This is essentially a series of video diaries showing the development of my allotment plot.
The plot size is 16.1metres long and 12.1 metres wide. I took the decision, based upon my previous allotment experience, to create raised beds throughout the whole site. The larger beds are 6 metres in length with the smaller beds being 3.6 metres in length. All beds being 1.2 metres wide.
The allotment has been created on old grazing land where the soil is mainly clay, so doesn't drain well in winter and then shrinks and cracks in summer. Clay does retain nutrients well so with some work it can become great.
I take an honest and pragmatic view on the successes and failures of the crop that I am trying to grow.

The beds are looking good Ian despite the mud, looking forward to seeing them all done, happy gardening. Sam

Thanks Sam.
I’m having a couple of weeks break as my back has been playing up but come January I’m hoping to get back on track.
Need to be ready for the first plantings in March.
Hope you have a great Christmas 🎄🌼🧅
Great video, try the gardenline markers. They work great for me and come off with nail varnish remover

Hi and thanks for the continued support.
Thanks for the suggestion on change of marker pen.
Talking to a colleague, who has also had issues with ink staying on the labels, and we wondered if it was actually an issue with the labels. Now they are made of recycled plastic the label finish is different so perhaps it doesn’t allow the ink to stay as it used to. Just a thought.
Hope you have a good Christmas and have plenty of gardening plans for next year. 🪴🌼🧅
@diyhomeandgardening that's a very good point. We need someone to do a test.
are you using hay or straw to mulch? plot looks nice
Hi Stella. Sorry for the delayed reply but your message had been held under review. It happens so nothing to worry about.
Many thanks for watching and your message.
When it’s available I use manure to improve the beds and also as a mulch.
I got given 3 bales of hay, as it was damp, which couldn’t be used for the animals at the farm so I have used that as a winter mulch. Straw and hay both work really well to help insulate the plants in the soil. As it breaks down in spring it will then add extra carbon and nutrients to the soil.
Hope this helps you. All the best 🪴🌼🧅
@ fantastic thank you 🙏🏾
@@StellasVegetablegardens and thanks for the kind comment on my allotment.
