I live in Whitstable, with the amount of raw sewage that's pumped into the sea from the Swalecliff water treatment centre 3 miles away. I would never eat an oyster. You take a risk swimming around that coast.

Yes, the unwitting tourists! Still need to make a complaint to the shop & the council. If they are selling food unfit for human consumption.

I live in Whitstable too! Interesting to see a newcomers view. I remember when oysters were 50p. Like you, I will never eat the oysters or go in the sea now - shameful the amount of sewage they pump into our sea. 🤢

Someone should warn the tourists, but nobody will because those local businesses needs them to survive. It's a no win situation.

Whitstable was ok for oysters back in the Victorian era but sewage outfall pipes from a population explosion killed it off but about 40 years back they extended the outfall pipes and that resurrected the oysters beds, since then there has been another population explosion, well you can see where I'm going with this.

Not sure if I have commented but if not, I hope you got over the sickness. I once ate mussels in the South of France before travelling on a coach back to UK, and had food poisoning all the way through France. The coach driver kept stopping to let me be ill on the side of the motorway, and sit on the roadside kerb area. My daughter was about 6 at the time and my fellow passengers looked after her. That must be one step worse than being ill in your van! Imagine a coach full of passengers watching the display!

Hi I live in Whitstable it was interesting to see our town through a visitors eyes.
On the Oyster front - it is Whitstables main trade - the oyters when brought in - DONT just go to restaurents and outlets - they have to be purified for at least 42hrs and be
Tested before they can be consumed.
You have been unlucky, did you swim in the sea? People have unfortunately been ill from that.
The industrial side of the Harbour is a local aggregate company Brett , they've been around for over 100 yrs. Whitstable was the first harbour to have a railway line running to it - The 'Crab and Winkle' as its known locally. If you come back ( dont be put off)- take a trip on the Whitstable Vintage lifeboat The Chieftain 😊.

    • @kittyroo-x4p
      @kittyroo-x4p 4 месяца назад

Where do you buy the safe ones if you shouldn't go to restaurants and outlets? and how can you recognise those who have been purified, do thay have a certificate?

Oysters are well known to cause intestinal problems! It depends on the area; Mediterranean oysters are particularly bad!
The number of viruses and bacteria associated with them is legion! And guess what? The UK water companies are now discharging sewage into the sea at present!
Hope you both recover soon 🙏 !

I met Peter Cushing years ago ,sitting in the little cafe he used to frequent . I was star struck. I am 58 and used to love the Hammer House films, as a kid. My ex boyfriend lived in Whitstable as a young boy and Peter had a beachfront house , boy friend and friends used to play on the beach near Peters house and he used to give them lemonade..Claim to fame!

I use to be sent to Whitstable to Sort electrical problems out with many customers. One customer was the oyster house , an interesting building with it's History. Not my favourite place as Whitstable I found a messy town, but had it's charm. Could never understand why it was so popular. I am retired and living in Wales. Thanks for the video. I am from Margate originally where i trained as an electrician. I lived in Sittingbourne eventually after Bedfordshire. Then south Wales. My last electrical job in Kent was Wetherspoons Herne Bay. Hope to be revisiting later this year.

I was in Whitstable this morning, its a nice bike ride from Canterbury.
Ive not had oysters for about 40 years, not a fan.
I got ill from the Costa Coffee in the high street (bad milk) needed antibiotics it felt like I had little creepers in my tummy lol
That fish and chip shop you pointed out has been closed for a while now. Pretty sad as that was my favourite fish & chips shop in the world.
The only good thing about Margate is that is where my youngest was born otherwise i avoid it 😊
I'm sure you're feeling better now. We all got ecoli in Sharm el Sheik, eldest son has kidney damage and renal hypertension from it. In and out of hospital for years. Still on going with appointments & meds.
We stayed and ate in the highest rated hotel there at the time as well. Hilton Fayrouz it was called.

I have a lot of sympathy for you guys with the oyster thing, many years ago I had some oysters from Morrison's and within 24hrs was so incredibly ill and scared the life out of my daughter as I had no idea where I was or what was happening, I was out of my head. It has taken me the best part of 20yrs to try them again and I have from The Clementina in Sant Luis Minorca in May 2024, and they were delicious. I had expressed what had happened to me to the owner Mike and he assured me that these oysters were not only super fresh but had been purged - I had no ill effects at all and intend having some more when I return in Sept.

When I lived in Falmouth of course you have to have the local oysters with a beer in Oyster Week. I was very surprised when they cooked them for a few seconds, until they told me that the law had changed maybe 10 years ago. Seeing you traveled through Spain without any Montezuma’s revenge a couple of weeks ago, well I seem to have the V virus which is now circulating a bit in Barcelona. My associated smell is Detol, mum always put it in the bucket, so visiting some hospitals brings back dodgy memories.

I looked at your Facebook page to see where you might be going this week after realizing you were fairly close to Essex, so I have seen spoliers about what happened next after Whitstable ! But I am glad you got a good walk round the place, it really is quite different from a lot of coastal towns in the South-East. I have a friend who is a train driver who lives very close to the football ground a bit further inland in the town and we've met up a couple of times for matches there - the team are nicknamed ... of course ... The Oystermen !! I've not tried the old school fish n chips shop you saw, there has always been a big queue outside on my visits (V C Jones but it looks like they've closed down now after 62 years ) however there are two branches of "Ossies" either side of the town centre, one on the Tankerton Road near Marine Parade where you can sit on a bench up on the grassy cliff nearby and look out over the sea, they were very nice and recommended to me. Sounds like you should have stuck to good old FnC ! BTW James, how many times have you said in a video now "I'm going to leave that bit out Helen" and then of course once you get to editing, it stays in after all, this time some priceless Helly-babble about "D n V" and "adult diapers" PMSL - pardon the pun !!! You've got one in a million there mate ...

Arcachon oysters of SW France are great and not ridiculously priced like ones harvested at Whitstable from the Thames, Medway, Lea, and the rest, which are sewage outflows. If they are not thoroughly purged, yer buggered. I haven't had Whitstable oysters for 30+years, and I'm not having anymore. I used to love Whitstable: not anymore.

I’m a sth Londoner, that fish & chip shop at 18.mins was our favourite place on earth as kids in the early 70s,they had a lemon tree in the little courtyard at the back that was like a spaceship to us back then 🙂

My other half had some mussels in Le Touquet a few years ago and was ill afterwards. He hasn’t eaten oysters or mussels since. Thankfully, I don’t like them and I certainly wouldn’t eat those cultivated around the south east coastline - too much sewage floating around.

I love oysters by the dozen if in Whitstable go to either Whellers, Samphire or the oyster Whitstable factory

It's not necessarily food poisoning, had a number of violent D+V events over the years. But never had any since I stopped touching door handles, especially toilet door handles! Probably a bug, simple as that. It's rare if you did both had food poisoning that a number of other people would have as well, any reports on that happening? A umber of years ago my mother had D+V after a fish meal in Weymouth, two days later it was my dad, then me and I didn't even go to Weymouth.
