  • New conflicts on the EU's doorstep - and around the world - have led to increasing numbers of people seeking refuge in the bloc. Last year, the EU received more asylsum applications than at any time in the last seven years. That's acccording to a new report by the European Union Agency for Asylum.
The figures are the highest since Europe's 2015-2016 migrant crisis, when more than a million people fled across the EU's borders. Applications decreased in the years that followed, but then rose again. Syrian and Afghan nationals submitted the most applications in 2023, followed by Palestinians and then Turkish nationals. The latest figures don't include the more than 4-Mmillion Ukrainians given refuge since Russia's invasion.
Germany recorded more than 330,000 asylum applications in 2023 - more than any other EU member state. It's followed by France, Spain and then Italy.

It is not only Haitians and Central Americans, but also Cubans and Venezuelans who have a political, social and economic crisis that is occurring there in those countries. But do not emigrate to Chile or the United States, Brazil, Canada and Mexico, those countries have many problems migrating to countries like Spain and Portugal that will change their demographics in those countries trying to reach those European countries and the asylum claims will go up high in the future from these countries.

It's because American, Russian & European weapons exports to the middle east & north Africa has soared over the last 20 years! Russia stopped the export of wheat after huge summer fires in 2010/2011 & within weeks of the decision, even though Russia was sitting on 2 years of reserve stores of wheat, the market proves dramatic rose & within a year, people were on the streets enmass in Cario, Damascus and even Qatar, a massive gas exporter with a US naval base!
"Our government is weak!", that's lame to say the least! What about 16 years of useless role by CDU & CSU led coalition governments in Germany?!? Who were more concerned about crippling Greece & trying to force Ireland to raise its corporate tax rate!

*One big problem that nobody wants to talk about:*
Aid to Africa that was given freely without any expectation by the UN or the West that the local governments
would institute change in their societies!
*People in Westernized countries stopped having big families because the cost of living is so high* (any incentives
given by the states did not cover the full cost of a stay-at-home Mom and a big family.)
*FACT: Children on a low-tech, rural area farm are free labor. Children living in cities are expenses, big expenses!*
It sounds cruel, but this is a realistic question: How many children per woman in Africa or per woman in the Middle
East should the taxpayers in Europe pay to maintain? Shouldn't the expectation be that the aid is given with some
sort of societal change (basically, "carrots and sticks")
The Left has made a big deal out of the condemnation of colonialism. But what else can you call what Stalin
did to eastern and central Europe?
There is really no reason why the people of 2024 Europe should feel guilt about what their ancestors did!
Despite the climate and the wars; Europe created societies that thrived and offered increasing opportunity
and wealth to the members of said societies.

    • @tomorrowneverdies567

The reason why "westernized" countries stoped having big families is not because the cost of living is high (real income has increased the past 20 years - faster than the cost of living). From what I can understand, the main reason is that people like spending time watching RUclips videos, watching films, series, video games, and spending their money on expensive travelling, instead of raising enough children.
The Amish in the US for example, have the constraint (put by themselves on theirselves) to not use this technology inside their households. And their fertility rates are more than 2.1.

Insufficient deterrence is always the answer to such a question. Although vague, the right level and forms of deterrence are whatever gets the results you want. So, such discussions should always focus on means of deterrence. Root causes are almost always out of your control, and the obligations to one's own citizens persist no matter what. One of the root causes is simply that Europe is very nice. Don't change that.

    • @dano9008
      @dano9008 6 месяцев назад +2

No, it isn't based on the premise that migration is objectively bad, but on the premise that it can be. And so, we (a society) incur an obligation to choose ends and subsidiary ends to ensure it isn't. So, to the question "to what end"? prudence is the answer and the details and subsidiary ends need to be sorted out by a society. The choices made will vary and the relative success will vary as with anything. Sorry if that seems like dodging the question, but I'm just an American who likes DW. It isn't my prerogative, but it is the kind of issue that every nation needs to manage in the service of prudence as that nation defines it. Canada has a long history of choosing exactly the immigrants they want. In the US, we have long strived for immigrants who would assimilate well and we had and used elaborate social research on different subgroups in different nations to identify such groups. Sadly that has fallen away of late and we have a crises. Immigration can be managed well, but you can't be passive at all. You have to discern the ends you want and deter everything else.@ullCrenbarry
