- In this video John attempts to replicate a training week from the legendary Ron Hill, running twice per day Monday through to Saturday, with a long run on the Sunday. Can he do it around a full-time job, like Ron did?
He takes you through the reasons why Ron Hill should be considered Britain's greatest ever distance runner.
There are essential running and life lessons to be learned from the career of Ron Hill. Find them here.

I met Ron Hill at the 2009 Cloud 9 Hill race and said hello and he was really nice, true legend.
Ron Hill my childhood hero.
Thank you for watching, Nigel.
Great video about one of the true greats of UK running. A true inspiration
Thank you. He really was! 👍
Wow, I never knew much about Ron Hill before, but watching this made me realize what an incredible athlete and human he was. The way he balanced his full-time job, family, and still managed to train every day is truly remarkable. It's amazing how he achieved so much without any special advantages in life. I think Ron Hill's story is a reminder that with determination, willpower, and a love for what you do, you can achieve greatness. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire runners for generations to come. Thank you dears for sharing this incredible tribute to an extraordinary man!
Yes we can apply those things in our own lives. We are all human.
Very thoughtful video. I agree with you that the type of person you are must also be considered as a measure of true greatness. I agree that Ron definitely was an inspiration to many runners, including myself and I would consider him one of the truly great athletes in the sport of long distance running. It's the struggle and the courage to take it on that is the true mark of greatness, He passed that test with flying colours, His wife and children can also take some of the credit as they were always fully supportive of his efforts. He himself pays tribute to his wife's support of his goals.
Yes May who was left to pitch a tent at around 11.30pm at a camp site so Ron didn't lose his streak that day 😉
I used to be a distance runner and had trained occasionally with ron and his mate Vincent regan, to me he was definately a legend and a nice fella to boot, who was the best and a god to me ib the early days has an aspiring club runner.
Must have been great to have known Ron personally. 👍
Ron Hill was an absolute legend, his books are so inspiring! Was very privileged to get a mention in his book on the history of the Manchester marathon, such a great bloke!
Thanks Darren. I believe you won the marathon where I ran my first sub 3, having been inspired by Ron. Sheffield 2002.
@@tworunningbrooms haha that’s going back a few years! Always a good day when you break the 3 hour for the first time!
Really enjoyed the video! Well done.
One minor correction: Ron was in the third team when he came to Manchester University, not the third best runner! There were a dozen or so quicker...to start with!
I also note that the University relays are now named in Ron's honour.
Thanks Bruce. How long do the relays date back to?
@@tworunningbrooms 1967. Every year since including a virtual relay during lockdown. Open to both clubs and universities, with prizes in the region of £2500 thanks to generous support from Ronhill Sports.
Great video, thanks for putting in the work to educate those of us who knew next to nothing about him. Fantastic spin on it as well, by incorporating your feat of emulating his training week. Given how he liked to give back to the community etc, I wonder if he would have made a RUclips channel back in his heyday, if RUclips had been around?!
Thank you Kathryn that's very kind. As Ron never used to miss a trick to further his running prowess I like to think he would have done.
there is a documentary called "Visions of Eight" and there is a segment on Ron Hill. it was based on Munich Olympics, made in 1972 or so
Yes, thanks. Great documentary! 👍
What's also incredible is that he was never injured enough to not be able to run. I'm sure he battled through minor niggles, the odd blister, or even carried on running when he had a cold. How do you guys manage with your high training load and staying injury free?
Well Mike, I (John) was uninjured for about 10 years training like this. Last few years have been horrendous as I neglected S&C. Ron actually 'ran' on crutches when he broke a sternum.
I think the point is you can do more than you think.
But everyone has a cutoff point. Ron's was extreme. Ours is more moderate.
Absolutely fabulous insight to Ron Hills Running career, who is also an idol of mine too. I always wear his shorts & vest tops in races as they are really comfortable. I never knew he won the Boston Marathon & also that he broke the then course record by 3 minutes. Cracking video👏
Thanks Kevin. Glad you learned something new, as I did when making it.
Fantastic video, great to learn more about a national hero! Right time for a 10 hour week I think! Usually do about 7 so will build up slowly 🤔
Absolutely. It's the way ahead.
Informative, inspirational, a little joke and this video brings in to context a reference from an earlier video about fish and chips 😂👍
Always looking to inform, educate and entertain. Like the BBC...
Cracking insight, I basically knew nothing about ronhill, I know a bit now 😊 thanks John !! Good running yourself too. When are doing Linford Christie, next week ?
I'd probably beat him over a marathon, so no. You might also like to know that Ron thought that taking on drinks in races wanted running time, so just used to suck on a sponge.
He probably got that wrong, but he was only running for just over 2 hours so would overheat less than we would.
@@tworunningbrooms I couldn't drink from a sponge, but credit to Ron for doing that and saving time 😃
Great video. Difficult to disagree but if community, giving back and running races/terrain are criteria then Brendan Foster could be a candidate. Maybe the quality you refer to is Humble. 🏃♂️😍
Good shout. I expected people to maybe come back with Farah or Radcliffe but hadn't considered him.
I had some questions that maybe you found out about Ron's training. Do you know if tried to stay away from cement/sidewalk/road running as opposed to running on grass or dirt. also do you know how much illl training he did? Thanks for the video
I'll ask a friend of his. My impression is that he did most of his training on the road.
Please can you tell me where is the colour footage of Ron from?
I found it on a RUclips search. Some is from a 1972 Olympics preview I believe.
@tworunningbrooms thank you
