Hola!! I saw this video and then went to the original. What fun! I’ve been making soap for decades but i’m kind of lazy. As in, i have one recipe that i follow most of the time. I saw spots when i tried to use the soap calculator. So, i had to try your recipe since i would never come up with one on my own. The first time, it traced really fast! The second time, it took longer. I poured it into my mold while it was still loose. Both are curing but i have hope that they will be awesome!! I even made a third batch with my old recipe. That’s where i used your idea of orange rind. I also used oils that i had steeped with botanicals to get some health benefits! If i had more molds, i would have made a couple more batches! @@EllysEverydaySoapMaking isn't it just 👍. My test group - now about 40 people - are abandoning their commercial stuff in favour of good old fashioned soap!
Great video and amazing lather! I used your recipe for pure olive oil soap at the end of last year and it has been stored away until now. But I should really go ahead and test it :)
Lovely review of that soap. I will have to give that recipe a go. Hi Elly, with whatever soap that I have made so far from my own soap recipes that have had a 6 week cure I have trouble getting a soap bar to last longer than 1 week's use of bathing in the shower (they will last longer if rubbed on a shower puff to wash with). Is it the recipe of oils that are used or would a longer soap cure time help to keep the soap from being washed away to quickly? Before used the soap bars are nice & firm, beautiful to use. I would love to find a soap recipe where the soap bar lasts much longer.
Thanks Fiona, glad you enjoyed it. That's a great question. Handmade soap is generally more quick to use than factory made soap, but the oil choice is fundamental to how long your soaps last. Some create more soluble soaps than others. Coconut oil is very highly soluble! This chart might help you decide on a different oil choice www.lovinsoap.com/oils-chart/
Good job Elly, plz is there any change in orange soap features after time? especially rancidity or oxydation of zest ? any chage of zest color ? i read that it may take black color after time! plz clarify this point for me! thank u in advance
Hi Elly, can i just use 100% lye crystals for cleaning to make soap? I can get it at the hardware store. You have inspired me. I want to use the herbs in the garden to add to the soap as abrasive exfoliant and to add aroma? Any tricks for collecting essential oil.
Hi Shawn, as long as the lye says '98% or 99% sodium hydroxide' and doesn't have any other ingredients, you can use it. Herbs are nice in soap, but very difficult to make essential oils from them! Unless you have a farm's worth ;)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking hi Elly. I made two of your recipes. One was 600 g of olive oil and lye. It still has a wet surface after 12 hours in an oven with the light on. But it is thicker than it was last night. The other had 950 olive oil and 50 coconut. It is very solid. Both reached tracing, but i went further with the second and it was thicker on initial pour. What did i do wrong on the first? Will it eventually get hard? Does it need more time? Can it be re-worked somehow? I had fun. Learned some things. You need to get a feel for it. Thank you for your videos!
Do you have any tips for soaping in tropical weather? I live in Hawaii and it’s hot in the summer 80+ and nice right now 75-80 day 65-70’s at night. Lots of trade winds so we don’t have AC. I want to try cold process but worry about gelling or “Cpoping”? the soap when it’s already hot.
Hi, yes I make soap in summer here all the time, I still find they need wrapping to force gel, but you don't need warm blankets like winter time. Towels will do. CPOP/Gel requires much higher heat than your summer room temperature.
Hi Elly, I was wondering if replacing olive oil with other alternatives like sunflower oil or canola would be good for this recipe. Or are there other options you would recommend!?
Canola and rice bran would be good, sunflower oil doesn't make great soap. Any soap recipe that has oils changed would need to be recalculated though :)
Hi, I followed this recipe of yours and got a nice batch of soap. They were getting harden pretty well but now there has been a storm going on where I live, and it's been raining for 2 weeks already and my soaps getting melty. What can I do? P.S. the humidity is always >90% when it's raining
Oh, that's frustrating. Olive oil based soaps do get soft in warm, humid weather. The best thing is to keep them as dry as possible between uses - put them on a wire rack etc.
I really love your soap making. I still have to make this zest soap. I made the shampoo soap with the teatree and rosemary....it smells delicious. My hair is happy. I only wonder how to make a natural conditioner? Love the video ....thankyou Elly💜💜
Nice video. Will hardness of water we use have any effect on behaviour of soap? Quality of underground water differs based on location. May sound silly, but it came to my mind after looking at this video.
It depends on your climate, and the type of soap you have made. Many handmade soaps get a bit soft and sticky, particularly in hot and humid climates. Do you think that could be it given you are in Pakistan? I'm not sure what your weather would be like there now...
Hi Elly, thanks for your videos, they are awesome. I have been doing your recipes for a while now and I love them. I have a question: most of the soaps leave a slime depot like a gelatine on the soap holder. Is that normal? Thanks and stay safe in Australia 😉
Hi, yes that's common in olive oil based soaps, which most of mine are! One of the unfortunate trade-offs of having a gentle soap. Keeping them dry as possible in between uses helps, also you can look at a soap chart like this to consider other oils to use to harden your soaps :) www.lovinsoap.com/oils-chart/
i added fresh orange jest instead of dried i’m a little nervous because i didn’t add dried do you think it will no spoil because of the fresh zest i added about 5 tablespoons thanks 🙏
Brilliant video as always. I love using soap to clean pots (and walls) but my kitchen sink leaves much to be desired since plastic foam scourers have been banished. Your scourer looks a really good alternative. Is it a recycled product, or made by your good self perhaps?
I've just found your channel - oh my goodness graciousness where have you been all my soaping life - a fantastic Australian soaper, you are wonderful at explaining- thank you for sharing Elly can you please show how you use a bar soap to wash pots and pans, and do you have a particular recipe for this?
Thanks again Jules! I'm loving your kind words this morning :) That's a great video idea - thank you! Basically I just get a scourer or dish cloth of some kind, rub some soap on it, and wash away! You can also swish some soap around in your wash up water to make it soapy. We washed our dishes with soap like this for years before we got our dishwasher.
All new at this, so I hope you see this comment. Thanks so very much for your soap videos, I have learned so much from them. I have started my second soap folder, with my dos and don't and named it "Elly's soaps" all your good advice. May I ask a question about using coco powder as coloring........does it accelerate? That seems to be the case for me. You're the best, and thanks again. Ted in Eagle Idaho
Hi Ted, thanks for your comment. That's so wonderful to hear that you're enjoying my videos and finding them so helpful. I have a confession to make, I've never used cocoa powder in a soap! Not yet anyway. I haven't heard of it accelerating trace, but perhaps it does? Would have to do a bit more research on that one. Thanks for commenting, that's very interesting!
Thank you, no, not yet, but I would like to do more research on that subject. It's not commonly used by soap makers because it make quite a soft soap that can spoil easily, but for many people it's an affordable option.
Hi elly, I hv been watching ur soap recipes and observed that u mostly do it with a larger portiin of olive oil. Olive oil is an expensive oil in india and not that readily available. So Could u please suggest another oil with same properties as olive oil.
There aren't really any oils with the same properties as olive, but this soap making oils chart might be helpful for you :) www.lovinsoap.com/oils-chart/ Or you might like this 100% coconut oil soap recipe for bathing, it's quite nice ruclips.net/video/yZbAfgwEkJs/видео.html
Love your videos. So informative. I have formulated my own base soap recipe using soapcalc that I think is great. Could I keep using this recipe for different variations or does a recipe need to change according to additives?
Hi Elly. This was a very sweet video. Thank you. Just wondering what properties a mere 5% castor oil imparts to the soap. I’ve noticed you add 5% castor to many of your soaps. Why do you like to add it? Thanks again. 💞
Hi!! I really, just the other day, was just thinking why their wasn't more grow pro soap making users? Like the orang zest. Is ginger to harsh to put in soap
In the last week, I've learned and retained more from you. I am thankful. Lye calculation; soap capacity; ratios etc. If I may suggest, I'd be interested in viewing a "Ally's opinion on additives" i.e. lavender, powdered zest, clays, milks etc
Would love for you to make a three milk soap... cold processed and hot if possible.... i reallly would love to make a coconut milk, goat milk and cows milk soap but cannot find anything nice.... and truthfully you’re the only one i trust to give me the right way to do it. Xo
I’ve made goats milk soap many, many years ago. I froze the amount of milk i needed. When i was ready to start the process, i took the milk from the freezer and let it get slushy and used that. The amount of milk(s) you use is the same as your water ratio. Pour the lye slower so the milk(s) don’t curdle. Everything else is the same. Maybe that’s something you could investigate.
Thanks for your suggestion Shari, but I don't use any animal milks in my soap. If you look up how to make goats milk soap then you can just use that method but mix your different milks in instead of using all goats milk. Debbie's comment explains the process you want perfectly!
Hi Elly, love your videos. I made so much soap this year I've started my own business in Florida USA. It's splash coast soap. Dot com I'd be curious of what you think of my soaps. You taught me alot. Blessings for down under.
Hi, that's so nice to hear. Good for you! I checked out your website, your soaps look wonderful! Congratulations, I wish you every success with your venture :)
Love this video Elly. Got a little 'woozy' from the camera action lol but watched it to the end. I always reach for my (your) Olive oil soap when I'm feeling a bit dry myself. When I made mine and after cure I gave some to my designated testers and the feedback was great. I can't wait for more video's from you 💕 enjoy your Sunday
Thanks Michelle, yes I might stick with a static camera next time. I get a bit woozy watching these too! Thank you. The olive oil soaps are my favourites too.
Ahh I know!! Sorry, I forgot that. It smells like dried orange rind :) Not very orangey, just rindey. I quite like it, but if you want a nice orange scent I'd recommend adding some EO.
Elly's Everyday I understand. I’m fear of lye to make. I will order goat milk soap base so I can just melted it then added essential oil which is easier for me.
Have you seen my videos for beginners? Once you know what you're doing, there's no need to fear the lye. If you take the safety precauttions, you'll be fine. Oh goodness, thank you for letting me know. I did wonder about that. I filmed some other videos like this but couldn't stand to watch them myself. I may end up going for the static camera for future review videos. Thanks again, I really appreciate that!
The recipe link is in the video, and in the video description box below the video. And here it is again! ruclips.net/video/1MpRL1C2Evk/видео.html Thanks for asking :)
It would be so much easier if the recipe was in cups and tablespoons. Haven’t been able to find one video that had a breakdown for beginners.. So complicated with the percentage of oil..
It's not really possible to use volume measures for soap making as they aren't standard around the world and it's dangerous if the correct amounts aren't used. It's unfortunate I know!
Oh the orange soap is lovely looking! My husband makes orange marmalade and this would be a great use of a lot of the peel. Thanks for the tip about the San Francisco sourdough starter. I ended up not putting it in my order at cultures for health. I was able to buy some cheese making products instead. Then guess what today this sourdough recipe came up on my Google page anitalianinmykitchen.com/lievito-madre-recipe/ It looks wonderful and it’s made with honey! I made these comments before I finished the video. Do you know what I’ve been having a problem with is creepy skin along with rougher looking hands. Do you know what the heck works great with both? Jergen natural glow self tanning daily moisturizer. For some reason just that Jergens lotion none of the rest.
Hi, glad you found another use for your money with Cultures for Health! The lievito madre sounds great too! Not sure about your skin, maybe contact your doctor and get it checked out medically if you're not sure? Simple soap and a good plain moisturiser is my best advice :)

This is awesome! I am a big fan of your soap videos so please make more. Waiting for coconut oil soap video with 20% super fat. Please upload that soon.
Thank you Disha, I will be editing that video tomorrow! Many more to come :)
Elly's Everyday Thanks a lot! Waiting for it!
I love the different angle!!
Thanks Danielle!
Hi Elly! I've just used my Castile soap(your recipe) to lift chocolate stains out of my sofa. It worked like a charm.
Fantastic! It's pretty marvellous stuff :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking isn't it just 👍. My test group - now about 40 people - are abandoning their commercial stuff in favour of good old fashioned soap!
Superb! I'm slowly teaching all my friends to make their own, so I don't have to always make it for them! :)
Thank you for the video Elly!
This soap on my to do list for a while now)
You're welcome Regina, that's great! It's been a really popular one :)
Hello EllyI am very fond of you I like you very much and you are the real teacher best of luck
Oh, thank you so much Dua! You're very kind :)
Great video and amazing lather! I used your recipe for pure olive oil soap at the end of last year and it has been stored away until now. But I should really go ahead and test it :)
Yes, you should! :)
I loved the review with the go pro 👍🏻 Thank you!
Thanks!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you Elly so much for your help. I will check out the chart & see if it helps. Thanks again.
Good job Elly, plz is there any change in orange soap features after time? especially rancidity or oxydation of zest ? any chage of zest color ? i read that it may take black color after time! plz clarify this point for me! thank u in advance
Hi Nina, no, as you can see this soap is still a good nice golden colour after more than one year!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking yeah Elly i'm seeing the review's video! u've done great job .
Thanks Nina :)
Yaaay! To more soap videos!
Yay! :)
Thank you so much! Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, I will try making this soap. Do you mean I have to store the soap for 15 months before using?
No, just 4-6 weeks is enough for curing the soap. I just showed this as an example of how a well made soap can keep if made and stored correctly.
Do you also wash the dishes in the sink with this soap or do you have another kind that's better?
Yes, you can use any soap to wash dishes :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thank you for the info :)
good idea the go pro on your head seeing the way you look i.o camera on the side
That was sooo satisfying❤️👏🏻
Thanks! That's good to hear :)
We could hear you over water running..... Great camera and works great!!
Thanks Kristie - yes I was pleased with how well it worked! I have a particularly noisy drain in my kitchen sink :)
Amazing!
Love love love!
Thanks Maria!
I tried it, and it really does a good job.
Glad to hear Christine :)
I really want to try making this soap, but can castor oil be switched with palm oil?
You would have to recalculate the recipe to do that :) ruclips.net/video/AqKxin0q1bM/видео.html
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking I see.... Thank you for your reply!!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thank you! Looking forward to more of your lovely soaps!
I really love your soap making. I still have to make this zest soap. I made the shampoo soap with the teatree and rosemary....it smells delicious. My hair is happy. I only wonder how to make a natural conditioner? Love the video ....thankyou Elly💜💜
Thank you Yamina, that's wonderful! I'm happy for you! I've never made conditioner, but I'd like to try that too someday :)
Hi Elly, can I ask a question?
Why u use 42%lye con.?
That just refers to the amount of water in the soap recipe. I prefer low water soaps. This video explains ruclips.net/video/wd7_uZfbPn4/видео.html
Nice video. Will hardness of water we use have any effect on behaviour of soap? Quality of underground water differs based on location.
May sound silly, but it came to my mind after looking at this video.
Yes, you are correct. Very hard water can reduce the lather of handmade soap.
Love the go pro video! So cool
Thanks Lily!
Hello Elly I want to ask why my soap is too sticky when I use it is sticky bar what is my mistake I am a biginner and from Pakistan Karachi
It depends on your climate, and the type of soap you have made. Many handmade soaps get a bit soft and sticky, particularly in hot and humid climates. Do you think that could be it given you are in Pakistan? I'm not sure what your weather would be like there now...
I have a question, when making most types of soap, how long should you let it cure before using it?
4-6 weeks minimum is ideal. Some soaps even longer!
Thank you Elly!
You're welcome Emily, thank you!
Beautiful!
Thanks Elly for your response 😉
Thank u luv your videos and help
i added fresh orange jest instead of dried i’m a little nervous because i didn’t add dried do you think it will no spoil because of the fresh zest i added about 5 tablespoons thanks 🙏
Beautiful really so so nice
Nice where did you get the scrubber from?
Daiso Japan :)
Brilliant video as always. I love using soap to clean pots (and walls) but my kitchen sink leaves much to be desired since plastic foam scourers have been banished. Your scourer looks a really good alternative. Is it a recycled product, or made by your good self perhaps?
Thanks Clery, oh I wish I could say I made this, but no, it's from Daiso. I do make some of my wash cloths and scourers though. Have you tried luffa?
Elly's Everyday Thank you Elly for your reply.. Lovely idea about using luffas
I've just found your channel - oh my goodness graciousness where have you been all my soaping life - a fantastic Australian soaper, you are wonderful at explaining- thank you for sharing
Elly can you please show how you use a bar soap to wash pots and pans, and do you have a particular recipe for this?
Thanks again Jules! I'm loving your kind words this morning :)
That's a great video idea - thank you!
Love your videos! The camera is great! I'm going to try this orange zest soap now.☺️ Iris
Yay! Thanks Iris!
Do you have any soap recipes using sunflower oil? Love your channel!
Thank you, no, not yet, but I would like to do more research on that subject. It's not commonly used by soap makers because it make quite a soft soap that can spoil easily, but for many people it's an affordable option.
Love your videos Elly ❤️
Thank you :)
Can I use this recipe ... using lemon?
Yes, definitely
Hi elly,
I hv been watching ur soap recipes and observed that u mostly do it with a larger portiin of olive oil.
Olive oil is an expensive oil in india and not that readily available.
So Could u please suggest another oil with same properties as olive oil.
There aren't really any oils with the same properties as olive, but this soap making oils chart might be helpful for you :) www.lovinsoap.com/oils-chart/

Hi Elly! Love your videos ! Just wondering what the PH level is for this soap?
Thank you!
Thank you Yvonne! All handmade soaps are around 8 pH :)
Hi Elly! Can I use Lemon zest instead instead of orange? Thank you always for your videos. ❤️👍🏼❤️
Yes, any zest could be used :)
Love your videos. So informative. I have formulated my own base soap recipe using soapcalc that I think is great. Could I keep using this recipe for different variations or does a recipe need to change according to additives?
Hi Jessica, yes you can absolutely keep using your favourite recipe with different colourants, scents and other additives :)
Hi Elly. This was a very sweet video. Thank you.
Just wondering what properties a mere 5% castor oil imparts to the soap. I’ve noticed you add 5% castor to many of your soaps. Why do you like to add it? Thanks again. 💞
Thanks Bonnie, yes I love to add castor oil to my soaps, it gives olive oil soap a nice, creamy lather boost and is gentle on the skin as well :)
Hi!! I really, just the other day, was just thinking why their wasn't more grow pro soap making users? Like the orang zest. Is ginger to harsh to put in soap
Ha that's funny! Ginger would be nice in soap, but maybe a bit chunky. Maybe ginger powder?
Yes yes yes I am thinking powder lol
Thanks for that Debbie, that's exactly how I would do it too :)
Great ,,,, thank you
thanks for this video, but why it you let it set for 15 months? i thought that you said in your other soap making video that soap cure ofter 4weeks.
You can use them after four weeks, I just had this one bar left in my cupboard :)
What does adding clay do?
Hi Elly, love your videos. I made so much soap this year I've started my own business in Florida USA. It's splash coast soap. Dot com I'd be curious of what you think of my soaps. You taught me alot. Blessings for down under.

Love this video Elly. Got a little 'woozy' from the camera action lol but watched it to the end. I always reach for my (your) Olive oil soap when I'm feeling a bit dry myself. Can I buy your soap bars? I’m from California USA
Thank you for your enquiry, but no I don't sell any soap to the public anymore :)
Elly's Everyday I understand. I’m fear of lye to make. I will order goat milk soap base so I can just melted it then added essential oil which is easier for me.

What s curing Please
It's a period of time where you let the soap dry out and become mild.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thank you!
Then guess what today this sourdough recipe came up on my Google page
anitalianinmykitchen.com/lievito-madre-recipe/
It looks wonderful and it’s made with honey!
Why 15 months curing
It only needs 4-6 weeks, this is just a bar I had leftover that cured a lot longer!
Wow that's a long cure. How you stop yourself from using it. LOL
Haha, this was the very last bar I forgot that I had! Most of it was used up in the first 3-6 months :)
