The review page on steam is usually not all that useful.
You can just look over near the tags, see that it says "Overwhelmingly positive" and know that this game is probably pretty good. If it's not good, it'll let you know. Scrolling down to read the reviews is usually not worth your time.
However, one day I was feeling curious.
Why do these people hate this "Overwhelmingly Positive" game in the first place? And why did they feel so strongly about it that they wanted to leave a review? And most importantly, is there anything useful we can take from their opinions?

But it definitely didn’t feel good to have to resort to using it. It didn’t make me salty, but it made me feel WAY less excited about completing the game.

@@cubeofmeat4982 Yeah, but the slowdown mode tho. That one is literally perfect for this game, since timing and execution is the main difficulty. It lets you fine tune the difficulty for your level of reaction time. Dash assist is also well made, especially if you're on joystick controls, letting you initiate a dash in the right direction every time, but you still need to time the dash, since you can't cancel it once you hit the button.
I never used it, but my brother did for the last screen of farewell, and he said it felt fine, quoting "It doesn't feel like cheating, I'm just telling the game that I need it to back off because I'm not having fun, and it does"

THIS. I consider myself pretty good at platformers/metroidvanias (I did The White Palace's Path of Pain in 30 hours but still) when motivated, (This will come in later) and when the game offered me assist mode, two things popped in my head:
      1) This is a really hard game and I should be careful
      2) This is here because people can't complete the game without it
I wanted to prove to myself that I didn't need it (I literally said "I don't need help) and I didn't wanted to experience the game to its fullest.
The assist mide actually made the hame seem harder than it actually was, and after doing 7A, I asked, "Is there a way to make it harder?"
Then I found B-sides and they are much more in line what I thought the base game was going to be.
When I find something too hard, I stop playing and take a break for a day to recharge. Then I can complete it. I only did it once in the Mirror Temple when it was 11:30 at night and I couldn't handle the stress from tbat chapter anymore.
B-sides are making me take breaks because of how hard it is, not from stress or exhaustion. I like it. Every cleared room is a victory.
As of yet I'm on Golden Ridge's B-side and assist mode remains off. I'll updaye this if any changes happen but this is all for 8A amother round in a few days let's die another 1,000 times
P.s. I took the "Be proud of your death count" postcard to heart, I died 856 times in Oshiro 😊
      Edit:
I'm in the last room of Farewell. Assist mode remains off. Badeline has talked to me twice. I'm so determined to complete this.
Edit 2: I beat Farewell and then did it again. I have completed all the C-sides and Assist Mode remains off. I am now going for Goldens which might make me break, but I'm working on 3a and 6a. Chapter 3 is going to end me.

Someone could have nerve damage in their fingers and thus have slower reaction time: What then? Their body won't magically fix itself. That's why assist mode is called literally that: "Assist" mode. It's there to help you completely the game, not for you to cheat. The game trusts the player to want to experience the game to the fullest for them to choose to turn on assist mode and its many uses.

I personally use controller (because keyboard just doesn't suit me for this game, I've tried), and I understand what people say in the video about inputs not always being consistent, but the reason for that is that Celeste only has 8 directions of motion (excluding variants and the feathers), and so a control stick with a full 360 degree range of motion can result in the player thinking their fingers are in one place when they're actually in another, causing a dash to go in the wrong direction. Just using keyboard or dpad fixes this though. Here's my thing about some of these reviews regarding controller options though. You can connect both a controller and a keyboard to Steam, so what is the problem? You don't complain about the controls of Smash because the DK Bongo Drums are limited, you choose a controller that isn't the DK Bongos, you know?
Also most people use keyboard, how does it not suit the game? lol

@@sammshoyu8434 Yes and that’s the beauty of Celeste. I think so many people get difficulty and frustration mixed up. Something can be difficult without being frustrating. The game restarts you at the beginning of every room you enter which makes the game super forgiving, but it’s still very much a hard game. Trial and error is there by the bucketloads but you don’t have to start the whole level over when you die. That’s what good difficulty should be. The reason it feels so easy to beat is that it isn’t frustrating so you always keep trying over and over no matter how much you fail because failure is just a slap on the wrist, (just be prepared for a very VERY sore wrist by the end) , and before you know it the game is beaten. It’s fun because the difficulty keeps you engaged but the forgiving death system keeps you from rage quitting. I’m bad at explaining but to summarize, games with difficulty are fun, games with frustration are not, the two are not the same, and Celeste is the former not the latter.

i've invested myself a fair bit into this game and i'd like to give my two cents
    - a lot of the accessibility options that you mentioned were added quite recently. 50% screen shake, grab toggles, and freeform button binding, for instance, are a courtesy of 1.4.0.0, the most recent patch that is barely a month or two old. the devs are commited to accessibility, which is great, but it's really obvious it's an area they're slowly getting experience with.
    - keyboard is NOT terrible. many many many speedrunners play on keyboard (myself included) to great effect, it has legitimate advantages over gamepads (e.g.: way more bindable keys), there are fair arguments to some strats being legitimately easier on keyboard; like it straight up is a good way to play the game. all the people complaining about their diagonal dashes becoming cardinal dashes? would straight up not happen on keyboard (or a dpad for that matter, but it's not that obvious that the dpad is a good way to play the game where in a keyboard it's the only option). even the feathers, which you'd think would give keyboard players some trouble, isn't even that bad because the lack of precise angles means it moves in a very predictable and consistent manner, and unless you wanna take some really edgy and precise lines you will lose no time or have any trouble with the feathers.
    - about assist mode: i legitimately think it's not that good. yes, ego is the only thing keeping you from turning it on, but also there's really no options that don't instantly make the game a thousand times easier - easier than you'd probably like if you're just slightly struggling to get through. it's 100% understandable that people can have trouble wiith the game and still not want straight up invincibility or infinite dashing. dash assist is maybe the only mechanic that isn't that extreme in its effect and i think assist mode REALLY needed more stuff like this; stuff that makes the game easier but by a small amount so you can ACTUALLY fine-tune the difficulty to your liking instead of Assist Mode feeling like a "give up" button

I started on keyboard, and quit a few screens into chapter 1 once I realized I would love this game, and bought a controller. Once my controller arrived, I played through the game multiple times, and completed 1b, 2b, and 8a.
Recently, in the past few weeks, I decided to try keyboard. I set up some keybinds which took advantage of the thumb keys on the Ergodox, opened up my main file, started Prologue, and played through until Summit on keyboard. I tried to get as many collectibles along the way as possible, even picking up a few in most chapters I hadn't gotten yet. I expected there to be a lot of difficulty re-learning how to hyper and wave dash, but I actually found both to transfer very smoothly to the keyboard, and be easier to execute. I had more trouble remembering which keys were jump and dash than I had actually executing an extended hyper. I had expected the feather to be an issue, to the point that my initial plan was to switch my left hand, covering ESDF for movement, to the controller stick, while continuing to use my right hand for other controls. I gave up on that on the first screen of 6a, and was surprised to find that feather movement really wasn't that bad on keyboard. Once I got used to it, I felt a lot more consistent in many of the more difficult Badeline Fight screens. I have since completed 3b for the first time ever, finally got some consistency on Search Skip and the wavedash skip in 5a to skip going left for the bubble, and finally figured out how to set up a vertical hyper (align Madeline almost directly under the edge of the wall, not next to the wall).
Part of it may be that I just am more comfortable with keyboard controls. I started Hollow Knight around the same time I started Celeste, and have used a keyboard with that from the beginning to take advantage of more comfortable bindings and the lack of analog movement in Hollow Knight, so I was getting practice with platformer movement on keyboard all the time I was using controller in Celeste.
I totally agree that more gradation in assist mode would be nice.

regarding assist mode: yeah, it would be nice to have some additional options. from a post on r/celestegame, someone called Rickfernello (who recently did a 0 death 100% run, which is really crazy) suggested additional settings for assist mode such as health bars (an extension to invincibility), slowdown toggle buttons (an extension to game speed), dash assist slowdown instead of freeze, and a guiding silhouette (functions like arrows from Super Mario Odyssey, but like the silhouette of wavedash tutorial rooms). to avoid overcomplicating things for new players, it was also suggested that assist levels should be added, with clear labels telling the player about the experience they would be getting for each level.
also keyboard feels quite nice. I’m most definitely biased because I only have a keyboard, and I already have experience playing with games on keyboard (things like Trackmania and Touhou), but it controls quite nicely. feathers are slightly awkward because I keep trying to steer by tapping repeatedly, but even that’s mostly a skill issue (along with my insistence with taking tight racing lines when I clearly shouldn’t lol)

    • @Kayta-Linda
      @Kayta-Linda 2 года назад +2

I’ve only ever held a controller once in my life, and I wasn’t even ten years old back then. So of course, I would only be able to play with a keyboard. Also, I turned the Assist Mode on right away because I knew I was kinda garbage at all games due to not having any experience. But still, I wanted to at least try.
But then.. I was *very* surprised that the process was way easier than I expected. I had, like, a 100 deaths in 1a, and 85 or so in 2a. I heard that 3a is usually considered a “difficulty spike” compared to previous levels, and... I didn’t even really feel that. I got a full clear in less than an hour.
Now, I *did* struggle with some rooms beginning with 4a. I just couldn’t press buttons correctly fast enough. I tried slowdown in assist mode, but it didn’t really help. Instead, it just made me have to adjust to a different timing. So I bailed on that idea. And then it turned out that my problem came from the fact that my laptop isn’t a gaming PC, so it doesn’t allow me to press more than three buttons at the same time. So I decided to “solve” this problem by switching grab to “inverse” for those rooms that seem to require it. Is works well enough. (Also, I recently replayed that first room and just.. did it first try, so I also might have been overcomplicating it the first time around, too.)
Anyway... the C-sides are the only thing that I *actually* never want to do ever again. 3c’s last screen traumatized me pretty seriously :D...
Also, “Reflection” is the best stage in any difficulty. I just... really love rooms where I need to free-fall. I feels really nice. It’s like I always thought when watching let’s plays: don’t be afraid of what’s below you. Just trust the developer to guide you through it. So Badeline fight is just fantastic fro me. The movement through those rooms is just so... smooth and.. I don’t know. It feels like dancing. The way you’re always thrown from her into the exact position you need to be next. So you just keep falling. I love that.

I don't think negative reviews are necessarily a bad thing. Personally, I wouldn't call Madeline "floaty." Her jump is pretty short, and has a decent bit of hang time, but she ascends and descends quite quickly. Madeline gives you enough time in the air to truly control where you want to go, but feels snappy and responsive, even when falling. Most characters I would call "floaty" tend to rise and fall slowly, making them feel like air-filled balloons. It's like you're jumping on the moon. And when they don't have great air-control, they're excruciating.
But yes, your point stands: Madeline is very responsive, and is a well-designed platforming character.

I think such negative reviews are very valid. Because even though Celeste may have 97% positive reviews, that doesn't mean if every gamer bought it 97% of them would enjoy or finish it. It sometimes feels like games are praised to oblivion. For example, on the subreddit r/shouldibuythisgame a person asked whether they should buy Hades even though they don't enjoy roguelikes at all. And people were still recommending it. But if you don't enjoy the genre you probably won't enjoy this game either. That's where I see the problem with people blindly recommending a game, and then that's where those negative reviews come from. People were promised they would enjoy a game even though they generally don't like the genre, or in case of celeste people might think "i don't like really difficult games" but still buy it just because people still recommend it. And then I think such negative reviews are valid.

It was painfully difficult, required stupid levels of precision and goddamnit thos strawberries are so annoying to get sometime, I don't care if they're optional I WANT MY DAMN STRAWBERRY! But also, at the same time, the whole plot of the game centered around a character who was _exactly_ the same kind of stubborn, out-of-their-depth idiot that I was, someone who had decided to do something hard come hell or high water just to prove to themselves that they could. My own reasons for playing the game couldn't have lined up more perfectly with Madeline's reasons for climbing the mountain, and even if most casual players won't have _that_ kind of synergistic experience I feel like a lot of the people who play Celeste that are already good at platformers kind of miss out on that beautiful experience I had, where the game is actually a struggle to them and they can thus relate to the main message of the whole thing.

I’d like to raise a point that I feel was overlooked when talking about “it should be clear the game isn’t for everyone.”
Celeste is a BIG game within the indie sphere, on par with other renowned games like Hollow Knight and Ori for example, and with all popular games, you get people claiming it’s a “must play for everyone,” (as well as players following the “next big thing,” but that’s a seperate topic).
Perhaps a friend recommends it to you without thought on if you’d enjoy it, (I wouldn’t recommend DOOM to someone who plays entirely life sim games for an exaggerated example), and I’ve found from experience in many other indie communities beyond just Celeste’s that it tends to be the FANS that don’t know that the game’s not for everyone, and will recommend the game to everyone they know and their dogs.
I’m guilty of this myself don’t get me wrong, but since I came to this realisation I’ve tried putting a bit more thought into my recommendations beyond just “I like this game go play it too,” as if I recommend a game I want the person to actually enjoy it.
Anyway, sorry for rambling, just spitting out some thoughts I had while watching this :)

It’s weird that people say that this game wasn’t meant to be played on PC, because every person who I’ve talked to that is good at Celeste prefers keyboard because it’s much easier to avoid mixing up cardinal and diagonal inputs. I play on controller and, at first, I thought the game was constantly taking in my inputs wrong. But eventually I realized that no, it wasn’t a game problem, my hands weren’t accurately translating what I wanted to do into the correct left stick input, and I had just never played a precision game before where that was a major issue.
I’ve put 220 hours into the game on my Nintendo Switch and I don’t have any input problems anymore. I do still occasionally dash in the wrong direction, but I’m able to recognize exactly what happened and correct it on my next attempt with minimal effort.

I typically still don't have fun with that section (because it's still hard af, and because I know I'm cheesing it), but it lets me move past the un-fun portion and revert the game back to how it's meant to be played for the remainder of the game.

At least to me it's infuriating how people use reviews.
What's more the way our brain works you can read ten good reviews and one negative and that negative might still outweigh all the others.
That's why it's annoying even games like BOTW or Celeste get these in reality useless reviews that taint peoples opinions and might make them not get and play these incredible experiences.
It gets worse when looking at a place like meta critic where it feels like half the reviews are 10 and the other half is 0
    I don't think i've ever played a game i would call 10. I've also never seen a 0 game.
It's like a 10 is a positive and 0 is a negative. The others are useless. You have people who see a 10 on a game they don't think deserves it so they balance it out with a zero. And then someone sees that zero and balances it out with a ten. And the cycle goes on.
Professional reviews aren't really trustworthy either since they have to be made so fast and also of course there's the fact that if they give a bad score to a big game the developer won't give them early copies.
so it's really hard to find a reliable review is what i'm trying to say with this overly long comment.

I had to manually search for the negative reviews, so nobody is likely to have their viewpoint tainted by these reviews because they probably wont see them. But you're right, the only people that care enough to leave a review are the people that either despised it or loved it, the middle ground opinions aren't heard because they didn't care enough to leave a review

@@Mate_Antal_Zoltan sure. Or maybe some people are able to appreciate the game for what it is instead of trying to force it through the hole every other zelda fits through. Yes I completely agree it's very unlike the other zeldas but that isn't a negative. Just a fact. The game and especially the world is a magnificent work of art and to dismiss everything it has to offer simply because it's not what you want a zelda game to be is doing yourself a great disservice. But I can't tell you what to like. Just like you can't tell anyone else the game is bad because from our eyes the game is MUCH MUCH more than what you give it credit for.
Frankly I'd assume you dislike it just because it's popular. It's an interesting phenomenon. I used to dislike the music Muse puts out nowadays and other people liking it just strenghtened my feelings. Old muse was and is my favorite band but now at 16 I'm finally mature enough to accept that I won't get the muse I want but that doesn't mean their new music doesn't have value too. It's not for me and botw probably isn't for you either but I hope that you actually give it a proper chance (provided that you already haven't, which is possible but just judging by your reply it sounds your hatred for the game is a tad bit irrational).

I don't think it's just ego when it comes to not turning on assist mode! I know part of why I don't tend to turn on easy modes in certain games is because it feels like I'm not really playing the game the way it was made to be played, and with a game like Celeste, perfecting the platforms is fundamentally what the game is. It's not like there's a deep story I'm aching to get through for Celeste, so winning through assist mode just, wouldn't really feel like winning. I will say with Celeste, I played a bit of it and mostly feel like it's a game I don't get very much from, personally. I can appreciate the graphics/it's history as a pico game/and the charm others have found in it, but I don't need to play it to enjoy those, and honestly find it more enjoyable just looking it up online rather than playing it first hand. Heck, then I can even watch people complete the much harder difficulties, and that's way more entertaining than dying in normal or assist mode.

Something I find fascinating is how my sibling loves Celeste and hated playing Hollow Knight, while I hated playing Celeste but love Hollow Knight. It makes sense knowing what I know now about the two games, but I was scared off of Hollow Knight for ages and ages because my sibling introduced me to both of them, only had me play Celeste... and called them both platformers. Turns out, no, they're just entirely different categories of games and I love metroidvanias but find platformers repetitive and too frustrating, while they love platformers but find metroidvanias too lacking in direction. Neither game is inherently better or worse, but each one is certainly better or worse for each of us. Celeste was one of the most painful gaming experiences I've ever had, while I still remember how frustrated and disheartened my sibling got while trying to beat Hollow Knight. Both games are great in their own right, they just... weren't right for everyone.
I also still love Celeste, simply because of how much my sibling loved it. Still need to bug them into playing Hollow Knight as payback...

3:49 Something worth remembering is that reviews don't exist to teach game designers. As with any critique, there's lessons that a developer or team can take from reviews, but that's not who they're for. Reviews are for the players; the consumers. It's natural to feel an empathetic sense of injustice when a problem is unavoidable or beyond the designers control, but that doesn't solve the problem. It's important that these issues are voiced in reviews because they might very well be deal breakers for someone looking to invest time or money into a product, regardless if the developers did the best they could or not. It might feel unfair, but it would be more unfair to assume what might be relevant to someone's purchase and take away the consumer's voice about a genuine issue they had- which is basically what happened to youtube's dislikes :T

D-input is more flexible and loose, you'll notice that it's different immediately once you connect a PS controller or something ,and start mashing to see the game not recognizing your button presses. It supports 8 axes, 128 buttons, haptic feedback, and... Full POV?

Because at first you didn't mention assist mode, which a lot of people present as the perfect solution where no one can have any issues with a difficult game, but then you did, and proceeded to blame the players not using it, I was furious, and finally I was relived when you said it wasn't a perfect solution, and presented the facts that assist mode isn't a perfect thing
I'm usually someone that does quite well at video games, my boyfriend on the other hand, struggles a lot, and quite of a few of the games he played and struggled on had assist mode, like CrossCode for example.
He stopped playing basically all of them out of frustration and difficulty, and never used assist mode, because it's insulting, it's not ill-intentioned by the devs, but it's the equivalent of the doom characters being dressed as a baby on the lower difficulty.
Honestly I've lost hope to find someone who is both good at a game, yet understand that not everyone is, and the struggles that come along with it, so, good job for not simply shitting on the "game too hard" comments and actually analyzing their issues.

The reason the Canadian flag is used to indicate English is for a few reasons- "Canadian English" IS a dialect of English listed on a lot of apps and devices, and as far as I understand, it just changes the spelling of a handful of words and is neither completely based on British English, OR American English. The second reason is because the developer is Canadian lol. It wouldn't make sense to advertise the English used as being British or American unless the creator could guarantee it followed all required spelling and grammatical rules of each.
Also as a side note, fun fact: Maddy Thorson (the creator of Celeste) went to the college in my home town, which I am also attending for the same program with some of the same teachers! I'm even making my own games for a small business.

Celeste is probably one of the hardest games I have ever played. I remember finding the experience to be exhausting and extremely frustrating, and I was one of those people that was too proud to use assist mode; like I wanted to prove to myself that I was capable. However, I think the game's difficulty was actually a beautifully executed metaphor for the lore and Madeline's mental journey. Overcoming your doubts and accepting yourself including all of your flaws is one of the hardest things to do, especially when you struggle with something like mental illness like the main character did. Celeste being a harder platformer helps the player empathize with the stress that Madeline felt fighting with her mental illness. The relief that you feel at the end of the game reaching the peak of the mountain can be related to the relief that Madeline felt when she accepted "Badeline" as a part of herself. All of the technical gameplay mechanics are cleverly tied to the game's story and not many games do that.

Even if a game is very difficult such as (personal choices) Celeste, Furi, Hollow knight, Ghostrunner, if they are not punishing then it doesn't hurt when you lose or die. As opposed to again rougelikes where every single death is extremely punishing and can physically hurt someone new to the genre.

And about celeste, keep going, even if you get stuck just rest and try later (I actually rested for like a month one time and then I completed chapter 7C last screen in like just 15 tries)
If a middle schooler like me can do it on his free time so can you
Also I’m interested if you have played Cuphead (I already completed it in normal mode BTW)

@@tomas_iss7469 I've only played cuphead a bit on my brothers computer and with a friend on that shared game thing on steam, don't own it myself, but maybe one of the games I'll play when I feel done with Celeste.

@@tomas_iss7469 Also played a bit more of 7c yesterday and ended up getting to the second cloud. Not that far, but at least some progress.

@@tomas_iss7469 I did it, I fucking did it, I died three time at the last crystal and I think three times right before. I basically had all of the beginning memorized completely, at the end I had everything up until the wall bounce like 9/10 times. But for some reason my brain just decided to forget how to do the third pink cloud. After like almost 2 hours of not getting it consistently, when before that I basically never failed it, I just realised I kept doing it too early or with just enough time on the cloud so I barely got past it. So I started just taking it more chill there and beat it shortly after.

To be fair not everyone reads every single tag on a game, most people just go "oh this game i heard a lot of good stuff is on sale. huh a platformer? I like mario so i guess i could give it a shot..."
