything. He didn't correct the record about his pay and that is on him. His " thing " was to play the man of the people, I feel your pain, we are all in it together. It was all nonsense. I'm surprised he didn't play the, all Irish people are begrudgers card. Ask his colleagues how they feel about being shafted by him. Now he's a victim, give me a break.

Tubs is a nice guy and I personally like him. However the ‘Events dear boy’ was in fact a financial scandal at RTE which Ryan was at the centre of after he didn’t properly declare extra payments which topped his salary throughout Covid at €500k (!!!) while his colleagues were being laid off and taking cuts as the network apparently was running out of money. It was a major scandal and he had to leave his job at RTE radio (sacked) because of it. This is why he is in London.
😊Times Radio you went very gentle on him. I remember during covid this man on his tv show telling people to donate to that nights charity while he was paid HUGE money - part of it covered up and kept secret. He's articulate but dont be fooled by his bookish exterior - he had nowhere to go media wise in Ireland thats why hes in London.

Apart from the massive payments scandal that resulted in him leaving Ireland, he also had a very controversial and widely criticised tax situation. Then there was his radio show that involved him talking incessantly about all the freebies he got from various companies, and all the freebies he wanted to get in the future. All of this was hidden behind a very odd "Toyman" persona which he invented for himself but everyone could see through. Good riddance.
Ryan didn't leave Ireland - he under disclosed the salary he was paid by the publicly funded National Irish TV and radio station RTE, the Irish equivalent of the BBC. He "left" his prime time TV show weeks before the press were alerted. He essentially defrauded the Irish taxpayer - he refused to refund the Irish taxpayer for the work he didn't undertake - he was fired by the former Ofcom and now director general of RTE Mr Kevin Bakhurst. He is loathed in Ireland and can't get a job there.
He's not hated by everyone a lot of people think it was all blown out of proportion and wish him well in his new job. Usually the UK tend to recognise the talent from Ireland that we don't always appreciate. 😊❤

But, please, don't make it sound as though he was some edgy young talent who was rejected unfairly by the Irish people and forced to seek his fortune in London. Ryan Tubridy is a fifty year old multimillionaire who got where he is via nepotism, as have so many who've worked in RTE since its foundation. The man effectively defrauded the taxpayer. If he wasn't the grandson of Todd Andrews, he'd be spinning discs on some local radio station and the majority of us would never have heard of him.

I don't know if he returned the money or not but my understanding is the money came from Renault, not from the license fee.

You'll find articles explaining it such as "Tubridy received three payments of €75,000 in exchange for planned personal appearances for Renault, under a commercial agreement that was struck with RTÉ. But because RTÉ agreed to underwrite the deal, the taxpayer ended up on the hook for two of the payments after the car manufacturer backed out."
The most important thing Tubridy needs to do is to apologise to the people of Ireland. The second thing he needs to do is hand back all the money he got that wasn't declared. Why didn't he do this immediately? And why are we still waiting for him to do it? He's proving to one and all that he's not the honest and open person he had pretended to be for years, but is instead the grasping, greedy guy we all know now he is. Why he would want Ireland and the world to believe he is a decent, honourable guy is beyond me, especially when Ireland and the world now knows he is a greedy, grasping vindictive guy with no sense of honour, dignity, respect and duty. He's interested only in the money and nothing else. If he refuses to give it back, he will never be trusted in Ireland again.
He does not have to apologise to anyone. If you asked for a raise and got it, would you apologise? We all know the answer to that, don't we?
He needs to apologise for leaving Irish viewers with the WORST host in Late Late history. And to go lower than Pat Kenny takes some doing,but by god Patrick Kielty has managed it. RTE will regret what they did to Ryan.

Yes, no doubt Tubridy welcomed the bit on top, but when that became a national scandal, it was then up to him to step in and make things good again, by giving back the money. God knows he doesn't need the extra few bob, he's already loaded, and has boasted of making loadsamoney from his investments. So he could have saved RTE a lot of time and trouble by simply saying, 'Lads, I made a mistake, here's the money, I shouldn't have taken it, very sorry for all the trouble caused, hope this helps RTE get over this hurdle and get back to making brilliant programmes again without all this hanging over it.' But he hasn't done that yet, has he? I presume he would welcome a return to RTE and his natural audience, and many Irish listeners would welcome that too, though not all. Patrick Kielty is proving to be a better presenter of the Late Late than Tubridy ever was, so Tubs is never going to get that gig again, even if he wanted to. Radio-wise, he has a good chance of getting back in there. Oliver Callan is an extremely boring presenter of Tubridy's previous morning slot, I have no idea why RTE decided to give him the job. The guy who interviewed Michelle Doherty a few weeks ago sounded to me like the perfect replacement for Tubs.
@@markc8956 Mark, I'm sorry, I disagree totally. Patrick Kielty is the best thing that has happened to the Late Late Show since Gay Byrne's retirement. Kielty is a true professional, he is just great; he knows when to be funny and to slip in a joke, and knows when to be serious and allow the hurt to speak. To my mind, he is the best presenter since Gay Byrne. He is a wonderful talent and a gentleman to the core. I wish him the very best going forward.

He "gave up" hosting Ireland's Late Late Show because he knew in advance of the scandal and PR mess about to erupt over his extra salary that was hidden from the licence fee payers of Ireland. If that wasn't going to erupt, he would not have left his €500,000 a year salary for a one hour a day radio show Mon - Fri and his two hour Late Late Show on Fri for around 37 Fridays a year.

He didn't repeat it. It's what's known as a "pre-title sequence" where they play a soundbite from the main body of the interview at the start. Very common practice. The equivalent of "pull quotes" in a newspaper interview.

Imagine if you will, the most talent free, hack of a talk radio host youve ever heard...... A man who lets say, was lucky to get a graveyard shift on a regional radio station. A pure charisma vacuum, technically inept at his job and with a speaking voice and cadence not appropriate to radio...
Now imagine the BBC hired him because his grandfather was Winston Churchill's bessie mate. They then proceeded to groom his as the next Michael Parkinson by awarding him primetime radio slots and the biggest chatshow on the tv station. They also gave him secret, undeclared topup payments to his already massive pay packet while all his colleagues took pay cuts and the station itself was continually seeking government bailouts.....
That's who Ryan Tubridy is.

For British people, this guy was being paid money which was over and above his declared salary as a public service employee. When confronted about these additional payments, he claimed that he wasn't aware of those payments that were in excess of his actual salary. He also had separate commercial arrangements with his shows sponsors that he apparently was unaware of too. His explanation for receipt of all of these payments that he received for years, did not wash and he was removed from irelands national broadcaster. Irelands gain is Britain's loss.

RTE scandal aside, what's always irritated me about Tubridy is the fact that he seems to see himself as as much of star as whoever he's interviewing.
A good interviewer never tries to be the star themselves.
Ryan's Fianna Fail family background and beliefs always came to the front in his political interviews. One funny moment happened, when Irish impressionist Mario Rosenstock was doing an impression of a Fine Gael politician and Ryan burst out laughing, with Mario saying "I know you are a Fianna Fail man Ryan, but you don't have to laugh that quick".
