Thanks Matt. We are tucked away in the panhandle so clear from Hurricane Milton. Absolutely devastating what is about to take place on the gulf coast this week.
Glad to hear that Thunder's working out good. Great video dude - I learned a lot! If you ever need a hand with the LightBurn side of things, let me know. Might be able to give you a pointer or two. Thanks for making this video.
Great video. So how soon is that video about the ability to use chrome tanned leather coming out. I use weaver but have always been getting the veg tanned but don't love the dying process.
Googling it suggests it could be because of Trivalent Chromium now being used instead of Hexavalent Chromium? Hadn't heard of those terms before but just read about it.
There are different types of chromium. I read all sorts of data sheets about it. The dangerous chromium for tanning has not been used since the 50's or something like that. I believe the US and Mexico (where a lot of tanneries are) have not used it in quite some time. A lot of fear mongering with some of the stuff you read online from people that don't educate themselves on the deep dive of the differences.
Thank you for that video. That is exactly what I thought when I see all the videos with the heatpress. How long does it last before it falls off. I would rather spend a bit more money but can be sure that the patch will last. Would it be possible to see in one video how you create your designs for your patches? Greetings from Switzerland.
100% agree. You can get a legit sewing setup for the same cost as most of these people are spending on heat press setups and you know without a doubt it will never fail. I can do a design video.
Thanks for the tutorial Donny. Is your secret sauce a resolene based solution? How long are you waiting for the leather cement to dry before stitching? I've seen a bunch of hats and your quality outshines every one of them. Also what phone? Dang your close-ups are clean. Been talking with Robin up at Collier and about ready to pull the trigger on a S5 (you need to hit him up for a referral...lol). Much appreciated man.
Thanks for the compliment! It is resolene. I can stitch right away after cement but usually they will sit over at the machine for an hour or so before I get around to sewing them. Using my Pixel 8 pro for photos and videos. Good luck with the S5! I love it.
Our GF is collecting dust in the back. We keep it hanging around for an emergency situation if the big laser goes down...we are not down. I may bring it back home and set up in the garage when the weather cools off to run some work at home and weekends when we are not in the store.
I don't seal veg natural leather. It will discolor the patch. I run at such a low power on those that it doesn't create any char. A tip...run over the natural veg leather patch with a lint roller to pick up any excess.
Glue it then stitch it ? Seems the glue is an extra un-needed step. A quick temporary adhesive spray on the back of the patch will hold it in place for stitching.....Also I think your patch should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch lower......But like you said- 'To each his own.' Thanks for the Video. Nice job.
We have tried to be consistent with our patch placement since 2017. Most hats I see, the patches look too low. I see some people that put them right on top of the bottom stitch above the brim and I hate it. Yes it may be extra work doing the glue on the back but in reality, it is faster and less messy than spraying an adhesive. I have done that and what happens is you get the spray on the edges of the patch as well as the back of the patch. So there is a bigger margin of error getting extremely sticky spray adhesive on the fabric of the hat.
Usually I will have a little lighter pressure on it. Pressing on the patch or hitting it with a little heat from the heat gun will generally knock the track mark off.
Great video. I've been using resolene, but it's just too shiny. I need to figure out a way to cut it too end up with your "secret sauce". Any suggestions?
I'll give it a try. You guys are amazingly helpful! We're still really small- a big order is two dozen hats, lol, but we hope to be where you're at someday! Thanks for the help.
Everyone seems to have their own opinions on patch placement. I think most patches I see are too low. But we have been putting them at the same location since 2017 and feel like they are perfect.
I'd never use top grain. That means the top surface has been corrected by sanding of buffing. I'm a traditional leatherworker and you need to know correct precise terms for different leathers.
Awesome video! Just ordered one for our Channel! God bless y'all!
Great video and fun to watch the process!
Thanks for the video. It has saved me a ton of trial and error!
I appreciate your video. That is a very nice product you have. I am just starting out, that's how I found you. Appreciate it the quality you put out.
Thanks Matt for that and the time to check it out.
@@PGHATCO I hope you guys stay safe. Would love to visit you someday.

This channel is going to blow up. Good honest hard work and you’re doing the right way!
Hey I appreciate that Adam! Always try and be honest with our customers and viewers.
Really great video, no secrets held, really appreciate it! Aspiring to do exactly that myself! Thanks for all brotha!
Yessir! Appreciate you.
Thank you for all the information! Great quality products!
Thanks so much!
In the market for a Thunder for different projects. Did you go with the 100W or 130W? Great video too!
Nice finished product!
Thanks Jeremy!
Where do you get your bulk hats from? Amazing Quality 👏👏👏👏
Hello, new to your channel. You're doing amazing work.🎉🎉🎉
Thanks so much. Appreciate you!
Exelent info
Thank you
Hi, great video and very helpful. Do you use air assist when engraving your leather patches? Thanks!
Glad to hear that Thunder's working out good. Great video dude - I learned a lot! If you ever need a hand with the LightBurn side of things, let me know. Might be able to give you a pointer or two.
Thanks for making this video.
Thanks Mike. For sure a lot inside LightBurn I haven't touched yet but I will definitely let you know.
Love your jack machine, what size of thread are you using? Great video
Thanks Mike. We are using size 138
I noticed you used Weaver sealer to clean it then “secret sauce” resolene to seal it. Aren’t they the same? Great looking product btw 👍
Thanks. They are 2 different products.

Great video, have you tried lonestar or Hydbond leatherette and adhesives?
I have not.

Are you doing any backtacking of your stitches?
Our machine doesn't require that. We just do a few over stitches and we are good to go.
do you still use the Glowforge Pro to make some patches for the hats
Our GF is collecting dust in the back. We keep it hanging around for an emergency situation if the big laser goes down...we are not down. I may bring it back home and set up in the garage when the weather cools off to run some work at home and weekends when we are not in the store.
Just learning. Do you use any kind of conditioner, crean, soap, polish etc before you use the sealer?
I don't do anything before sealer
Do you seal the veg natural tan leather the same way?
I don't seal veg natural leather. It will discolor the patch. I run at such a low power on those that it doesn't create any char. A tip...run over the natural veg leather patch with a lint roller to pick up any excess.

What size thread do you use with your Jack S5 ?
138
What hat(s) do you recommend for golf/performance with adjustable velcro strap?
Richardson has several new golf inspired performance hats. I am not sure if they have velcro or not aside from their performance visors.
30:20 is there anything to do about the wheel track that is visible?
Usually I will have a little lighter pressure on it. Pressing on the patch or hitting it with a little heat from the heat gun will generally knock the track mark off.
Great video. I've been using resolene, but it's just too shiny. I need to figure out a way to cut it too end up with your "secret sauce". Any suggestions?
Resolene is our secrete sauce. You probably could add some water to cut it some but maybe do a test in a small bottle first.
I'll give it a try. You guys are amazingly helpful! We're still really small- a big order is two dozen hats, lol, but we hope to be where you're at someday! Thanks for the help.
I would like to know where do you order your caps from? I am planning to start my own business here in India.Pls help
We are a direct Richardson dealer so we order straight through them. Our custom hats we have made for us. The rest we use SS Activewear.
Donny, great video. Is your secret sauce a secret, or just you having fun.😊 Would you be willing to share?
in an earlier comment he replies that it is resolean
It is resolene
what oz leather do you prefer to use?
I mentioned it in the video at the end. 3-4oz
@@PGHATCO Thank you! Sure enough a little after i commented, i heard you say that.
What are the measurements for the patches?
My customers look at those $35 hats compared to $12 - 15 and select the lower cost versions. Fortunately we can offer both.
This machine doesn't require it. I just do a few over stitches
The patch looks too high
Everyone seems to have their own opinions on patch placement. I think most patches I see are too low. But we have been putting them at the same location since 2017 and feel like they are perfect.
whats the secret sauce????
Probably Resolene
It is a resolene.

Ok. Just stating the way the product is listed through our supplier.
Top grain is the highest quality leather and means that the top surface has not been modified!
camera motion sickness!
You can come hold the camera for me next time.
