I completely agree with your statement about the Nurburgring. Numbers aren't the full story by any means, but rather the driving experience has far more importance. I wish people in the comments would understand this more. Great video Carlos!
Great to hear your impressions, Carlos ! I got to drive the GT3 in September and my video got really popular. I hope to see a Motortrend review and meet you again, like we did at the Turbo launch event here in germany ;)
From an outsider's perspective the GT3 seems almost perfect, like it's the greatest 911 EVER. I want to agree. I love it. Sat in one and the feeling I had was idk it feels like you're so in control, like the car wraps around you. It feels so focused. I wish I could've driven it though. Great video again Carlos 👍
Pretty awesome you work for a huge mag and still make long, well-produced videos for your fans on your own time! Really shows you passion for cars as well as your professionalism. Well done!
I'll be picking up a fully-loaded 2015 GT3 in late January, as soon as it ships in from Germany. I was gonna offer to let MotorTrend use it if they wanted, but it looks like you guys beat me to it! If you guys ever need a GT3 to use in a Head-2-Head or anything of the sort, send me a message.
Hey Carlos, best 991 GT3 video I've seen! One of the reasons the car can also rev so high is the titanium connecting rods. The piston speed thingy can be confusing, effectively the piston speeds at high engine speeds are acceptable when the stroke is shorter. Direct injection cools things down a bit, that's one of the reasons they can run high compression. I have been asked by friends which car I would have if money was no object and my answer is always the same...
I could talk about my favorite 911 for days. It is the best 911 in the range. Until I can afford it my 8,500rpm RS5 will do for now! Great channel, just subscribed.
Really appreciated the tech summary and particularly the enthusiasm with which you presented it. I received my 2014 GT3 this past August and have had a smile on my face since. I track the car at Sebring every month and have found that the MPSC2 tires really don't like much over 31 lbs hot and running them even a few pounds over caused a lot of the oversteer I was experiencing. If you guys are ever in Florida and want to run the historic 12 Hour course in my car, just let me know. It's a fast track with lots of momentum...perfect for this car.
From soft to hard quickly based on your driving style!!!! Loooool. Your'e awesome Carlos. I'll be picking up my pre-owned 2015 in about 8 weeks. You are welcome to give it another go.
I am entertained by GT3 and your "geek out" pov, Not much I do not like about it. I drove my neighbors(2007gt3) around the block: hauling @ss at an astounding 15mph-20mph. Keep it up!
Since it was a little confusingly conveyed in the video, I want to clarify that a vehicle's track is the distance between the center points of the tires. This is significant because there is a difference between having wide tires and having tires placed far apart. A wide rear track indicates the rear tires are far apart, rather than individually wide. Of course, in the case of the GT3, both are true. Though they do not share the same rear track, I believe both the GT3 and Turbo have wider rear than front tracks. This is a relatively unusual property in cars.
I'd totally understand if non-car people would find this utterly boring, but I love these 'inside' videos! I'm quite a fan of the GT3 myself, even though I'd prefer a 997 mk2 GT3.
Excellent video Carlos , i really enjoy your reviews at motortrend very detailed and good. As you are a big fan GT3's there is really no good review or detailed about the 997 GT3 / GT3 RS online as you probably have seen the spyphotos of 991 GT3 RS and i will be launched this year i suspect why not grant us car enthusiasts a great review of the 997 GT3 / GT3 RS that would be awesome.
You've done the Z06 and the GT3, so I think you should do an episode on the GTR. The Nismo version would be cool. Just note i'm not a GTR fanboy but I would love to see how it truly stacks up against its newer competitors.
Thanks for sharing! I think the main concern with electronic steering is that you lose some feedback and advanced warning at the limits, especially if you have wet roads. I love the steering on my 981. Very precise, less chatty than the 987 but better in that it keeps the info important.
Hey Carlos I'm in the la area and just got a 991 gt3. Your welcomed to drive it anytime you want. I know you were a bit depressed after your motor trend review.
Carlos! Love your videos!! Love the new GT3! And I just sold my S2000 and looking to get a 997 GT3 but their prices are NUTS! Anything else you would recommend i look at? I already have a daily beater in a form of a BMW 535i turbo with a chip and intake.
+Carlos Lago It's been a year later, still no weekend car. I had no idea what to buy. I still have the 535i, but I have bought another 2 cars and a motorcycle. Another BMW 5 series (525i) as a daily beater and a Ford Expedition SUV to tow the motorcycle (gsxr 750) to the track. But i have figured out what I want, A C6 Corvette Z06. Ah yesss.
That extra 750rpm is to get you back into the meat of the power band on the upshift. Cars that make peak power at fuel cut are more entertaining but would be faster if they reved past peak power.
One thing I have never heard anyone talk about using that I heard was suppose to be a feature on this car before it launched, is the ability to disengage the transmission buy pulling both shift paddles in simultaneously (replicating what pressing the clutch pedal in on a true manual trans) Not sure what else besides ripping sick burnouts and being able to rev the engine up but needless to say both awesome things to do in a car like this. Does this feature really exist?
hate to geek-out too hard, but short stroke means lower piston speed, which basically means higher rpm capability, but lower torque and lower efficiency because of that, but i'm sure some pushrod hemi freak can geek-out way harder than that though
Bryan Kendall I know what he meant, which is why I pointed-out that actual physics involved wasn't as stated, and not a matter of potential speeds either, it's about lower piston speeds and the ability to turn the crank faster with less torque applied to it.
MrNicholg Actually, piston speed is determined more by the actual rod to stroke ratio. A lower rod stroke ratio creates higher piston speeds. When you increase the stroke, but leave the rod length the same, (or decreased) this reduces the rod stroke ratio and creates higher piston speeds. Longer rods reduce piston speeds because as the crank rotates they kick out at an angle as the piston travels downward. This angle and the block casting dimensions limit the length of rod you can use. So engineers have to balance these factors with packaging constraints when developing an engine.
Also did you test the variable steering to see if you can feel the cross over? I used to live on a cul de sac and with my sport bike I could leave my drive way start the turn and speed up while keeping the bars at the same point so the point of the counter steer point the bars were already there. I didn't know if you could feel or use the cross over on exit ramps or anything.
Stig Msr That's a good idea. You'd have to find a good constant radius turn that you could accelerate at a good rate through. Wonder what you'd see. I found a great video demonstrating how it works here: ruclips.net/video/GvQh2ue--0g/видео.html
Carlos, After driving the best of PDK in the GT3 and the new Z06 did GM work the magic with the transmission they say they did? GM praised the speed of the up shift were faster than PDK but on track smoothness is just as important(up and down shift) to not upset the balance. What's your opinion?
Carlos Lago Could the 'numbers' be a marketing play? I bet the GM automatic would be faster for up-shifts, as the PDK tend to keep the lower gear ready for quick downshift, which mean that up shifts would be slower (with the potential exception of 1-2 as it's only option ... should try that out).
goguhu Wrong. The PDK will have the next gear pre-selected if you are accelerating. It will also pre-select the lower gear if decelerating. It all depends on what you're doing with the throttle and brake.
Porsche Curves Perhaps it's different on the different cars. On mine it's clear that it's always VERY fast downshifting, but up shifting seems to have some lag. In the Panamera I can't really tell, but on the TS downshifts are instant. The 997 is for sure much slower either direction. I know that PDK/DCT in theory can always prepare the next logical gear, but it seems to be preferring to keep the lower one ready instead of the next one. I'll play with it a bit more (in 1'st 2'nd is only option, and in 7'th 6'th should be ready). But traveling at 50% (i.e. 3500 rpm), down shifts are instant, while up shifts take 250-750ms or something like that (very significant).
I would be curious to see motortrend test a Turbo S on the Sport Cup 2s from the GT3. That would be a serious beast, not to mention the aftermarket has been able to get about an additional 100 lb-ft and 80 or so HP out of them.
***** The Turbo S Motor Trend had for Best Driver's Car had the GT3-spec Dunlops on it. Its performance would be a pretty good approximation of what that car can do with the Cups.
Carlos is there any information leaking out about the top secret 2016 rear wheel drive Dodge coming out on the Alfa Romeo platform? I have read Dodge is targeting Porsche directly with this new model. It's so hard to find out any info or get spy photos on this new model.
Carlos Lago Sergio Marchionne and Ralf Giles have both already said that a mid sized rear wheel drive platform car has been in development since late 2012. Chrysler recently (within past 2 years) secured the copyright for the "Cuda" nameplate, although there are some rumors the car will be marketed as a new Avenger. The car is supposed to share the "D-RWD" platform with a new Alfa Romeo model. I can understand FCA wanting to keep it secret until the last possible moment to gain performance dominance, just like they did when they blind sided GM and Ford with the Hellcats. It's no coincidence Dodge upstaged Mustang on its press release date with the Challenger Hellcat. 2016 is going to be an awesome year for performance cars for sure. ;o)
CARLOS, the paddle pull for neutral is to do BURNOUTS>>>>>PERIOD....for sheer drift, tire smoking, BURNOUTS...pure hooliganism...PERIOD!!!!!! and if it did not have that option to do that, I WOULD NEVER purchase one without a manual which is not offered...but the PDK is awesome!!!!
I really enjoyed watching the nissan getting tuned will u make another series?Watching all these expensives cars gets kinda boring.Just 2 expensive for what they give u.Rather buy a bmw 4 series and project car for the money.
Hmm u released figure 8 and performance stats before MT published it? Porsche actually told you the turbo s is faster than gt3 around the track? Earlier the other journalists said turbo s is slower than gt3 on track. So it's because the tires?
Supercharged 8 and 6 cylinders or the latest modern twin turbo six and eight cylinder engines are the way to go moving forward. Hello,
Would you choose the bucket seats or the standard?
Nice video, keep the good work up!!
vsundis95 For this car? Buckets.
I believe the rear end of the GT3 is the 911 4 rear end, not the turbo?
I personally like the GT3's looks better then the Turbo S but it would be hard to choose witch one.
Carlos! Love your videos!! Love the new GT3! And I just sold my S2000 and looking to get a 997 GT3 but their prices are NUTS! Anything else you would recommend i look at? I already have a daily beater in a form of a BMW 535i turbo with a chip and intake.

ASDF The 911 50th Anniversary Edition
Carlos Lago Reasons why not the gt3 but the anniversary edition? Is it to do with the comfort mainly?
50th? It's nice but no GT3! But everyone has there favorites.

Love these vids !
hate to geek-out too hard, but short stroke means lower piston speed, which basically means higher rpm capability, but lower torque and lower efficiency because of that, but i'm sure some pushrod hemi freak can geek-out way harder than that though
That's essentially what he said. Shorter stroke = higher RPM capability. He never said a shorter stroke means higher piston speed like you implied.
the first part he was jumbling it, saying exactly what i said he said, jerky
MrNicholg I believe he meant shorter stroke yields a very high piston speed capability which in turn means higher RPM due to the short stroke.
Bryan Kendall I know what he meant, which is why I pointed-out that actual physics involved wasn't as stated, and not a matter of potential speeds either, it's about lower piston speeds and the ability to turn the crank faster with less torque applied to it.

It looks like someone leaks out so many magics of the GT3. Porsche hates you Carlos, LOL
Carlos, ever think of doing a podcast? I think this kind of segment makes for a fantastic podcast. Just a suggestion.

Porsche actually told you the turbo s is faster than gt3 around the track? Earlier the other journalists said turbo s is slower than gt3 on track. So it's because the tires?
Ming Li I was told that when equipped with the GT3's tires, the Turbo S was faster around the Nurburgring.
Carlos, I'm willing to make my GT3 arriving in a few weeks available for Randy to do a benchmark lap at Laguna Seca next year! Let me know! :-)

to be honest you are really handsome
