    Cool thing about tippet "x" and diameter...they add up to 11. So if you want to know the diameter of 4x just subtract it from 11 in your head and then add some zeroes at the front and you get .007. (Your table at 3:08 of this video is proof.) Math is fun!

      Yes, after much "scientific" experimentation (aka losing and/or scaring fish) I have found that 3X is fine for most situations, for trout, especially in lakes in a float tube when fish are a bit bigger than on a stream. Sometimes go down to 4x if the water is quite clear (No! I'm not going to say, "gin clear"; that is just lame, even though Ben sometimes says it)!! ;D LOL

    Hi Ben, I have been following your channel for a while now and i am very curious about your opinion on backing in freshwater (carp aside).
    I am actually referring to your statement for Trout, Pike and Bass use a "cheap reel" which i totally agree with. Never had one of those hitting the brake nor ever seen the backing.
    Besides that fact that it enlarges the Arbor and reduces coiling.
    What are your thoughts about it?

    I’ll probably get some heat for this comment, but I like to use fluorocarbon with dry flys on heavily fished areas, I seem to have better success in that situation. For example I was pulling trout under a busy downtown bridge in front of a bunch of other fisherman. It’s a total pain because the line tends to sink. When I hike or go on backpacking trips I’ll use mono every time. Cheers!

    • @OwenWilliamsPhD

      Here's a thought: It could be that you are pulling 5X or 6X through the eye of your hook under tension and curling it that way. trim and try again, keeping the tippet looser around the eye of the hook

  • @bhart42
    @bhart42 2 года назад

    A big reason I switched to nylon is specifically because it breaks down when fluoro does not. If you suck at fly fishing like me and break off a lot of fish, if you have fluoro tippet/leader, you’re leaving behind something that will take literally millions of years to break down. Sure it’s a small and pretty insignificant amount, but you could just use nylon and the amount would be zero.

  • @glennsands9127
    @glennsands9127 2 года назад

    My experience is that flouro gives a more predictable landing of a dry fly and drift. Saltwater flouro is awesome for streamers as it’s increased stiffness helps turn big bugs over. Stop being a poser and learn to tie your own leadersL. It is super easy and cheap. If you are using a 5 or 6 wt rod, use the simple formula of 2” of 20lb ( all of it flouro), 2’ 15lb, 2’ of 12lb, 2ft of 10lb (stop there for streamers) 2’ of 8lb and 2’ of 6lb for dries/nymphs. Blood, uni, surgeons - you pick the knot you like to join the sections.
