I came across your video a few months ago and have used your process to make all my hats! They have turned out awesome and everyone loves them. Your process is so easy and it works! I recommend your video and process to everyone who asks how I get my patches to look so good. Thank you for sharing your process and breaking it down step by step!
Thank You! Looking to work with leather on my laser cutter for the first time and this was SO useful to me. I hadn't considered making the hat patches - have been looking more in the knit/crochet notions space, but now I want to at least make hats for family and friends. I'm particularly grateful for the sourcing, lightburn cut settings, and finishing info.
I've tried HydBond and always had troubles with the corners. I'm using a Hotronix 360IQ as well. I also spoke to PG Hat Co and (although I'm not sure of which bonding agent they use..guess it's a secret..he did say they don't heat press..they use a bonding agent) and they've done tens of thousands of hats.
I have a Hotronix 360IQ and use LoneStar but I still have issues with corners/edges lifting from time to time. I just ordered a Jack S5 Post bed sewing machine which will be delivered within the next two weeks. I see a lot of hat makers out there using Barge Cement to adhere patches without having to use a hat press.
I am waiting to recieve my xtool 20w d1 pro for something to start out with and ran across this video, you are great at explaining how to do this and want to say thank you for sharing it! Some people dont like to give out their go to info and items but you did! I liked the video and subscribed! Cant wait to try this and see much more!
Thank you so much for sharing. I have a Xtool D1 pro 20W laser and want to make some patches. I will be using the Weaver Supply Red Rock Waxy Pull up leather you are using as well. Do you have a recommendation on Laser engrave and cut settings for this? This is my first project with the laser :) Thanks so much!
This is Nick, A professional hat manufacture vendor from China. I will be happy to give you a quotation upon receipt of your detailed requirements. Thank you~
Love your transparency training, but cannot believe you haven't got a glue press rig for the hats patches. MADE OUT of WIG FOAM HEADS at least. Having to paint on glue, position and hold everyone for 30+ seconds. Patience of Jobe. for many things I made a 3/4" melamine VAC Box w micro hole all over top. The platform holds down EVERYTHING fro gluing or spraying and will suck right thru paper towel sheets, so you can keep the vac box top clean. You can suck patches to hats if you block it right. Al least a press jig.
This a great in-depth video.I am a newbie with it comes to make leather patches for my hats. This video has been my constant resource for helping me to learn the process. I haven’t been able to find any other videos comparable to this one, so thank you so much for creating this. I had to subscriber of course!
Great video! Very inclusive. Love it. My wife stumbled upon your RUclips. We’re presently in the market for a CO2 laser machine. Since we’re already producing and selling T-shirts, owning an engraving marking will add to our business. We were looking for a more inclusive video on how to crate leather patches from start to finish and make it a huge part of our business. That’s how we stumbled upon this video. We’ll continue to review more of your videos for more information. Thank you 🙏🏾. I find it interesting that you don’t heat press your hats. I thought that was the only means to apply patches to hats, regardless of the type of glue you’re using. Very interesting.
Great Video and very helpful. I was hoping to find out about the Resolene with the Airbrush you have from Amazon. Do you need to mix the Resolene with anything when you put it in the airbrush bottle? Thanks so much!
Have you ever considered trying to make wood patch hats that are becoming pretty popular right now? I’ve been wondering what wood and where they are getting it to try it.
Great video, I bought the leather you referred to and use in the video. I am having problems with lots of soot on the leather after cutting.. When I clean it the soot makes a mess and I have soot soaked into the leather. Any ideas on how to solve that issue? Or the best way to clean the soot off. Thank you.
I've been thinking about getting into the Hat game. So, it would appear that I don't absolutely have to have a hat press? How do your patches hold up w/out the press? Thanks for the video.
when you airbrush the resolene, ho much are you diluting it? and do you find it gunks up the airbrush afterwards? What is your cleaning process for the airbrush gun? I've only done resolene with foam brushes so far. Thanks!
Great video, thanks so much for sharing your experience. PS that cement would be great decanted into an old (clean) ketchup bottle to make easier pouring 😉
Hi, thanks for all the great tips. I am having a difficult time finding the correct settings on my Glowforge Pro to cut the Weaver Waxy pull up. Do you have settings for me that wont scorch or char the leather? TIA!
Great, helpful video, have not purchased the air brush set up yet. My question is, when you put the resolene in the sprayer, is it full strength or is it mixed with anything else like water? Thanks so much!
this was a great question I am surprised he did not answer you, I see this question asked alot in other videos, you typically will not need to dilute it, especially if you are using a standard harbor freight airbrush, but make sure you do clean it right away as Resolene can get sticky real quick when your done. also do a back fill "clean" on your airbrush with 70% alcohol or acetone cleaner, as well the needle.....I also usually use a metal polish for my needle to make sure its smooth and clean, same will apply to pro dye as well
That would work, this is a great tutorial but the whole Illustator part can be skipped and done only in Lightburn, especially when its supposed to be easy and cheap.
You said something about glowforge servers. Does that mean that the glowforge HAS to be connected to THEIR servers to work!? Yeah. I stay away from ANYTHING that requires MY designs be fed through their servers for me to use hardware that I purchased!
That a great idea with the tape! My glowforge honeycomb bed is steel so I use bar magnets to hold my leather down. The Gweike Cloud Pro uses some type of non-magnetic bed most likely aluminum therefore magnet won’t work. I like the tape idea😀!
@@3DPrintFarm I just bought Gweike Cloud Pro using your code, but I can’t find the tie downs anywhere for it !!! Pleaseee let me know where to get them
Great video, Garrett! Absolutely love the airbrush for resolene! I’ve been using an old spray bottle and brushing it on, but think it’s time to upgrade.
Did you have better luck with spraying them on. It seems I almost completely saturate the patches when I spray resolene but the bigger char areas still rub off

We bought the Gweike Pro Seriously need help on settings either in Lightburn or the cloud settings to cut and engrave patches. Have customers waiting and cant get good patches to engrave and cut. Please help . Anyone ?
Yeah...I get it. Glowforge is cool - but if you have an OUNCE of patience, and are willing to learn how these machines work - you can buy 2 or 3 OMTechs for the price of a Glowforge, and not rely on their cloud system...and run circles around the them.
I own the Gweike Pro myself. The information in Lightrom when cutting leather can never be correct. Please show me how to cut 1.5mm thick leather at a speed of 30mm/sec and 90% power with a 50 watt laser. The values for the laser engraving are also not correct. Typically, the Gweike Pro engraves leather at 350mm/sec and a power of 50%-55%.
Both hats are similar because they are made in the same factory. One or the other has given instruction on how the hat is too be constructed. To be honest the yupoong in my opinion is a far better hat. However the customer wants what the cust wants.
Congrats. You grew up to the big dogs. I have run lasers for about 25 years. Right now have 3 co2 Chinese made lasers. Each one cheaper then the glow forge. I hate hearing the words glow forge, as in my opinion you spend too much for what you get. I also don't like diode laser due to safety concerns. But I understand why people do buy those, you just need to be careful. Even the $2k-$3k co2 lasers in the past 10 years from china are really good. I have owned the $40,000 lasers. I won't do that again. Have fun, and congrats.
Your video is good, but that's NOT how you do it. It kind of works, but the patch will come off in time. I 've been making leather hat patches for 30 years plus. The method you use is ok for a novice but not ok for professional. I wouldn't be selling these to any body. Sorry
So Dennis how bout instead of tearing people down, you make a video yourself, and post the link here, I would love to see how legit you are, and the professional way to do it from your perspective...education is key. If he is doing it wrong then show the world how to do it right.

I think I've learned something every 3-4 minutes watching this video. Thanks again for putting it together.
If you want to save time and have a hat press use Hydbond adhesive to adhere your patch for a permanent bond.
I've tried HydBond and always had troubles with the corners. I'm using a Hotronix 360IQ as well. Is dura-bull similar to hydbond

Ditch the leather cement and get heat activated glue. Use a hat press. You will get much more uniform adhesion.
How does the cement hold up over time? I know that stitching the patches on is a tremendous extra step.
Woodcraft sells veneers that you can heat press on

brother you've got to get out of cloud-based lasers wow!
Can the cork be soaked? 🤣
Really good video, thanks for sharing.
you could have designed it in Lightburn. Then make your circle a cut and the text a fill. So much easier than going back and forth to illustrator.
Do you still recommend the Gweiki? Are you happy with it?

I see from your Etsy that you’re in Arkansas. I’m out in Little Rock and do Etsy full time! 😃
Can you use a hat press on leather patches?

For this siphon airbrush, it’s undiluted. I have used my dual action airbrush but I have to dilute 50/50 Resolene with water.
What are you charging for wholesale on the completed hat?
Great video, thanks so much for sharing your experience. PS that cement would be great decanted into an old (clean) ketchup bottle to make easier pouring 😉
I like that all the info from start to finish in one video. I strongly dislike search around for the "next" video.

Could you let us know how to clean the patch's smoke marks? I am having a hard time getting them clean. Any product you use ?
Wet the leather before burning and then wash with dawn liquid after.
Thank you for the recommendations

Hi, mind me asking where you got the hold downs for the honeycomb bed?
wouldnt it work just if you ungrouped the line from the text and change it to different color and change to fill?
or am i missing smth?
That would work, this is a great tutorial but the whole Illustator part can be skipped and done only in Lightburn, especially when its supposed to be easy and cheap.

How do you get the patches evenly coated? Do you have the air brush all the way open?
Do you dilute the resolene before spraying?

Can fiber engrave cork?
I would love to do these caps. How do you know if the material is laser safe?
It has to be veg tanned. Chrome tan is toxic
