Great video. My grandmother lives in a small town and dollar general is the only store. She really likes it because her store now has fresh fruit and vegetables. She also likes it because it's a smaller store so it's less walking.
Dollar General is a little expensive ,but it is cheaper than our local corner market!! It would interesting to see what types of meals you can create 🙂
I would love to see some DG meals. I like DG because if you live out in the middle of nowhere there is usually a DG in your area. I also like the convenience of DG when I just need to pick up a few things because it's only 3 miles from my house and I usually wait and go on Saturday so I can use that $5 coupon.
I vote - yes - on you making DG meal plans. My DG is a full on grocery store; and a lot of the newer ones are primarily that way. It has a produce section with all the fresh produce basics - apples, oranges, lemons, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, peppers, lettuce, cucs, etc., etc. I do get the Clover Valley everything for good deals. I usually like to hit DG and DTree before heading out to a traditional grocery store. I get what I can at those two locations, then head on further to Target/WalMart/Kroger/Aldi - depending on what area I am doing my errands. I eat vegetarian and gluten free, so I do then also occasionally splurge on foo foo food for me at my local health food store - Fresh Thyme (like Trader Joe’s). So I def run the grocery store variety! All the way from DT and DG to health food stores, with discount and regular stores in between. But yes - DG meal plans, please
I love Dollar General. I have one 2 blocks from my home. So I get items from there frequently. The one in your town looks way better than the one in mine though. Ours is always out of stock of everything and items are always in the wrong places.
The food sections looked really good, but the clothing/winter wear was a mess, lol. This store was in a more rural area; lots of farmland surrounding it so it looks like it doesn't get as busy.
In rural areas Dollar General is often the ONLY grocery store you have. When this is the case the stores tend to be well stocked and offer more selection than the Dollar General stores in more populated areas that have more stores. Prices at Dollar General in my rural area are always lower than a "regular" grocery store.
I think of DG as a convenient Wal-Mart. Easy to run in if you just need a few things as opposed to parking & walking all around a big store when all you need is superglue.
I’m always interested in seeing what meals you come up using ingredients from different sources. I did smile when you stressed that the cheese is real cheese at the General. I couldn’t believe it recently when I picked up a package of Creme Cheese from the Tree and yep, it was not Cream Cheese haha... I didn’t notice until I tried to cook with it, I think Palm Oil was one of the first two ingredients listed.
blessed my city has Dollar Tree with freezer and groceries, we also have Family Dollar and Dollar General. Not sure when it took place back last year but Dollar Tree owns Family Dollar but the prices are still high in Family Dollar. I prefer shopping at Krogers, Food Lion (if desperate), Walmart and sometimes Sams club which is just like Costco and BJ's which we also have smh they gonna get your money one way or the other. I miss finding salvage (discount) stores
I agree, not the best prices. I live in a big city so I have choices, but not bad if this is all you have. I do coupon here for household items. Plus around the holidays they give out great coupons for their Clover Valley brand flour, sugar and brown/powdered sugars. ✌
I think a Dollar General cooking video would be interesting. The one near me is located next door to a Dollar Tree, so I usually just go to DT to pick up some cheap staples before heading to ALDI to get the majority of my groceries. We also have Dollar General Markets, which are full blown grocery stores with produce.
I get a lot of our cleaning stuff at Dollar General. I used to drive for USA Truck and the terminal was in Vandalia Ohio, we went through Huber Heights if we went shopping or out to eat . We took our Trucks to go shopping.
I have to agree, Dollar General is very much like a convenience store. But there are times when you just don't want to go into a large crowded grocery store and it does make it more convenient to run in for a few items. They do have ads and there are times I'll see a special so I'll stop by to pick those up those items. Between the refrigerated and frozen foods, the canned goods and dry goods, you could surely make some nice meals. You would definitely need to set a limit and probably not be able to make $5.00 meals. But with the variety and larger size of some products you might end up with more leftovers. It would be an interesting challenge. This might also make a good challenge to clean out your freezer and just buy things to complete your meals. I know you just worked on emptying your freezer so the timing might not be just right for that. It would be a shame to buy frozen chicken there when most people have chicken in their freezer all the time. Yep, interesting type of challenge. I know I would have to approach it differently. The most efficient way I can see this challenge is to just buy filler items, things you need to complete a meal. Or for comparison sake you could pick up specific items for a meal and see how much it is to get the necessary things at Dollar General as opposed to some place like Walmart. Some things I get at Dollar General are the chocolate mint cookies for $1.00 that are as good as the Thin Mints and you can get them all year round. If I'm in a Dollar General I often pick up some 'cream of' soups to have on hand. There have been times when I just needed a loaf of bread and it so much easier to run in there than trying to get out of a busy grocery store with one item. You may have to think about this one Jamie. This is not really like your other challenges. This is less of a place to be frugal and that makes it harder than your usual challenge. But while you were going through Dollar General I thought of another place that has surprisingly good deals and most people don't even think about this place having anything affordable.
Thank you for all your input! I think if I do a few of these meals it just won't be very often. But you're right; because it's not busy, it's perfect for those who don't like crowds.
I was able to find a deal on the app recently, they had $2 off of $10 for their Clover Valley brand foods, I bought their canned goods and rice, etc. I have to be more careful next time to just buy what is on my list, because it reduced the amount I got off at the end when I overbought. But that and the $5 off on $25, made that my favorite store that day😁
Appreciate you so much many of us have been there, almost no money for food, walking to the store, and many of us are only a paycheck or two away from that again so let's support each other and be kind, we are all in this together!
The closest DG is far away so I've never got an opportunity to visit one but this looks no different than Family Dollar. If I'm going to pay over $2 for something, I might as well go to my local Walmart lol ☺
Well, it would put a twist on the DT meals and put more variety in them and at the same time u could try sum of the DG food like the meat and go from there but use them to supplement the DT meals instead . And use either the sales or penny deals and I thing they also use IBOTTA as well as digital coupons so u can save money as well while doing it .
I live in a rural area and Dollar General is our go to store for convenience. There used to be one I could walk to which was great. They built a new one and closed the close one. Dollar Tree is an hour away so unless I'm headed to town, it's not an option.
It may be interesting to watch a DG video of course but I don't want you to have to waste your money going there if all the products are overpriced like you observed. Maybe try it once and see how it goes?
I chuckled when you pointed out the high price of quaker oats bars, they are 2.99 a box in canada on sale like a 1.99......our dollar stores don't have a fridge freezer aisles all I kept thinking was I want lol....2 pound bag of chicken breast, yes please.....would be around 10 dollars here......I love our Dollarama one can buy Wonderbread for a 2 dollars ....lean.ground beef ina one pound tube is 5 dollars here, at a grocery store where they ground up beef is closer to 7 a pound. Awful isn't it.
@@NoGettingOffThisTrain yeah it can be....and having two teen boys omgosh within two days after the locusts descend into my full fridge after I do grocery pick up, its empty. Right now I am Mother Hubbard lol.
I live in Dayton, Ohio! I think a lot of stores differ, even though it's the same store. People have told me that their Dollar Trees don't have a freezer or refrigerated section.

So many good food options! Especially cool and freezer foods!! Thanks for taking us along with you😀

I'd like to see a DG meal video. I love these videos. I agree, DG doesn't always have the best deals. I can get a lot of the stuff cheaper at Walmart.
Dollat General's website is worth looking at too. Recipes and you can order online for delvery (non perishables). Thanks for the video and comments.
My mother had really bad crowd anxiety when I was growing up. We did a lot of shopping here vs a grocery store because of that reason.
That's a good reason to go!
Feel this. And small towns have them .. me being in Los Angeles we don't.. I love going to my moms!
Yes. I would like to see u make dollar general meals have. A great day.
I have tried the oreo national delight coffee, and it was super yummy. I think 3 for $6 is a good deal on those too!
Nice walk through! I don't think I've ever bought groceries at a DG....other than snacks when on vacation.

Looking forward to seeing more creative videos like this one....

It’s about learning to use them coupons with the 5.00 off 25.00. Like with the 2.00 off clover valley items. Plus more deals.

As far as the food goes, I'd much prefer this store to a dollar tree any day.
We don't have anything that large or nice here in South Florida. Our DGs are like super small, no good items and a mess!
Where I live we have a Dollar General AND a Dollar General Market.... Same company.... Much more groceries to choose from in the Market.
I wish our dollar general was this well stocked. The location one town over is much better than the one here.
Thanks, Ive never been in a dollar general.
The prices are higher at DG due to a lot of the time it's the only store around
