    I think they made the right call, if he waits for Jonas and Yates he lets the peloton get closer too and it may give other GC teams an incentive to chase where as now only the sprinter teams were pulling. I don't think the possibility of gaining a couple of seconds on Pogacar was worth the risk.

      Maybe, but I just can't help think who was left to chase anyway. Agreed. Also, no guarantee that Yates would have taken turns on the front if Wout waited for him and Jonas. Maybe Yates would have acted like an anchor and the peloton would have caught up. In the end, it was only an 8-second margin for Wout.

      After what we have seen from Pogačar over the last two years, if I were Jumbo, I would try to take every chance to put him under pressure I can get. And it is pretty obvious, that his team is pretty weak on this terrain and he was a bit out of position. But Jumbo has too many side projects and doesn't focus on the task ahead.

    • @donadams5094
      @donadams5094 2 года назад +42

      @@beckobert Green is not a "side" project, nor is Wout winning stages. He is one of the best riders in the world and at his peak. He serves the team brilliantly in many ways, both on the road (think Paris-Nice stage 8, in which he practically carried Primoz to the finish) and with the sponsors (think they like day after of 24/7 Wout coverage at the biggest race in the world?). And even with Wout and Laporte on the Green team, TJV still has the deepest climbing team in the field. If one of their GC guys doesn't win Yellow, it won't because they lacked support. It would almost certainly just mean that Pog was too good again.

    This is a great long term play. It’s a 21 stage race. This gave WVA a larger gap in the yellow as well as the green, plus the stage win. It also allowed TJV to sit on for a free ride when everyone is killing themselves to pull back WVA. In stages to come, TJV will now have those matches to spend to further their team and their GC contenders. 3 of the top 7 ain’t bad.

    WvA made a judgement call coming off that climb. He knew how fresh he was and how fresh his teammates were. He knew he had the legs to go for it, as well as teammates behind who could possibly slow the train. The peloton failed. If they’d stopped thinking about their individual teams and worked together as a solid group, they’d have brought WvA back easily. He was pulling away for half of the flat because the peloton couldn’t get their shit together. It was the perfect storm and WvA profited. The peloton should have seen this move coming. Wout should NOT have waited for Jonas. There would have been much more of an impetus to chase if there had been a GC player up front pre-cobbles, particularly since a lot of Ineos and UAE were in the second group. If they’d committed to the chase from the off by adding to the sprint trains, given they still got within 8 seconds even with Alpecin being totally unaware Van Aert was still out there, they’d have almost certainly mopped him up and the stage win and top points would have been out of the question.
    Van Aert was flying on a move that would have won him a Monument at that point - let him do his thang. The team will thank him for it later.
    First non-mountain, non-TT stage won by the race leader of the Tour de France since Fabian Cancellara ambushed the peloton in 2007 - Van Aert is the Cancellara of our generation, and probably even more versatile.

    Good decision making by WvA: had he waited for Jonas, GC teams would all have chased pedal to the medal. Even if they didn't catch them, they would have carried Yates with them, who would not have helped one bit obviously, and then he would have jumped them on the line, with his more than decent sprinting abilities

    This was Wout's day. Wout taking a win in yellow with Jumbo on his chest will be worth /loads/ of publicity to Jumbo across the Netherlands and Belgium. Wout and MvdP are big stars and well-known outside of cycling. Publicity for Jumbo-Visma with Wout winning stuff is great for the sponsor. Getting Wout a stage win in the early stages was no doubt a team goal, simply for the publicity. And doing it in the yellow jersey even better.

    The shot at 2:45 The 6 Jumbo Riders in position, It was obvious at this point what was going to happen and non of the commentators called it. And then here at 3:02 INEOS move to the front on the decent, to stop the Jumbo train as they expect what will happen to keep riders within the front of the race to disrupt the Jumbo plan, I think it was good race craft from INEOS to break it up when they don't have a rider to compete for the stage, non of the commentators mentioned this...

      Jumbo is pretty much always in that position in the final 30-40kms of a stage. So them sitting there certainly was not a sign they would do it, but they do were in the right position to do it :)

    just after the race I though it was a terrible gc mistake not to wait for jonas but now with some time inbetween and whatching some analyses I think it was the right thing to do. Bora, UAE and Bahrain would have chaised with sprint teams and so it would have been really close... and remember bursting over the top of a hill gives you an advantage and wout would have completely destroid it by waiting for adam and jonas

    Hours later and people still have not come to a consensus about whether WvA should have waited for Vingegaard and Wout had to make a SPLIT-SECOND DECISION!
    I think he made the right call. The chase was really disorganized early on, some riders didn't even know he was up there in front. If Yates and Vingegaard would have been with him, all hell would have broken loose and the other teams would have immediately chased like crazy and caught them pretty quickly, I'd argue.

    There's a big if in waiting for Yates and jonas. All the other GC teams would have chased. Theat means bora, UAE, baharain. Then sprint teams, alphecin, internachey, lotto etc. Gruphama might also chase. This could make it difficult for them. So i guess it's a diffucult call. On the other hand, if those three started pacing, we might have seen panic mode with pogacar and bunch splitting to further pieces.
