I love my Army Painter gear. Highest quality without the killer price tag. I stack their paints against Citadel any day of the week. And much lower cost, at least in the States.

I recently bought the big set of Army Painter paints after liking the basing set. I am a fan of the Army Painter. I find their paints are not as thin as airbrush (like Vallejo's Model Air or Game Air) but they aren't overly thick either. So, not to thick not to thin. They are kinda creamy. The paints do take considerable shaking though...

  • @MaZEEZaM
    @MaZEEZaM 4 года назад +3

One of the Army Painter guys has previously mentioned they add the extra medium so it effectively seals the air out and stabalises the paint much better while its in storage before it gets to you and recommends squirting out that top medium before shaking them to use. It is a bit of a pain though to have to do that with every bottle before using them.

You can use a nailpolish shaker to really shake the paint. I use one and it is great... especially if you also put a glass ball in them. Then you will really see the quality of the army painters paint.

I have three sets of paints mainly because they all do different things I use Vallejo, Army painter and Reaper ( I particularly like their Desert Sand and Dragon red) and that's it really.
Each paint set varies slightly in colour and pigment and I often discover something that the other doesn't do. I don't use Citadel/GW paints for three reasons . The first is obviously the price they are expensive. the second the pots they are designed in such a fashion that they dry out because the lids don't close properly. And those lids!? Well, they tend to stick up way too far from the pot and they can catch on your arm or clothing and topple over spilling their expensive paint everywhere. I have recently become interested in the Scale 75 metallics as I here they are very good. I've yet to try those

As far as the scene stuff, I really like the quality tubs they come in, not just bags of which require you to transfer it to something else for storage and who knows was that 2mm random A brand or was it 3mm Random B brand...cant remember. Whereas having the Army painter materials in the small tubs with branding and stickers on the packaging you always know what you have been using and potentially want to replace. The tubs are also good for collecting your own local materials, I just don't really like the look of kitchen cliplock storage type containers lol

I tried the Army Painter Quick Shade. After trying a couple of dips, I too switched to painting it on. The result was almost a semi-gloss. (Before anyone asks, yes, I stirred the bejebbers out of it." I need to go back and repaint 60+ figures. Never again.

Some GW Primers have an equivalent color and sometimes not. For example the black primer (Chaos Black) is of a different shade than the black base color (Abbadon Black). Some might think that's not much of an issue but you can see the difference. You have to prime your spay primed black minis again with a brush if you intend to use black paint.

Use stainless steel nuts as agitators/mixing "balls", they don´t interact with the paint at all and have sufficient mass to make them move/mix the colour when shaking the bottle. Bearing balls tend to block the tip of those "drop bottles" (Vallejo/Army Painter style bottles).

I couldn't agree with you more Mel! I'm an old-school figure painter, and have always struggled to get large numbers of minis painted in a reasonable amount of time. The AP method is fantastic, if used properly. Like you said, brushing on is much better than actually dipping. Great review!

I'm still useing my warpaints back from the 2010 mega paint set! I just pull the dropper heads off and place those in warm water to clean and clear the dropper holes. Then taken a skinny metal rod, bent a small hook near the bottom. Stick it in the paint bottle and eaither spin it with your fingers or a small drill will work too. I gotta give it to the army painter, the medium/binder in those older orignal warpaints held up now over 13 years and still going!! Now that being shared, I may end up needing to add a drop or two of army painter warpaint medium but I haven't needed to as of yet but that is a possibility later down the road. Iv seen other brands citadel and even testors acrylic mediums and binders evap over just a few years...

  • @ChrisHolden

I've had the Army Painter Mega Set for a few years and love it. The quickshade is awesome; I use strong tone for red, green, brown (warm) colours and dark tone for blues and greys (strong tone on blue looks horrible, dark tone on red looks muddy).
Like you, I prefer brushing on rather than dipping - apply liberally then take off the excess where it pools after a couple of minutes.
I found their anti-shine spray to be really disappointing - it frosts up the models really easily; a quick coat of Testors Dullcote brushed over Quickshade works really well, but also "de-saturates" the colours a bit (repainting the original colour over the dullcote brings some vibrancy back into the colours, but defeats the point of having a super-tough varnish on your miniatures).
Spray primer, add details, quickshade, edge highlight (fine details if you really must) and you've got a half-decent looking army fairly quickly.
I love the colour-primers and the matched-colours for the paints; makes painting multiple models at a time really quick. Maybe it's changed since I got mine, but the strong tone dip (solvent-based varnish) and the strong tone ink are nothing like each other and give very different effects when painted over plain white (strong tone ink over white creates a really nice "industrial" look for things like robots and sci-fi scenery).
I've heard people say that Army Painter are as good as Vallejo. I've only used Citadel and Army Painter - A/P dropper bottles are great for mixing your own colours, one drop at a time, and the paint has really good, strong coverage.

I've heard similiar about Vallejo but I've never tried them mate, so couldn't say. I've never had frosting issues but I bath my models in warm air when I spray varnish them bud

We had a couple of boxes kindly sent from the Army Painter guys, we used them quite a lot. We found that the metallics are quite good, and spray primers are superb. That said, not great fans of the brushes nor the quickshades, as you we prefer to apply them by brush... and when it comes to acrylics we're just huge Vallejo fanboys, both the brush and airbrush ranges. We do use the occasional scenic products, but as you have said... we make our own in bulge (mostly you're fault... you taught us how to!! ;P)
    Great vid Mel!

I have been watching Luke's App which has a review of Army Painter.
He does say that the feed back from his viewers were not GOOD for Army Painter pigments.
Luke's App said to add a metal ball bearing (7-8mm) into the bottle,
He also said it would be cost effective to buy a NAIL VARNISH SHAKER to help with the mixing
AND it DOES work, Good TIP

Drives me up a wall that you did not pull the dropper top out of the bottle and use a brush to put the binder and pigment from the styrene board back in the bottle. Then go get yourself some 8mm ball-bearings and you can put one in and you are good with a lot less waste.

Mel, I know its more of a model manic rather than a terrain manic question but... I have always used stained polyurethane as an all in one tone and varnish step. But its absolute hell on the brushes. Is the Quick Shade easy to clean? Or is it a craft-store brush affair where its trashed at the end?

As a side note, the new GW primers seem to be color matched as well, at least if you go by their tutorial vids they've been putting up for a while...

When it comes to painting AFV & aircraft models I still prefer Ammo by Mig as their colour selection are easy to match to real-world colours, but are horrible for painting figures as the paint is so thin.

Army Painter Quickshades, from everything I've seen, are indistinguishable from Minwax Polyshades. Well, except for the price; they're about four times as expensive per volume.
Oh, and Minwax makes a clear polyurethane as well.
If you can't get Minwax, then you go with what you can get, of course.
